Knock-out Roses, Just in Time for Mother’s Day

I’ve planted pink Knock-out Roses in tall urns on my deck. I’ve been using hibiscus here for the past two summers, but the squirrels tip-toe onto the deck…yes, they tip-toe, they know they are doing a bad thing…and they completely strip off all the leaves on my hibiscus. After two summers in a row of that nonsense, it was time to try something new.

Knock out Rose Topiaries for the Deck

So, this year, it’s Knock-out Roses…and these babies have thorns! Haven’t seen any squirrels!  For BNOTP Facebook fans…yep, I had Mandevilla here a week or so ago, but I was missing the topiary/tree shape. So I transplanted the Mandevilla to a different location. You’ll be seeing those later in a future tablescape.

Oh, I should have put the cushions in the chairs before I took this pic. Imagine pretty, dark green cushions with little stripes in the chairs.

Knock out Rose Topiaries on Deck

I took “blue hour” pics this evening. This Monday, for Met Monday, I will share my new blue hour pics along with blue hour pics you’ve sent in. You guys have been having fun capturing the Blue Hour! If you aren’t sure what I’m talking about, click HERE to read last week’s MM post.

To see when the “blue hour” arrives in your area of the country/world, click HERE.

If you would like to share your Blue Hour pics with BNOTP visitors/fans, send them to me at, tonight or tomorrow, and I’ll publish them in my Met Monday post, giving you credit, of course. You can even take some tomorrow night and send them tomorrow evening and I’ll include them in the MM post that will go up Sunday evening.

Have a blessed Mother’s Day! See you on Sunday evening for Met Monday!

Hi Susan, I love these rose trees. That bright pink is a favorite of mine when I purchase cut roses. It just works in my house and makes me smile. Thank you again for the sweetest comments on my porch. I had to laugh when I read about Big Lots. I can just see them hiring me to re-design all their furniture. You are a sweet, sweet lady, Hugs Kathysue

  2. I love your roses and I know you are going to enjoy them looking out onto the deck area from your kitchen! Just beautiful!

Pretty pretty roses. I love this picture. Those orney squirrels are smart aren't they! I bet they leave those roses alone! Happy Mother's Day to you! Anne

  6. don't know a lot about roses…do you purchase the knock-out rose in a tree form, or do you prune the regular knock out rose to the desired shape?

  7. Susan (Between Naps on the Porch) says

    Hi Glenda,
Ummm, well, normally I see Knock-out Roses in bush form. These came from The Home Depot and they came this way. Hopefully, I can sort of keep them in a tree/topiary shape. I hope to even winter them over…be nice if I could use them again next year. Will have to research how exactly to do that.

  8. marty (A Stroll Thru Life) says

Just gorgeous. I love tree roses, in fact I love all roses. These are such a beautiful color. They look fabulous on the deck. Hugs, Marty

  9. I can just see it with the cushions. Nice. I have been explaining the blue hour to my husband. I hope he gets it.

  20. Laura PARING DOWN says

Gorgeous roses. I love knock outs – they'll live through just about anything.

  21. The Quintessential Magpie says

Susan, that looks beautiful! I've enjoyed our knock-out roses, and right now, they are loving something because they are blooming in profusion. I don't spray them (allergic to spray), but they don't seem to mind. What mine did seem to mind (and I had to replace them) was too much rain and hot weather. We have that in abundance. 😉

Sending you big hugs and hoping I might get to meet you at the GA blogger's lunch in June. I got an invitation to join y'all and become an honorary peach (my GA ancestors would be smiling), so I'm hoping it will be possible. I love my Georgia friends!

    Happy PS…

    Sheila 🙂

  22. Susan, you'll love the knockout roses. I've had great luck with them and just added more to our landscape. Love the idea of the knockout as a standard. I've not seen any of those here, but will look for some. I could use some of those on our porch. 🙂

The squirrels totally destroyed our outdoor cushions this winter. They literally dug holes in them. So we are waiting on new cushions to arrive. If they hurry and get them to use it's going to be too hot to use them. LOL

    Enjoy the weekend!

  23. Aprons Gone Wild says

Susan…you are amazing. I learn so much from you! Today's post led me to the 'blue hour' post where I learned something fascinating! I can't wait to try it out tonight. You are so good to share all of your knowledge with us.
    Thank you.

  24. Those rose trees are beautiful! I hope your squirrels aren't climbers. We have squirrels that eat my Joseph's Coat rose that climbs on our fence. Also…..I truly enjoyed the post about the "blue hour"….can't wait to try to see if I can capture that! Toni

  25. Tammy@InStitches says
