Make A Banner For Spring Decorating: A Tutorial

Welcome to the 324th Metamorphosis Monday!

Though Easter is behind us, when Bonnie shared a picture of the wonderful Spring Easter banner she made by hand to transform her fireplace mantel for spring, I knew I had to share it with you! Is this not amazing?!

So many beautiful details!

I absolutely love all the color and pattern! See those cute rosettes along the bottom. This tutorial includes the link to a video showing exactly how to make those, too.

Easter Spring Banner

You could never buy a banner this beautiful in a store, could you? I just love it!

Spring Easter Banner Tutorial

Below is Bonnie’s detailed tutorial for making this spring banner.

To make this banner, you will need the following items:

*8×12″ Chipboard blanks for the individual pennants. (I purchased those at Create for Less and many of the other supplies used in this project are available there, too.)
*Blank Chipboard letters, 3″ (I purchased at Craft Warehouse, also available at most craft stores like Michaels, Joann’s, etc…)
*1 sheet blank chipboard 12×12″
*12×12″ scrapbook paper of your choice. (I purchased six sheets each of three different cardstock weight papers, the green plaid, orange stripe and mini polka dot and had paper left over, but always nice to have extra in case of errors. It’s also available at most craft stores.)
*Ribbon of your choice. I purchased three rolls, 3 yds. each.
*Decorative, flat back buttons. (six large, five small)
*Images of your choice. (I purchased and instantly downloaded the rabbit images from Etsy HERE. You will need a software program to resize and print your images. I use Fotoslate, but there are many newer programs out there.)
*Egg images also purchased on Etsy HERE
*Matte finish photo paper (cardstock weight)
*Hot glue gun
*Craft glue
*Adhesive roller
*Distress Ink, by Tim Holtz in “antique photo”. (optional)

Instructions for making the banner

1. Download, print and cut out the images. I printed on matte finish photo paper purchased at Staples. You could also download the images and have them printed at a copy center. I sized the rabbit images to approximately 5″ x 7″ and the egg images to 3.5″ x 4.5″.
2. Trace the shape of the pennant onto the cardstock. I used two different paper patterns on mine, so I measured the pennant, drew a line about 3/4 of the way down, traced the top half and then the bottom. (overlapping the two by 3/4″) Cut out the traced images.
3. I then punched the bottom paper on the top edge using a Martha Stewart punch because I wanted a decorative edge between the two.
4. Glue the cardstock to the chipboard pennant. (I ran it through my Xyron machine which adds adhesive to the back of paper, but you can also just use craft glue).
5. Cut a strip of paper (white polka dot) about 1/2″ wide by width of pennant and glue across the middle of the bottom strip as shown.
6. Make paper rosette. To make the paper rosettes, I use the Martha Stewart Scoring Board. It’s a great tool to have, you can also make custom sized envelopes and other projects with it. It can be found at Scrapbook dot com for a great price.
7. I followed THIS video to make the rosettes. I used two-inch strips to make them and punched the edges using Martha Stewart Pansy and Lacy scallop punches using the technique shown in the video.
Note: I punched out a 1″ circle and used it to adhere the rosette at the center (on both sides). In the video, she just uses glue.
8. Hot glue a large button to the center of your rosette and hot glue the rosette to the center of the polka dot strip.
9. Using your adhesive roller, glue the rabbit images to the pennants.
10. Tie the individual pennants together using the ribbon. I used 16″ pieces.
11. Using the same technique as on the pennants, trace the letters onto cardstock, cut out and glue to chipboard letters. (I antiqued the edges of the pennants and the letters with Distress Ink by Tim Holtz).
12. To give the eggs more stability, I traced the eggs onto blank chipboard and glued the chipboard to the backside.
13. Glue the letters to the center of the eggs and glue on small button to embellish.
14. Punch a hole in top center of egg. Using a small ribbon, tie on backside of ribbon bows, between pennants.
Done!

A huge thanks to Bonnie for taking time to share all the directions for making this adorable spring banner!
