In The BNOTP Library: Martha’s Entertaining

I almost forgot to share a book from my decor library this evening. Painters are coming tomorrow to get started on pressure washing the house, decks and porch, all in preparation of painting them (the porch and decks) as well as repairing some damage done to the chimney by a mischievous woodpecker. I’ve been outside this evening, removing string lighting and other stuff that will be in the way when work begins. Going to be a crazy day tomorrow!

I’ve been meaning to share this book for a while now. It’s by the Queen of all “Good Things” when it comes to the home. I bet you know who I’m talking about! 🙂

Martha's Entertaining by Martha Stewart

3 Things I Like About This Book:

  •  This book is humongous! It’s 10 inches x 11 1/2 inches and it’s 1-1/2 inches thick! As the title implies, this beautiful tome is all about entertaining with a capital E and it’s packed with gorgeous photos and recipes. It covers 4 years worth of parties Martha has given in her various home(s) and in other locations, too. No one does entertaining like Martha!
  • The book is divided up in the most unusual way. Instead of being done by seasons or holidays or the usual layout, it is divided up into three sections, according to the time of day. So pages 1-69 are all about Morning events or gatherings. Pages 70-195 covers Afternoon events and pages 196-322 are dedicated to Evenings. Under each time of day, there are ideas, recipes and inspiration for all kinds of different types of parties from special holidays and celebrations to one-of-a-kind events. The final 100+ pages are filled with all the to-die-for recipes that correspond to all the gorgeous displays of food seen throughout the book. So much inspiration in one book!
  • It’s by Martha. I’m an unabashed Martha fan. Love her no-nonsense way of explaining how to do things and have always been in awe of how much she knows. She’s like the Einstein of all things Home. Sorry, I have Einstein on the brain right now since I’m currently listening to a book about him on Audible. 🙂

Hi Susan -I love Martha and her beautiful books too. So inspiring. I wish she still had her old show format, before her unfortunate incarceration. Her last show was good but it aired on an obscure station that wasn’t available in Canada. The good old days : )

    • I know, I feel the same way Patty. I’ve been occasionally watching some of her really old shows on You Tube. There’s a guy on there who has recorded tons of her old shows. You can see the video library he’s uploaded to You Tube here: https://www.youtube.com/user/icedtape0/videos He’s apparently a huge Martha fan, too. I never got to watch those older shows since I was working away from home back then, but seeing them now, I wish they were still on.

  2. She definitely is the Queen of entertaining. I watched a movie on her a long time ago and she put in years of hard work from an early age. I used to love her show with her mother, who was a sweetheart and a great cook in her own right. The apple did not fall far from the tree.

  3. Tour decorating/entertaining library is incredible. I should pay more attention to books so I would not have to work so hard to come up with ideas. They are great sources of inspiration.

  4. Thanks for highlighting this book. I’m going to look into it. Thanks, too, for letting us know about those YouTube videos! (Thanks for prompting her, Patty!) I loved those shows and miss them, as well.

  5. Thanks for posting about this book. I’m going to look into it. I’m a big Martha fan, too, and am also glad to hear about those YouTube videos. She has the best ideas!!

Thanks Susan, I’m so glad you love Martha! I do too, always have enjoyed her show, books and everything. I’ll have to look into this book to go along with the others I have.

    Hi Susan,
Thank you for the post on Martha Stewart. I adore Martha! I love all her books but I especially love her classic Entertaining book. Her love of depression glass gave me the collecting bug. I attribute that to her creative use of jadite & other depression glass in tablesettings and in entertaining. BMS (Before Martha Stewart) I was never interested in depression glass until I saw the creative ways she used it in her entertaining. One of her early videocassette tapes shows Martha getting ready for various types of brunches including Thanksgiving. Those are jam packed with pure fabulousness!! Her This Old House book is filled with reno tips. Martha is interested in and knowledgeable about so many things I would have to credit her as being the most influential individual in my life. I am grateful for her talents and willingness to share them with us. I have followed Martha since her first newsletters. No one could take her place. I miss her sweet Mom, Big Martha, too. I liked it when her family was featured in her videos and books. I think she is TRULY one of the most influential people of our time. She is most definately A GOOD THING!! Thank you, Martha!! You are loved and appreciated!

    • I really enjoy her work too, Sarah. I love how she takes care of herself and is staying vibrant even as she gets on up there in years. I hope she is around for many more years! The trait I love most about Martha is her unquenchable thirst for learning and her desire to teach and share everything she learns. She is such an inspiration in so many ways. Definitely well-loved and appreciated! There’s a guy who has tons of her old shows recorded and has been sharing them on YouTube. I love watching them when I have a few minutes. Here’s the link in case you need a Martha fix. 🙂 https://www.youtube.com/user/icedtape0/videos
