Old Bound Newspapers Become End Table

Welcome to the 17th Metamorphosis Monday!

Many, many years ago, The Macon Telegraph and News decided to dispose of all the old copies of their past publications/newspapers. Apparently, news organizations used to keep copies of their old papers by binding them into large “books.” Each bound volume, shown below, had about three months worth of newspapers.

I had six of these large books stored for years under my guest bed…couldn’t quite figure out what I to do with them. They are truly little time capsules…I love pulling them out and reading the days events in 1921, in my old home town of Macon, Georgia.

One day I got an idea…

I needed an end table in my upstairs family room. So I stacked them up…

And had a piece of glass cut a bit bigger than the books themselves.

These facinating time capsules are no longer stored under the bed and I have a unique and functional end table for my upstairs family room.

Check out this past post to see some of the fascinating ads and articles from the 1921 book: A Trip in My Time Machine  It’s amazing how women were just being allowed to vote and weren’t allowed to work in jobs as policewomen.  Also, the price of shoes, suits etc… will have you shaking your head. 🙂

Looking forward to seeing all your Before and Afters for this Met Monday!

  70. Jo - To a Pretty Life says

What a great idea! I love old books…your big old books are great! Especially when they can be useful. It’s kind of like how I use books as pedestals for my little knickknack things, but on a large scale.

  71. I LOVE IT!!! What a great idea. Those books are huge and just perfect for a table.

  72. Wsprsweetly Of Cottages says

Susan…your post took on a special meaning for me. I saw the year 1954 and smiled. That was the year I graduated from high school and married Pat the very next day. June 18, 1954. It is the year my life began.
I had not one single thing I had morphed for Monday. Not a thing. Well..I did but..the problem is..I ALWAYS forget to take “before” pictures. My porch would have been a good one. Taking pictures is a …it’s a way of thinking. It has to become a habit. I simply have not formed that habit completely. I get a sinking feeling when I miss a “before” picture.
Nuff’… 🙂 I’m taking up all your space!
~smiles and love to you, Susan~

  76. Room design studio says

I LOVE THE BOOKS IDEA !!! I cant believe how much i loveeeee this!

  77. This newspaper end table is a treasure to keep and pass down through your family. I love to read old newspapers. 1921 was the year my Dad was born in Bainbridge, GA. It would be so much fun to read the news of the day in 1921 and especially in GA.

  78. I just found one of these for South Carolina’s The State newspaper and wrote a post about it today. One of my readers told me to come over and find this post for more information. I will provide a link back to this post if you do not mind for readers to be on the lookout for these treasures.

  79. I love your endtable! What a clever idea! I do genealogy research. Those books are a geneologists dreams! Imagine the family information contained in them which may not be available any place else!

  80. I would love thos old newspaper books just to READ! Espcially if they are from Macon GA. I just went there doing family history research and I didnt have much time. However did you get them?

    • My sister was working as an accountant for a recycling company and the Macon Telegraph brought them in to recycle them around 20 years. You may want to contact them to see if they have any more that they will be recycling.
