Makeover a Hutch with a Nautical-Beach Theme

Welcome to the 395th Tablescape Thursday!

Recently I de-pollened the porch and gave it a little spring makeover.

I dressed the porch hutch with my fave porch dishes: Tabletops Unlimited, Ma Maison.

Porch Decorated for Summer Entertaining

For this week’s Tablescape Thursday, I decided to give the hutch a little beach makeover using a dishware I purchased back in right after the porch was completed.

Porch Hutch with Beach Makeover

I found this beachy dishware in Kohl’s during the summer of 2008. It’s the “Shoreline Collection” by Home Studio.

The starfish and shell, seeded glassware was part of the collection so I purchased it at the same time. I have 8 of each design but just used 5 for balance in this little makeover.

A Nautical Hutch Makeover

I remember driving to 2-3 different Kohl’s back then to collect all the pieces for a complete set. You do what you have to do when a dish pattern steals your heart! The two fishy pitchers on the top shelf are from Marshalls (I think) a few years back.

You may remember the cute numbered pails from previous table settings. They are filled with a combination of shells collected and purchased shells.

The little pails come in handy for different types of tables. I filled them with eggs for this spring/Easter table setting a few years back. (Tablescape can be viewed here: Easter Tablescape with Bunny Centerpiece

Found this fun oar in Marshalls one year. It looks fun hanging above the hutch or just leaning against the wall.

The porch is ready for some summertime fun. Now we just need sunshine and a bit warmer weather!

Looking forward to all the beautiful table settings for this week’s Tablescape Thursday!

You’ll need to include a link in your post back to the party to link up and participate.

That’s so visitors to your blog will be able to find the party and the other Tablescape Thursday participants. Requiring a link back also prevents businesses and scammers from linking up to sell their products. (Yep, that really happens, unfortunately.)

Please, don’t add your post name/blog name ALL IN CAPS…it tends to create big spaces between the rows of links.

Please do not link up table settings that were just recently shared in the last few weeks for Tablescape Thursday.

  1. Your hutch looks so pretty, Susan. Thank you for hosting.

  2. Love the transformation on the hutch. I was obsessing over seaside and nautical things at T.J. Maxx yesterday slapping my hand and trying not to buy anything! I just put up a display plate in my kitchen with a seashell on it. Wanting to add some blue and remove the Tuscan influence I had. Always something!

  3. Love the Beachy look on the Hutch. I am craving the Beach, time to schedule a weekend get away. I am also starting to obsess over the aqua color, seems it is everywhere now and looks so pretty with yellow.

  4. Your porch is “beachey-keen!!!” franki

  5. Cute makeover, Susan. I really like the glassware that goes with the dishes.

  6. Really love seeing all your “dishy stuff” and the way you pull it all together. So fun! But what I really would love to see is a post on where and how you store away everything. Even better would be a detailed post on where Marie stores all of her assorted things! It would be nice to hear some tips and tricks on making the most of every inch of storage space you have.

I have a ton of “stuff” myself and it’s such a battle. I’ve got it organized okay, but it’s just all so crammed together. It’s gotten to where if I grab one thing, I knock something else off. I live in fear of the breakage. Ha! But seriously, I’ve gotten to where I don’t decorate seasonally as much as I once did because of these issues. Well, that, and I’ve gotten old, too. LOL!

Thank you, Susan. Love your blog!

Hi Susan. Love your porch and dedication to getting all your decorations. I have a question about your hutch. Did you paint it? I was noticing on the close up that the hinges were painted over. I am getting ready to paint my dark pine hutch. It has glass doors and glass shelves and is massive but I am determined. Are there pros and cons re hinges. I think it will be easier if I leave them on because the doors will get a better paint job and there won’t be an issue of doors hanging weird if I mix up the hinges. But, really, which is best? Thank you.

    • Thanks, Kathleen! You can see where I posted about painting the hutch in this old post: https://betweennapsontheporch.net/painting-furniture-a-china-hutch-transformation/
I painted the hutch back in 2008, so it’s been so long now, it’s hard for me to remember. I think I attempted to remove the screws and ran into an issue and decide to just leave the hinges in place. Ideally, if you can remove the hinges, I think it’s looks better to not paint over them, unless of course the hinges look especially bad. The issue with painting over them is eventually some of the paint is probably going to flake off the hinges. So, if you can safely remove the hinges, I would probably do it. If you don’t like how the existing hinges look, you may be able to find replacement hinges the exact same size. That’s what I did with my kitchen cabinets when I had them painted…replaced them with nicer looking hinges.

  8. Ahhh, the thrill of the hunt [for dishware]! Your hutch looks ready for Summer Susan, and will bring a coastal breeze to your door-love the shell filled pails. Thanks for the party!

Looking at your spic ‘n span beautiful porch has me in the mood for shore days–if only the weather would cooperate. A bit chilly this week, but nice and sunny. Love your hutch whereby you can change it up for any season or event. Hugs!

  10. Your beachy dishes are so pretty, I loved them as soon as you got them! Thanks so much for hosting. Please continue TT!!!!!

  11. Thanks so much for the party Susan! Your hutch looks awesome and I love the nautical dishes!

  12. I have got to get busy and do a pretty table
Your seaside dishes are really pretty as all of your dishes are.
And I still want a sun room however spent all my money on traveling last year so no sun porch haha

  13. I always love all your details, Susan, and how many different ways you find to style things! Gorgeous, as usual!

Love it and the glasses are really cool too. We are finally getting some sun and warmer weather this week -yea! Can’t wait for beach weather!

  15. Susan,

Your porch always looks charming and inviting. Regretfully, I do not have a porch like yours.

I digress, but I am anxious to hear about what develops with your DNA search. Please keep us posted. I have some boxes in my parent’s cellar of ancestral research that my aunt did decades ago before the internet. I have thought about doing this myself, for sometime, but as yet, have not. I lost both of my parents within the last four years – my father passed away last November, 2015 – so the void is still very fresh, and I am not yet able to take it on, but I will.

  16. Love your beach theme hutch, Susan. I love beach/coastal style. I can relate on driving to several Kohl’s trying to get all of the pieces for a beach themed comforter that I purchased on clearance. I was lucky to find everything I needed. In fact, about a week later they put the bathroom ceramics, towels and shower curtain on clearance. A girl just gotta do what she’s gotta do, Right!

  17. Love the dishes and am crazy over the lamp!

  18. This is such a cheerful and tranquil spot! I’d love to sit out here and read. Or, if you have internet connection out there, I’d sit for hours and read blogs!

  19. Lovely…..but, do you have somebody that dusts for you? I can barely (OK, never) dust the stuff inside my house…… I’ll just live vicariously through you.

I'd love to hear from you! Please leave a comment!
