Pottery Barn Bedford Office Renovation

Welcome to the 109th Metamorphosis Monday!

How was your weekend? It’s been unbelievably gorgeous weather here in Georgia. I should have been out working in the yard but instead I’ve been inside working on the office.

Office Changes:
There have been a lot changes in the office this week. I’m working on removing the rest of the wallpaper a little at the time. My arms get tired from scraping so I’ve decided to just do a little each day. I think I’ll be done after just another couple of sessions. Yay! Then it will be time to repair the damage done earlier before I found Safe and Simple.

This week, I shopped the house and stole two things from the upstairs family room. One was the sisal rug you can just barely see in the pic below…

And the other was the floor lamp beside the sofa…

I wanted to get a feel for how the office would look with a natural fiber rug. I sort of like this look, so I may just go with a natural fiber rug. I found a velvet cushion cover in a pretty green color for only $4 at the local Ballards Outlet. I bought some foam cushion “stuff” at Hancocks and cut it to fit…but it isn’t firm enough. After shopping both Hancocks and JoAnns and not finding anything firm enough to work as a good cushion, I guess I’ll have to have an upholstery shop cut one for me. I need foam that is really, really dense and won’t squish down. If I eventually put drapes in here, I may have a cushion made at that time, but this one will do for now.

The glass was delivered for the top of the desk and apparently it met with Max’s approval. It looks great…much better than I expected. I wasn’t sure I’d like having glass on top but I really wanted to protect the top from ink marks, etc… If you have this PB layout and you’re thinking about this for your own desk, it was $257.00, including delivery. I didn’t shop around…just went with a local glass company, so you may be able to do better than that.

When I first moved my computer down the hall to this new office, I tried to go wireless and leave the modem and router in the old office. Despite having a very good router and good equipment, I saw a significant drop in speed. Plus, when my computer slept, upon awakening, I’d have to “reconnect” because it kept dropping. Super annoying. So, this past week, the Cable guy had to come out and move the wireless router and modem to the new office so I’m directly wired in again. I just have wireless for my laptop now, which also improved after moving the router and modem. Just sharing this info in case you run into a similar situation.

I had planned to hang the TV on the wall to the left of the shutters, but the cable guy didn’t want to fish an outside wall. Plus, I would have to move the shutters over to watch the TV. I rarely turn on the TV but I do like having one in the office. So I decided to just let it sit on the hutch there on the left. So, that isn’t a third monitor, although it’s about the same size. 😉

I’ve been giving a lot of thought to what I do and do not want in the office. One feature I knew I wanted was a place to just sit and read…a cozy reading nook. This past week I was out shopping for a rug for the office and I stopped by Pier 1. Isn’t it funny how you’ll be out shopping for one thing and you end up finding something else? Earlier in the week, I shared this sneak preview of a chair I found for the office. (Not sure why the fabric looks like it has ridges here. It doesn’t, it’s actually smooth.)

So, at last…here’s the chair…the chair that stole my heart in Pier 1 last week. 🙂 I love English Cottage style and I wanted a cottage feel for the office, so this chair was perfect for what I’m trying to achieve in here. And it is super comfortable.

I love, love, love the pleated skirt around the bottom. It goes all the way around, even across the back. 🙂 Green is my favorite color so the fabric totally stole my heart. I placed it against the wall where I’ve been removing the wallpaper today so you could see it against a neutral background.

But it’s really going to go over here against this wall…the one that currently has a mural on it. (I hung one of the drop cloths behind it just for this pic since the mural is really distracting.) Ultimately, I’ll place a round table beside it with a table lamp. The floor lamp is just temporary and will go back to the family room once I find a table for this spot. I’ve been shopping the thrift stores this weekend in search of one, but haven’t found one, yet.

By the way, if you really like this chair and think you may want one, go NOW to Pier 1 and buy it. The clerk who helped me told me it came in on Friday. I saw it and bought it on Monday. It was piled high with cushions so no one could really see it or I don’t think it would have still been there. They only have 6 in their warehouse here, so I don’t think they will be getting a lot of them in. It’s called, “Rosalie.”

So, those are the changes that have been going on around here lately. If you haven’t seen the “Before” posts about this room, click HERE, HERE and HERE. Hopefully by next week, the wallpaper will be gone and I’ll be well on the way to repairing the walls and painting them.

Can’t wait to see what you’ve been up to this week!

Oh Susan, I love the office! And that chair: I'm in LOVE with the Pier 1 chair! I was in there about a week or so ago and they didn't have it then. Don't know where on earth I'd put it. But it's gorgeous with those pleats. This looks to me to be a tranquil place for you to have your office space. As usual, beautiful job. And thank for hosting!

  6. How darling is the skirt on that chair? I don't think I have ever seen such a nice full one. What a great piece to build your room around. Do you know of a place to get table coverings for those little round tables? I thrifted one not long ago, and I can't find a round cover small enough, want to hang an old square lace topper over it. Keep up the good work!
    Hugs, Lisa

  39. I have been a rather passive reader of your blog for more than a year. Started reading in Ohio and continued after we moved to Villa Rica last year. I so admire your energy and creativity. You do things the way I would if I had as much vision as you do. Now that we are in Lithuania for 5 months, I continue to check in on you. I don't have to go to the University today, and at -9 degrees F. windchill temp., I am certainly not going out just because, so I am visiting "friends" like you. All my Skyping buddies are busily sleeping.
Thanks again for your hard work.

  43. Susan things are really looking great…love the lookout perch for Max.
You might try getting your foam from an upholstery supply place. We have a shop that's local here where you can take your pattern and they will cut it for you. That way you can get your good foam and not pay for a work shop to do it for you. Just check in your yellow pages.
    Have a fun week!

  44. I love how your office is coming together! It looks so crisp and fresh … the reading chair fabric is so pretty! And, clearly, Max is excited about his new spot in the sun! Thanks for hosting! Becca (www.adventuresindecorating1.blogspot.com)

I just love the way the office is coming. It is so warm and inviting.

  46. Kathy @ Creative Home Expressions says

I don't have a link up today, Susan, but I did want to tell you how nicely your office is coming along. The glass is a great idea; I'd probably do the same especially with white. When my daughter was a teen I took my son's old desk (that was obsolete with a new furniture purchase) and made it into a vanity for her. It was white and I had a piece of glass cut for the top and did a fabric skirt around the bottom. Saved a lot on make-up and nail polish messes!

Love the chair from Pier 1! They have such nice chairs there, too. I always look at them even though I'm not buying one. I did buy a chair from them last year that was going quick and had to go to a second store to get it.

  58. Hi there Susan 🙂 The office is looking great! If you are looking for some thicker, firmer foam try ebay. I found some 5" thick replacement foam and the Dacron wrap for a sofa from an ebay store "The Foam Guys" They are located in High point NC. They may have what your looking for 🙂

I really love how it is all coming together. The desk area is wonderful. You have 2 monitors? Why is that…just curious? I've made a small off in my daughter's room, but I've also kept it "her room" even though she is only home once a year. I think she is still young enough she likes knowing it is still there…I'd rather have something that looks like yours!

  62. Susan, your office is looking so good and I'm enjoying the stages of progress. That chair has stolen my heart too. It is darling with the ruffle and I just love how fresh it looks.

    This is always so fun!
    Such great ideas!

    Love LOVE the chair!

  68. Liz@http://infusewithliz.blogspot.com/ says

Well first I wanted to say the chair from Pier 1 was quite a find! They sure are expanding what they carry these days. Your office is coming along so nicely. I'm curious why longer cable couldn't have been run to the tv in the location you wanted? Perhaps it will be easier to look at- at the level you have it now anyway. The rug looks good, I'm curious how it will handle the wheel motion from the chair. I had to put a plastic piece down on my carpet, got tired of fighting to move the chair around after it would sink in a bit.

  69. I'm as "green with envy" as the green in that wonderful chair. Just kidding, well, maybe not totally kidding! This space is truly awesome. I love the wonderful white furniture, the new chair, the floors, your lovely window with such a grand view–did I miss anything. Can't wait to see it all finished.

  83. pier 1 still has that chair and i think you sealed the deal for me, i am off to buy it at my local pier 1 today! it looks great in your office (which i am sure is all done now since this is an old post), i just adore the skirt on that chair!!

  84. Hi Susan, I am interested buying the bedford set home office that you have, how does it work for you? there are some negative comments on the PB website about the quality of the desk, and the file cabinet drawers etc. Did you find the file drawers are hard to pull out? does the set show lots of dings ans scratches? thanks!-Gina

    • Hi Gina,
I haven’t had any problems with dings/scratches because I had glass cut to cover the top. I noticed the desk in my local PB store had a plastic protector over the desk, so I figured a protector would be a good idea. Since I was going with the antique white color, I had a feeling the white finish would be easy to scratch and would probably show scratches more easily than a dark stain. I didn’t want to have to worry about dragging my keyboard across it or ink or pen marks, etc… so I went to the added expense of having glass cut to cover the top. PB sell a plastic protector (or they used to, not sure if they still do) but the plastic cover in the store was curling up at the edge, so that’s why I had glass cut for mine. Regarding dings, I had a desk chair for about a week and the metal arms were dinging the front edge of the desk each time I moved it forward. They stuck out pretty far. So, I returned it and went back to an armless chair. I haven’t had problems with any of the file drawers. The only drawer that sticks sometimes is the short, wide drawer in the desk hutch that’s on top of the desk. It sticks occasionally, I may need to wax the bottom edges. My desk has held up fine. It’s not fine furniture. It says that’s it “constructed of wood, MDF and veneers.” But it has worked well for my needs. If someone buys it and doesn’t like it, I would definitely return it. I think you have at least 30 days. Also, when I first ordered my desk furniture, one desk piece had a couple of imperfections in the top paint. I called PB and the ordered a new one for me and it was delivered to my local PB store. Since I really didn’t have any way to get that defective piece back down the stairs by myself, one of the guys there at the store brought the piece to my home and took the defective piece away. I don’t think they normally do that but the PB is just 2 miles away. So if you do order it, look it over well when it first arrives to make sure the paint finish is fine. I do recommend either buying the plastic protector or having glass cut for the top. I don’t know if they make plastic protectors for all the pieces, they used to for the corner desk. You just reminded me of a post I meant to write ages ago. I get email about which pieces I purchased and how I set mine up so sometime soon I’ll try to create a post about which pieces I purchased to get the arrangement I have and to have all the tops level with each other…no step downs.

      • Hi,

Can you tell me the sizes for the corner glass protector? It looks like 3 pieces, and I just want to be sure before having a glass cut for my desk that hasn’t arrived yet. The acrylic one the PB sells is horrible, and not worth the price for that cheap mess.

        Thanks!

        • It is three pieces. The two small “side” pieces are 23 inches by 23 inches. I can’t really give you the measurements for the large center section because it’s very oddly shaped. The glass guy came to my home and made a template of it before he cut it. Yeah, the acrylic PB ones looked terrible at the PB near my home…they were curling up, so that’s why I had glass cut.

    • In case it’s helpful, here’s the post about the desk chair I had that didn’t work out. It shows the dings that chair was causing: https://betweennapsontheporch.net/the-quest-for-a-comfortable-desk-chair-take-3/

  85. hi Susan!
thank you so much for the quick and detailed reply. it sure will help me to make decisions!
    Thanks again,
    -Gina
