The other thing I’m working on today is installing this on the back deck.  Gonna be some happy birds this winter.

Heated Bird Bath

So, whatcha up to this Saturday? I hope it’s something that makes you as happy as a bird in the winter with a hot tub. 😉

Wonderful! You’re getting me into the holiday spirit. Do you feel happy? We just moved here in June so it’s been all grunt work and no fun.
I have been in love with your loft forever. In fact, it inspired me to do my bedroom in Blue/Yellow/White. Collecting fabric swatches at this point. Your pics have been pinned, copied and drooled over.

I’m new to blogs and Pintrest. How did I survive without all of you. Thank you.

  2. I’ve always wanted to do this but can’t figure out how you attach the wreaths. It looks like you might put a ribbon all the way through the window? I have screens and wonder how I can do this unless I just take the screens out too. Please advise…looks beautiful!

    • Connie, just click on that link I included in this post and it will take you to another post where I shared how I do it. It would be a pain to do it with screens in the windows and I’m afraid the wreaths my tear the screens. I took mine out when I first moved here 22 years ago because I prefer the look without them and with my son’s allergies, I never opened the windows anyway. What a lot of folks do here is remove screens from the front windows of their home and leave them on the back, in case they do want to open them for fresh air. Some subdivisions here won’t even allow screens on the front of a home, which is kind of weird that they do that.

  3. Your wreaths are so beautiful and your home looks gorgeous with them in all the windows. Big job, but enjoy. Hugs, Marty

    • Big job, indeed! The hardest part is getting the windows down, although this year should be easier since they haven’t been painted in a few years. Have a wonderful weekend, Marty!

  4. Yea! I’ll be doing the same thing next weekend. We took out the front screens also, and for the same reasons. I’ve maintained the wreaths in the windows look over the years, even when neighbors changed their Christmas decor. It’s such a beautiful classic look. Can’t wait to see your pictures this year. Merry Christmas!

  5. Hi Susan! Where did you buy your wreaths? They look very full and fluffy, mine look somewhat crushed and worn after 12 years. I think it may be time to replace!

    • Pam, I bought those so many years ago, it’s hard to remember. I’ve been putting wreaths on my windows for about 28-29 years. The first set I purchased were not very nice, but it was all I could find back then. After using those about 6-7 years, I found these and as you said, they were a good bit fluffier. So I donated the old one and began using these. They were also slightly flocked although that’s kind of worn off some over the years. I am guessing I found them in either Michaels or maybe Pike Nurseries, a local nursery that sells all kinds of Christmas stuff each year. Walmart may have some, if you have an Old Time Pottery near you, check there, too. Oh, and check Target. I’d start with the discount stores because if you’re doing a lot of windows, it can add up. But then you have them pretty much forever. I’ve only replaced the bows once and that was mainly because I wanted longer streamers. If you use outdoor bows/ribbon, they last forever, just like the wreaths.

      • Thanks for the info! I have 9 windows to do, so I will be keeping my eye out for sales! But as you said, they last forever, so investing in high quality is the way to go.

  6. Thanks so much for the tutorial, Susan. I read it a few weeks ago and I just completed making my wreaths the other day. So excited to put them up! Have fun toda! Jane.

  7. Susan-so beautiful I just might have the photo printed on the front of our Christmas cards!!

  8. Everyone will be able to enjoy your lovely Christmas decorations with your new landscaping this year! 🙂

  9. I have always wanted to do this, however, how do thy stay “good” with inclement weather? Despite the eaves, sometimes rain, sleet, snow, blow against the windows.

    • We don’t get a lot of snow here but we get everything else, along with plenty of rain in the winter. They (and the bows) have held up well. I’m surprised they haven’t faded but they appear to be pretty much like they were when I bought them many years ago.

  10. I love the wreaths on the windows, I might have to try that this year. I have had that birdbath for about five years and it is wonderful. The birds are really going to love you 🙂

  11. I don’t put up any Christmas decor until December 1 and because our little cottage is very small, I don’t go big. But, I am definitely going to use your tutorial for putting my wreaths on my front windows.

    Thanks for the inspiration.

  12. Oh my! Look at all of those wreaths!!! Looks like you are going to be having fun this weekend!! That birdbath is amazing…didn’t even know that they made them heated!

  13. Oh Susan, the line of wreaths for your Windows is perfect, you even manage to place your C´mas stuff with such art!

How gorgeous everything is gonna look, I can’t wait to see it! I am all decked out, except for my Tksgiving tables, but sorrounded with C’mas decor, lol! Have fun and watch your back, I ended up in some pain.

  14. You sure will have some happy birds ! I too am getting all the Christmas things out. Slow start. It is not to early to begin, in fact I feel I am late already. I haven’t started outside- but one has to do it on a nice warm day. Have a great day!!

  15. Hi Susan!
You always do such an amazing job on your home, I hope you have some help because it looks like a lot of work!
Tomorrow we’re going to do the lights outside because we’re supposed to be getting some cold, cold weather next week. I won’t plug them in yet. I’ll wait until next weekend to do the wreaths – but I don’t have that many windows in the front, so it will only take a few minutes. The porch is what is the most time consuming on Lavender Hill – wrapping all the columns and swagging the railings takes two people about an hour or so!

Can’t wait to see your house all decorated! Have a great weekend –
    gena

  16. I know your house will look Christmas beautiful it always does. 🙂 I know Mr. & Mrs. Bird will love their hot tub, I wonder if Mr. & Mrs. Squirrel/Raccoon will too? 😉

    • lol I have a feeling they will…and let’s not forget Mr. Chipmunk! I just hope Mr. Squirrel doesn’t chew it to bits. He’s been gnawing on one of my fiberglass planters out there this summer. Bad Squirrel!

  17. Susan,
Beautiful, and classic! I too have hung wreaths on my front windows for 20 years. My method of hanging is like yours, however at the end of the ribbon at the top where it goes out the window, I put two large safety pins in a cross fashion. We get horrible winds quite a bit here and my wreaths will move around, they have even turned over at times , but I have never had one to fall down. I think your method is great as well, just another suggestion. 🙂 I only hang 4, and like you the worst part is getting the window down from the top, and in my case, I have to move the furniture that sits under the windows as well! It is so worth it. I love seeing it at night with my candles in the center of the wreaths.
    Blessings

I think your method is great as well.

  18. I do the same wreaths on my windows, but I’m happy there are only three to do!

Hee .. hee .. hee … *jingle, jingle, jingle.* 😉

  20. My engineer husband asked me to please wrap the wire parts that touch the window with tape so they don’t scratch. We used to live way north and the wind and blizzards were problems. Also after doing this for many years my darling man started buying light timers so we wouldn’t have to run around plugging and unplugging the lights. It was a great kid job till they grew up. I have candles in all our windows so we spent a lot of time plugging/unplugging. Also it is nice to go to sleep to “candlelight”. The timers go on sale at odd times of the year so this is something to remember in July.

  21. pam ~ crumpety cottage says

I’m just going off topic here to point out how many Pam’s post here! There are three of us in this thread alone and I believe there is a Pamela who posts as well. In all my many years, I’ve only met one other Pam. Yet here on the porch, Susan has a plethora. She seems to have the Pam / Pamela contingent wrapped up, lol. 😀

    • My best friend from nursery school till 4th grade(when my family moved) was also Pam. Gained a friend named Pam at the new place. Do not currently have a friend Pam in my life. I’m a boomer. Are the other ladies boomers?

  22. Busy, busy workerbee! It’s lots of work that feels like play. Looking forward to all of your holiday posts.

  23. I love your room! It looks so comfy & cozy, I want to live there. The wreaths on the windows are beautiful.

  24. The light you have under your eaves calls to me to curl up with a book and kitty and have a nap.
Your wreaths are beautiful. How do you store them so they don’t crush?
Think I’ll grab a book and kitty right now!
Thanks for sharing your beautiful home.
ps The room at the end of the hall looks gorgeous. Do you have pics posted of it? ty

  25. Ohh! I think we’re on the same wavelength, Susan! Let me know how that birdbath works out….I’ve thought about those year after year, but never taken the plunge (no pun intended). Your wreaths are lovely!

  26. Your home looks ***magnificent*** with the wreaths! I have to read the tutorial, mine always sway in the wing (cold Midwestern wind!). And how sweet, you bird lover! I have to check into these!

    XO,
    Jane

  27. I meant wind! lol! Like I have a wing in my house!!!

    XO,
    Jane

  28. Your home is sure to be beautiful when you are done, Susan! I would ike to purchase a bird bath like yours. Where did you purchase it? I keep buying the metal bird bath heaters every year, and they only last a short time and then they fizzle out. This one looks !

  30. Wreaths rock! Luv the birdbath concept!! franki

I am a loving your new heated bird bath. Our bird garden is so sad in the winter giggle. I do continue to feed those few birds that stay behind in our cold Utah winters though. Hugs!
