A Screened Porch Addition, No Haints Allowed!

Welcome to the 339th Metamorphosis Monday!

Recently I received the nicest e-mail from Gloria. She recently added a screened-in porch on to the back of her home and it turned out beautifully!

Gloria said, “I found you and your blog in 2012 when I was doing my research to convert a deck on the west side of my house to a screened porch.  My husband and I never used the deck because it was just too hot and buggy.

In early 2012 while considering makeover projects for the house, we decided to convert the deck to a screened porch.  Once I found you, I found everything I needed to know!  Your post about the cost of a screened porch was so informative and influential on the things that I wanted in my porch.  Plus, you and I have nearly identical taste so I used your porch, décor and all, as my inspiration.

Unfortunately, I do not have any photos of the deck to show you the “before” view of the back of the house. We found a truly fabulous builder who built our porch and tied it into our house in such a way that it looks like it was always a part of the house.”

“Our house is a Victorian style home.  Want to know how good our builder is?  Here’s a view of the exterior entrance to the porch.  My builder selected the door and it is perfect!” Gloria’s Victorian style door is perfect and really helps tie her porch in beautifully with her home. Let’s go inside and check it out!

As you step inside, this would be your view. Notice the two bamboo and wicker table lamps on the right–aren’t they the cutest! They are waterproof and designed especially to use on porches. Gloria found them at Plow & Hearth online. I love the style!

Gloria furnished her porch with lots of great wicker and painted her ceiling haint blue. Love that! Won’t be any haints hangin’ around this house! 😉

Gloria said, “We wanted a gable roof to give an open, airy feel to the porch.  I chose to paint the ceiling blue thanks to you and the porch books you recommended in your post. Our porch is 11 ft. by 22 ft.  so we needed two fans to properly cool the porch.”

Since Gloria went with wicker for her porch furnishings, she decided to go with the same outdoor fans I chose for my porch due to their wicker-like design.. I had to special order mine when I purchased them. Fortunately, they are now available for purchase here: Hunter Ceiling Fan with Wicker-Design

Gloria said, “I found all of the wicker furniture on Craigslist and paid next to nothing for it.  The most expensive piece was the chaise and I paid only $125 for it.  I just love that the furniture is all vintage and mismatched.” I love that, too!

The floor lamp you see below is another waterproof lamp, also from Plow & Hearth.

Gloria said, “Based on your suggestion, I have electrical outlets all over the porch. I don’t like overhead lighting and wanted the warmer, cozier look of lamp light. The fans are controlled by a wall switch next to the interior door of the house.  There is a second switch there which controls the two fountains that we installed in the surrounding flower beds this year.

We chose to use indoor/outdoor carpeting on the floor of the porch so our dogs would have a comfortable place to roll around on the floor.” Then Gloria wrote, “Case in point” referring the photo below. 🙂

Sooo cute! Our furbabies love screened-in porches as much as we do!

Gloria said, “We live in Pennsylvania so we can use the porch from April through early November, depending on the weather.  My husband and I, together with our four dogs, enjoy this porch so much!!  We eat dinner out here nearly every night and enjoy the gentle breeze from the fans and the joyful gurgle of the water from the fountains.  We agree that adding the porch was one of the best improvements that we made to our house.”

Gloria, thanks so much for sharing your wonderful porch with us and about all the great features you included in its design. I loved hearing how much you, your hubby, and adorable furbabies are enjoying it. Once you’ve had a screened porch, it’s hard to imagine not having one. They spoil you quickly!

Looking forward to all the fabulous Before and Afters for this Met Monday!

  1. What a fabulous place to hang out! Thanks for the party!!

  2. I love the haint blue ceiling! Thanks for another great screened porch tour~ by the way, I have been trying not to run to Sephora to smell that pricey perfume 🙂 Thanks for the party Susan~

    • Well, it had me in its grips as soon as I smelled it! 🙂 I discovered yesterday, they make a “travel set” that’s supposed to be a really good deal. You get a good amount of perfume for only $35 and the reviews are very good for it. I added that link to the post since it’s a great way to try it out.

  3. Fabulous porch! Thanks for the party and have a great week, Susan!

  4. I just love seeing how people share their own projects and are even influenced by your blog, Susan. This was a really nice one, and shows the family keeps it real, really using their porch, not just for show. Thanks for continuing to host all these great home projects. Have a great week.

  5. I am not surprised someone followed you to the T. Your posts are always very thorough and cover all points. Gloria has a beautiful screened in porch now. Have a happy week Susan.

  6. That chaise is so inviting and I love that it is vintage. Susan, in a way, you are becoming the Johnny Appleseed of porches.

  7. Thank you so much for sharing Gloria’s screened porch – after much persuasion, I was finally able to convince my hubby that we need to add a screened porch to the house we’re going to build 🙂 So now I’m on the hunt for screened porch ideas! Love the Haint Blue ceiling and that there’s a big wicker bed for the dogs 🙂

  8. I’m giggling at Mia’s comment above – you’re becoming the Johnny Appleseed of porches LOL – but it’s true !!!
Thanks so much for another great party Susan – hope you have a wonder
    week !

  9. Thanks so much for the party!!

  10. I love this beautiful porch and how great that Gloria gained inspiration and tips from your wonderful suggestions and your gorgeous porch. I love it when you feature your readers and the projects that have done from inspiration that you were able to provide!….A truly great thing!….Thanks for hosting and have a great day Susan!!!

  11. This is wonderful! Thank you for the wonderful post! I’m so glad I found your blog!! Thank you for doing what you do….not only is it informative, but it brings such joy and inspiration.

  12. Susan, I love Gloria’s screened in porch too! The contractor did a really great job of tying the porch in with the rest of the house. Love the lamps too, may have to check those out. Thanks for another great post and party!

  13. Thanks so much for the party Susan! Take care, Tara

  14. I can just feel the tranquilty and, obviously, so can the pooches! The bubbling fountains are also a wonderful exterior addition. And the ample seating makes for great conversation possibilities! Thanks for sharing, Gloria and Susan.

  15. Great, warm and inviting place to spend the Summer relaxing. I love the patriotic pillows, wish I had one. They don’t sell them here. Hope to find one now that I will be in Florida for the birth of my granddaughter in November.
Thanks for the super party, I am the met-Monday one today, lol!
    Have a fun week.

Wonderful! I love that she took her cues from you, even the haint blue ceiling, lol. That ceiling color really is very pretty.

Gloria’s porch really does look as though it’s always been with the house. I also like the little mulched area all around the exterior of the addition, with the trees and so forth.

And I too got a kick out of Mia’s comment about you being the Johnny Appleseed of screened porches, lol. They do make so much sense though. And the fact that they are able to use theirs about 7-8 months out of the year is awesome. I know when I have a screened porch I’ll use it as often as I can. Thanks to Gloria for sharing her great new porch. 🙂

  17. I love the idea of a screened porch. No bugs and fans to stir the breeze. However, I would like an area I could use for all seasons. I love this idea from Betsy Speert’s blog. Her contractor used storm door inserts and got the best of both worlds. For those. like me, teetering on the edge of committing to building, here is the address.

  18. Thanks for the party Susan!

  19. Thank you for hosting Susan!

  20. I’m with Gloria! Your porch is want made me start wanting a screened porch of my own and it was a “must have” when we bought our home last year. We are out on the porch every morning and every evening. The loveliest thing about it is that it keeps us away from television and bad news, and also inspires us not to work long into the evening as we can hardly wait to get out to our relaxing space. The next thing I’d like to do is paint my ceiling blue and whitewash the wooden floors. Maybe next season!
Thanks for hosting and always putting up such inspiring posts Susan.
    Blessings to you dear lady,
    Patti

    • Thanks, Patti! It’s amazing how porches draw us out, isn’t it? I love that you guys are enjoying it so much…they really do bring a lot into your life. I love sitting on mine in the evening and listening to the frogs and watching the lightning bugs. 🙂

  21. What a lovely screened in porch Susan!

  22. Another beautiful porch Susan. Love the blue ceiling! Thanks so much for sharing it and for hosting. Have a great week!

  23. The porch is amazing. A screened-in porch is something I’ve always wanted but never had. Thanks for sharing, and thanks for the party!

  24. Kathleen says

I think this is a wonderful space! I need ice tea after looking at all the great pics and thinking about a porch. I had porches at every relative’s home, from east coast to Texas in my lifetime. Sadly, my children didn’t get to have a great porch during their growing up years. I really want to add one so maybe my future grandkids will remember time on the porch. If this isn’t being too nosey, is the porch on a foundation or post&beams? Is just the construction cost – no furnishings – under $50 thousand? Thanks for info.

    • Hi Kathleen! Thanks for your kind words about my porch! To answer your question, our porch sits on posts and beams that our deck sat on. Our builder said that these parts of the deck were very sound and would provide sufficient support for the porch. We were glad about that because pouring a foundation would have been very expensive. Thanks for your interest!
      Gloria

    • Gloria in Pgh says

Kathleen: Forgot to answer the last part of your question. The total cost of our porch was WELL under $50k. In fact, the cost was under $20k.
      Kind regards,
      Gloria

I love seeing all these screened in porches.
Here in Australia for some reason, we have open verandah’s around our houses, & the screened in idea hasn’t really taken off, especially where I live in a sub tropical area in a timber Queenslander house, which are designed for the tropics (from India originally) with lots of flow through breezes, no air con needed, we have natures air con.
I like the idea of the screened in verandah, but sitting in my kitchen with the screened French doors & windows either side of me, I might as well be on the verandah, & if we do sit outside, I just light mozzie coils.
    Still it’s an interesting concept.
    I love your posts.

    • pam ~ crumpety cottage says

Philippa, we recently learned what a Queenslander was when Susan featured pictures from the movie, Australia, here. Very lovely style of house. I find it interesting that they are up a bit off the ground for air flow. But as hot as it gets in Australia, I really can’t imagine getting by without air conditioning!

  26. Philippa says

    Hi Pam,
The film Australia was filmed inland, and that could change everything with the air con situation.
I live near the coast (sort of near Byron Bay which I’m sure you’ve heard of) so we get the lovely north easterly breezes in summer which is the cooling wind, not cold.
Some people still have air con, but I don’t like it anyway, we have ceiling fans, and I actually like feeling temperatures that are either side of comfortable. (My husband would disagree)
    Thanks for your reply.
    Cheers,
    Philippa

I see. I love a good breeze. We are fortunate in that our house is placed in such a way that we get lovely breezes along the back, so sitting on the porch or by the pool is wonderful. I also love to throw open the windows in the breakfast nook and let the breezes flow. I wish every place in my house could catch the breeze.

  27. Thanks for another great party … and for sharing an awesome porch!

  28. The rooms look so beautiful!! Love it!!
