A New Addition for My Home Office

Welcome to the 678th Metamorphosis Monday!

There’s a new addition here in my office. It may not be the most aesthetically pleasing piece that I’ve added to this room, but I’m definitely enjoying it. Recently, I was thinking how nice it would be if I had a smallish treadmill here in the office so when I was in the mood to watch a YouTube video or anything online, I could also be “out for a walk” at the same time. I didn’t want to spend a lot and didn’t want anything really, really big that would take up a lot of space in this room.

Initially, I purchased a different treadmill, one that did not have arms/handrails.  It was listed as an “under the desk treadmill” but the ad also included a video showing it being used in the center of a room for walking and running. After it arrived, I quickly discovered that I do not like walking on a treadmill that has no arms or anything by which you can gauge where you are on the treadmill. I found myself looking down every few seconds because I never felt like I knew exactly where I was–was I too far back or too far forward? Was I about to step on the front of the treadmill or slip off the back?

Since I wanted the treadmill for the purpose of being able to walk while watching a video on my computer monitor, having to continuously look down to see how close I was to the front or back edge was not going to work. I returned that treadmill after trying it just a couple of times. After my experience, I would never recommend buying a treadmill that has no arms or anything to touch/hold unless you are strictly using it in front of a desk.

This is the treadmill I purchased next and it is so much better! It takes up no more floor space than the first one I tried and was right around the same price. Actually, it’s on sale now, so even better. (Note: I think the photo below must be taken at a weird angle or the woman is photoshopped in because when walking on the treadmill, the desk is much lower down than it appears in the photo below.)

The big difference between it and the previous treadmill is it has a built-in desk space that easily holds a laptop, iPad, or phone. I can lightly rest my hands on the handles and feel completely comfortable watching a video on the large computer monitor on my desk without ever having to look down to see where I am, or how close I am to the front or the back.

I could push it over closer to the bookcases in this room, but it’s perfect in this spot and doesn’t heed my path to my desk.

I love how it keeps track of how long I’ve been walking, my speed, the number of steps I’ve taken, the distance I’ve walked, and the calories I’ve burned. All that is displayed on the monitor that you see sticking up. I didn’t think to turn it on when I took my photos, but you can see the display here: Display on Treadmill.  It’s also very quiet so I can easily hear whatever I’m watching while I’m walking.

Another big difference with this treadmill over the previous one is when I’m done and I turn it off, it slows down gradually. The other treadmill stopped suddenly and almost threw me off with that sudden stop. Didn’t like that at all! This one is awesome–it gradually starts with a countdown so you’re ready when it starts and gradually slows down when you’re done. So far, it’s perfect–exactly what I was hoping for in a treadmill. You can see more photos and read more about it here: Treadmill with Desk.

  1. This looks like a great treadmill. I think you’ve found one that’s safe and functional. Thanks for having us over, Susan. Hope you’re staying warm and safe with all the crazy weather you’ve been getting down there!

    • Thanks, Debra! Yup, snug as a bug. I love the sunshine days we’re having right now. Cold isn’t so bad when it’s sunny out. Hope you are seeing sunshine in your area!

  2. You always have great recommendations, Susan! I have one question- how heavy is this? Did you carry it upstairs yourself? Thanks.

    • It’s pretty heavy, I would recommend two people carrying it if you’re taking it upstairs. Over the years, I’ve gotten really good at figuring out how to get big stuff upstairs by myself, but two people would be best since it weighs over 70 lbs. I pushed the box on its side across my garage floor, got it up and into the kitchen, pushed it to the back staircase which is carpeted, and then kinda cartwheeled it up the first small section of stairs since the box was longer than that first section of stairs. Then I turned it on the landing while it was on its end, laid it down flat on the next section of stairs, and pushed it uphill, bracing it with my thigh as I gradually moved it up from one step to the next. Once enough of the box was onto the bonus room carpet, it was easy to push it on into that room. Then I pushed it across the carpeted bonus room and down the hall to my office. It wouldn’t be a big deal for a strong guy but I still recommend two people carrying it if it’s going to an upstairs room. If it’s staying on the main floor, it could just be pushed in the box or dragged on a blanket (another technique I use a lot) to where it needs to go.

      • Oh my goodness! That sounds like a serious workout, just getting it to your office. Glad you found a good one.
        Kathy

      • I am amazed at your strength! I am picturing you cartwheeling that 70 lbs. up the stairs!! I used to be pretty strong myself. Hitting 70+ has really curtailed what I can do. I couldn’t even lift my Christmas tote onto my three tier shelf cart (6 ft tall) without difficulty. Learning to adjust.

  3. Have fun with your new treadmill! Thanks Susan~

  4. Does this model fold down so that you could slide it under a couch or bed, if needed?

    • It does fold down but I don’t think you would want to do that very often because you would have to unscrew two toggle knobs and two other screws each time. It would be a pain to have to do that and time-consuming. This one is better for when you want to keep it in place all the time. It works great for my needs since I wanted it in place all the time so I can hop on multiple times a day to walk.

    • Bernadette, I may be wrong about how easy it is to fold up. Maybe you don’t have to unscrew all the screws that hold the monitor in place, etc……maybe you only have to unscrew the two toggle screws which can be done by hand…because I noticed in the reviews, people were saying that it folds up easily. I haven’t tried that since I don’t want to put it away.

  5. Doesn’t that look fun!? I love that it has a desk too. Thanks for the great recommendation, and for hosting another wonderful party. Happy Monday!

  6. Just curious Susan of the feasibility of folding it up each time? I have a smallish office but would enjoy this to use as you do. Have you tried folding it up each time?

    • In my opinion, this is not a good treadmill for folding up after each use. You would have to unscrew two toggle bolts and unscrew 2-4 more screws to lower the handrails and monitor that comes on it. This one is better left in place full time.

    • Toni, I may be wrong about how easy it is to fold up. Maybe you don’t have to unscrew all the screws that hold the monitor in place, etc……maybe you only have to unscrew the two toggle screws which can be done by hand…because I noticed in the reviews, people were saying that it folds up easily. I haven’t tried that since I don’t want to put it away.

  7. Do you still have your Peloton?

  8. Do you feel you would use this more over the bike? I don’t have room for either one. I don’t think I am disciplined enough to use either to their fullest. It sounds like you have found the right one for you and it fits in your office space. Happy treading!

    • I probably will end using this more because it’s right here in my office AND I could even read or work on a blog post while walking, as long as I’m not walking too fast. With the Peloton, I do a lot of standing up in the pedals while I’m biking, so that limits doing other things. It’s just a more active kind of exercise.

  9. Hi Susan,
Although I’ve never commented, I enjoy your blog very much and have purchased several items that you have reviewed and recommended. I’ve wanted a small treadmill for sometime. I read your review, followed the link and read all the positive reviews and went ahead and purchased; bonus was the discount coupon. While they gave the measurements for everything else, they didn’t mention the length of the electrical cord and whether it is three pronged. Would you please let me know both? I’m getting my space ready for delivery. Thank you.

    • Thanks so much, Margie! Appreciate you being here and reading! I just measured and the cord appears to be right at 6 feet long…and it does have a 3-prong plug. Hope you enjoy it as much as I’m enjoying mine! 🙂

  10. Thank you Susan. Much appreciated.

  11. Susan,
Thanks again for hosting this lovely party every week! I know how much time goes into doing so and I want you to know that it is greatly appreciated!! Stay safe, healthy and happy!!
    Hugs,
    Debbie

I’m totally on the same page as you with the “armless” treadmill. We bought one for our dog to walk next to us while we walked on our bigger treadmill (that has arms). Now the dog won’t walk on the armless treadmill, only the bigger one. So we have to walk on the armless one while she’s on the big one! (Haha). Since they’re side by side, we hold onto the arm from the big one while walking. (what we won’t do for our animals :))

Happy for you and your new purchase. I figured you were still using the Peloton, but sometimes you just have to change up your routine, depending on your mood and energy level. I think that’s great, that way your won’t get bored and loose interest. Variety is the spice of life, right?! Haha. I still enjoy swimming laps at the Y, but occasionally I like to do water aerobics or do the water walk in the lazy river walking either with the current or against the current. Can’t wait for spring to take my bike on more bike trails. This year I am determined to do more and follow the path along our local river, enjoying it’s beautiful blue water.

  14. Thanks so much for your treadmill recommendation. I have purchased several things you have recommended and have always been pleased. Could you tell me if this treadmill would work for a man as well? It looked somewhat short so wanted to ask you before ordering! Thanks so much and love your blog very much!

    • I think it would because I noticed some of the reviews are from men and one shows a man on the treadmill, or at least I think that’s a guy in the photos. The max weight limit is 265 so as long as they aren’t over that weight, it should be fine. Not sure it would be good for very tall men, though–not sure they would be comfortable with the length. I’m 5’4″ and it’s great for my height. I’m not sure a guy who is 6 feet or over would find it long enough for their stride, though.

      • Thanks so much Susan! That is very helpful! My husband is 5’9 so that should work for both of us! You are very kind to respond. Much appreciated…..

        • Sure! Leigh, I’m not sure it’s available right now. I noticed when I first shared it, it was saying there was something like 18 of them available, and I think it was a Prime purchase at that time. Now it doesn’t look like it’s available. I bet they will get more in, though.

  15. Thank you for letting me know!

  16. How is the treadmill holding up? The model you recommended is no longer available but I was wondering if you were happy with the brand. Thank you so much.

    • It’s still doing great–no complaints. I remember when I purchased mine, there were quite a few online that looked like the one I purchased, so you may find it available under a different name/brand.
