Stain Your Deck With An Oil-Based Stain For Longer-Lasting Protection

Welcome to the 292nd Metamorphosis Monday!

Every few years I have my house, porches and decks professionally pressure-washed. Once that’s completed, it’s usually time to reapply a protective coat of stain to the floor of the decks. This year I decided to try something different.

In the past I’ve always used a water-based stain and I haven’t been too happy with how well it has held up, or I should say, hasn’t held up. Since my decks are underneath a lot of trees in my backyard, the decks require cleaning yearly. No matter what system I use to clean them, they always end up needing another application of stain afterwards.

This year I went a completely different route. Instead of using a water-based stain as I have in the past, I decided to go with an oil-based stain. Oil based stains are supposed to stand up to bad weather and the elements better than water-based stains, so hopefully I want have to stain near as often in the future.

I’m sharing the Before and After of this deck project at True Value on their “Projects” page.

Here’s how the deck looked right after cleaning…definitely in need of some weather-protecting stain.

How To Stain A Deck With Oil-Based Stain

I’m really pleased with how the oil-based stain went on and how it looked afterwards. You’ll find pictures of the completed project along with all the details about the staining process and the tools I used at True Value here: Staining Your Deck

Looking forward to seeing what you’ve been working on!

  1. I popped over to see your finished deck and it looks beautiful with the new stain Susan! Love the color! Wishing you a Happy Labor Day πŸ™‚

  2. Hi Susan,
Happy Labor Day! It’s a non-Labor Labor Day for me, as I’ve finished the basement (at least thus part of the project) – woohoo! Isn’t it nice when you can check things off the list like with your deck & sunporch? Thanks for hosting and keeping us all inspired to be accountable. πŸ™‚

  3. Susan, thanks for hosting! I’m sure your deck turned out great.

  4. Love the stain color that you chose, Susan! It does, indeed, look fabulous with your copper accents!

  5. Carolyn Price says

Very informative post and the decking looks great, Susan! We are currently in the process of deciding what to do with our new wood … penetrant or paint?
Loved the gate closing off the stairs. Wouldn’t want that grandson to take a tumble one day!

  6. Thanks so much for hosting, Susan, and your deck looks beautiful!

  7. Hello Susan, I do appreciate you hosting, Have a wonderful Labor Day,

  8. Thanks for hosting, Susan! Happy Week to You! Toodles, Kathryn @TheDedicatedHouse

  9. Susan, I popped over and tried to look at the “TRUE VALUE” deck re-do, I get frustrated cause my rural “DSL” is so slow, didn’t really show all the before and after photo’s (“sigh”), so I’m gonna have to use my imagination and “know” that it has turned out great….is this something new, teaming up with sponsors advertisements??? wow!! It’s kinda like your doing a commercial for “TRUE VALUE” gosh you are “celebrity”………………………. {[( I’ve been on long blog-break husband’s cancer and numerous trips to Tulsa-Cancer Treatment Centers
    of America)]}

Thanks for hosting MetMonday before and afters…have fun Labor Day.

    • No, not really new. True Value just puts together a DIY Squad each year and they ask me to help this year. It’s a lot of fun. I hope your hubby is doing much better! Hugs to you and him!

  10. Happy Labor Day, Susan! Thanks for hosting!…hugs…Debbie

  11. We need to redo our deck, but that’s on the list for next spring. I’m flagging your post. Thanks for hosting.

  12. Thank you so much for taking the time out of a busy holiday weekend to host Met Monday! We used to have a deck we had to re-stain every few years when we lived in Idaho. Now in Texas we have a brick patio and porch that does not need to be stained. I just hose it off and I am so happy to have one less project πŸ˜‰ Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

    Big Texas Hugs,
    Susan and Bentley

  13. Susan,
Oh, dear friend, I’m going to the link to see the after photos now!!!
Our deck(s) look exactly like yours now and we are needing to
find something that doesn’t require yearly manitenance, also!!!
“Mr. Ed” has been sketching a new front porch (no more deck)
and I’ve been looking at painting options for this area.
Thanks for sharing all the newest and latest products through
    your blog!!!
Thanks for hosting Metamorphosis Monday each week!!!
    Truly inspirational!!!
    Happy Labor Day!

  14. Oh I remember you had your gorgeous porch cleaned with water and now the oil stain idea sounds awesome! I hope you are happy with it and lasts longer for less time span cleaning.
Thanks for hosting, I love this party as I’ve been ‘metamorphosing’ this weekend, lol!
    Have a blessed week sweetie.

  15. You know I never would have considered the oil based. We have a ‘boardwalk’ that needs attention. I will definitely look into this. It’s just a walkway we had built from the back steps into the backyard. It helps get the dirt/leaves in the yard.

Thanks for hosting another great party!

I love the new color of the deck.
The photos of your before and after show how much
care you took into making this a great project.
Plus detailed instructions. Wish I had a deck. πŸ™

  17. I hope you have a great holiday. I am a little shocked that it suddenly became September. Where did the time go?

  18. Thanks for hosting. Love the deck. Have a wonderful Labor Day.

  19. You never cease to amaze me with your projects Susan! Wow! I hope you are maybe relaxing for a change on this Labor Day? Thanks for the Monday fun!

  20. i have to pressure wash our deck twice a year…usually about now and then again in early spring….i had every intention to put a stain on this year but that didn’t happen! i’m glad to see how yours turned out and maybe this will be just the thing to get me moving on cleaning and staining ours….i really like how yours turned out.

i hope you took the day off to get a little rest this Labor Day!

  21. Your porch and deck look gorgeous. Just like brand new. You should feel so happy and probably pooped out. I personally think it is the worse job in the world. Pressure washing isn’t as bad except your feet and the dirt all over your body. Our house now has no wood decking just brick. I am never doing it again. Our area is just too huge. I might pass out next time.– Susan you picked a great color for your deck. It goes perfect with your house. Now sit on your porch and enjoy looking at your hard word with a nice little cocktail.

  22. Susan, your decks look great. Your home always looks terrific. I don’t know how you have the time to do all you do.
Great party – thanks so much. You would love going to Just Like the Models.
    Have a great week.

  23. Girlfriend, you are amazing! That deck looks fabulous! The stain color is perfect. Great match with the copper post caps. WOW!

  24. Loved the stain color that you put on your deck. We need to redo ours so I can’t wait to hear how yours holds up. Thanks for sharing this and for hosting. Have a great week!

  25. pam ~ crumpety cottage says

Susan, you are one of a kind. πŸ˜€ You ‘like’ to stain. Haha, that’s great. I do agree about the instant gratification, but I’m looking at my days of liking it in the rear view window! It looks beautiful though. You picked a lovely, rich color. Nice job.

Btw, I love all the fall pics on the scrolling menu above. The fall porch pic is really getting me inspired. Where do you usually find your corn stalks? I generally have trouble finding really full ones. Maybe I’m waiting too long. If you have a regular place, please let me know.

  26. I hope it lasts better for you, but power washing is hard on all surfaces. The new color on your deck looks beautiful! We were lazy this year and didn’t do anything with the deck. It’s definitely going to need some TLC by next spring.

  27. The deck turned out fab Susan! Thanx for the party.

  28. Thank you so much for hosting. Enjoy he rest of your week! Hugs, Maria
