Tablescape Thursday Update

Update via my phone around 8:00 pm:

Unfortunately the power is still out, I’m one of about 50,000 people still without power in my area. Those 55+ mile per hour Zeta winds did a lot of damage here in the Atlanta area.

As soon as the power is restored, I should be able to have my post up within about an hour. Sorry Tablescape Thursday has been delayed. 🙁

Wondering how long the food in my freezer will last without electricity. I don’t think it’s going to last much longer.

My house has gas heat so I could purchase a gas stove and have the connection changed to gas. (I currently have an electric stove.) I’m tempted to do that sometime soon since it would have been nice to have cooked up some of the food in the freezer today.

Hope you are staying safe! 2020 continues to be a year none of us will soon forget!

End Update.

Currently creating this post on my phone. Tablescape Thursday will be going up a little later today. Hurricane / tropical storm Zeta ripped through Georgia and the Atlanta area in the middle of the night and over 1 million homes are without power.

My electricity has been out since around 4:00 a.m. The power is out throughout my neighborhood and the surrounding area. I hear chainsaws somewhere so I’m sure the power company is working hard to get the power back.

Once the power is back on, I’ll be able to upload the photos I took yesterday, finish the post and will send it out as soon as possible.

See you a little bit later today.

Susan ~ So happy to hear you’re safe as well as your beautiful home. When Hurricane Isaias roared through a few months ago we here in NW CT were out of power for 8 days. After 2-3 days the novelty wears off. Now we are supposed to get 2-3” of snow from Hurricane

If you feel you need a real treat after Zeta google Mrs.Claus.com or if you are on Facebook just search Mrs. Claus. Your followers might enjoy this site also. All of Atlanta’s leaves are on your patio. Will that be your job?

  16. Glad you are safe, I was nervous when I saw pictures of Georgia this morning I have a daughter that lives in Alpharetta she said they had limbs down but power was still on, hope you power is back on soon.

  17. Brenda s. Lawrence says

Sorry to hear this Susan, but also glad you are safe and sound. Praying there is no damage to your home, especially since you just had all the paint/cleaning done on the outside. Looks like a mess! Hope your electric is back soon!! Hugs, Brenda

  18. Oh, Susan, what a trooper you are! Going through a hurricane and STILL willing to put up TT!! Please take care and know that all your followers are behind you, and would understand if a post isn’t forthcoming! What else will 2020 bring our way?:!

  19. So sorry you are dealing with this. Here in SE VA we are under a severe wind advisory. SW winds with gusts to 50 mph. Losing power is the pits.

  20. Glad you weathered the storm, be safe!

  21. A nice welcome home. I’m glad you, your home and vehicle is ok.

  22. Linda Page Gurganus says

Sorry your power is out. We have no power for 4 days back in the spring when a bad storm and tornado came through. I hope you don’t have any damage.

  23. Oh my goodness dear Susan, look at those pics ! I’m so happy you are safe at home.
    Please take care.
    See you later today.
    Fabby

  24. Our deck looks just the same. Leaves, pine needles, and branches everywhere. I guess we were lucky. We didn’t lose power, although our lights kept flickering. We woke up at 4 am to hear the howling wind and something bumping into our house. We still don’t know what that was because we didn’t see anything when it got light outside. I thought cleaning up after tropical storms and hurricanes was a thing of the past when we moved here from SW Florida 7 years ago.

  25. Older family members have been on the road this week, moving from the Texas Hill Country to Marietta, GA to live with my sister-in-law’s daughter. I think they made it in early yesterday.
Stay safe and warm, Susan — thoughts and prayers, Marlene

  26. sarah fallon galshack says

Hang in there Susan! I’m in Gainesville Ga. and our power just came on. Off since 5 this morning.
Many streets closed, what a mess!
Stay safe and I hope you’re next for power!

  27. I was without power too, Susan, but after about 12 hours it was restored. As to gas stoves, I can’t say enough in favor of them. I have cooked on both electric and gas and enjoy the fine adjustment a gas stove provides. If you shop these–a note: Now gas stoves have electric ignitors, I know as I just bought one. This means (in most of the stoves, I believe) that it takes electricity to ignite the eyes and oven. The eyes can be ignited on the stove I bought with a match/lighter and thus in an outage you can use the eyes for cooking, but NOT THE OVEN. I think it is a safety feature. There may be a gas stove out there that totally works during an outage, but I never found it after a lot of research. Your readers may be able to help. My ancient gas stove’s oven worked during loss of power, but not so on the new one. : (

  28. Anne Lovell says

I hope you have your electricity back on! Glad you’re safe in your home, keep staying safe there!

  29. Whole house Kohler generator is my advice!
    So glad we did.

  30. So sorry you are having to deal with hurricane effects. You could cook on your gas grill. We got a generator for when the power goes off. If you have gas heat, you should be able to get one to keep the rest of your house running.

  31. I think it’s time for you to look into a Generac. Being on your own it would be nice for you to have a backup generator for peace of mind.

  32. Hoping your power is restored soon.

  33. You have been experiencing a lot of storms in the South. Let’s hope Zeta is the last of them for this season. I think some food will actually last for a few days in the freezer if you keep the freezer closed. You can Google it when you get power. Hope it is not too cold there. Stay safe.

    Barb

  34. Carolyn P. Bailie says

Thought frozen good were ok for 24 hours if freezer door not opened… Good luck.

  35. We have a gas stove and a gas fireplace. It’s crossed my mind that we would at least have heat and some hot food, if needed in power outage. Haven’t been tested on that yet in 15 yrs. I vote you get the stove. And add the fireplace conversion too.

    • I do have a gas fireplace in the living room. I had to use it one year when we had an ice storm and didn’t have heat for like three days. I can only think of two to three times this has ever happened where the power was restored within a few hours and one was that ice storm. I prefer cooking on a gas stove . If I can get the same stove that I have now that has the double ovens in a gas stove, I would love that! Just don’t want to give up my double ovens. Someone mentioned that a lot of gas stoves have electric starters that you have to click to light it. I wonder if you can still light it not using that . I will need to go shopping and do some research.

  36. PS: are you using the battery backup on your Away luggage?

    • I haven’t traveled in so long, I’m not sure if the battery is still charged up but that’s a great idea. I hadn’t thought about the away battery! If this continues through the night and my laptop battery finally wears out, I will go get that thing out and see if it’s charged up. I also have one more laptop battery. Not sure if it’s charged up.

  37. Susan, maybe by now you have power again. I hope so. I know what it’s like to be without it because of living through a few hurricanes, mainly Carla and Celia in Texas. Just having to deal with your frozen food is a big chore. Thinking of you in Austin where some neighbors have been experiencing power outages because of high winds the last couple of days. Our power lines are underground and that helps us somewhat.

  38. Lin Celoni says

Oh Susan, I feel your pain. Just left Henderson NC mountain house after30+ hours. Was happy to have somewhere to go, but had to leave dirty dishes in the sink…….As for your gas stove – it won’t do you any good if you have electric starters. We will have to go back in a few days and empty the fridge.

  39. My nephew is in Kennesaw and they were still without power too. Maybe think about a generator instead of switching to gas, just a thought.

  40. so sorry Susan

  41. Sorry to hear of your ordeal Susan.
We live on a heritage Street with huge first growth timber evergreen trees so whenever we have wind storms there’s a good chance of the power going out and staying out for hours or sometimes days depending on how many tree limbs have to be removed.
Two christmas’s ago the power went out on Dec. 22 and was out until Dec. 26… Everything in our freezer was ruined, we couldn’t cook any of it because no power….. After that ordeal we decided to get a Generac installed and it was one of the best decisions we’ve ever made.
The next time the power went out our Generac sensed the outage and automatically turned itself on and powered the entire house like magic… The power was out for two days and neighbors were struggling but everything in our home just carried on as usual.
They’re a little pricey but once you have a Generac you never have to deal with power outages again. 🙂

  43. It’s always interesting to see what the weather is doing to those on the blog here. Same o same here in CA which is 80 weather and 40 at night. No rain in sight. Wow, doesn’t the wind whip up a mess? So glad you and house are ok. As long as crystals are still in frozen food it should be good and try not to open freezers at all when power is out. I have propane for heat and stove so at least I could cook (but need a match to light the burner). Wishing everyone well who has an over abundance of rain and wind!

  44. Beverly Anderson says

You might consider investing in a Standby Generator. Automatically kicks on when the power goes off.

  45. Glad you are home and safe. The power outage is such an inconvenience, hope yours is up soon. We have a small generator for such situations, just enough to power a fridge and a couple of small things. Many modern gas stoves have an electric starter and will not work when the power goes out so check that out before purchasing! Stay safe.

  46. I hope you have your power on soon.I live in Greenville SC and so many have lost theirs. I was lucky enough that mine never went out, but a lot of the surrounding neighborhoods did lose theirs and it’s still out.

  47. Hey Susan,
We were also without power for about 30 hours this time, has been up to 4 days with these type storms. We live in Sautee, GA (near Helen). Instead of a gas stove and those expenses & complications, this is our go to for coffee and cooking, very inexpensive. Bought years ago and still love it; we now also have a Honda eu2000 portable generator that keeps our two refrigerators going along with some lights. Unlimited plan on Verizon and hotspot on iPhone to use iPad kept the connections open.

All the best on power restoration, Frank

Living 30 miles from the coast in South Georgia, we’ve had numerous power outages from various storms. After being 6 days without power in August 2004 we purchased a generator and had it set up for our house. It sits in our garage that is not attached to our house and runs on gas. It will not run AC or stove, but lights, tv, fans, microwave etc….it has been a lifesaver. We are on a small grid so we are often one of the last to be reconnected. Worth every penny. We have friends not on city water that had whole house generators installed. Hope yours is back on by now…

  49. Brenda Smith says

Well, Zeta’s winds took out a lot of their bad temper on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, as is usual with hurricanes, however, they basically skipped over us here in the middle of the state. So sorry you have so much trouble (and so many leaves!) there..Wishing you well. Brenda

  50. do you still have your grill? you could cook on it and the refreeze the food or get some ice at the store and a cooler. maybe, just an idea. hang in there. rls

    • No, I gave it away about a year ago to a guy who sometimes does work at my home. I just never used it and some mice decided to build a nest in it one winter and I decided at that point I was just going to give it away since I was never using it.

  53. So glad you and your home are okay. So many states involved.
We will be here when you get around to us. Do not fret.

  54. Phyllis Trexler says

Have you ever considered a house generator? It is truly a great investment. We have one and it is a great comfort when the power goes out for an extended time.

  55. We need another update! Are you alright?

    • Thanks, Pam…I am. Unfortunately, after the power finally came back on last night, my computer isn’t working. Every single thing that was plugged into the surge protector is working fine, including the surge protector…except my computer will not turn on. The place that built the computer isn’t open until Monday due to the pandemic, so I’ll take it in on Monday. Having to reply right now on my laptop.

      • Aww, sorry to hear that. The whole thing must have affected the posts, because those newer posts weren’t there when I asked you for an update. Glad it’s back on, but I know what an ordeal that was for you. I hope you were able to keep from going stir crazy.

I did an update yesterday.

  56. So sorry to hear about your power…hope it comes back on soon. Before we moved we lived in an area that lost power frequently. We were one power company on one side of the street, and another company on the other. Sometimes we would be without power and the homes across the street would have the candles in the windows glowing and I would think…WHAT? We almost got a whole house generator ( with natural gas) before we moved to our downsized apartment. Luckily there are generators here and we have an outlet that will always have power. Your freezer ???!!! That was always my biggest worry. I think if you do not open the door it should stay frozen for a good while. I used to put an ice cube in a bag by itself in there and when we were away I would check that when we returned…if it was melted I knew that there was a power outage and the freezer had to be trashed. I feel for you…it is very annoying. Hope the power is back on SOON!
