Something’s Gotta Give

Recently, I took a little vacation to Savannah, Georgia. It was a wonderful trip and when I returned home that weekend, I couldn’t wait to pull out one of my favorite “beach house” movies, Something’s Gotta Give.  Do you remember this amazing living room from that movie house?

Something's Gotta Give Movie House,The Living Room

Come along and let’s take a tour of the whole house…it’s an amazing movie house!

Somethings Gotta Give is one of those movies you just have to watch at least once every summer. Joni, whose beautiful blog is Cote de Texas, believes the beach home in this movie to be the most beloved “movie” home ever. I might have to debate that one with her because I kind of think the house in Home Alone takes that honor. 😉 Okay, maybe they both qualify since the movies are from different time periods and the homes are so very different in style.

A while back, Linda, Megan and Joni of The Skirted Roundtable, interviewed Beth Rubino, the Set Decorator for Something’s Gotta Give. In The Skirted Roundtable interview, Beth Rubino says, “The house was the 4th main character in that film.” She is so right. The phones of designers were ringing off the hook for months and months after the release of Something’s Gotta Give. It seemed everyone on planet Earth wanted their home decorated to look exactly like this wonderful beach house.

Beach House in the Movie, Something's Gotta Give
We get our first look at the home when Harry Sanborn, played by Jack Nicholson, and Marin Barry, played by Amanda Peet, first pull up to the house with plans of a romantic weekend. Marin thinks her mom and successful playwright, Erica Barry, played by Diane Keaton, is away for a few days. Surprise! Erica walks in shortly after the pair arrive and the fun begins.

This beautiful home is actually located in Southampton, NY. But, I might as well break the news to you early on…in case you don’t know.

It turns out, only the exterior shown in the movie is of a real house. Unfortunately, all of those beautiful interiors we love are just set designs created on a stage at Sony Studios. Bummer. I know. I felt the same way when I found out the adorable English cottage in The Holiday wasn’t real either. Even the leaves on the trees are fake. Yep, it was May and the trees hadn’t leafed out yet in that area. Imagine having the job of gluing on all those leaves on that tree in the picture above!

But take heart because the interiors are still completely wonderful, inspiring and totally doable! Here’s a view of this Southampton home at night. Lovely!

One more of the exterior before we head inside. I think most everyone has seen this movie, but if you are one of few folks who has not:

The plot involves a confirmed bachelor, Harry, and he is dating the 20-something daughter, Marian, of well-known playwright, Erica Barry. The weird thing is Harry is the age of Marin’s mother, so you can imagine just how thrilled Erica is with the relationship. She and Harry don’t hit it off well at all but ironically, he ends up having to stay at her home for several days to convalesce from a near heart attack. They grow closer and well…you can guess the rest. Keanu Reeves plays a young doctor, Julian Mercer, and he falls hard for Erica whose work he has always deeply admired. Erica goes from zero men in her life to two! Complicated!

Now for our tour inside…this room has captured the heart of many. I think one of the reasons we all love it so much is because it feels like a real home. It has that “collected” look as if it has evolved over the years, instead of being “decorated.” The slipcovers also give it that beachy, casual feel, yet the whole room has an air of elegance, too. You could see yourself collapsing on one of these sofas after a long day with a bowl of popcorn and a good book or movie.

Of course, one of the highlights of this room, perhaps it’s most remembered element, is the striped blue and white dhurrie rug. The story behind this rug blew me away!

Rug in Living Room of the Beach House in the Movie, Something's Gotta Give

It turns out when the Set Decorator, Beth Rubino found this rug, it was just what she had pictured for this huge family room. Only one problem, the rug was gigantic…over 70 feet long! So, she had it cut (gasp) and pieced together to fit the room in the movie.

Take a look at this picture below. Weird looking isn’t it. Have you ever seen a rug where the stripes didn’t remotely match up. lol Now you know why! The only thing that bothered me about this was it was an antique rug. 🙁 I know it was just a dhurrie, but I don’t think I could have had an antique rug cut up. How about you? I guess a Set Decorator has to do whatever it takes to get the job done under deadline.

Something's Gotta Give Movie House,The Living Room

Of course, we don’t really notice these details while we are watching the movie. Those only came out later once the home became this HUGE sensation. If you’ve always coveted the look of this room and you would love your own blue and white striped dhurrie, there are lots to be found online. I Googled and found these five below at Cottage and Bungalow.

Here’s a collage showing all five. A collage isn’t the ideal way to share these; they looked a lot better online at Cottage and Bungalow. The one in the middle is a ticking design. I love all of these. They have striped rugs in every color imaginable, not just blue and white. (I’m not affiliated with Cottage and Bungalow…just sharing the good stuff when I find it.)

Rug in the movie, Something's Gotta Give

Another one of the “stars” of this room is the beautiful Swedish, Mora clock. Imagine for a moment this room without that clock. Just not the same, is it? Scroll back up a couple of pics for a bit better view of that wonderful clock. I would love a Mora…just love the shape!

A view of the room during a big storm that takes place during the movie.

It’s nighttime now and Erica and Harry have called a truce. In this scene in the family room, they are meeting halfway in route to the kitchen for a late night snack. Let the romance begin. Besides the family room, the other room designers were most requested to copy was the kitchen.

See those beautiful soapstone counters? Would you believe they are actually plywood? Yep, plywood painted to look like expensive soapstone. The magic of the movies.

Kitchen in the Beach House in the Movie, Something's Gotta Give

This kitchen is bright and cheerful, a place you just want to be. I love the glass-front cabinets in the kitchen. I redid my modest kitchen, and cut out the center of the cabinet doors and installed glass into the front of 6 cabinets in 2001. It was a DIY project and for once, I was ahead of the trend curve. That NEVER happens. lol I decorate for me anyway and not trends. Bet you do the same.

Kitchen in the Beach House in the Movie, Something's Gotta Give

Another section of this lovely kitchen. Hard to believe that isn’t real soapstone. Love the subway tile…so classic, crisp and clean.

Something's Gotta Give Movie and Kitchen

We get a little glimpse into the small sitting area off of the kitchen in this view.

Something's Gotta Give Movie and Kitchen

The third most talked about room in the movie, Something’s Gotta Give, is the dining room. During The Skirted Roundtable interview, Beth Rubino explains the source of the inspiration for the design of this room. It turns out a good friend of hers had a wall like this filled with a dish collection in her dining room. Beth loved the look so she duplicated it for the movie, filling it with a beautiful collection of ironstone.

Something's Gotta Give Dining Room

Designers were busy, busy, busy searching down this gorgeous fabric after Something’s Gotta Give was released. It’s called Bordeaux Toile and is made by Lee Jofa. It is wonderful, isn’t it?Can you ever, ever go wrong with toile?

I love all the contrasts in this movie…the light against the dark and the casual against the elegant. Is there such a term in decorating as casual elegance?   The house feels that way, dressy but casual.   The style of the furniture is truly elegant, along with the built-in china cabinets, but the slipcovers convey comfort with style.

Here’s a rarely seen view I snagged while watching the movie. I sure wish we had gotten to see more of that porch in the movie…but alas, it is just a set. I guess that means we get to fill in all the details with our imagination. Sometimes that’s even better.

Tour the Beach House in the Movie, Something's Gotta Give

Erica’s bedroom is as soothing and comfortable as the rest of her home. My favorite area of this room has to be the huge bay overlooking the ocean. Honestly, would you ever get any work done sitting in this lovely spot? I’d find myself daydreaming all day.

Tour the Beach House in the Movie, Something's Gotta Give

At night it feels a tad creepy, doesn’t it. I’d have to close those draperies, no matter how secluded it might be. This atmosphere/theme of “neutral” runs throughout this movie. Erica’s home is all creams and beiges, her clothing is all whites, tans, khakis, and she only collects the white rocks on the beach until Harry enters her life. It’s a subconscious thing, something she isn’t really fully aware of, or at least that’s the impression I got. It’s as if she’s living a “vanilla” life that’s “safe” until Harry and Julian spice things up. As the movie progresses, Erica sheds the long sleeve, white turtlenecks and awakens within. Her life opens up and at times, it’s painful.

Tour the Beach House in the Movie, Something's Gotta Give

We get a view of Command Central in this shot. This is where Erica writes. This would make me a little “quaaa-zee.” I would need at least a few inches of desk surface showing. How about you…could you work at this desk? Love the built-in bookshelves. You can never have too many bookshelves. Never.

Tour the Beach House in the Movie, Something's Gotta Give

Harry gets bored and comes by her room for a chit-chat. I love the accent table with the decorative apron. It adds a bit of whimsy to this room.

Tour the Beach House in the Movie, Something's Gotta Give

I love how Beth styled the mantel with the large painting/pictures just leaning against the wall. It would feel so “fixed” and stale if they were actually hung perfectly on the wall.

Tour the Beach House in the Movie, Something's Gotta Give

We get a few glimpses of the “guest” room where Harry has been staying. In this scene, he is packing and preparing to leave now that he’s doing better. I love the paneled walls in this room.

Oh, I adore this house! I could watch Something's Gotta Give over and over just for the set decoration and the music. I'm the same about The Holiday and It's Complicated — incidentally, all 3 are Nancy Meyers films.

  2. Kathysue says

Susan I loved this movie the first, second and third time I watched it. I fell in love with the house the very first time I saw it. I could move right in, the only thing I would change is I might have to straighten up the pillows a a bit. I have a new green and white striped dhurrie that i love love love. Hopefull a new blue ticking sofa will follow close behind. It was so fun to read this post!!! Enjoy the movie, AGAIN!! Kathysue

  3. One of my favorite movies, and probably my favorite movie house. I like the house in Nights in Rodanthe, too.

  4. Just loved this post! I have watched that movie several times just to see the rooms of this house…it is wonderful! Thank you so much for giving me such a good time tonight!
    Have a terrific weekend! 🙂

    Fab house – COVET!
In the dining room scene, that is not a raised platform – it's a track going around the table that the camera runs on so that it can go around the table. I know because they once made a movie right outside my office door and had these type of tracks laid down the hallway. I nearly got run over once when I came out unexpectedly in the middle of a shoot!

  6. I love this and Home Alone's… but my heart belongs to Practical Magic… and coming down the pass is the house in It's Complicated. Loved the tour. I need to watch this again!

  7. Love this movie and that house is gorgeous, even if not "real".

Regarding "movie magic" I worked at a hospital in Chicago that was used in "While You Were Sleeping" and an outside scene was supposed to be in winter; it was actually fall so they had to pull all of the leaves off the bushes…the opposite of having to put them ON the trees!!!

  8. Kathleen says

I live in Southampton, and that is a very common style for a house, esp down by the ocean, or as they call it, The Estates section. Many huge beautiful homes, with beautiful views of the ocean.
They film the show Royal Pains i our town, and my friends kitchen was used for a movie called Legally Blond several years ago. They pay big bucks t use your house. Funny, I haven't had any offers, LOL!

  9. Susan (Between Naps on the Porch) says

Tess that is wild! I can't imagine! lol

  10. Susan (Between Naps on the Porch) says

Thanks Anonymous for clearing that up…I was so wondering what that was!

  11. lauren @ West Furniture Revival says

thats so funny because a friend of mine was just telling me about this house that she remembered from the movie and how much she loved the decor. i didnt remember it so thank you for the post.
    its beautiful.

I have always, always thought about this house ever since I saw the movie! I adore it! Dreamy!
    Great post!

  13. Fun post, Susan. This is one of my favorite movies. As for this house, I could move in immediately. I didn't know it wasn't actually used to film the movie, but that's the magic of Hollywood. Thanks for sharing this post and reminding me how much I enjoy this one! ~ Sarah

  14. The French Tangerine says

I'm going to savannah next week! I've never seen this movie and will plan to watch while there…. I'm helping a girlfriend move….
Beautiful house. I had forgotten about this movie- thanks for the reminder!

  15. Phil and Darby Hawley says

Oh my gosh I just love this house; and I love Diane's haircut!

  16. Once a summer! NO WAY! I love this movie so much for all the above and more! My kids bought me the movie 3 times over! I didn't know all this about my beloved movie, second only to the Jazz Singer w/ Neil Diamond…What a great post!!!
Thank you for sharing!!!! I really enjoyed it!

  17. Crystal @ Ordinary Days says

That really is just a DREAMY house (even if it's not really a house). 🙂

    Crystal

  18. I love homes with white walls and furnishings. People will say that all white or cream is boring, but I disagree. I think the layers of whites and creams is very serene and calming, yet fresh. Any you see white rooms in magazines all the time. This house was definitely a winner.

  19. DittoDecorating says

I too, share your love for these movies and their homes! Great post!

  20. sweet violets says

Oh, those are beautiful homes, even if they are a set!!! My favorite house is from "The Big Chill" starring Glen Close, William Hurt, etc., and I know that one was a real home……the second favorite is from "Practical Magic", the kitchen and solariam….and that staircase!!!
And how about the house in "Midnight in the Garden of Evil"???? Great inspiration for sure…..hugs…cleo

  21. sweet violets says

Sorry, that's…."Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil"….where was my mind……

  22. Yvonne @ StoneGable says

Susan, I love this movie! During the crying scene I was laughing so hard I was crying! I agree, I do need to see this movie at least once a year… more like 3 or 4!
And that house! I been dreaming of it for years!
That house and the "Father Of The Bride" house!

    Great post!
BTW, I just found out I won the Coty earring giveaway at BNOTP! I had a little detour to the hospital for a few days last month and missed the announcement post! Thanks so much! I am thrilled!
    xo Yvonne

  23. Susan (Between Naps on the Porch) says

Cleo, I actually just posted about Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil a few weeks ago after my trip to Savannah. Mercer house is a beautiful home, isn't it? Click HERE to view that post and tour Mercer House. 🙂

  24. Eileen @ Cottage Beach House says

Oh I love that movie and that house. The fact that she collects all the white stones on the beach just cracks me up, because I collect all the grey ones! My other favorite movie house is the one in "Practical Magic" I especially love the kitchen n that house.
Thank you for this most interesting post.

  25. Loved this movie! Keaton is one of my favorite actresses too.
I have really enjoyed your posts about movie houses. My favorite house, besides this one, is from The Holiday. What I'd give to have a little get-a-way like that!

  26. Melanie @ Country Cottage Living says

Susan, I love this movie; going to have to put it on my To-Do List for the Summer! I just found your blog and I LOVE it! There is something pretty wonderful about that house in that movie…

  27. Agree with so much of what you say here, although the "writer's bedroom" was I think, my favorite room. Great cast, funny movie. Always loved the house in Home Alone also – it just seemed like the kind of place where a happy family lived. The English cottage in The Holiday was one of my all time movie faves, I liked the house in Hollywood too. Back to the beach house, the exterior is as yummy as the interior rooms, such an east coast look that I often sigh over while leafing through the pages of Cape Cod Life. Gotta have the requisite hydrangeas also!

  28. College Papers says

What a wonderful house ! i have never seen this movie but i am making a plan next sunday to watch it…

  29. Frog Hollow Farm Girl says

Hello from Frog Hollow Farm. Isn't it funny that my favorite movies houses are the same as yours – the Home Alone house was decorated so beautifully for Christmas, and that attic bedroom area was so cool. The house in The Holiday was so cozy and cute – and this house from the movie Something's Gotta Give is just lovely and certainly the perfect beach house. Thanks for giving us such a great view of the different rooms and structural aspects – I might try to tuck in a little library corner just like the one in your post! Ciao, bella! xxoo

  30. I love this house! wouldnt you just be in heaven there! 🙂 thanks for sharing

  31. Andi's English Attic says

This film did something to me. Not only did I love the film, the house actually took my breath away. Thank you for putting these pics up. I've saved them to a special folder so I can oogle them when I feel down about my own decorating. It has my vote as the most beautiful film home. xx

  32. Janet Brown says

About the lamps in the living room. The floor lamp by the sofa in front of the clock has a cord that trails across the floor to the wall where the clock is. Not a good idea. All the table lamps are lighted, but the floors are covered by the rug and no outlets can be seen. Where are the table lamps plugged in?

  33. Heidiopia says

Oh, now I want to go watch this movie again… thanks for the up close and the low down, Susan!
    Heidi @ Show Some Decor

PS- the house in It's Complicated is pretty fab, too!

  34. Anonymous says

I too am from Eastern Long Island and that style home is very popular inside and out and has been for many many years prior to the latest decorating trends. I call it cottage style and in this case a more sophisticated version. But, pretty much the idea is a more bright, relaxed and soothing atmosphere. Love it!! I also agree with Gayla. I love the house in Practical Magic too.

  35. Beautiful beach home…but I agree with you about the Home Alone house. That's my favorite. NOT the way it looks now, but the way it looked in the movie. All that red and green and just a cozy look to it with the surrounding snow.

  36. …me again! Forgot to add that my other favorite house is in the old Barbara Stanwyk movie "Christmas in Connecticut". Even though it is black and white, it's such a beautiful home! That movie, plus, Home Alone is a must see for my family during the holidays.

  37. Their Mommy His Wife says

What's so great about this "house" is that it can be transformed into fitting in any part of the country. Swap out what few beachy things there are and replace it with something a little more rustic-like and you can have a beautiful farmhouse. I keep showing the kitchen pics to my hubby to help him understand what I'm coveting, lol.
    Great inspirations!

  38. Robynne's Nest says

Thank you for this post…it was great fun to look at those photos of (you're right) one of the most loved house sets…it's funny I've been thinking a lot about that movie recently and I may just pop it on during the weekend. Robx

  39. Beachside Cottage says

Yes, this is def one of my favorite movie houses –

The other one I can think of off the top of my head is the Maine house in the Michelle Pfeiffer/Harrison Ford movie (eeek – can't think of the name of it, but I'm pretty sure you featured it in your movie houses blog)

Thanks for posting and sharing such great info–

    Your posts are always GREAT!

    Happy Weekend –

    Linda

  40. I was most attracted to the art work on the walls (of course) It Is Spectacular in my eyes
    KAT

  41. Wow so pretty. I love all of those windows. If I ever get the chance to remodel I want windows like that.

My favorite movie house of all time is still hands down the house from Practical Magic… sooo beautiful. I loved every aspect of it including the gardens.

  42. I too love both those houses but don't forget the house in the movie, Stepmom, I love her porch!

  43. Sizzle and Zoom says

I own this movie and I watch it all the time. I'm enthralled with the home and how it is decorated. I watch it cause it's amazing eye-candy. Thanks for spotlighting it and all the details.

  44. Susan, you do such a great job picking out beautiful shots. This is a gorgeous movie house. My all time favorite is the Practical Magic house, it's to die for, but also sadly does not exist.

  45. Anita @ Cedar Hill Ranch says

My favorite was the dining room.

  46. Miss Jean says

I'm going to go watch the movie again! I love the house – the kitchen – Keanu Reeves!!!

  47. Anonymous says

Love this house, but here's my pet peeve about this living room and many magazine shots of beautiful rooms….where are the electrical cords for the lamps? I can see the only for the floor lamp, but where are all the table lamp cords? OK, I know it's set and they probably just drilled a hole in the floor LOL! Am I the only one who examines photos in mags trying to find the cords?

  48. Susan (Between Naps on the Porch) says

Anonymous, that's a good point. Someone else mentioned that in the comments, too. I'll have to dig out some old pics of my first house. We had our furniture in the center of the room and since we had a big crawl space under the house, we had an outlet installed in the floor. It was under the table where the lamp sat, as I recall. I'll see if I can find those pics and do a little post about what to do when the furniture is in the center of the room.

  49. Me too! Oh, me too! My first 'house love' showed up when I about 10 and after I'd seen White Christmas about a million times already. I love Inn, with the fire pit, the windows that wrapped around! I still look for places like that.

  50. I would kill for a house like this!! It is one of my favourite movie houses – the other is Home Alone. Just such beautiful houses.
    Suzyq

  51. Susan, to refresh my memory, I have ordered the movie from the library. Now I will be really noticing everything in the house!! 🙂

  52. Ann Haller says

Love the house, love the movie!!! If you happen to have a copy of the earlier DVD, Amanda Peet did some commentary on the house in the Extras Section of the DVD. Another treat is to watch the movie with the Director's Comments. It is the perfect "woman's house."
The Washington Post home section did an article several years ago on the kitchen. It was the most requested design for kitchen remodelers.
P.S. My hydrangeas peek above my windows like in her bedroom.

  53. I. LOVE. THIS. HOUSE!! I'm getting ready to redo our colors, and this will definitely be a source of inspiration!

  54. Cass @ That Old House says

I am always delighted to visit you and remind myself that there are others in this world who watch movies or TV series for the interiors.

One of my favorite movies without doubt. Have always LOVED the house in it too. I tend to be drawn into movies with beautiful houses or settings and enjoy them a lot more. I also notice each and every detail of the setting as I watch a movie. It's funny because I'll ask a friend or a relative if they noticed the mantel or plate and they'll say something like, "Huh?"

  62. Terry @ La Bella Vie says

Well this is one of my all time favorite movies (see my profile intro) I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS HOUSE!!!

This house has definitely gotta be one of my favs, Susan! Like you said, love the light against the dark; the soft against the rustic. And all of the spaciousness! My 2nd fav house is the one in Message in a Bottle. 🙂

  64. Gorgeous house!! I love the bookshelves and reading nook, as well as that bay window in her bedroom. Of course the view outside makes it, LOL. My other favorite movie house is Gull Cottage, the Captain's home in The Ghost and Mrs. Muir. That staircase, the chintz-covered chairs in the living room, and the bedroom balcony windows with the telescope looking out to sea… dream on!!!

  65. Gorgeous house! I love the book nook and the big bay window in the bedroom. Of course having a view helps, LOL. My other favorite movie house is Gull Cottage, the sea captain's home in The Ghost and Mrs Muir. Carolyn, I've never see that movie…it sounds like a great one! I will have to see it now!

  67. I just discovered your blog, was reading along and ahhhh, this post is wonderful!!! Something's Gotta Give is one of my favorite movies and this is the best blog about the house I have ever read!!
I am going to go back and reread, check out the sites you recommended and then come back and read more of your posts!!

  68. Susan (Between Naps on the Porch) says

Cheryl, thanks so much! So glad you are here reading! Great to meet you!

It is SO nice to see that I am not alone in my obsession with this movie, the house, the characters, etc. Every time I see something that would fit in this house we say, "Oh that's SO Erica Barry!" I am working on my dining room and living room and adding little SGG touches as an homage to this absolutely enthralling movie. My two favorite movie houses: This one and and Bing Crosby's in HOLIDAY INN. Thanks for the post and the great read! I have driven past the Home Alone house which is just North of me here in the Chicago area. It was even up for sale earlier this year – not sure if it sold yet – totally gorgeous home as well!

  70. I do love this “house” but Home Alone is still my favorite. I think HA was the first movie where I actually noticed the house. As my husband says, iIt’s amazing what you can do when money is no object…lol.

  71. I looked all over for the Rockaway Beach painting and others from this house and finally found someone who would do them. Canvas replicas. http://www.canvasreplicas.com If you are looking for the art from the beach house they will do it. Great beach house, great movie!

  72. Just came across this gorgeous post about the wonderful house in Something’s Gotta Give! I love this house – do you think the set designers would do a little moonlighting??

  73. Just saw this post! I could watch this movie again and again just to see the set design. Enjoyed seeing this post and am inspired by this light-and-elegant-but-lived-in look. : )

I am new to this blog world. I still have to research exactly what it is and how to create one. That being said,I love your site and am humbled by your presence. How could I have been missing this for four years?

  75. my favorite house—EVER!!!!!

  76. Did you find the brand and paint color names and numbers used throughout the home? I’m especially interested in the tan/yellow in the guest bedroom and dining area. Well, I loved them all!

    • Lorrie, I haven’t seen that but I wonder if it’s online. That interior was sooo studied and loved, I wouldn’t be surprised if it wasn’t mentioned in an article somewhere.

  77. The home is so Southampton! Lovely. Is there anyway to know the dining room wall color? Love it!

    • Liz, I’m not sure. You may want to google “what paint colors were used in Something’s Gotta Give” and see if someone has written anything about that. Would be interesting to find out.

  78. And here I always thought I was the only person to ever get obsessed with movie houses! Something’s Gotta Give is my hands down all time favorite, closely followed by Father of the Bride. I’ve also always loved the Home Alone house in all its 90’s glory–not sure why but just the colors of that house make me want to get under a blanket and sip cocoa!

Susan…got a kick out of the movie house blog. I love all of the same ones…especially The Mercer House in Savannah. May I share a little story about Clint Eastwood and my hubby and me. We lived in Vidalia and loved going to Savannah to eat (put my feet under Paula Deen’s table long before she was PAULA and she was really doing the cooking) When Clint was making “Midnight” it was THE thing to go and watch the shooting – it was a huge deal in Savannah. So we set off with our little Maltese, Lamb, and was prepared to enjoy ourselves and eat with Paula. They were shooting the scene for the bridal shower at the Mercer House, with all the girls decked out in their 50s style dressy dresses, hats, white gloves..the whole deal. They were all lined up to go in the front door of the Mercer House; but had to wait for something technical to be done and they spotted Lamb, hanging out the window for fresh air. Well, they were supposed to stay in line but had grown weary and they all gathered around our car to see the little white dog. The police had stopped a line of cars, including us, to stay out of the scene, so we were not doing anything illegal or improper, but the girls were just keeping from being bored as they waited. We talked with them awhile and a gentleman came up and pointed across the street. There, patient as the day is long, stood Clint Eastwood with that grin on his face that he uses to let people know he isn’t really Dirty Harry, kinda friendly but could change in a flash. He said in that quiet voice that carries for a LONG way, “Ladies, if you are through visiting with the little dog, we’ll get on with the movie”. Thankfully, he actually laughed and I waved to him and he grinned and waved back. I nearly died!!!! Each time I see the movie I remember the sight of Clint Eastwood, in a beige cashmere sports shirt, thin as a rail but looking like a million dollars, waving across the street in Savannah to me. Good memory. I’ve passed the Mercer House many times, but it was never so gorgeous as on that day when Clint was there. Thought you might enjoy the little flashback of a happy time.

    • Carol, what an awesome story! I love it! I remember that scene in the movies with the ladies in their hats and pretty dresses. Not everyone can say Clint Eastwood has waved to them OR that they held up the shooting of one of his movies. 😉 Hee, hee. I wish I had lived closer during that time, would love to have seen it being filmed. I did go on the Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil tour not long after the movie came out. It was so much fun! That movie put Savannah on the map. Can you believe, all the times I’ve been to Savannah and I’ve never eaten in her restaurant. Thanks for sharing that fun story!

  80. those mora clocks are classic – its amazing how much more they ve become popular since the movie. We have about 60 antique mora clocks in stock if you are looking for one and we ship worldwide with lots of happy US customers.

  81. Striped carpeting can be a very difficult canvas to decorate a room from. This was done very well, and the different size stripes really work well in this setting. Excellent home to showcase!

  82. I love the art work in this house, it all appears to maybe be the same artist, any idea who they are?

  83. I know this is an older article, but I just had to comment. The house in this movie was beautiful…but the interior shots weren’t actually the house used in the exterior shots. The interior was a sound stage set….oddly enough. Also, I think that as lovely as this home and set was, it had nothing on the home and set used in “Stepmom” with Julia Roberts, Ed Harris and Susan Sarandon. Another favorite home movie set of mine was the stunning set used in the movie “What Lies Beneath” with Michelle Pfeiffer and Harrison Ford. Those two (Stepmom and What Lies Beneath) are a toss up for me if I had to choose between them. I loved the serene, Vermont, home on the lake feel of the latter, but as a New Yorker, I think I may be a little more partial to the one in Stepmom.

    • Hi Angelina, Yep, you are so right! Houses unfortunately just aren’t big enough normally for them to film inside so they are usually shot on a sound stage. I just recently posted a tour of the home in the movie, Stepmom. That was and is a beautiful home! You’ll find that tour here: https://betweennapsontheporch.net/house-in-stepmom-movie-is-real-take-the-tour/
I haven’t seen What Lies Beneath but that’s a movie I’ve had request to post about. I need to get a copy of it and watch…probably with the sound off since I’m a big chicken! 🙂

      • Susan, you are right, if you are chicken, turn the sound off. As much as surroundings do to make a movie what it is, so does the music. If they took out the music of most scary movies, they would be only half as scary.
What Lies Beneath has a particular scene that will make you practically jump off your chair, so watch out! Great movie. But how could it fail with Harrison Ford and Michele Pfeiffer?
I have seen As Good As It Gets probably a hundred times. I had a similar experience of an awakening late in life of feelings I didn’t know existed and I felt as if someone had a hidden camera in my home. The scene where she just keeps crying at random times was me. That heart wrenching cry for love I had never experienced. Every time I watch the movie it takes me back to that time, but in a good way. I just need the ending, that’s all. I loved the house too, and I am sure if you could afford that house, you would have help to keep it clean (that’s what I think about when I see these homes : ) )

        • Jackie, what happens right before the scary scene…please share so I can skip it! 🙂 I don’t like scary movies one bit.
I know, wouldn’t it be nice if life always had a happy ending like it so often does in the movies.

          • “What Lies Beneath” really isn’t all that bad. I promise. There are a couple of “jumpy” scenes, but it’s very, very well done. Tactful, no cheap gimmicks like you would see in a horror movie. (No gore either.) I would fill you in on which scenes may startle you a little, but then you’d miss some important points in the movie. Watch it with a good friend or someone you love if you must, but you won’t regret it. It’s worth it just for the sets! It’s a must see considering the content of your blog! It’s too bad you don’t like thrillers, another couple of great movie homes are the interiors of “A Perfect Murder” (with Michael Douglas and Gwyneth Paltrow) and “Don’t Say a Word” which is another great Michael Douglas thriller. Both of those are set in upscale New York City apartments though instead of houses, but they’re both beautiful interiors as well. You’re missing some spectacular movies in the “Thriller” genre! 🙂

      • Oh Susan…you’ve GOTTA see “What Lies Beneath!” You can watch it for free on the “Putlocker” website. I would provide the link, but I don’t know what your rules are for that. If you just google the movie title and “Putlocker” it will pull the link up for you. I guarantee that you’ll promptly be inspired to write an article about it. The whole movie has that really relaxed, “quaint” feel to it. It’s got great atmosphere without being “too scary” to watch if you aren’t a big fan of thrillers. You’ll love it! I did some research on that set after seeing the movie for the first time and as it turns out, the house was non-existent prior to the movie…they built the set exclusively for the movie. Which is hard to believe when you see it…it’s amazing. The interior, the exterior, the property, garden…all of it. Even the little town featured in the movie as well as some other places in the set…just beautiful! Please email me a link if you watch it and decide to write about it. I’d love to read it. I love your site!

        • Thanks, Angelina! I’ve never heard of Putlocker but I’m going to google and see if I can watch the movie. I like some thrillers, I love The Game with Michael Douglas. I just don’t like things that are gory with folks being killed all the time or too psychology disturbing…or too depressing. I’ll see if I’m brave enough for this one…I def want to see the house!

          • Sure thing! You can watch virtually any movie you can think of on that site…you just may want to be sure to have your pop-up blocker on. The movies are actually hosted on cloud servers outside of the US (which is how they stay out of legal trouble) and sometimes when you click to play the movie and your pop-up blocker isn’t on, an sponsor’s advertisement will pop up in a new window….it’s a minor annoyance that keeps the movies free to access, but it’s very avoidable so you don’t have to deal with it at all.

I use my computer to run my business (high-end vintage clothing), so I’ve got good anti-virus and anti-malware and I although the pop-ups can be irritating, I haven’t had any issues with viruses or malware. If one does pop up, use your task manager to close the window. If you accidentally click on the pop-up, it may take you to an external site that could have malware or viruses. I use Firefox and I have the “Adblock Plus” enabled, so I don’t even have to deal with the pop-ups. If you have Firefox, I’d recommend using that add-on…it’s a free tool and it will help protect your system.

Getting back to the movie thing…I love Thrillers (particularly psychological thrillers & mysteries) but I’m not a fan of the gory horror genre. The movies I suggested aren’t of that ilk. I think you’d enjoy them…at least I hope you would! Particularly if you enjoy a good mystery or a more “intellectual” style plot. They’re all good. And like I said, if you do end up writing about any of them, I would love to read it! Take Care, Susan!

  84. Love, love , love this decor! Here is the article The Washington Post ran a few years ago about how designers are asked to recreate the look all the time – even years later. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/02/21/AR2007022100469.html Titled “They Gotta Have It!

  85. Susan, I am in love with the creamy wall colour in the dining room! I googled it to try and find out which colour they used but it was custom. If you had to hazard a guess, what colour would it be in either Benjamin Moore, Sherwin Williams or Behr? I’m painting my living/dining room this weekend and would love to use it.

    • Gosh, I wish I knew Florence. You know who might know…visit Joni’s blog, Cote De Texas and leave her a comment. She may have a contact email on her blog, too. She’s a designer and she loved the set on Something’s Gotta Give…I think she even blogged about it. So she may be able to tell you. Here’s her blog address: http://cotedetexas.blogspot.com/

  86. I love this movie, and so as the house, I can’t believe my luck when I found your site. The details of the house is so comforting, warm, classy and homey, I love the over looking the ocean view specially if you are working, every woman will love that spot. The kitchen is so flawless and looks so neat, the dining room too looks intimate. Thank you for sharing

  87. Love this house but one of my favorite movie houses is the one in What Lies Beneath. Do you have any info about it?

  88. Thank you and I agree. What Lies Beneath was very scary. Not sure what was the scariest–the ghost or Harrison Ford playing an insecure mean person. But loved the house so I have watched it several times. Love BNOTP and look forward to it everyday.

  89. Nancy Meyers, who directed “Something’s Gotta Give” and insists on beautiful sets, has a new movie coming out in September 2015 “The Intern” with Robert DeNiro and Anne Hathaway. http://www.theinternmovie.com

  90. Such a pretty home/ movie stage. I think above all my favorite movie house is still You’ve Got Mail. I so love her little home.

  91. Absolutely loved the “movie house tours” post. My three favorite movies….and you are right, Somethings Gotta Give has to be watched at least once each summer, and Home Alone has to be watched around Thanksgiving.
Thank you for this awesome post. Jill

    • Jill, it’s so true! Love those! And as silly as it is, I love to watch Christmas Vacation with my son each year. The house is pretty cute too, well until the Christmas tree crashes out through the window and the dog chases the squirrel all throughout the house! lol

If you are familiar with Zillow check out 1338 Minuet St. Henderson, Nv. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!! It was designed after the Something’s Gotta Give house and they nailed it. I’m glad we got to see it, although a bit smaller than what we were looking for. It really is a beautiful home!

  93. Hailey Cadorette says

Do you perchance know the brand of bedding(sheet’s on Erika’s bed) in the movie.
I would love to have a set❣❣❣❣❣ Looked so soft and comfy….

  94. Mayra G. Sota says

Hello! I really loved your blog, this movie is my favorite, especially for this wonderful house. I only have one question, in the behind the scenes of the film, in the extra material, there is an interview with Amanda Peet and there she says that she was fascinated with the house, so she had her towed to her property, you could verify if it is really true this or if it really is a set? Thanks greetings!

  95. I love this movie, and I love your movie house tour Susan! What a brilliant idea. I’ll have to check them all out. Weirdly, one of my favorite movie house transformations is Back to the Future – talk about decorating as a metaphor! 🙂 Thanks as always for a beautiful, interesting break in my day!

  96. I was lucky that I found your site. I love this movie, and so as the house, I can’t believe it. Thanks for sharing that fun story!
