The Big Wedding: A Peek Inside This Beautiful Lake House

Update: The post below was created in April 2012 prior to the release of the movie so it shows pictures from the trailer for The Big Wedding. You’ll find a much more detailed tour with lots more pictures in this more recent post: Tour the Beautiful Lake House in the Movie, The Big Wedding

Yesterday I was playing around on my iPad and I found an app I had downloaded so long ago I had completely forgotten about it.  Scary.  I worry about my memory sometimes. Anyway, the app is called Trailers and it’s kind of cool because it let’s you watch the trailer for pretty much any movie that’s out or will be coming out soon.

One trailer caught my interest, having just experienced a wedding in my family when my son married recently.  The movie is called The Big Wedding and it has a star-studded cast including Robert De Niro, Katherine Heigl, Diane Keaton, Susan Sarandon, Topher Grace, Amanda Seyfried, Ben Barnes, Christine Ebersole and Robin Williams.  I like romantic comedies so I watched the trailer and guess what?!

The Big Wedding

There’s a pretty awesome lake house in it!   It’s about time we had another movie out with a great house!  I love those!

Speculation online is the interior may have been designed by Beth Rubino, the same set designer for the beach house in the movie, Something’s Gotta Give.  I don’t think that’s been confirmed, though.  As you look at the pictures in this post, see if you think it’s the same set designer.

The home almost looks like it’s constructed of brick in this photo below, but it’s actually cedar shake siding.  You’ll see a close-up in just a sec.

I wonder if  the house in The Big Wedding is another one of those movie homes that’s just been built for the movie (like The Holiday and Practical Magic) or if it’s a real home.  I also wonder if it is real, if all the scenes take place inside the home or if some are filmed on a set.  That’s normally the case, even when a real home is used in the filming.  Guess we’ll know soon because The Big Wedding is set to be released on October 26th.

Update:  The release date for the movie, The Big Wedding has been pushed out to April 26, 2013.  And the movie was filmed in a real home in Greenwich, Connecticut. Take the full tour of the home in this more recent post: The Big Wedding: Tour The Beautiful Lake House Featured in the Movie

The House and The Plot:

In the movie, The Big Wedding, Ellie Griffin (Diane Keaton) is the ex-wife of Don Griffin (Robert De Niro).  Their adopted son, Alejandro Griffin (Ben Barnes) is about to marry Missy O’Connor (Amanda Seyfried).   De Niro is living with Bebe McBride (Susan Sarandon) who also happens to be Ellie’s former best friend.  You can just imagine why she’s her “former” best friend.  No explanation needed there.  The wedding is set to take place at De Niro’s lake home and everyone is gathering there for the weekend.

The main plot centers around a complicated scheme to make Alejandro’s birth mother (Patricia Rae) believe  Ellie and Don are still married, since divorce is totally forbidden in her religion.  There are lots of entertaining moments as you might imagine, since Bebe is not at all happy about this whole charade.

Okay, enough about the movie, let’s check out the house!

You wouldn’t expect to see that much of a house in a short 2 1/2 minute trailer, right?  I was actually pretty surprised how much was in there.  Update: This picture is from Elle Decor)

Home in the Big Wedding

In this scene, Ellie (the ex-wife) is arriving at the lake house for the weekend.  We get a small glimpse of the kitchen.  Notice the pugs on the counter.  They are a definite foreshadowing of the interior yet to come!  You can’t see them in this photo, but there are real pugs barking away as she arrives.

The Kitchen in the Movie, The Big Wedding

I adore a refrigerator that’s completely hidden.   Do you see it there on the right?  Love the dark wood counters with the white cabinets.

The Kitchen in the Movie, The Big Wedding

Ellie walks in on Bebe and Don in a rather compromising situation in the kitchen, thus the expression on her face.   How do you like the aqua color for the back of the cabinets in this area of the keeping/family room?   Makes me want to go paint something blue!

Note…more pug figures/statues.

The living room is bright and light filled with lots of great windows.

Love all the wainscoting/paneling throughout the home.

Here’s another view of the kitchen in this scene with Bebe and Don.  That looks like a small Butler’s Pantry in the background.  You can see the wine cooler.

The Kitchen in the Movie, The Big Wedding

I see a pot filler over the stove.  If I were building a home today, I’d definitely want one of those.  The dark wood counters are so pretty contrasting against the white cabinetry.  I’ve always thought I wanted marble counters but this kitchen may change my mind.

The Kitchen in the Movie, The Big Wedding

Not sure if this is a Keeping Room off of the kitchen or if it’s a full-fledged family room in the movie.  Doesn’t the rock fireplace look fake in this scene?  What do you think, real or fake?  I see more pug figurines!

The Family Room in the Movie, The Big Wedding

This is a glimpse of the entry as Ellie heads up a staircase.   Note all the great wainscoting/paneling.  Love the paint colors…really pretty.  The doorway behind Ellie’s head leads back into the kitchen.

The Kitchen in the Movie, The Big Wedding

The scenes where they are dining outside are beautiful!

Can you identify the dishware they are using?   The yellow rimmed bowl reminds me very much of a Villeroy & Boch pattern.  And the other bowl to the left of the yellow bowl looks like the Villeroy & Boch “Basket” pattern.  I have no idea about the blue and white dishware.  Anyone recognize these?  Whatever they are, you can count on there being a mad rush to buy them once the movie comes out!  Update:  Linda emailed to say the blue and white dishware is Vietri Blu Bianco.   Thanks, Linda!

We get a view of the exterior siding in this scene.  Ii looks like cedar shake.

Here’s a better view of the siding.  I guess this is the garage, or perhaps boat storage?  Or, maybe it’s the studio.  I’m pretty sure there’s an art studio in the home.

As the movie progresses we catch a few more scenes of the kitchen.  It has a big, beautiful island.  There’s also a big bay window for growing herbs for cooking.

The wainscoting runs throughout the kitchen, too.

The Kitchen in the Movie, The Big Wedding

Another shot into the Butler’s pantry.  They’ve done the reverse in that area.  Instead of white cabinets and wood counters, you have stained cabinets and white counters.   I like that…best of both worlds and not too match, matchy.

The Big Wedding Movie: Get a Sneak Peek of the Lake House

In this scene the tents are up in preparation for the wedding.   Isn’t it all beautiful?  That must be the deck where the dining scene we just saw took place.

The Big Wedding Movie: Get a Sneak Peek of the Lake House

Wonder if this movie will spawn a lot of lake weddings?   In addition to paper lanterns, there’s a gorgeous crystal chandelier there in the  center.    Very elegant for a tent!  Is that a screened-in porch off to the right side?  Can’t wait until the movie comes out and we get some better views.

The Wedding in the Movie, The Big Wedding

That’s all I was able to capture to share from the 2 1/2 minute trailer.  Does this peak your interest in seeing the movie?   It definitely has mine!  I can’t wait to see more of the house!  Oh, and the movie, too. 😉

  1. That kitchen looks like a place from which guests would never leave! I love when entertaining gravitates from the living room to the kitchen. Everyone always seems so comfortable in a kitchen. Must be something about food and wine being in close proximity!

  2. Michele from Finch Rest says

Looks like another winner, thanks, Susan – will be looking for it this fall!

I think my favvie part is the fact that so many lovely ladies are actually wearing HATS at their wedding…..love to see that anytime, anywhere!

    • Isn’t that the truth. I love that! I watched a old movie the other day…a black and white one and all the men had on hats in the street scenes. They looked so dashing. Made me wish that trend would come back.

  3. Catherine says

That house looks amazing! I haven’t heard of this film, but think I’ll have to check it out just for the house!
    Catherine x

  4. Good morning, Susan!
Shall I tell you a secret? I love so many movies just because of the houses where they were filmed…especially comedies…(I say only: “Home Alone” ) and this one seems to become one of my “absolutely must see” movie…lol (aside from the fact that I love Robert De Niro!)
The release date in Europe will be later than October, I’m afraid.
Susan, that house is amazing and the screened-in porch reminds me of … something and someone I already know… hmm… not sure… lol, but do they really have two giant egg beaters hanging in the butler’s pantry? Or what? lol Susan, I love the second picture so very much: They seem to live on a mirror! So beautiful! I’ve already enjoyed all the “movie house tours” you have ever posted! Thank you for that! I love them all!
    Hugs to you!
    Cecilia

    • Cecelia, you are too cute! I saw those hanging in there and thought they might be those old fashioned rug beaters. That would be a giant mixer for sure if they were egg beaters. 😉

  5. My husband will definitely not want to see this one with me, I can tell! If I tell him we’re going so I can look at the house and not because of the romantic storyline, he might just buy it! That house looks just gorgeous.

  6. Thank you for the tour through the house. I think I’ll have to get some friends and see this movie. Looks like a good evening with laughs. Such a beautiful home.

  7. I just featured this trailer on my facebook page the other day… its right up my ally and I love Topher ..my inner teenager there. I thought you should do a feature on it. Looks like it will be fun for sure. I always love these movie houses. Cheers Frances. oh I think the brick looks fake too. 🙂

  8. Susan,
Love the house and now I can’t wait for the movie. Glad something funny is finally coming out!

  9. I’ve gotta see the movie just so I can see the kitchen! I love wooden counters even though I’ve never had them. Just love the warmth of them.

  10. This was SUCH A TEASER!!! I can’t wait, now, to see this movie! Doesn’t it sound fun!?! We have a “lake cabin” and had our son’s wedding there (complete with tent, etc.) Such good memories! franki

  11. This movie looks like one that I do not want to miss. I am so glad that I am not the only one that
is peering past the characters and looking for the details in the settings! Diane Keaton is one
of my favorite actresses and this looks like a fun one!

  12. What a great kitchen! Love chick flicks with great houses!! Also, thanks for the tip on the Trailers app! 😉

  13. What a fun post!!! I am so excited now to see this film. I am going to borrow the idea for the herbs in the kitchen, simple I know but love it and I agree that the white counters with the wood cabinets is lovely…. oh, so much to look forward to!!! Thanks.

  14. What an interesting post! I loved your comments about the pictures! I wonder what you would do with the Home Alone house – I loved that house!!

  15. Great movie Susan! I’m getting it today to watch in the weekend. The house and sorrounding are gorgeous! Thanks for sharing. Enjoy your weekend.
    FABBY

  16. LOL that you totally picked apart the house and setting while ignoring the actors and movie in general. Toooo funny. I also love houses in movies and pay more attention to the home details than I do the movie usually. LOVED the home in Practical Magic, which led to me visit where it was filmed and then I made my family move there. True story – we now live on Whidbey Island. Anyway, also LOVE your blog!

    • lol That’s the way I do a movie house tour, Gwen. I usually just give a brief synopsis of the story and then get straight into the part I love, the HOUSE! 😉 That is an amazing story! Have you ever blogged about that? I’d love to hear the full story!

  17. Oh!.. forgot the best part!! I adore PUGS, we lost our beloved 13 yr. old Ben 2 years ago and we miss him so! I also have dog figurines, antiques, bronze, porcelain and new…many diverse dog races and of course, a couple of PUGS. I’m watching this movie ASAP!
    FABBY

  18. What a great post! I thought I was the only one who watched tv/movies and commented on the houses through out the whole thing – lol! It drives my husband nuts!!!
This one looks like both a great movie and a great house = perfect combination.

Have you seen the movie (don’t remember the name of it) that takes place up in Alaska? Has to do with a wedding too, but, who cares – the house was AMAZING !

    gena

  19. What a great idea for a post, and you are right–this lake home is gorgeous! I love the table out on the deck with the lake view, and the ample kitchen window with lots of room and light for plants–that is very cool. Thank you for sharing this with us, Susan!

  20. Oh Susan…this home is gorgeous….I think I can recite every word of “Something’s Gotta Give”…I also think I have come to know every nook and cranny, every accessory and painting in that house……Now how can I wait till Oct 26th to see that movie…uugghh!…..Thanks so much for presenting this gorgeous home….I am a “movie house” lover!!…Now what is it with Diane Keaton…in her contract, does she always require a gorgeous home in which to be filmed in?….well, if I were an actress, that would certainly be in my contract!!….Have a great weekend!!! 🙂

  21. I so hope this is a real house, that somebody lives in and loves!! It is just amazing, and what a view. I have a different idea of what my own ‘dream house’ would be—the cabin in “On Golden Pond”. As beautiful as this house is, I would rather have that little cabin!!

  22. Thanks for the heads-up, I am a movie addict, Diane Keaton fan, and lover of all things “decorating”! I,especially, have house love or envy as the case may be. Will be on the lookout for this one, for sure.

  23. What a cast….. I’ve got to see this movie.

  24. Only a dedicated blogger could find that much detail in the movie photos. We have a wedding coming June 29th with equally mixed families. Always an adventure.

  25. After this movie preview I know I will want to see the show, but may spend more time admiring the setting than the story!

  26. What a post!! All the pics are just fabulous!! You are so detail oriented and don’t miss a thing! I love a beautiful movie too…you bring it all to life! Thannk you!!

  27. Amazing house! Someone was paid to decide each detail of decoration in that house! The furniture, paint, Pugs, rug beaters, LOL. What a fun way to make a living….creating a fantasy world. A detail that jumped out at me concerning the cast….there are only eight cast member’s names at the top of the picture used to advertise the movie…and there are nine cast members featured in the picture. I had to research that to see who was left out…I believe that it’s Christine Ebersole on the far left. Susan, you always send me “googling”, LOL. The mugs on the table…glad they were identified. I searched for Vietri Blu Bianco, and the pattern is beautiful! Quite pricey, but now I will always have my eyes open at estate sales for this pattern. I do so love your blog, and there isn’t a post that hasn’t intrigued me in some way…giving me great enjoyment and educating me as well. Thank you so much! I’m afraid I’ve become a bit of a dishaholic because of it though…addicted to estate sales in my old age. I’ve been making tablescapes, but have no blog to display them in, so I share them with my Facebook friends. You influence me in so many ways. Finally found a garden seat of my own, LOL.

    • Oh, thanks for researching that. I was wondering who that was on the end. I’ll add her name to the cast. I love the blue and white china, too…so pretty! Estate sales are so much fun! You need to start a blog so you can participate in Tablescape Thursday! 🙂 It’s super easy to start one with Blogger! You could have one up and going in 10 minutes! Yay, glad you found a garden seat…they are great! Mine got some good use out on the porch last night when a friend was over visiting.

  28. Susan,
Sounds like a fabulous movie. Great cast and of course we all want to see that house. Thanks for the preview.
    xo Ginger

  29. Susan, the scenario I had, was you walking into that kitchen, totally ignoring why the woman was sitting on the counter, checking out the kitchen and wainscotting…so funny!! 🙂
It is a beautiful home, love the setting and will definitely put this on my movie list. I think the fireplace looks fake, hope the rest of it is not studio. Do you realise how you have changed the way we look at movies now? I usually drive my hubby mad as I comment on the decor, furniture etc in the middle of a program. His reply is “you have been watching too much HGTV” mine is “no, it’s Susan’s fault!!” (as usual) 🙂

    • What woman? There was a woman on the counter? 😉 Megan, it all started with the Home Alone house. That house turned me into this! lol I sometimes realize I’ve missed the last few bits of dialogue because I’m too busy trying to look at the decor. 🙂 Tell your hubby I’m sorry! 🙂

  30. Can you tell me if this is a free app?
I cannot wait for this movie. I sooo need a beautiful house feel good movie. The last one I saw was It’s Complicated. Seems like a long time ago.
But I do want want to see this app.
    Thanks,

  31. Thanks for the heads-up on this Movie Susan as I will definitely plan to take it in.
You are wondering about the stone on the fireplace which I agree looks a bit fake but looking at the siding (cedar shingle?) I am wondering if it might be faux too. (Vehicle wrap used for signage…..ha.) Nevertheless, either way it is a gorgeous place!
    -Brenda-

  32. This sounds like my kind of film, I will need to look out for it. I really like Diane Keaton. She was great in the Father of The Bride films. Oh and The First Wives Club, and Baby Boom which I watched the other week on dvd due to football being on so much,. And hallelujah Dallas is on next month, i didn’t miss one episode when it was in the 80’s, I even have the theme tune for my ringtone on my mobile. I just hope I am not disappointed!

  33. Thanks for the house and for the movie , I cant wait, it looks amazing!!!!

  34. Susan , what a nice surprise to see this movie appear on your post. I was so looking forward to seeing this movie also because of the house. I am a movie house watcher too. Thank you for the great preview. It will be a great chick flick that I can see with my mom. Love the pugs all over- not only funny but gives a personal touch. I used to do that with cocker spaniels when I was younger. Thanks for your fun post ,I really enjoyed it. Enjoying all your older posts too. Such fun!

  35. I have a date with my friends to see this movie on Wednesday, May 1st. Wanted to do it this weekend, but I have a HUGE fundraiser Tea for which I’m hosting a table.

Thanks for this post. I LOVE the old movie houses. The home in Something’s Gotta Give and the cottage in The Holiday are two of my faves. Cape Cod shingle siding sets my heart aflutter!

    Trish

  36. Would love to know the name of the wall color in the kitchen. I’m choosing colors for walls and woodwork for a rental house–1100 ft. bungalow with small half porch. Does anyone have the name and brand of a color that looks like this? It’s so hard for me–I don’t seem to be able to see undertones in paints and am afraid I’ll choose a paint that would look bad with most furniture colors. Also, the color should be light but dark enough to contrast well with white woodwork. Plan to use throughout the house except kitchen. Thank you so much!

  37. The best thing about The Big Wedding is the house. ‘Nuff said.

  38. So, i still don’t know where the movie was filmed.. I heard they said over the dinner they’re located somewhere in New England, but where? I want to move to a town just like that.
    Its so peaceful!

    Thanks 🙂

  39. Kori Brown says

Hi there, I just saw the movie and the house really steals the movie. While it’s a lovely movie I kept finding myself thinking –can you imagine growing up there?! Beautiful. I did have a question. Can you tell me anything about the house in Grownups 2? The movie was so-so but the house was beautiful and I think you would enjoy the home. Looking forward to reading more.

  40. marilyn in Mt. Vernon, VA says

Susan, I think I’ll have to attempt watching this movie again. We got about a quarter into it, and turned it off. With all the great actors, I thought it would have been much better; as it was, we were bored out of our minds. Perhaps I’ll give it another try and turn off the audio and simply watch it for the decor.

  41. Denise Buono says

Hi Susan! I was googling The Cottage in the movie Sabrina and found your website. I LOVE romantic movies like the ones you have listed. If you haven’t seen the original movie Sabrina I don’t think you have missed much, I can’t get used to the cast in that movie so I would rather watch the newer Sabrina. I have never seen the movie The Big Wedding, or even heard of it so now I have to watch it. I never knew you could tour all these places and estates, that’s wonderful! I would love to hear from you, and I’m going to save your website. ❤️
