The Summer Porch: Beach Cottage Decor

Welcome to the 272nd Metamorphosis Monday!

It’s been beautiful here so I’ve been playing out on the porch. This is how the hutch normally looks during the spring and summer months. I usually have a variety of white pitchers displayed along the top and my fave porch dishware, Tabletops Unlimited. Ma Maison by Dario Farrucci, displayed on the shelves.

Porch Hutch

I get a lot of comments and e-mails asking about this dishware. I found it in HomeGoods many years ago and spent the better part of that day driving around to three different HomeGoods collecting enough for 6 place settings. Have you ever done that, seen a dish pattern in a store and liked it so much you were willing to drive to several stores to collect all the pieces you needed?

Porch Hutch

I love it here on the hutch but I was craving something different for the porch this summer, something with a lighter feel. So I put away Ma Maison and pulled out another favorite summertime dishware.

Porch Hutch

Welcome to the Summerhouse! Okay, so it’s a porch, but close enough. 🙂 I didn’t buy anything new for this hutch transformation, just used things I already had.

Beach Hutch

You probably recognize the dishware since I’ve used it many times for Tablescape Thursday. I bought it back in 2008 right after the porch was added. The pattern is: Shoreline Collection-Home Studio.

Summer Hutch

I found the oar two summer’s ago in Marshall’s…or was it HomeGoods? Umm, I think it was Marshall’s.

Summerhouse

You may remember seeing it in this older post when I added a shell wreath to one of the porch doors:  A Shell Wreath for the Summer Porch

Shell Wreath for the Summer Porch

I decided to hang it this time. It has little hooks on the back, making it easy to hang. I love the idea of a summer house. Once while on a garden tour a few years ago, I saw a lovely summer house. It was a separate structure in the backyard of a home and it was fully screened in on all sides. It was comfortably furnished and looked like the perfect spot to spend an afternoon dining, napping or reading.

A few close-ups…

The lantern was recently used in a tablescape for Tablescape Thursday here: Beach Table Setting with Lighthouse Lantern

Starfish glasses are from the same Shoreline Collection.

Time to head to the garden center and get busy potting up some flowers for the decks. Love this time of year!

  1. Susan, I have long admired your Ma Maison dinnerware and yes, I have driven to 3 different stores to try to complete a setting! Your beach dishes look great together in your hutch. We’re in the peak of pollen season, I would have to throw a sheet or tarp over the hutch until it passed to save me from having to wash it all down 🙂

  2. Love your Summerhouse porch Susan. It looks all ready for summer! Thanks so much for hosting. Hope you have a great week!
    Kristi

  3. I love your summery boathouse look for your porch, Susan! Thanks so much for hosting!…hugs…Debbie

  4. Thank you for hosting this great party. Much appreciated

  5. Ooh, I love that! I would love to see where you store all your dishes, Susan. I can’t imagine!

    • Rita, they are stored in my kitchen cabinets, china hutch in the dining room and on the porch and in my laundry room cabinets. I also converted a coat closet in my breakfast area that was just a dumping ground into a “dish closet.” You can see it here: https://betweennapsontheporch.net/a-few-changes-to-my-china-closet-welcome-to-the-35th-metamorphosis-monday/ Wish I had one big Butler’s Pantry so things weren’t stored all over the place.

      • Oh my gosh, Susan! I’ve been looking for storage in all the wrong places, lol! I have a closet like that, and it’s positioned right in the open floor area where I need to access the dishes! Genius! Brilliant! Why didn’t I think of that?! THAT has just moved up very high on my wish list (I just need to figure out a niche for the vacuum cleaner and ironing board that’s stored in that closet now, which is otherwise totally underutilized). Thank you!

        • I hid my ironing board behind the door that goes into my laundry room since that door stays open pretty much all the time. 🙂
Rita, check out this old post out to see how I ended up storing my flatware…it’s worked out great!
          https://betweennapsontheporch.net/dish-storage-welcome-to-the-54th-metamorphosis-monday/

          • Ok, wow, I need those too – love the idea (pinning)! I also have several sets of flatware, not to mention rings and other paraphernalia not as efficiently stored as it could be. (ps – my husband has been trying to get me to do that with my shoes forEVAH – I keep them all in their original boxes, so that’s good enough for me. I know them by their brand & box, BAM.) Besides, plastic shoes boxes are waay better for things besides shoes, right?? Thank you again! Can you come to my house and play, and bring all your new tools to teach me? I’m skeered. 😉

            • lol 🙂 You sound like me when I had to use the circular saw to cut the shelf supports. Actually, Home Depot will cut everything for you if you just tell them the measurements, at least my HD does that. Hopefully all the locations do that.

  6. Such a cute porch. I bet there are lots of hours of enjoyment spent here. Thanks for hosting. I’m finding lots of inspiration to pin.

  7. It looks so fresh and is such an instant mental transformation to summer and salt air! I do love your Ma Maison, I can’t believe you got it at HG, and yes, I would have definitely driven all over the place hunting it down! I also love your oar, it looks great hanging on the wall! Back to rain again today, ugh!

  8. Cee Pluse says

I love both looks for your hutch — I can’t even decide which one I like better! Don’t pot up those plants quite yet. You will surely get the same weather as we will here in Athens, and temperatures are supposed to plunge into the 30s by tomorrow night (will winter never end?). We are hoping we don’t lose our Japanese maples. At least the coming rain will wash the pollen out of the air!

    • Thanks for warning me…I haven’t been paying attention to the forecast. I just brought in my house plants from the porch…appreciate that warning. I need to watch for those things. 🙂 I don’t think it’s getting all the way down to freezing here…hope it doesn’t up your way, either!

  9. I love the summery feel of your hutch now! That set is beautiful. Have a fantastic week. 🙂

  10. Thanks for hosting, Susan! Love what you’re doing on the porch! Have a wonderful week and a blessed Easter!
    Blessings,
    Nici

  11. Your dishes are beautiful! Thanks so much for hosting!

  12. Love that color green on the hutch! It’s so fresh looking. Thanks so much for hosting, Susan, and have a Happy Easter weekend!

  13. Susan,
Oh, my. . .I adore the transformation to the soft color palette of your Shoreline Collection!
Spring can certainly be a flurry of activity, but the hues on your porch give way to tranquil moments.
Potting flowers for the porch, eh??? We awoke to SNOW covered grass on the Prairie!
Thank you, dear friend for hosting Metamorphosis Monday each week!!!
    Inspiration abounds!!!
    Fondly,
    Pat

  14. LOVE your summer hutch! I’m so ready for the warmer weather! Thanks for hosting! Life to the full! Melissa

  15. Suzanne of Simply Suzannes at Home

Thanks so much for hosting, Susan!
    Have a great week,
    Suzanne

  16. Susan, your summer look is so light and fresh. I love the hanging oar. If I had your wonderful porch, I’d feel like I was in a summer house. laurie

  17. Your “summer house porch sun-room” is just fabulous!! What an absolute perfect display!! Did it AGAIN! franki

  18. Love this theme on your porch Susan! I had to wait until the pollen passed to finish decorating ours!

  19. Love your summer things on display. Can hardly believe it is nearly that time of near….where did the Spring go? I guess our Spring was more like winter. 🙂
    Thanks for hosting.

  20. SharonFromMichigan says

Susan – I just love your hutch! I was painting my walk in closet this weekend. (Something about Spring and paint just go so well together) I was able to sort through the mounds of clothing and this week I will spend evenings moving in a used hutch and two small dressers for clothing storage. I’m hoping that a nice clean, organized closet will start my Spring and Summer off to a good start. Winter, however, has not left us yet up north. This weekend it was in the 70’s and tonight they’re predicting 1-2 inches of snow! Can’t wait for Winter to get out of here! LOL

    • Sharon, you are so right…what is about spring? I’ve been cleaning out drawers and clearing out. I hope this is your very last snow! I’ll start blowing and send some of this warm weather your way! 🙂

  21. Susan – I love your hutch too! And I love the Summerhouse theme. BTW, have you painted your workbench yet? I was thinking it would be fun and beautiful in that same green as your hutch.
Thanks for bringing a lovely breath of spring into our Monday. (Ours is heavily tinted in yellow pollen up here in NC right now) 🙂

    • Not yet. I think I still have a little of that paint left over, but probably not enough. I should have enough to get some matched up to it and I do still love that color…something so soothing about that shade of green. 🙂 The pollen is so intense, isn’t it? We’ll just enjoy spring in spite of it, right? 🙂

  22. Your Summer hutch is lovely with all the beautiful summer things on display…I love the star plates and all the White! Have a wonderful Holy week dear Susan.
As always, thank you for hosting this terrific party.
    FABBY

  23. I love the new look in the hutch! Thanks for hosting!

  24. Susan, your hutch looks so fresh with all of the summer details! Thank you for sharing and for hosting! Happy week to you! Toodles, Kathryn @TheDedicatedHouse

  25. pam ~ crumpety cottage says

What a nice change. I love the Ma Maison plates, but this is also a great look and it’s always nice to change things up a bit now and then, isn’t it? I do love the Summerhouse oar. You amaze me with all your cute ‘stuff,’ Susan. 🙂

Tomorrow the high here is supposed to be 50 and then we’re going to get below freezing over night. 😮 Yikes. Oh well, I guess it just makes us appreciate the beautiful Spring days even more, when we have them. Have a wonderful week, old pal.

  26. Hi, Susan! Your porch hutch looks great, and honestly, I can almost hear the waves hitting the shore at your “Summerhouse”! I love the dishes and accent pieces. Have a wonderful week and thanks for making Monday mornings so special with your “MM”! Rosie

  27. Gorgeous HUTCH!!!! LUV IT
    Christine from Little Brags

  28. LOVE your beachy porch…makes me wish I could head to the beach, or relax on your porch. 🙂 Thanks for the great link party!

  29. I love your coastal decor — especially the lantern with the shells! I’ve been going for a coastal theme too –anything to stay cool during our hot summers! Thanks for hosting, Susan. 🙂

  30. Hi Susan, even though I love your Maison dishes, you now have my favourite set on view. Love the oar!! I am in the middle of setting up our tented gazebo which is all about the ocean, am just waiting from some new mosquito netting to arrive. I picked up some gorgeous napkins whilst in Florida, when I am done, will send you a photo, as you know, I do not have a blog.
It looks as though for the first time, I will have a good crop of Wisteria, Oh Happy Sunshine Days!!!!

  31. Well, I just came over to read your post after searching for accommodations at the BEACH, really! How appropriate is your post 🙂 We’ve had a stunning weekend here in WA which made us hungry for a weekend on the Oregon Coast. Hoping to nab some lovely rooms next time a sunny weekend is forecast.

  32. Your hutch looks so nice. What a great way to welcome Spring and Summer!

  33. I love how it normally looks, Susan, but I love this beach look also….Christine

Woke up to snow here in Wisconsin – I am soooo jealous!!!!!

  35. rattlebridge farm says

Susan, your porch looks like it belongs on Nantucket or the Outer Banks. I love your seaside theme and the soft, sea-glass colors. Your oar is perfect!

  36. I recently found your blog and have become enamored at trying to put together different tablescapes. I so love your porch and look forward to your posts. I have wondered how you keep the elements like rain and dirt from getting on your drapes and furnishings?

    • Hi Suzanne, The sheers are some type of nylon fabric (found them in Walmart for $5 a panel) so when they get wet, they dry super fast. Dirt doesn’t seem to stick to them…never notice them looking dirty. I’ve had them on the porch for around 6 years and they still look pretty much brand new. I take them down every year or two for a quick wash. The porch is two stories up so I think that helps it to stay less dirty than if it were on ground level. Pollen season is hopeless though…the pollen pours in! I just give the porch a quick vacuum about a once a month…and during the pollen season, I run the vacuum over the cushions and furniture, too. The swing and seating group on one side of the porch is outdoor wicker so it can stand up to anything. The hutch is painted with exterior paint so it’s held up well these last 6 years. The flooring is pressured treated tongue and groove pine (KDAT flooring) so it’s held up well, too. The table & chairs are indoor furniture and they are showing a small amount of wear but overall have held up well. They may have to be repainted one day, but I don’t think they’ll need it for a long time. So overall things have held up well. You’ll find a bit more info here: https://betweennapsontheporch.net/faq/ Have fun with your tables…warning…it’s addictive! 🙂

  37. Susan I’m loving the beach theme to your porch hutch – very pretty! You have the most beautiful place setting collection I’ve ever seen. How on earth do you have room to store all these pieces? Thanks for hosting the party and have a great week!

  38. Oh my, “summerhouse” sounds like a far off fantasy when it’s in the 30’s here right now, with fresh snow on the mountain tops! : )
Your vignettes are so pretty, Susan. Thank you so much for the party!

    Jeanette

  39. Gorge! Love the Beachy décor! Thank you for hosting!

  40. Thank you Susan!

    Big Texas Hugs,
    Susan and Bentley

  41. Summerhouse–love the oar; the theme evokes wonderful memories/imaginary décor scenes. And the starfish glasses are also a favorite from the post. Thanks for putting this one together. Will the hutch sport this look for awhile, or the whole summer even? (At least leave the oar on display ;))

  42. Nice to know I am not the only one who will “waste” time (hubby’s comment) tracking down every piece of a new collection. I just consider it my hobby. What fun to be able to re-decorate for each season! Inexpensively, too.
Thanks to The Christmas Tree Shop’s (New England chain).

  43. I am completely in love with this look, Susan. I am just a coastal girl at heart I guess. I am working on a coastal guest bedroom and have a couple of paddles that I want to hang on the wall. They came from my parents’ lake house where we all learned how to swim and, essentially, grew up. They don’t have little hooks on the backs though, so I have been wondering how on earth I was going to hang them. I love all of the white fish and shell vases and pitchers. Sigh.

  44. Hi Susan,
I love your dinnerware set…it is beautiful. And I love the hutch. And yes to your question…I have. I did the magnolia and I drove every where looking for it…because I had to have everything magnolia. I succeeded and it was beautiful. I actually ended up selling it. But I enjoyed it for several years.

  45. Susan, your porch is always gorgeous! I love all the star fish and the boat house look. It’s snowing here in Michigan so my porch doesn’t look near as good as yours!
    love and blessings~

  46. Yes, Yes I have! When we lived in the Lawerenceville area it was wonderful to be near stores – Tuesday Morning was one of my favorites. Now, I live so far from them – I’m just happy we have a TJMaxx nearby and a Hobby Lobby – I am always amazed when I go back to the ‘city’ at the selections at these fantastic stores – our little store has a good, but limited selection. So delighted to join your party – I hope you have a blessed Easter!
    Kathy

  47. for a follow-up to this post–does the BNOTP library have a book on summer houses? It could be grand vacation homes or little getaways in the backyard. I remember seeing something in a magazine once about a cute little backyard one built out of old windows. (maybe Southern Living?)

  48. Looks like you’re all set for a beautiful season! On Sunday we enjoyed 68 degree temps. This morning we woke up to about an inch and a half of snow. Bummer!!!

  49. We have only had hints of spring days around here, the weekend was in the high 70’s and wonderful…then Monday we had snow. Your new look has all of my favorite things. I have a hard time not decorating everything in “beach” because it makes me so happy! I love it!

  50. I just want to move into that porch …. love, love, love the beachy vibe!

  51. Terry Beaudry says

Wow, its so nice to be back in again to leave comments on other blogs!
I have always loved this set of dishes and glasses and in fact, I’ve always wanted to use this set at the beach house whenever we go….there’s just the teensy problem of the miles between us 🙂
Anyway, I love what you’ve done to “summarize” that darling hutch!

  52. Terry Beaudry says

Oh and I love the glasses too!

  53. Christina McCall says

Susan, I am not sure if I missed it in some of the comments. Do you mind sharing where you got the starfish salad plates and the larger seashell plates. Those are adorable. Next I will be looking for items from the Shoreline collection. xoxo Christina

    • I found those in Kohl’s around 6-7 years ago. Each year all the stores like HomeGoods, Marshalls, Pier 1, World Market etc… get in dishware with a shell motif, so your best bet to find some at a reasonable price would be to start looking next spring. They will probably be hard to find this time of year since we’ll soon be going into fall. You may want to check eBay and Replacements.com for the Shoreline pieces.

  54. this is gorgeous!! what color is this green hutch? love the aqua knobs, too

  55. You have some of the most beautiful dishes I have ever seen! However I have been dreaming of your green hutch and Ma Maison, designed by Dario Farrucci for the past 2+years ever since you made a post about them! I had forgotten where I had seen it. I clearly thought they were vintage. My wish to come close to the beauty of this picture that you’ve posted has led to not just hours of search on internet and stores in the hope that I will find it some day!
Now that I know what it is called…my mission gains another stage of momentum 🙂 …Hopefully Homegoods, TJ Maxx or Pier I will have it this Spring.
