What Do You Think About This Shelving & A Sneak Peak At The New Flooring

Happy Weekend! I hope you are having a great one! Just wanted to pop in with a brief update. The guys from Granite Garage just finished up with the flooring in the unfinished part of the basement today. You may remember the floor in that part of the basement looked like this. (This photo was taken before I had the drywall added.)

A previous homeowner apparently had it painted at one time. It had definitely seen better days!

Here’s how the floor looked yesterday after the GG guys sanded off all that old paint with a special machine they have for that. After finishing that process and vacuuming the floor, they got busy applying the epoxy flooring along with the color sprinkles that I chose for the flooring.

The color I chose is the same color I went with in the garage last year when I completely renovated that space. The color is called Farmhouse Gray.

They had only completed the first stage but I couldn’t resist opening the outside door to just peep in. The light wasn’t on in the room but this was what I saw. When they throw out the color chips/sprinkles, they do it to “rejection” which means they apply it to the point where the floor is literally overflowing with color sprinkles–way more than is really needed. That’s how they make sure they don’t miss any areas and why it looks lumpy at this stage.

Flooring for Basement Storage Room

Today they returned for the second and final day’s work which included scraping up the excess sprinkles and applying the sealer/topcoat. Tomorrow, after 1:00 PM, I will be able to go down and open the door and walk on the floor for the first time. I won’t be placing anything back in the room for another day or two. I’ll share how the completed floor looks on Monday.

I am seriously thinking about upgrading my shelving in this space. The two shelves I currently have in this storage room were originally in my garage. I started to donate them when the garage makeover took place last year, but at the last minute I decided to use them here in the basement. I’m not overly thrilled with their design since it’s the type of shelving that has big holes/gaps in the shelving itself. It makes storing smaller items a real pain since they have a tendency to fall over due to the gaps/holes in the shelving.

This is the shelving I’m thinking of ordering. After debating opening shelves vs shelving with doors, I think I’ve decided to go with opening shelving because I like being able to easily see what I have stored here–which will include extra household, grocery, and pantry items that I want to keep on hand as backup…things like bath tissue, paper towels, cleaning products, etc…

These have laminated shelves and the shelving is super adjustable. The height and depth are the same as my current shelving, but they are a few inches wider. If I order this shelving, I think I’ll start with three shelves as shown below. I can always add a fourth later if I find I need the extra space. (Shelving is available here: Shelving.)

I’ll be having baseboard installed soon. I’m also trying to decide on a wall color for this room, and if I should just paint the two walls that are drywalled, or also paint over the concrete walls (with the brick design) that are on the other two walls. What do you think?

Looking forward to sharing the new flooring on Monday!

  1. Wow! Susan, that’s going to be one classy storage area! Enjoy filling ‘er up.

  2. Wow ! What is that song about what a difference a day makes ? What was the subfloor under the original tile ? ♡

Luv the open shelving!! You…may just want to live w/those brick walls a bit after you paint…once painted…well, you know… That floor is “da bomb!!!” franki

    • They do already have Drylock on them, so they are kinda painted now. 🙂 The guy who gave me a quote on installing the baseboard and the painting, thought it might be a nice contrast, having the brick a different color than white. I think I’m leaning toward keeping all the walls the same color and that may end up being white since that room only has two windows.

    • I wish they had really been brick and not just concrete with a brick design. That would have been beautiful, although probably not as sturdy as concrete since that wall is part of the foundation for the house.

Do you know of a good traveling portable jigsaw puzzle board case? Looking for on that will handle 1000 to 2000 pieces.

    Thanks,
    Kelly

    • There are quite a few on Amazon. Some are large wooden boards like mine that come with a lid that you can place on top to close up, and some are the type where you roll up the puzzle. I think for traveling the roll-up kind would be better since it would take up less space.

I haven’t ever purchased any of the roll-up ones but you can see a bunch of them here and see the reviews on them.

  5. Hi Susan: You asked if you should paint just the drywall or the concrete walls too. You will be much happier if you do it all. You are not a person who does things half way.

    • I think you’re right. I actually kinda like how the white concrete/faux brick wall looks in white, but I bet I wouldn’t like it once the other walls are painted. It’s really so funny how complex this unfinished room has turned out to be…so many decisions! When all is said and done, I think I’m going to add recessed lighting/can lighting in here because these bare bulbs are so ugly.

  6. I laughed when I read “can always add a fourth later if I find I need the extra space”. (And, why not use the old shelves for your paper goods, etc. so you won’t later need the ‘4th shelf”?)

    • I wouldn’t want to mix the shelving, it would look a lot nicer if they were all the same. Plus, I’m so over that holey plastic shelving! lol I’ll donate the old plastic ones if I do purchase new shelving.

Susan, I wish I had space like that! We did our garage flooring, very similar and it is a great finish. I think I would paint all the walls for sure. Our basement walls are a real light grey and that is nice too – quiet on the eyes.

    • Interesting you mention that because a color called Agreeable Gray was suggested by the handyman who came out to measure for installing baseboards and painting. 🙂 That would contrast nicely with the white freezer, the shelving, and the white molding. Teresa, what color gray did you go with for your basement walls?

    • Another color that I think may be a bit lighter is Benjamin Moore Edgecomb Gray.

  8. No opinion on the painting issue but the bottom shelf is barely off the floor. You will not be able to clean under it. Would that bother you? Can the bottom shelf be raised a few inches? Also, if you can find them, shelves with wheels might be nice; easier to move.

  9. Oh I can’t wait to see this on Monday Susan! Love the shelves too, I think they will work so much better for you. What about using the same paint color you used in the garage, since it worked well there maybe it will work just as nicely this space too. Whatever you decide, I think the block wall should be painted along with the dry wall, that way it will all be cohesive looking. Just my thoughts, not that I know much cause I don’t! LOL Hugs, Brenda

  10. Gorgeous! I had shelves like you currently have but replacing them wasn’t in the budget so I went to the dollar store and bought the flexible cutting mats and lined my shelves with them. No more things falling over or through! Our first refrigerator had wire shelves rather than glass and I did the same for those shelves.

  11. Paint all the walls the same. I have almost the exact shelving only in dark gray. It was pretty easy to assemble and it’s very sturdy. We had a garage pipe leak and had to tear out the wall and so I used that as an opportunity to add another set of the same shelves at that time after the repair. There is a slight difference. I’ve tried to use all clear bins for storing things to keep them clean and dust free and to instantly know what’s in them.

  12. I luv everything. The only thing about the laminate shelving is that if it’s damp at all, the laminate warps vAt least that was my experience. I have the same plastic shelving and it’s super annoying with the litter holes. I purchased pieces of wood at Home Depot, they cut it for me and Nefertiti putting on the shelves, I spray painted them white. Luv your flooring choice.

    • Oh, I wouldn’t like it if it warped. Yikes! They are also 2-sided so it can be flipped but I think it’s a different color on the other side.

      • Ooos lol sorry for the typos. Hate to be a “Debbie Downer”. Also, I love the tablescapes. I thought I was the only on addicted to dishes for a while.

      • Ya hate to be a Debbie Downer. Lol. I luv your site and all the tablescapes sorry for all the typos

I agree that the dense plastic, or even metal shelves with openings create as many problems as solutions! My hubby said, “Ventilation! And they will be stronger than you think!” Um, not strong and dust accumulates in the holes plus, as you said, smaller items fall over. I ended up investing in many of the shoebox-sized containers just to hold small stuff. But, alas, things don’t always fit in those either. My over-arching advice for shelves is get the STRONGEST thing you can. You’ll never regret it and solid shelves are best, even if they need center braces to prevent sagging. I’ve learned that plates, books, boxes of toys, home repair supplies and canning jars are heavy. Not to mention paint cans. Ugh. BUT, it put a smile on my face to see the Tonka trucks sitting in your basement! I loved those days! I am going to read your second posting about the finished floor right now!
