Winter Greetings by Lenox

Welcome to the 20th Tablescape Tuesday!

A couple of weeks back I posted this tablescape…

You may remember the china I used, Winter Greetings by Lenox.

I wanted to share a bit more information about this china for this Tablescape Tuesday. This beautiful wreath and bird design was created for Lenox by wildlife artist, Catherine McClung…click HERE to access her website and see more of her amazing wildlife and nature themed art.

Ms. McClung, shown above (pic is from her website) was asked to create a bird ornament for The White House Christmas tree in 2002. In the pic below (from her website) she is standing in front of The White House. She was also featured on HGTV in their special called, Modern Masters: White House Artisans. You can read more about Ms. McClung and the HGTV special at her website.

Winter Greetings is my favorite Christmas china, but it is really a great china to use throughout the winter season. I love how the little chickadee has the end of the red ribbon in his beak. Something tells me Ms. McClung knows a little bit about whimsy. 🙂

Today I thought I’d share some of the “special” designs/plates, Ms. McClung also created for this china pattern. These are a unique size, 9 inches, which is larger than a salad plate and smaller than a dinner plate. Sometimes this size is referred to as a luncheon size. Lenox calls them “accent” plates and they feature 8 different birds by Ms. McClung. I love this size plate because it’s the perfect size for a Christmas party/buffet. I purchased around 30 of them just to use for Christmas parties.

Each plate is a little work of art…click on any of the following pics to enlarge…

Chickadee…

American Goldfinch…

House Finch…

Cedar Waxwing…

Eastern Bluebird…

Downy Woodpecker…

Nuthatch…

Cardinal…

Some of the pieces in this pattern are called “figural” pieces…they have a raised pattern, as well.

This is another style accent or luncheon size plate that I’ve also collected in this particular pattern. I love how Lenox has produced so many different accent plates for the Winter Greetings china pattern. This style plate is also a figural design…notice the raised pattern.

Another example of Ms. McClung’s beautiful paintings…this platter features a male and female Cardinal…

Four “extra special” accent plates have been created for the Winter Greeting china pattern…click on the pictures below for a better look. These plates are so detailed…so much like a painting, that I’ve actually had guests ask if it’s ok to eat from them. I don’t believe in “saving” anything…if you have it, use it and enjoy it as often as possible.

A few close-ups of each plate…click to enlarge…

I wonder if the reason so many of us are confessed “dish addicts” is because so often the china we love is just plain beautiful. To me, these plates are individual little pieces of art. No wonder we love our dishes so much! Winter Greetings is still available here: Winter Greetings

I’m off to visit all the wonderful tablescapes that have been posted for this Tablescape Tuesday…come along and join me!

So glad you’ve stopped by for Tablescape Tuesday. We have 33 participants today!

I have a little announcement/change to tell you about today regarding Tablescape Tuesday. Next week I’m going to handle the signing up for TT a little differently…thought we’d give Mr. Linky a try. I’ve never wanted to use Mr. Linky in the past because of the changes I would have to make to my template…but now there’s “Easy Mr. Linky” (no kidding) so let’s give it a whirl.

So, how does it work? Next Monday evening, after 9:00 PM, I’ll have a post available here, with a Mr. Linky box all set for you to sign up. It’s very easy to sign up using Mr. Linky and I’ll have the simple directions available for you on that post.

I decided to give Mr. Linky a try because it will allow you to join in at the last minute, without worrying about having missed the deadline for participation. 🙂 If you go to bed early and don’t add your link that night, you can add it first thing in the morning or anytime that’s convenient for you after 9:00 PM Monday night. We’ll give this a try and see how it works for everyone.

I can’t wait for you to see all the wonderful tablescapes that have been posted today!

  1. Beautiful, as usual, this week. I purchased this china last month because of seeing it on your post. Now that I’ve seen all the accent plates I’ll have to add those to the collection as well! Thank you for the information about this design and for posting such pretty tables.

  2. Terrie's Lil' Piece of Serenity says

Susan, I do love your dishes. I could easily become a plate addict. And I have never been a collector of any kind before. Thanks for sharing these beauties!!
    Hugs, Terrie

Lenox is hands down my all time favorite. I would LOVE to own this exact set. Thanks for all the information and detailed photos.
Mr Linky sounds like a great idea to me.
    Thanks again for hosting.
    ~Melissa 🙂

  5. prof en retraite says

Oh Susan…I love these! I have Winter Greetings Everyday as my Christmas china and I love it! It has 4 different birds…cardinal, nuthatch, goldfinch and bluebird…on the pieces. I especially love it because these are my favorite birds and the ones I often see in my backyard. I like yours, though, because some other birds are pictured like the house finch…another favorite of mine! These are definitely patterns for the bird lover, aren’t they? Beautiful plates!!! …Debbie

  6. White Iris Designs says

The bird plates are just the sweetest! I wish I were a plate addict…but I have too many other addictions I am dealing with right now! Maybe someday! 😉

  7. Mary Ellen (megardengal) says

Susan thank you for sharing these lovely dishes! I just adore all those sweet precious little birds! Makes me yearn for spring!!!

    blessings
    mary

  8. These beautiful plates touched my heart. I loved seeing the different birds–and deeply appreciate you photographing each one. I am now wondering if this talented artist designed my Lenox bird plates. If they are, that means your plates and mine are cousins. 🙂

I also have some smaller plates (Lenox) without birds that I HAVEN’T shown ya. LOL They are seasonal, but delicately.

  9. Beautiful plates! Each one is truly a piece of art. You really do own wonderful pieces, Susan. Thanks for showing us…Christine

  10. Absolutely lovely, Susan…
    I love the plates!
I have the Lenox eternal Christmas, but it is discontinued now…
    Beautiful post!

  11. I think we can too (what Shelia said)! I love glassware for the same reason. Each one is an individual piece of art. And for the 11 billionth time, I love those red walls more each time I come by! I love your dishes too! Except the woodpecker b/c we use to have one that pecked on our house every single morning (they don't recognize weekends) & woke me up! I do believe it's illegal to "take care of them – in the southern way – if you know what I mean!" ;O)

  12. Really Rainey says

    Oh Susan!
I am learning so much from your blog and you! Thank you so much! I love the Cardinal plates. I had put little cardinals on my Christmas tree this year and they were a HUGE success with friends and family. Then I kind of got addicted to them… Then seeing your plates! I gotta get some!

  13. These are so beautiful, Susan. What a treasure! Great post! ♥ Diane

  14. I love all your china. Beautiful plates. Love the birds. mishelle

  20. Terri and Bob says

Yes, this is totally lovely. If I didn’t come here, I wouldn’t know anything about it. Thank you for the education!

  21. Pat@Back Porch Musings says

I love this pattern. After I began collecting Winter Greetings Everyday, I also fell in love with this one. I’m very tempted to begin a collection. I have the cardinal accent plate, the only piece I own, at this time. Notice…I said at this time!

I use our Winter Greetings Everyday, through winter.

    Great post!

I have a little tablescape, from the lake, dancing around in my thoughts. Hope to have it ready for next week’s Tablescape Tuesday. I’ve missed a couple of Tuesdays and want to get back into the swing of things!

  22. Envoy-ette says

As a bird lover, this post made me sigh and “oooo”! I agree, dishes should be eaten from and SHARED. I’ll be participating all the way through Feb. so I hope you will visit me at It Could Be Worse! Do you have room for #31?

  23. southerninspiration says

oh sooooo pretty!! I love this post! and the dishes…..I have Lenox Holiday, but I sure love the bird dishes a lot!

    Suzanne

  24. Morning, Dear Susan! Oh, your dishes are so gorgeous! Thank you for sharing the info about the artist who painted these. You have so many lovely pieces. I can understand wanting to have every piece available in this pattern. Yes, dearie, we can love our dishes! 🙂
    Be a sweetie,
    Shelia 😉

  25. Dixie's Whimsey says

Greetings Susan! Your descriptions and pictures make me want to run out and buy some of this lovely Lenox… Maybe a plate at at time!

Can hardly wait to have some time to see what everyone else has done!

Even though I didn’t get to participate this week… I still did a little Emily Post tribute to table settings today… in honor of your “Tablescapes”…

    Have a Blissful week! Dixie

  26. You have shared so much info today … feels like I’ve been to the best seminar/lecture ever! Thank you so much. Maybe one or two of the little fellows would like to live in one of my birdhouses?

  27. Ma'dame French says

Oops I guess I was suppose to tell you that I was posting this week;( Love the plates especially the ones with the cardinals! French;)

  28. You know how much I enjoy watching and feeding the birds. I am sure that is why you gifted me this beautiful set.

Since I lack the storage space, mine are used year round. The plates and and salad plates rest atop my Pfaltzgraff Tea Rose, in my storage cabinet given to me by my MIL about 25-30 years ago. It had been passed to her by her SIL who bought it new when she set up her home in the 1930s or 1940s.

The top has glass so the dishes are visible and the bottom does not, so you can hide what you don't want to be seen.

Most of the time my table has rather an eclectic look with the Winter Greetings dishes and the Tea Rose stainless flatware. Still rarely use the Reed & Barton flatware we purchased. It does look nice in the storage chest though.

As you well know, most of my taste is in my mouth, but I can truly appreciate the handiwork of others. I do realize you eat with your eyes first, and that is why I enjoy your hosting this so much.

  29. I really enjoyed this post Susan. The bird plates are a work of art. So darn sweet each one. I’m also so excited that you are going to try Mr. Linky. I hope all goes well…

  30. Sidney (Sixy Mama) says

I love this china, and when I have some extra money lying around(!), this will be the first I purchase.

Thanks for sharing so much of your home!!

  31. cityfarmer says

I truly feel like part of the family.

How about some cupboard scapes? ha
I took off cupboard doors and put “stuff” in my kitchen. Bought a big old beadboard cupboard for food items.
I will post a bout it soon.

    My sis has these dishes.
Thank you from the bottom of my little ole midwestern heart for including me in the TTToday!!!

  32. Cami @ Creating Myself says

What a great post Susan! But now I have to have some of those cardinal figural plates. I can’t take my eys off them!

Thanks again for hosting this fun playday for us!

  33. Lady Katherine says

This set is so beautiful! I just love that it has blue birds too! Thanks for all info about the china, is nice to know. I had a friend that wove an ornament for the White House Tree around the same time. No line of ornaments for her, she went to selling hand dyed yarns. Love the birds!

I am going to have to call her and ask her. Better yet, I will send her here…. BTW, I think that Mr. Linky is a good idea. ~ Robyn

  52. Susan, I never knew there were so many GORGEOUS different dishes in this collection. I am going to go to the website and see what I can find! My DH’S favorite bird is the cardinal and we both LOVE birds so we definitely should have this pattern!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you SO much for this post! I learn something new everyday, it seems! Hugs, Pinky

  53. Susan, now I have one question…..where/how do you store all your dishes? I know your wonderful dishes that you posted on RMS are in the cabinet on the porch, cause you showed us, but how about all these??? And others you have shown us? I am out of room and my DH already thinks I have a ‘dish problem”:):) Thanks if you reply! Hugs, Pinky

  54. Susan (Between Naps on the Porch) says

Hi Pinky, I’ve gotten that question quite a few times 🙂 so I did a little post about how I store my china on the Fifteenth Tablescape Tuesday. Here’s the link: http://betweennapsontheporch.blogspot.com/2008/12/welcome-to-fifteenth-tablescape-tuesday.html
I didn’t show the china in the dining room china cabinet that day because I hadn’t used it yet for my Christmas tablescape and I wanted it to be a surprise. Both the Winter Greetings and the Spode Woodland are stored in that china cabinet. When you view the 15th TT, you will see where the majority of it is stored. I just bought some all white/cream china a couple of months ago that I’ll be using in an upcoming TT and I am now officially out of space for storage of china. I’ll have to start storing it under the bed as Gollum jokes, if I buy anymore!
🙂 I so wish I had a butler’s pantry…have the perfect place for one in my laundry room…maybe one day. ~sigh~

  55. Gypsy aka Tam says

    Susan,
as always a wonderful post. I LOVE those Lenox dishes and your photography. So very pretty. I’m also out of space for dishes and I’m considering getting rid of some other items to make room for more dishes *Grin*
    Have a great evening,
    Tam

  56. Terrie's Lil' Piece of Serenity says

Susan, I am on my way to bed. But, I wanted to stop in and thank-you. I had a wonderful day in blogland. Tablescaping was so much fun. And you go to so much work for us ladies. It is a pleasure to know you. How many people would do this each and every week? We are lucky to have you.
    Hugs, Terrie

  57. HI again, Susan. Thanks for answering and I didn’t tell you about my lunch setting cause I didn’t think it would be good enough for TT!!!! I may do a different one soon and will try to get to Mr. Linky and participate in TT!!!! Thanks for your kind words too, you are so supportive. Hugs, Pinky

  58. I was busy yesterday so I am just now catching up on the tablescapes…

    GORGEOUS dishes…

Love visiting your blog and learning new things!

  59. Susan you are amazing!!!! I think you are my decorating hero!!! These Lenox dishes are divine indeed. Do you have a secret source for buying your goodies? I am a dish junky. 60. Susan, my friend Kris turned me on to your blog and I absolutely love it. I can’t wait to participate in Tablescape Tuesday next week and am actually considering metamorphosis Monday. Your things are lovely and displayed to perfection. This was my treasure for the day. Thank you.
