Decorating the Screened Porch for Fall & Halloween

Welcome to the 193rd Metamorphosis Monday!

Greetings!  How was your weekend?

If you follow BNOTP on Facebook, you know what I was up to this weekend and WOW, am I tired!  It’s a good tired, though.  I spent much of the weekend decorating the porches for fall and Halloween.

For this Met Monday, I’m sharing some fun changes I made to my favorite “room” in the house, the screened-in porch.  It was time to tuck away the bird house, the garden dishware on the hutch and bring a bit of fall to this area.  Some how it morphed into fall and Halloween combined before I was done.

Here’s the “Before” which is the way the porch normally looks during summer.

Screened-in Porch

 And here’s the “After.”

Porch Decorated for Halloween

There are little bits of autumn everywhere, from the russet-colored Chrysanthemums on the shabby chair near the door, to the fall plates on the hutch.

Everything is better with a little candlelight.

It’s been a rainy, gloomy day so the candlelight really helped warm things up.

Just a few changes to the hutch…

Would you like a glass of wine?

Wine label is part of the Martha Stewart Halloween collection (found at Michael’s) and it says, “Hollow Branch House” and “Made with hand-pecked ingredients.”

The small oval table near the window went through a little metamorphosis, too.  Here’s how it normally looks during the summer.

Wicker Table on Screened in Porch

Apparently, I left one of the screened doors opened and we have some visitors!  Now, why do I keep imagining that old Alfred Hitchcock movie, The Birds.

Mercury Glass Pumpkins and Crows for Halloween Decor

A few years ago, I decorated the backs of the chairs with fall wreaths for a Tablescape Thursday.

Back of Chairs Decorated with Wreaths for Fall

Today I used those same wreaths for a decorative touch underneath the pumpkins.

If you like mercury-glass pumpkins, you don’t have to spend a lot for them.  The two pumpkins underneath the domes were found on my recent shopping trip to Queen of Hearts and they, along with the large pumpkin in front of them, were 50% off.  The smaller two pumpkins under the domes were $8 each and the larger one in front was $18.   The large pumpkin in front of the lamp was from Marshalls this year and it was only $12.99.  The tiny one was from Ross and was $4.99.

Would you like to sit on the swing?  Hope you don’t mind sharing it. 😉

Looking forward to the wonderful “Before and “Afters” for this Metamorphosis Monday!

  1. Thanks for hosting, Susan! It doesn’t matter what you tweak or change on your porch, it always looks so fabulous!

  2. Hi Susan, all your work “Fallifying” your porch was well worth it. Just beautiful. Love all your “fowl” friends on the porch. Thanks so much for hosting. I just happened to still be up to catch your post first thing! Happy Monday!

  3. I love all your gorgeous Halloween touches. And I just LOVE your holiday headers! LOVE THEM! Thanks for hosting, Susan. 🙂

  4. Looks fun, Susan. I’m beginning to put some things out and about here. Your porch always looks so inviting…..Sarah

  5. Susan, Your porch is so wonderful. I just love everything about it. I do have one issue. I see that your trees are still very green. Personally I see no reason to rush the season because I am a spring and summer girl. I love your decorated chair back; I may have to borrow that idea for Christmas; I think I have some small ornaments that I could gather into a cluster with some greens and ribbon, but for now I am holding on for dear life to the summer. (I am just kidding in case my humor does not translate.)

    • I know, I’m the same way…always sad to see summer end. But I do like to get my decorations up early because then I get to enjoy them a nice long time. I love all the holidays and love decorating for them. Like your idea for chairs backs for Christmas!

  6. Hi Susan,

Your porch and home look gorgeous all decorated for autumn! I too love mercury glass. Thank you for hosting this lovely party. I’m joining today with an autumn rake project. The leaves are starting to turn a beautiful autumn color here. Blessings to you.

  7. I’d love to share a seat on your swing 🙂 Love all your fall touches! Thanks for hosting!

  8. Mary from Virginia says

Your porch looks GREAT! Love the candle holders in black mixed with your mercury glass pumpkins- really neat looking! I have the same fall plates and they look so good displayed on your hutch. You have out done yourself!

  9. I love it when you change your porch around for the seasons….and that you not only beautifully decorate the table but that wonderful hutch too….love “the birds”….cannot wait to see what you do with the porch!!….Have a wonderful Monday Susan!

  10. Oh…and I just love it when you change out your beautiful header for the seasons…love it!

    • Thanks, Shirley! I just had my header slightly increased in depth today so it’s not being cut off at the top and bottom. 🙂 I love changing them out for the seasons. Do you get the feeling I’ll never grow up?

  11. Love your porch! It’s all so simple and so perfect. I always love some crows added into the mix too!

  12. Bit by bit the Fall transformation is taking place here at CedarHill but today the metamorphosis is about refreshing the bath…..Autumn cleaning….LOL…Not fun but necessary. Your porch is beautiful Susan. Love the dishes and your mercury glass and the chair fluffing. Thank you so much for hosting. xo

  13. Lovely changes to your always beautiful porch! I especially love the small oval table with the mercury glass pumpkins and all those visitors!
    Have a great week!

  14. The halloween banner tuned out great. I hadn’t noticed it before today. 🙂 The mercury glass looks awesome!

  15. Susan, also, what is your maintenance schedule on those awesome drapes? I can’t tell if your porch is enclosed. I am going to assume it is since it is in such impeccable shape.

    • Catherine, so far, I’ve been taking them down and running them through the wash about every two years. I usually toss in a little bleach. They are 4 1/2 years old now…can’t believe how well they have held up, especially since they were only $5 each at Walmart. They are just polyester sheers and have been perfect for the porch because when they get wet during a bad storm, they dry in a matter of minutes. They stay looking clean except for the very bottom edge that lightly scrapes the porch floor. I’ll probably take them down this winter and wash them…get them all ready for spring.

  16. Your porch looks like such a fun place to sit and relax. I love all of your fall touches. Thank you for hosting, Susan!

  17. You are the Tippi Hedron of porch makeovers! Just watch out for those birds!
    Kelly

I’m definitely going to steal the black raven under the cloche idea to add to my outdoor deck arrangement.
I knew I needed something for my cloche but hadn’t visualized it and now I’ve got it! I think you better keep thosee screened doors latched! I love how smart those birds were and knew just where to land!! That’s a fun arrangement on the table and now you will get to enjoy it all month!

  51. I love it. You do such a great job. You motivate me to want to do this also. Thanks for your ideas and thanks for this blog. I am so glad I found it. I am trying to get a fireplace mantel installed next year so I can do some decorating there too.

  55. Susan,

Your porch is gorgeous in every season! But I’m completely distracted with the “Pin It” button that pops up when my curser moves over your pictures … please share the secret with us!

    🙂

    Linda

  56. You have the best porch in the whole world! I would LIVE out there! Thank you for hosting MM! We did a complete remodel of our kitchen, so this was the perfect place to share! I will upload to Houzz, too! Christie

  57. Susan, I always enjoy seeing your porch, whether it’s for a special occasion, holiday, or just an ordinary day. I wish I could find some mercury glass pumpkins, but they are elusive. As for your unwanted guests- unlike my mole problem, you can control your bird visitors much better than I can- so be mindful of those windows and doors! ~smile~

    • Moles can definitely be a PAIN! Sue, check TJ Max, HomeGoods, Ross and Marshalls. I saw a good many in Marshalls…more than anywhere else this year. They are elusive. I know PB has them, but they are bit more, but really nice and heavy…good quality there. I have one of there’s…it’s in the center of the table between the candelabras.

  58. Your porch is just beautiful! Thanks for hosting!

  59. Susan, your post inspires me to get off the computer and finish my fall decorating. Your porch looks awesome, and I love those mercury glass pumpkins. I have not seen any of those around here except in the PB catalog! Your fall header looks fabulous, too!

  68. I love your porch. If I had this space, I would never be able to leave!!

  69. Susan, the porch is beautiful! I absolutely love all of the mercury glass pumpkins and well.. everything! You may have answered this before, but I’m new to your blog and would be so grateful if you would share where you found your black crows? Especially the beaded fellow enjoying a glass of wine on the hutch. Thanks so much for hosting the party. I just love your blog and can’t for the life of me figure out why it took so long for me to get here! LOL ~Mary

    • Hi Mary! Thanks so much! I’m so glad you did find BNOTP! Yay! 🙂
I found all the crows at Michaels last year and this year. I bought the orange breasted sparkly one last year. Unfortunately, Michaels only seems to get a few in each year and they disappear about as fast as they put them out. I’ve learned to start watching for them early on in the season because the location near me never stocks very many and they go quickly. In the past, Pottery Barn had them, but they didn’t get any in this year. Recently, I was looking online to see if I could find some with the open wings since I only have one like that and it’s a small one. The open winged crows are really hard to find and when you do, they are pretty pricey, more than I wanted to pay. If your local Michaels doesn’t have them, check online. You may also want to check Big Lots and JoAnns…sometimes they have a good selection of Halloween things.

      • Thank you Susan! I’ll check my local Michaels and if they’re out, at least I know to get an early start next year! If I happen to find any with open wings when I’m shopping around, I’ll be sure to let you know. :~)

  70. Your porch looks so lovely, Susan! I love the way you combined Autumn with subtle touches of Halloween. Those mercury glass pumpkins and the ravens are just wonderful together! Thanks again for hosting all the links. They’re always so inspiring.

  71. Hey Susan!
Me and my wife were stunned with how beautiful your porch it. You put all the pieces together in one masterpiece, actually, me and my wife were having a hard time decorating ours right now.

I'd love to hear from you! Please leave a comment!
