Welcome to the 835th Metamorphosis Monday! I have a simple Before and After this week, but it’s an important one. Back around August of 2022, I purchased a new desk chair for my home office/studio.
This chair has been great and is super comfortable. I’ve really enjoyed it! (Chair is available in 3 colors here: Comfy Desk Chair.)
Off and on over the past few months, I started having an issue with the wheels not working quite right. The wheel mechanism is designed as two narrow wheels that turn as the chair moves. The problem I’ve been having is this: though the two narrow wheels turn just fine, when I move my chair around, the whole wheel mechanism tends to drag across the floor mat. It feels like the wheel mechanism is not rotating as it should to change direction, so the skinny wheels never get a chance to roll. Every once in a while, the whole wheel section will rotate in the direction I am moving the chair, and then the two little wheels roll just fine. But the majority of the time, the wheel unit doesn’t turn and the wheels just drag across the mat. It’s a disturbing feeling when it happens.
I was tired of that happening and was worried that it would eventually damage my bamboo floor mat. I still really like the chair, so rather than replace the chair I decided to try some new wheels. These wheels had great reviews so I ordered them hoping they would fit my chair, and they did! They are designed in sort of a rollerblade style and they glide effortlessly no matter which direction I move my chair.
I’m so pleased with how well they are working, I wanted to share them in case you’re dealing with a rolling desk chair that’s having similar problems with its wheels. If your desk chair could use new wheels, you’ll find these available here: Rollerblade Style Desk Chair Wheels/Casters. One note of caution: These wheels glide so effortlessly that when I push back from my desk and stand up, it’s easy for me to accidentally send my chair scooting itself right across the room. I’m sure that will eventually stop as the wheels get a little more used. They are such an improvement over the ones that came with my chair—definitely a better wheel design.
Looking forward to all the wonderful Before and Afters linked for this week’s Met Monday! Pssst: Did you know Between Naps On The Porch is on Instagram? Thanks for the tip! We bought an office chair from the Container Store three years ago – bungee look and a pretty blue. I was surprised how comfy it is…and so far it moves easily. But good to know there is a fix if it does not.
Ann, is the Container Store closing? Or just some locations? I think I heard recently that it was closing. I’ve bought several things from them over the years that I really enjoy.
Saving this one on my Amazon list! I bought this same chair at your recommendation and am really pleased with it. No problems with the wheels so far (I’ve nearly backed into my sleeping dog accidentally a couple of times!). But I did have wheels lock on another desk chair and it’s so frustrating. That one is still in my office for my husband to use occasionally and this may be the solution.
Thanks, Heather! I’m so glad you haven’t had any issues with the wheels not working right. I’m not sure why mine kept doing that…maybe they just needed greasing or something. Really happy with these so far!

I learn so much from your blog 🙂 I had no idea I could replace the wheels on my chair – I have a similar problem with my sewing room chair. After reading this I did a little research and yes, I can replace them! I’ll be so glad to quit fighting to get my chair moving, thank you!
Yay! I’m so glad yours can be replaced, too. It’s makes a world of difference! Patty, if you order the same wheels that I did, be careful the first few days/weeks since they are FAST! lol Just make sure the chair is completely under you before you sit down. I just about sat on the floor a few days ago since any movement against the chair will set it rolling. That will calm down after a bit.
The new ones look really nice. I can’t stand it when a chair doesn’t roll right because of the wheels. Looks like you found the perfect fit. That’s such a good feeling!!
I know, so annoying! Thanks, Linda! I hope you are doing great and staying warm!
Oh that’s great that you got to keep your favorite chair, and SO nice not to have to go through the process of replacing it! I have a glass mat for my work chair and I run into the same problem with it zipping across the floor. Just be sure you hold onto something when you go to sit in it – I may or may not have hit the floor a couple times by not paying attention … ! Thanks for the great tip, and thanks, of course, for hosting. Happy Monday!
I was so tempted to try one of the glass mats when I ordered one for the desk in the Dollhouse. They look so pretty in the photos. I know what you mean…these wheels are really fast right now since they are brand spanking new. I know that will calm down after a bit. Thanks for that warning, Barbara!

I have been looking for a new desk chair – my thing is I need a lot of very comfy padding where the backs of the knees hit. The chair I have now is making my legs go numb. NEVER a good thing. Is your chair extra padded in that area? Looks like it but never can tell. Glad to know you now have great wheels.
Sure hope The Container Store doesn’t close. My daughter used to work there years ago and I bought so many great things there. But so many of the brick and mortar places are closing due to the internet. Can’t compete with them – but their closet organizers are so good and the people are so knowledgeable about them. Funny quip: my daughter was so patient and good at wrapping gifts that at Christmas the manager insisted she teach everyone how to wrap so beautifully. I’d forgotten all about that till it was brought up this past holiday. Fun memory for her. She really does wrap beautifully LOL.
Awww, what a nice compliment to be asked to teach all the others! There really is an art to beautiful gift wrapping.
Yes, it’s very padded where the back of the knees rest. The whole chair is really well padded. I’ve had chairs that started out with a nicely padded seat then seemed to lose that over time and the seat would become hard, but not with this chair. It’s very comfortable!
Little off topic. Does it feel odd to go from one home to rhe other now ? They are so different and unique.
