The book I’m sharing today is for anyone who has an appreciation or love for all things tabletop. A drool-worthy book if ever there was one!
In the BNOTP Library: Laying The Elegant Table: China, Faience, Porcelain, Majolica, Glassware, Flatware, Tureens, Platters, Trays, Centerpieces, Tea Sets
Author: Ines Heugel
Hardcover: 184 pages
This is one of those rare books that has a beautiful front and back cover, even without the dust jacket. I love it when books are like that!
3 Things I Like About This Book:
- Beautiful pictures! If you love beautiful dishware, silverware, stemware and accoutrements for the table, take a heart pill before opening this book. 😉 It certainly gets my heart beating faster whenever I take it down from the shelf and indulge!
- If you’ve ever wondered about the difference between stoneware, bone china, porcelain, etc… this book delves into the history of how those first pieces were created. It also goes into the history of the how and when blue and white dishware, floral patterns, majolica and other patterns began to appear.
- There’s a helpful section sharing how to remove stains and repair cracks in porcelain and fine china. Chapters are titled: The Art of Table Setting, Dinnerware, Serveware, Flatware, Glassware and Stemware, Table Accessories and finally…Tea, Coffee and Chocolate.

Hi, Susan,
Thank you for the recommendation! I immediately ordered this book and I look forward to drooling on it when it arrives!! (LOL) Rosie
lol Hope you like it as much as I do! Bibs are helpful when reading it. 🙂
Since I have been dubbed the Imelda Marcos of china, I think I need this book, Susan! 😉
I am giving away a tablescape book on my blog, FLAIR. It is my fave!
My two other favorite books are the one that recently came out about Furlow Gatewood, ONE MAN’S FOLLY. I have loved him forever! So glad they convinced him to do this. He is my all time favorite designer/antiquarian next to Mario (I have his Buattapedia, too!). I also love the book A NANTUCKET CHRISTMAS which inspired some of my design choices prior to the stager upsetting my applecart some. Remember the green striped walls in one shot? Those went bye-bye here, and I am tempted to paint them back. I hand painted them, and everyone loved them. Well, with one exception. 😉 I have other books that you have, too, but you have several I’ve not seen.
xo
Sheila 🙂
