Oh my gosh, I just recently discovered and used the most amazing tool! Have you ever wanted to lift up a heavy piece of furniture, but didn’t have anyone available to help? I have been wanting to remove these little knob-like feet from under the bun feet on my desk for a while now since my desk is a tiny bit higher than I would like it to be.
These are smallish feet that I wanted to remove. I had a feeling that they were just screwed in, and they were. This desk weighs a blooming ton. If I remember correctly, I think the info online stated that it weighs 250 pounds! I mentioned to my son a while back that I’d like his help with lifting my desk up so I could remove the little feet from underneath. I can never remember to ask him to help with that when he’s here visiting, so I got an idea.
I looked online and found an awesome tool that will help you lift heavy furniture pretty much effortlessly! I didn’t think to take any photos when I used it last night, it was probably too dark to get decent photos in the office, anyway. So I did a mini-reenactment this morning. To use this tool, I took a few of the little attachments (seen in the photo below) and stacked up as many as I needed to fit up underneath my desk. The riser attachments are the round black things in the photo below. This tool comes with a bunch of those in varying heights. Once I stacked a few of those up, I placed the tool (that’s the red part) on top, then placed it up under the desk. Then I just pressed down on the red handle and the desk lifted up so easily!
The desk has eight bun feet, four down each side. I discovered that I could place the lifter tool under the middle section of the long side of the desk, and easily lift that entire side of the desk at once. So I was able to remove all four of the little brown, tab thingies from all four bun feet down one side of the desk by lifting that side of the desk just once. Same for lifting the other side! Update: Just want to verify, I did not remove the bun feet from the desk, only the tiny brown things that were screwed into the bottom of the bun feet. That lowered the desk a small amount, which is what I wanted.
See that stack of books? Since this was my first time using the tool, to be extra safe, once I lifted the desk up with the lifting tool, I shoved a stack of books up under the desk to hold it up. That allowed me to move away from the lifter and unscrew all the little feet off each bun foot down that side of the desk using both hands. I could have moved the lifter around the desk from foot to foot, but I preferred having two hands available to unscrew the little feet since it went much faster that way. This method worked really well!
An object can be lifted much higher than this, I just snapped a quick photo this morning just to give you an idea of how it works. In the reviews, a lot of folks mentioned using the lifter tool to lift up heavy furniture to place floor protectors or furniture sliders underneath. Such a great tool to have. I’m sure I’ll be using it again.
Love this tool—wish I had known about it a long time ago! If you could use a tool like this, you’ll find it available here: Furniture Lifting Tool.
Update: Talbots is having a flash sale, everything is 40% off! I love this sweater, especially with the wonderful floral top they’ve paired it with. It would look great with just about any color jeans or slacks. The sweater is available here: Fall Sweater. (Note the 40% off discount appears once the item is in the cart.)
Here’s a close-up of the top…love the design! The floral shirt is available here: Floral Top with Contrasting Cuffs.
See you tomorrow for Metamorphosis Monday!
Great idea! I’ve always wondered if this gadget would work. Thanks for the information.
Worked great!
We need a photo of the after!!!
It doesn’t look very different since the feet were kinda short to start with. Definitely can tell the difference when I’m sitting at my desk, though.
Oh I get it now. I misunderstood, I thought you removed the bun feet entirely and the desk was sitting flat on the floor! My bad, shouldn’t have read so fast!
Ohh, no. I love the bun feet. Those are still there. I just wanted to get rid of those tiny brown things that were under the bun feet since they were making the desk a little taller.
That is so cool. It operates like a car jack lift, but I’m wondering what does to the underside of your furniture? You could get an adjustable office chair that you can raise, lower, and move in different positions so that sitting at your desk is comfortable for you. Is your desk now sitting on the floor without the feet?
It didn’t do anything to the underside, it is designed with a flat surface. Read the reviews on it at the link to see how well it works. I already have a desk chair that raises and lowers, but the desk was still a tiny bit higher than I wanted and I didn’t want the chair too high which would have been uncomfortable. Yes, it’s sitting on its bun feet now. I have a side table at home in my office with bun feet and it rests directly on those with no issues.
It’s…like having a new buddy!!! (“Sometimes”…I “talk to my tools”…don’t judge…”friends” in need… franki
🙂 I wish I’d known about this buddy a long time ago! I’ve been doing the lift and shove books underneath thing for a while. This is so much easier than trying to lift something with your back while showing books underneath with your feet.
I love how you go to the effort to find these handy gadgets and share with us.
Thanks, Lin! I was so glad it worked just as described. 🙂
I was confused at first. I thought you removed the bun feet but after re-reading it, I see you removed the little rubber parts, that protect the floor, from the bun feet. That tool will probably come in handy again; how many times could you have used that in Ga?
Exactly! I love the bun feet, def wouldn’t want to remove those. I was just trying to make the desk a teensy bit lower since it is higher than most desk. That little bit did help a lot.
I too would have like to see a photo of the desk in place after you removed the bun feet. I actually liked the bun feet but having the desk be the right height for you was far more important….thankfully you had an easy solution! If there was one to be found….you would find it!
I didn’t remove the bun feet, I removed the little brown things that were attached to the bottom of the bun feet. So the desk looks the same, it’s just a little bit lower now which is good since it was a little higher than I prefer. This is what I removed:
I love the bun feet. 🙂
You are so amazing. I think a tutorial on how to be as industrious as you are would be fantastic.

Thanks for doing some research on this. I could undoubtedly find use for this tool. Now if only there was a tool to help me rotate my very heavy king size mattress!
Ordering one of those right now! If it lifted your 250lb desk, it should work for my file cabinets, thank you.
Mini reenactment. That’s cute. And what a great find! Thank you for sharing that. Like you, I sure could have used that mini jack many times over the years.
