Greet Your Guests with an Autumn Basket

Welcome to the 190th Metamorphosis Monday!

Ever since I came across this picture of Mary Carol Garrity’s front door with this eye-catching, unusually long basket, I’ve been hooked on decorating doors with a basket of flowers.    This photo is from the book, Nell Hill’s Decorating Secrets and it is an excellent book.   I think I have every book she’s written and I love them all.  Highly recommend them!

Mary Carol Garrity's Front Door with Basket

I have never been able to find a basket as long as Mary Carol’s and my red front door may be too short for that anyway, but I do love decorating it with a floral basket for the season.  Here’s how it sometimes looks in the spring and summer.  This is such a fresh, happy look for the warm season months.

Spring Basket on Front Door

Last fall, I decorated it with a large basket I found while thrifting.  I loved the basket, but it always felt a little too big for my front door. (See fall door basket in this post: Autumn Basket for the Front Door)

Decorate Front Door with Floral Basket for Fall Autumn

This year, I decided to go a different direction.  I found a dark brown basket earlier this spring while antiquing and bought it with the fall season in mind.  (Update:  A reader of BNOTP found a similar basket HERE.)

Decorate Front Door with an Autumn Fall Floral Basket

I don’t know why but I’m in a purple mood this year.  I prefer live plants over faux/silk anytime, but there’s no denying the easy maintenance of silk plants for a front door basket.

Autumn Basket For The Front Door 2

When I was in Michael’s today and saw all the Halloween goodies, it put me in the mood to use a rich purple color in this year’s autumn door arrangement.

I’m looking forward to adding a bit of spooky fun to it for Halloween, unless I come up with a completely different idea for the door for the Trick-or-Treaters.

Decorate Front Door with an Autumn Fall Floral Basket

Have you already decorated your front door for fall, yet?  If so, what colors did you use this year?

I’m loving the purple with the subdued orange, creams and browns.

It still feels like summer here in Georgia, but when those cool temps do arrive, I’ll be ready. Looking forward to your wonderful “Before and Afters” for this Metamorphosis Monday!

  8. Gorgeous wreath, thanks for hosting! XO ~Liz

  9. Love the basket on your front door ! Very pretty !

  10. Hi Susan,
Love your basket on the door, really looks pretty. My front door is painted exactly the same color as yours,
and I love it, I also have brass door handles and a kickplate. Yours opens the opposite direction of mine tho.
I have a friend who has double door and she has a basket on each door and it really looks great.
I will use the same thing this fall as I have the last 3-4 Falls. I purchased a scarecrow wallhanging, so it
looks great on the front door, as I put a wreath on the house as well, and a fall flag out too.
It has all the Fall color, no purple tho! lol But he is cute……………………

    Have a great week,
    Blessings, Nellie

  11. Your front door is lovely! I love your red door.

  12. So pretty, Susan! I am not quite ready to drag the fall stuff down from the attic…maybe this week! This morning’s cooler temps were nice, though! Thanks for hosting!…hugs…Debbie

  13. Oh my goodness….It was great to see some Fall doors as I am way way behind on changing from summer to autumn. Hopefully this week the seashells will get put away and the white boo pumpkins will come out. I do have a plan to add black to my Fall door scape. Soon as Bobby G. gets my corn stalks home I can start. 🙂 Have a wonderful week. xo Love your door basket!

  14. Love the smaller version – and the purple is gorgeous!
    Kelly

  15. I love the basket on your front door and the lovely flowers you chose to put in it. Thanks for hosting this week!
    Blessings,
    Nici

  16. Oh, Susan!
I’m looking for a basket for my door since the first time I saw yours – almost one year ago! Sigh!
I haven’t been lucky yet! I’m afraid they don’t sell such baskets – here! Sigh, again! (If I would find them I would buy a white one and a light brown one, because my door is dark brown… No, wait… I would buy a dark brown basket, too, because I love that color! It doesn’t matter, right? ;-))
So I already hung my “fall” wreath on the door which involves all the classic earthy colors I love so much.
But I love the purple you added to your new basket, too! Oh my! A new idea…Hmmm…:-D
(What I’m looking too for my fall decor this year is a cornucopia for my kitchen! I think I’ll go to the mall today! lol)
    Hugs!
    Cecilia

  17. The fall door baskets are GORGEOUS! Thanks so much for hosting! Life to the full, Melissa

  18. Thanks so much for hosting! Hope you have a great week!

  19. Thanks for getting us in the mood for Fall with your beautiful basket/flower arrangement. Thanks also for hosting Metamorphosis Monday for us again!

  20. I love your cheerful red door, and the basket & fall flower arrangement look fantastic! I may be biased because purple is my favourite colour, but I think the purple flowers really add the WOW to the arrangement 🙂 Happy autumn!

  21. The basket of Fall florals is beautiful, Susan! I think the wonderful thing about Fall decorating is that you can pull together just about anything & in any color, and it works. I tend to be more of a traditional Fall colors person — oranges, browns, golds — but I don’t hesitate to toss in some purples & even turquoise. This year I have an infatuation with green, so I have a lot of different shades of green mixed in with my Fall decor.

Thanks so much for hosting this fab party each week!

    CAS

  22. Your front door looks beautiful, as it always does, and your new Fall decoration is the perfect size. This was the first time I noticed your porch/wall lights and they are beautiful too. I’m in the mood for Fall but since it’s still very warm here in the South, I’ll wait a little longer to decorate. I’m getting anxious, though! Thanks, as always, for your wonderful Blog and I enjoy it everyday. When you don’t have a new posting up, I explore and click on some others who have joined your parties.

  23. Love the purple too…I also just did an entire basket full of purple…I haven’t got my “fall” on but am working on it,we just got our front rockers sand and painted,so we are on our way.

  24. Your door basket is spectacular!…So love the baskets…I have narrow double doors and hard to find the right fit for the my doors…Love the purple…that color is so popular now…see it in many magazines and decorating shows…I just love the combination of the colors you used…your porch is wonderful Susan….Happy Monday and thanks for hosting!!!

  25. Hi Susan,

This new arrangement is so pretty. The purple looks good with the other colors, but it also looks good with your red door. It really pops! I like your new brown basket a lot, and the size of it is perfect. Changing the door decor is always a great sign of the new season. It feels great here today; fall is in the air. 🙂

Thank you for hosting Met Monday and have a wonderful day!

    Denise

  26. I adore the shape of that front door basket. Thanks for sharing and for hosting every week. I appreciate it!

  27. I just love those colors in your fall basket, Susan! I always associate those beautiful jewel tones with Autumn. And I think this basket is my favorite on your door… the length, width and color are just right! Thanks for hosting the Met Monday party. I always look forward to seeing what people have done. It’s all just so inspiring! Take care and have a beautiful week.

  28. If you “like” purple…just take a look at the “current” “Canadian House and Home!!” That purple makes me swoon! Your door is a celebration of Autumn! franki

  29. Thank you so much for hosting Susan, I am loving the basket on your door, the purple accents are so pretty. Have a wonderful week, hugs

    Tanya 🙂

  30. Love the colors!

  31. All your door baskets are beautiful, but I think I like the latest one the best, and of course I like the purple in it! I took off the summer flowers and added a fall bush with some purple flowers and rattan balls to my front door scrolly wreath thingy- still not sure what to call it! 🙂

  32. I love having sreaths on my doors and change them with the seasons. I have made 3 new ones this year. Love how you decarated your door. Have a great week. Carol

  33. I adore baskets for front doors too! You picked some amazing colors, textures and flowers for your fall basket. I LOVE the purple…may have to incorporate that into mine this year too! Thanks so much for sharing your beautiful style with us! And Thanks for hosting!!!

  34. Thanks for hosting such a great party! I look forward to checking out many of the projects. Love the idea of using a cool basket on the front door. Looks great!

  35. Susan, your basket looks gorgeous. I have a question for you. Did you have to put anything on the back of the basket to stop it scratching the front door?
    Thanks for hosting.

    • Megan, I usually put some of those sticky felt-like pads that you can buy for the bottoms of chair legs (at Home Depot) on the back. I didn’t this time but I do need to do that, just to be safe.

      • Thanks Susan, I once had a wreath which did that on our last house which had a Burgundy coloured door, I was not popular with hubby!! 🙂

  36. Oh how I love door baskets – so charming for the fall and winter!!! Yours is absolutely gorgeous with the purples and oranges. Thanks for another great party Susan! Jane

  37. I just love the addition of deep purple to the usual oranges and browns, Susan! And your new brown basket really does look perfect on your door! As always, you are the decor Queen, girl! 🙂

    xoxo laurie

  38. Caroline @ c.w.frosting says

I like fresh over silk florals too but the colors here are so beautiful and vibrant!

  39. Every basket it’s so pretty on that gorgeous red door!! Thank you for hosting yet, one more great MM. Enjoy a good week.

  40. Thanks for hosting! I love your Fall door! Would love it if you would share your Fall door at my Make it Pretty Monday party at The Dedicated House. http://thededicatedhouse.blogspot.com/2012/09/make-it-pretty-monday-week-14.html Hope to see you at the bash! Wishing you a grand week. Toodles, Kathryn @TheDedicatedHouse

  41. This is so lovely. The streaming flowers gives the illusion that the basket is longer. I will have to mentally file that tip away for future use. Great post.

  42. Your new brown basket looks fabulous on your front door. I have never been much of a purple person, but I have really started liking and using it more this past year. The combination of colors and flowers in your basket is very autumnal.

  43. Ok, you just inspired me to get busy on my
front door, and porch! Living in Florida
does not get one in the Fall mood but I’m
    in!
Thanks for sharing such beauty for the
    front door!
    Sandy

  44. Hi Susan! You’re so on-the-ball! I’m still hanging on to summer! This link is SO pertinent to me right now as I’m re-vamping my life, my blog and approach to motherhood! Metamorphasizing ME! 🙂

  45. I like that long basket, too. Do they not sell them? What you did is very pretty. I need to get with it.

    • They may have when that pic was taken…it’s a pretty old book of hers. I think I’ll check their website to see just in case. One of these days, I’m driving there to shop in person! lol It would be a long drive from Georgia!

  46. Your basket on the front door is just beautiful. You are definitely ready for Fall!!

    Judy

  47. Susan, I think you have found the perfect basket for your door! Your fall arrangement is lovely and the addition of the purple does add that important contrast. I am just not ready to embrace fall, so no autumnal accepts have been unpacked. That said, I am certainly enjoying the decor of others. I am sure you have some wonderful decor yet to come for the season. Looking forward to your Thursday post. MM

  48. Susan,
Love the front door basket! Adore the use of purple for Autumn!!! Have a wonderful week!
    Fondly,
    Pat

  49. I think the new dark basket is the perfect size for your front door. I have an empty basket hanging on my front door…this has inspired me to fix that problem!!!
    Thanks for hosting.
    Rhonda

  50. Funny you should mention Mary Carol Garrity! Her fall open house was this past Saturday! Stop by my blog and check out the tour of her historic home. Right now I’m featuring the interior and tomorrow I’m posting the tour of her garden. It’s beautiful!

  51. I love it! You did such nice florals and the dark basket is great!

  52. Now, that’s the perfect size and color basket for your door. It looks lovely.

  53. Hi Susan,
Your door looks beautiful! Thank you so much for hosting and have a lovely week! Angie xo

  54. Your autumn basket is so pretty on your front door, Susan–I love it, and the little shot of purple. I am using some non-traditional colors to decorate for autumn this year as well! Thank you for hosting the party–I do appreciate it! I’m reading Nell Hill’s Feather Your Nest right now, and enjoying it!

  55. Love the look! Your colors are great and I love the purple in there too! I was going though my post from last Halloween and reviewing the pumpkin wrapped with ribbon that I got inspired to do by from you! I had some purple in that too!
It’s that time of year again…now I need to dig that pumpkin out and use it for a display!

  56. Beautiful. I’m loving the purple!

  57. Love the fall doors, an inspiration. Thanks for hosting, Laura

  58. Stunning basket. Love the draping effect.

  59. Susan, I love the basket on your front porch door. My door is about that same color copied from Colonial Williamsburg’s Palace Arms Red. You know, I had not thought about tossing in purple with fall flowers, but am thinking why haven’t I? Your kick plate reminds me that mine needs a thorough cleaning! Thanks, Helen

  60. I simply haven’t had the mood to decorate for fall yet. Maybe because it has been so summer-like still?? BUT, your lovely door has started the decor juices flowing! What a great idea!

  61. Lovely! It’s a small world. I’m in the process of creating some new decorations using twig baskets!! I also love the purple colors and have been using them more in my fall vignettes.

  62. Susan,
Love you fall basket. And against your red door too! I painted my door red a few years ago after it was black. It just needed that pop of color! I still have not decorated for fall.Thank you for hosting!
    xx
    Anne

  63. Beautiful! How is it attached? (would love to have seen a picture of how you did it). Did you have to put a hole in your door? I don’t think my husband would go for that unless it was going to stay there … forever!

    • Thanks, Marlys! My front door is wood…original door to house and I just used the skinny nail that was already in it. I do reuse it a good bit, although I have another nails a little ways lower that I also use. They are both real skinny so thankfully, the holes would barely show if I removed them.

  64. This fall door is just gorgeous. I love the purple, orange, and cream flowers in the basket. Wow!

  65. Hi there Susan,
This makes want to get out all my Fall decor, its starting to feel like Autumn here in the Pacific Northwest….I can smell it in the air and see it in the way the sun sits low in the sky!
I love the touch of purple in the arrangement, it gives it a rich feel against the red door…my favorite color door!

  66. Susan, thank you for this new idea. I have always used a vine wreath covered in silk autumn leaves and silk mums on my front door but now I’m enthused about having a basket! I love your idea of adding to it for Halloween and Thanksgiving. And I might just copy your colors because they are so pretty. I really like the cream flowers that spill over at the bottom. Hope you won’t mind–you are my inspiration!

  67. Love this type of basket ..have one like the smaller ones beside my front door and I would love to have one like the #1 photo..oversize long basket. I only keep very distinctive baskets these days..no ordinary ones. That first one is certainly not ordinary-WOW!

  68. Doreen Krajzel says

Oh my goodness Susan, I love, love, love your fall arrangement. I have several baskets in mind for my own front door, which is more of a burgundy color. And I just purchased similar flowers and picks from the dollar store earlier this week! What an inspiration, thanks. Love, Doreen

  69. Carolyn Byers says

Where can I purchase this type door baskets?

    Thanks.

  70. Jane Franks says

Love the door basket idea for fall! I have one in my stash. Thanks for the reminder. I’m going to get it out and update it with a fresh floral arrangement!

  71. Penny Bohlen says

I have been hinting to my husband that I would like to change the door color.
Today I called him over and showed him the red door. Like Mikey, he liked it. Then he said he would do it plus the shutters, only two. I almost fell off my office chair. So thank you, thank you, thank you. This is an amazing turn of events.

    • I know you’ll love it, Penny! I love Benjamin Moore’s paint color called: Heritage Red. It’s only available in their Aura line which not all Benjamin Moore stores carry…so you may need to call around to see which BM stores in your area have it, if you do want to use that particular red. It’s from their Heritage line so they’ve been making it forever.

  72. Love the use of the purple. Really sets it all off in a subtle way. Very attractive.

I'd love to hear from you! Please leave a comment!
