A Cozy, Winter, Candlelit Table Setting

Welcome to the 852nd Tablescape Thursday! I started out planning to set a Valentine’s Day table, but as I worked on various ideas, I realized I was missing some of the things I needed. Where are those things? In Ohio. Argh!

I thought I had brought back all the things I would need for a Valentine’s Day table, but that was not the case. The white swirl chargers and the cream, lace/cut-work chargers that I so often use are all back at the Dollhouse. I have a dozen of each so I should bring 6 of each design back to Georgia for future table settings here. This is probably going to be an issue for a while until I work out a system for dealing with having dishes in two different places. I’m kinda glad I didn’t have the pieces I needed for a V-Day table because it set me in motion to create a cozy, candlelit, winter-themed table.Red Dining Room, Crystal Chandelier

Wintertime is the perfect time for dining surrounded by walls painted a warm, red. Now if this dining room only had a fireplace, it would be perfect. I took the time to iron the embroidered tablecloth I used for this table, although it doesn’t much look like it. I wish I had a really big ironing board for extra-long tablecloths like this one. This tablecloth is so long, I had to add a leaf to the table for it to work, otherwise the vintage tablecloth would have almost touched the floor on both ends. Even with a leaf in the table, I still tucked the ends under a bit so they wouldn’t rest on the chair seats. In the Dining Room for Tablescape Thursday

A view from the other side…Candlelight Winter Table Setting

This winter table has a bit of a deer theme. I love deer and often think about them during the winter months.Magnolia and Deer Centerpiece for Winter

I trimmed a few magnolia branches from the tree in the front yard, imaging the deer are passing through a snowy, forest and have come across a beautiful magnolia, its wide, low branches offering them a cozy spot to bed down for the night, protected under its big, beautiful green leaves from the wind and the falling snow.Winter Table with Magnolia Centerpiece

These whimsical deer salad plates are from Pier 1 many years ago and the pattern name is Alexander. Love the sweet birds resting on the deer’s beautiful, majestic antlers. The deep red/burgundy dinner plates are from Dollar Tree, if I’m remembering correctly. I’ve had them so long, hard to remember now.Deer Salad Plates for Winter Table Setting

Burgundy, velvet-trimmed linen napkins protect the delicate, embroidered napkins tucked inside. I love a touch of velvet for a winter table. Twig flatware beautifully echos the look of the antlers on the salad plates.Deer Napkin Ring with Silverplate Twig Flatware

Whenever I use this silverplate, twig flatware, I always place the knife in a vertical, upright position because it feels unstable and looks a bit awkward when lying flat. When flat, the knife also loses its twig appearance.Twig Flatware, Silverplate

Here’s how I prefer the placement of the knife for this twig flatware. The twig shape is much more visible this way and the knife feels more stable on the table. West Elm also carried this twig flatware in brown. I purchased the brown first and later bought this silverplate version. I’m so glad I did since I enjoy using both. I keep the silverplate set inside a special holloware bag so it never needs polishing. (Holloware bag is available here: Holloware Bag.) Silverplate Twig Flatware

Woodland Berry chargers from Pottery Barn work well for this winter tablescape.Woodland Berry Charger, Silverplate Twig Flatware

The stemware is by Noritake. The wine glass is in the pattern, Vendome Clear and the water/tea glass is in the pattern, Breeze.Noritake Stemware, Vendome Pattern Wine Glass

  1. LOVE this tablescape. I’m not ready to think Valentines anyway! The dishes and chargers are perfect together along with the twig flatware. My MIL used to have an ironing Mangle she did tablecloths on. I think they were more popular years ago when EVERYTHING needed ironing. Believe it or not they are still sold on Amazon but are $$$. Anyway…..happy winter!

  2. Beautiful table! I make table linens professionally so this is what I do at a customer’s home. You can buy heat resistant batting and grey ironing board fabric at JoAnns (before they close!). Buy several layers of the batting, the same length as your table. Lay the ironing board fabric on top of batting and iron your cloths on the table. When using the heat resistant batting, you will notice several strands of shiny silver on one side of the batting. This should always face up towards your iron and away from your table. Focuses the heat on the fabric. If I’m using steam I’ll place a sheet of vinyl (also available at JoAnns) on the table first.

  3. What a lovely table – the deer are darling. It must be tricky having your tableware in more than one place, and I’m curious to see what you’ll come up with – you’re always so creative! Thanks so much for hosting, and Happy Thursday!

    • Thanks, Barbara! It is! Definitely calls for some preplanning which I don’t always like since I often change my mind on what I want to do for a table.

  4. Table setting is beautiful but for me that table cloth is the star. It’s gorgeous is it a family heirloom?

    • No, I found it while antiquing many years ago. I really should do more of that, I found some beautiful pieces back when I was doing that a lot.

  5. This is such a a beautiful tablescape. You can’t beat using magnolia, deer, that flatware, and those lovely chargers.

    • Thanks so much, Nan! I love using natural greenery in a table whenever I can.
It won’t be long before the daffodils will start appearing.

  6. That’s a beautiful color palette for this time of year. (I still had magnolia stems and white candles on the table until just recently.) Always enjoy seeing the twig flatware; it’s so unusual.

    • Thanks so much, Mia! I wish I had my snowman plates here, another thing I forgot and left at the Dollhouse. I need to do a better job of remembering things to bring back.

  7. That worked out well. I love it. The chandelier is amazing, but I love that mirror and the cake plate with the cover. I hope you have a rider on your homeowners insurance for all the luxuries. Have you ever filmed everything for insurance purposes ? Everyone with collections need to take inventory and pictures.
Why not buy a steamer for linens and clothes ?
One of my best bargains was a brand new long white Damask tablecloth for $1.49 at GoodWill.

    • Thanks, Myrna! I have a steamer, but this tablecloth is huge so it would take forever and be difficult to steam the wrinkles out. That’s a great price, Myrna!

  8. Did I miss where the deer are from?

  9. I love this, Susan, it’s very wintry. What are your dinner plates? That’s a nice, rich deep red/burgundy color.

    • Thanks, Rita! I think I found those in Dollar Tree one year. I was specifically looking for deep red/burgundy plates and came across those there.

  10. Anna Uribe says

Love those chargers and salad plates. What a great table setting especially with the Deer in the center of the table. May I ask the name of the color red on your walls.

    • Sure! It’s Benjamin Moore’s Raspberry Truffle. I saw it in a home during a Christmas Historic Home Tour many years ago and absolutely loved it. It was in a small den with a roaring fireplace and I did not want to leave that room! I think the other tour-goers must have felt the same way because we all ended up in that one room and no one seemed to want move on with the tour. It felt so warm and welcoming, I still remember the feeling from when I first saw it in that cozy den.

  11. Beautiful table Susan! The vintage tablecloth is gorgeous and I love the idea of using the deer on the center. The deer plates from Pier 1 are so cute and everything looks so cozy in your lovely red dining room. Happy Thursday and stay warm!

  12. Sheryl Ramirez says

Susan, your table is beautiful and so perfect for this time of year!! I just love the deer salad plates! And the deer and magnolia in the center are perfect with your lovely setting! I have several beautiful antique tablecloths, but I find they’re so difficult to iron! You’re my hero for ironing that very large and beautiful cloth!! Thanks for sharing this winter tablescape!
    Sheryl

    • Thanks so much, Sheryl! I think the next time I iron a similar tablecloth, I need to go a bit slower. I had my iron on the linen setting, which is the hottest setting on my iron, but I was moving along pretty fast, maybe too fast. I love the feel of a linen tablecloth, though.

  13. Susan, your table us SO very lovely! Vintage cloths are to die for, and yours is just gorgeous! I can’t even begin to express how I miss Pier 1. I have so many dishes, napkins, napkin rings, flatware, placemats, decor items and so much more from Pier 1. Nowhere does a store have the unique items they sold. I am just sickened when I drive by my old Pier 1 store that now houses an Autozone! That is just blasphemy! Lol!

    • They really are! It’s hard to find the quality of the old linens when shopping today. I feel the same way, Martha! Every time I pass the location where the one I shopped at was located, I miss it so much! It was only about a mile from my home and I loved going there just to walk around and see what new they had in. I wish it would come back as physical stores again.

  14. Bettina Esser says

Your new place is lovely but the red dining room was one of my favorites of all time. Were you able to use the lamps and mirrors? Such a wonderful Winter Wonderland tablescape!

    • I kept my home in Georgia, so you’ll still see it when I set a table in the dining room here. There isn’t a great place for the Venetian-style mirror in the Dollhouse. If I ever move there fulltime, I will have to find a spot for it somewhere though, since I love it so much. Thanks so much, Bettina!

  15. I love a winter table, yours is beautiful! I too love deer, and the plates are so pretty! I lost you,I thoughtyou had moved to Ohio permantly. It is a pleasure to get back with you!

    • Thanks so much, Jacqueline! Oh, no…just bought a house there so I could be there more often throughout the year before my grandsons are all grown up. Jacqueline, are you subscribed to emails? If you like, you can subscribe here: Subscribe.
