A Decorating Quiz: What’s Your Style?

If you’ve been reading BNOTP for very long, you probably know I have a little decorating book addiction. A while back I ordered a book on eBay and just to be nice, the seller threw in an extra book for free. The extra book she included was Decorating Rich…subtitled…How to Achieve a Monied Look Without Spending a Fortune, by Teri Seidman and Sherry Suib Cohen. That subtitle grabs your attention, doesn’t it? 🙂

The foreword is written by Mario Buatta…and it is one of the better forewords that I’ve read. It really whets your appetite for what lies ahead in the book; but then, isn’t that what a good foreword is supposed to do? Mario Buatta briefly mentions the effect known as “puddling,” and I had to laugh when I read, “Nothing is worse than curtains that just miss the floor, looking as though they shrank in a flood.” 🙂

Not too far along into the book, specifically beginning on page 10, there’s a neat little “decorating quiz” that the author states will give “clues to the textures, colors and accessories to which we are really drawn.” She says, “They include the architectural lines you most admire, the era in which your soul really lives and the essence of the decorating signature with which you’ll probably be most comfortable.”

There are twenty-one fun questions…what say we take it? Remember, there are no right or wrong answers…it’s not that kind of quiz. 🙂 After you finish, I’d love for you to leave a comment telling me your decorating style and if you thought the quiz hit the mark for you. This book was written quite a few years ago, so you’ll notice the t.v. show question is a bit dated…but it’s still a fun and informative quiz. 🙂

And now for the analysis, taken verbatim from Decorating Rich. (All photos are from the back cover of Decorating Rich, as well.)

Did you choose mostly As?
The essential you is tailor-made for European Opulence. A traditional, comfortable-yet-formal home is more to your taste than any other signature. Your heart is caught in the look of the fabulous past.

Did you choose mostly Bs?
You’re a child of the future, an admirer of modern technology; Classic Contemporary is your sleek, svelte signature.

Did you choose mostly Cs?
Serenely magnificent Oriental Grace is the signature that is most exciting for you. You could go, as well, for a Rich-Mix…any of the other signatures accented heavily with Chinese luxury or Japanese simplicity.

Did you choose mostly Ds?
I would think that American Pedigree would please you enormously. You admire the classicism of our heritage, the integrity of dark, deep woods, the comfort of a deep wing chair.

Did you choose mostly Es?
Country Charm is your kind of posh. The charm of the hearth, the hunt, and naive art make you smile. The richness of the sea or the sun-bleached character of the Southwest are your cup of tea.

Did your choices/answers add up as you expected? Did you learn anything new about yourself and your decorating style? What is your style? 🙂

  1. I'm most definitely American Pedigree. What a fun quiz and pretty darn accurate too. Thanks for sharing it.

    Sallie

  2. Lynne (lynnesgiftsfromtheheart) says

Susan, this was the most interesting post. Bailey is here and even took the test with me and told me which ones he thought I was. As it turns out it says I'm European Oplulence. It's pretty close to being accurate. This was alot of fun.. I'm wondering what it says about you.. Going back to read them all again. hugs ~lynne~

  3. Anonymous says

This WAS a fun quiz to take and pretty accurate too. I'm Country Charm/European Opulence. In one respect they seem far apart but in another, they are similar….both love the old, worn things of character. So maybe I'm "Country Opulence":o) ……I like a home that is casual and yet has items that are personally chosen that speak of places, people or usefulness in another era. And, as I look around my home….that is exactly what I have, an eclectic home….things that "speak to me" somehow or have a memory connected to them. The greatest compliment is when someone says, "Where did you get that?" Then I get to share the story! Thanks for this fun post Susan. Toni

  4. No surprise- European opulence on an American beer and peanuts budget! Very interesting!

  5. Hi Susan! Oh, this was fun! I was mostly Es. I guess I've never considered myself that countrish, but I learn new things every day!
    Be sweetie,
    Shelia 🙂

  6. E's for me…no surprise here. Thanks..that was fun!

    Lynne

  7. This was a fun quiz, but I don't think of myself as European Opulence, I like it, I think it has it's place, but just not in my home. It's a little too over-the-top and pristine for my taste.
I took another decorating quiz once and it labeled my taste as 'Bohemian Eclectic' and I think that hit the nail on the head!

    Fun post!
    All the best,
    Eileen

  8. The Barnett Family says

Well, I was mostly Country Charm, but I think I am more European Opulence. It was pretty close in numbers. I always say that I come from a beer family with champagne taste….hehe! Some of the questions I could go either way…had to chose an answer. Thanks for the little quiz…would love to know your outcome! 🙂

    Tonya

  9. Melissa Miller says

I chose 14 letter "A"'s. That was more than I thought I would pick but it seems accuarate. This was fun. 🙂

  10. squawmama says

Susan, This was FUN, FUN, FUN… I was a mix between American Pedigree and Country Charm… and it was right… I am!

    Have a great day

    (((HUGS)))

  11. Lindsay@ THAT'S SO CUEGLY says

    B's and C's

Mostly C's and I HAD an oriental themed living room until my husband put his foot down after I put a large glass vase of "fortune telling cookies" by the door.

Now my living room is just comtemperary.
    Thanks for the quiz!

  12. imjacobsmom says

Hi Susan, This was fun, i'm a mix of American Pedigree and Country Charm! ~ Robyn

  13. Sharing with Sherri says

    Okay I had….9-A's and 6-E's

I figured I fall more into the Country Charm category.

I really do love European Opulance though, it's just that Country Charm is much more affordable unfortunately!

Great Post Susan! I love quizzes like this!

  14. Ldy ~~ Dy says

Mostly A's..European Opulence. I tend to agree…but I also love the touch of Country charm. That was my next highest! Fun post!! Hugs!

  15. Victoria@WhimsybyVictoria says

It was almost a tie between A and E. I agree that I am a mix of both. That is a fun post!

    Hugs to you,
    ~Victoria~

  16. Princess Of Pink says

ostly E's with A's as a far second. I adore and have my home decorated in the Shabby Chic style. So maybe E is closest to me. But am more a white/pink girl, lol

    Fun though

  17. Hi from the UK. I had 9 A's and 6 E's which I suppose is to be expected from a Brit!! Country charm and homely is how I like it.

    http://jackieslifeinsurrey-1.blogspot.com/

Have a good weekend everyone, we have some lovely sunshine at last here!!;-)

    Jackie.

  18. Hello Dearheart…

Ohh…what a fun quiz! I scored 9-A's…and 6-E's. Wow…I found this to be right on the money! Hehe! As I was looking at the design style photos…my favorites were the European Opulence and the Country Charm…true to form! It's funny…I had absolutely no B's…and when I looked at that design style photo…I can see why! Hehe!

Thank you for sharing the book and this fun little quiz…enjoyed it!

    Love ya,
    Chari

  19. Very fun quiz. And not to my surprise I'm almost evenly divided between European Opulence and country charm… That makes for some weird moments in life… I think I need TWO homes, don't you? Thanks…

  20. SmilingSally says

Interesting. I don't think any really "fit" me. LOL

  21. That was fun — I'm European Opulence/American Pedigree. And that is Linderhof! Fun post.

  22. Kathy @ Creative Home Expressions says

I chose mostly "E", though it was close with "A". I guess I could do a Charmingly Opulent Country European look! I did like elements in both pictures.

  23. Tricia Anne says

    Good Morning Susan,
That was a fun test. Thank you for sharing with us! Yes, I choose nearly all of the letter "e" and the design that best describes me is in fact country charm. :o)
I hope that you have a nice weekend!
    Sincerely ~ Tricia Anne

  24. Penny @ The Comforts of Home/Lavender Hill Studio says

    I was mostly Country Charm….

  25. Love to decorate says

Loved the post. I am mainly country.
    Marge

  26. Cass @ That Old House says

Holy smokes, I think I learned that I don't HAVE a decorating style. I chose As, Bs, Ds and Es about equally! (No Cs though.)

Maybe I need treatment for my split personality — should I find a psychiatrist and lie down on the couch for analysis? OH NO! What style of couch? Camelback? Lawson? Chesterfield?

    What fun! Thanks — Cass

  27. An E all the way, no surprise…
    ritad

  28. I had 6 in the American Pedigree and 6 in the County Charm which I like elements of both, so it was pretty much dead on for me!…..Jo

  29. I am definitely an "A" girl,Susan, a traditional European opulence. What are you?

  30. Juggling Thoughts says

Country Charm, of course! It speaks for itself, there is so much character in a southern decor. This is a great depiction of that style!

  31. I think I am comfortable in many styles…I appear to be very even between three….that must be why I can't make a quick definite decision when I decorate!

  32. Suzann @ Lavender and Roses says

My answers were scattered, but I had more E's than the other letters. I'm not surprised because I tend to be very ecclectic.

  33. Susan, what a fun quiz for a Saturday morning! I didn't fall into one category, but European Opulence and Country Charm were just about even, with European Opulence one point ahead. I'm not surprised. My tastes are fairly eclectic. I'm drawn to things with character that have the patina of age, beautiful fine art, and textiles with texture. But I also appreciate naive art and a bit of whimsy. Whimsical touches are an important part of the mix for me. Someone recently commented that our home is a mix of layers that reflect what we love and where we've traveled. My dream would be to own multiple homes and make each one a different style. What did you learn about your style? Happy Saturday! Hugs~ Sarah

  34. Sharlotte says

    Hi Susan,
Thanks for posting this quiz…I didn't follow the directions exactly and wrote down one OR more answers that I liked. I'm a mixture of European Opulence and Country Charm. I think it fits!
    Enjoy your weekend!

  35. Yep I am an E….knew I loved charm and cottages but A was a close second and I am not surprised. Fun!

  36. This quiz really is fun!! No surprises here. Almost all A's. The moat answer made me laugh. Its true. I want one. haha But, I had to go with the collie. They are just so pretty!

  37. Dana and Daisy says

MIne was mostly E's which a few times I did not pick E when I was undecisive.

I think it is pretty accurate, but I like a more modern adaptation of country than the picture shows. Which might be a clue since my second most frequent answer was B, classic contemporary.

thanks for sharing this with us Pat, it was really fun!

  38. This was fun…thanks for posting it! I had 8 a's and 7 e's with NO c's!

  39. I actually own a copy of that book. Bought it 20 years ago at the suggestion of a friend when I built my first house. I can't remember what I was as the time, but before taking the quiz this time, I would have said that my taste is ecclectic. Sure enough, the quiz proved that to be true. I picked 7 A's, 6 D's, 7 E's, only 1 B and no C's. So I like a mixture of European, Early American and Country, which is exactly what I have in my house. Thanks for reminding me of that book.

  40. Hi Susan
The test says I am European Opulence. That's definitely not me! Oh well.

  41. country charm – an 8 – sorta kinda knew that anyway. i do love your

  42. 9405018--Pat says

Hi Susan, This was fun…I'm American Pedigree this is pretty accurate too…thanks for sharing…Pat H

  43. Mostly E's, which wasn't too much of a surprise especially when I read in the discription "the richness of the sea". Yep..that was right on! A cottage by the sea and you would have me!! Thanks, Susan, that was fun. But you didn't share your results!

  44. Cathy Miller says

I have that book!! I bought it a few years ago at our local libray's used book sale for a dollar or two. I always thought it was hysterical that I answered mostly A's but my house looks like mostly E's…and I like my house!!

  45. Michelle DiDomenico says

Country Charm, and thats 100% accurate! Very Fun Thanks! Michelle

  46. mbkatc230 says

This was a fun quiz. I wasn't terribly surprised, all B's and E's with an A thrown in for good measure. I guess I'm a bit schizophrenic decorating wise! Kathy

  47. Hi, Susan,
Fun post. I was not surprised to find I was "Country Charm"; however, I did like the coziness of the "European Opulence"

    D

  48. I am so Country Charm but I could have told you that just from looking at the pictures.

  49. Even though my home doesn't really look it, I am a E.O. gal. that's where I live in my dreams. I thought I had this book but can't put my hands on it at the moment…too much opulence around here 😉

  50. Cottage Lifestyle says

    Country Charm for me.

  51. Teresa @ Grammy Girlfriend says

that was fun….though I had all different letters, I had more that would lead me to European Oplulence and American Pedigree

  52. Faith Imagined says

This is a neat quiz though I don't know how to answer any of the questions. I would just prefer someone like you making my house look nice without having to make any decisions!!! Haha!!! BTW, I am giving away 3 Amazon gift certificates at my place to celebrate my first online published devo! YAY!!!

  53. Interesting! I am a classic contemporary and country…Basically I like clean lined comfort, but not fussiness. Too much clutter drives me insane! I have been called a "bohemian eclectic", a complete mishmash (my husband) and many other things. Perhaps that's why I have a need to change my house all the time…from rearranging furniture to changing the artwork and colors. Thankfully I have neutral covered sofas and chairs.

  54. Susan, oh so much fun, thanks for posting this for us 'fans'!! 12 E's for me….'country charm' all the way…hugs, Valerie up in Manitoba, Canada xo

  55. Room Service ~ Decorating 101 says

I was mostly E's and it was so right! Fun! Thanks

  56. This was fun. It turns out I am a mix of American pedigree and European opulence…. go figure. I do love things about both of these styles, it's true.

    Thanks.

  57. This was a fun quiz Susan! It actually confirmed what I already knew about myself, that I'm not tied into any one style. I would say it was pretty accurate.

  58. Kathryn @ Bonafide Southern says

What a fun quiz. According to this little test, I'm a cross between European Oppulence and Country Charm. It was a tie between those two. I'd love to know which one matched you.

  59. Thanks for this fun time, Susan.
There is no doubt that I was almost ALL E'S and it hit the nail on the head. I LOVE beachy, whites, some country but not braided rugs and churn type country..I always thought of myself as Traditional but there wasn't one for that…:O)

  60. WOW That was fun! I got mostly A's with some E's thrown in for good measure! I'm really surprised at how many others got that as well. I would have never thought those two would go together, but thinking about it I can see it. Like others I sure wish I had a beach house to decorate beachy and country and have my house with old world rich colors and antiques. A girl can dream!

    Buh-bye for now!

  61. I'm almost all E's – and I'd live in that room in a moment. Still looks timeless and comfortable and lived in. Love it! Fun quizz.

  62. Susan, This was interesting. I find I am in the American Pedigree group. This was fun.

  63. I was mostly E's with A's coming in second. I would agree that I'm very cottagey with some european opulence thrown in. This was a fun quiz! Thanks Miss Bloomers

  64. Enchanted Rose Studio says

Such a fun quiz, Susan. I got 9 A's and 7 E's. Which translates to eclectic. ha! No surprise at all. What was your style?

    Tina

  65. Cheri Peoples says

I came out mostly with E's but I was all over the board with answers in every category and eclectic is definitely my style. This was fun.

Sorry-I've been out of commission — terribly sick for over a week– but do you want to know how I cut my grocery bill in half? go to Cut your grocery bills now plus I have a give a way and a new Mr Linky party starting tomorrow but Mr Linky will be up by 8 p.m. tonight

    Cheri
    Its So Very Cheri

  66. laurie @ bargain hunting says

Susan, that was fun. I ended up being Country, but the photo of American Pedigree appealed to me more, and that's what I kind of think I lean toward. Fun post. laurie

  67. I am mostly, no surpise E's. I do love the a's too! Cindy

  68. It was a tie between American Pedigree and Country. This is exactly my taste. That was fun! ginny

  69. Hi Susan,
Could you add me to Met. Monday tonight? I don't know if I can find an Internet connection. http://applestonecottage.blogspot.com/ Thank-you, Cindy

  70. Dana and Daisy says

I just realized I was confused yesterday Susan, and I called you Pat. Your blogs and homes are both so pleasant and have "Porch" in the title. Please forgive me! And thank you SUSAN, for posting this! lol!

  71. Love Bears All Things says

    Country Charm
    Yes, that's me.
    Mama Bear

  72. Hi,

This is my first time to post here. I took the test and found out what I am NOT, more than what I am !! I had 5 A's, 4 B's, 1 C, 5 D's and 6 E's.

I am like your poster Laurie though, after the test was over, and I looked at the pics, E didn't appeal to me as much as D !!

God help the interior decorator the day I have enough money to hire one !!

    Truly love your site.

    Cece in Atlanta

  73. Abcdebbie says

Susan, this was so much fun and a great idea.

  74. Frugal Fine Living says

What a fun quiz! I was mostly A's with a few E's thrown in … so, European Opulence with a bit of Country Charm. Maybe that's why I love French Country so much.

    Jane

  75. ~Country Lady~ says

This is a fun post. I am into European Opulence with American Pedigree one behind. This really does describe me. Very interesting! Thanks for sharing this with us.

  76. Cheri Peoples says

I have been terribly ill this past week and am trying to get Mr Linky up for my party. If you are on line could you e-mail me–I am staying close to my computer.

    [email protected]

    Thank you
My first question is do I need to share the meme? but there are more beyond that one.

  77. Pearl Maple says

Too funny but I think they did get it right, I am half European Opulence and half Country Charm, which all makes sense having lived half my life in Europe and half in the US/Australian countryside.

    That was fun!

  78. Envoy-ette says

I'm A's. My house has been described as International Traditional. I think this test was on the money!

  79. The Tablescaper says

What a coincidence! I JUST got that book in the mail. I wish it had more pictures but it is an intersting read. Fun post.
    – The Tablescaper

  80. Southern Fried Gal says

Love it! Most of my points fell in either D's or E's with just one point difference. Totally confirms my ecclectic taste. For some off reason I am drawn to both formal and casual styles. When I look around my home I think I do a decent job of blending the two. Thanks for putting this up – so fun!

  81. Laura Ingalls Gunn says

    I was an "A" with an "E" running a close second. 🙂

  82. Hi Susan,
    Your blog is a joy!
My home is a cross between European Elegance and Country Charm, with a side order of shabby chic.
I have only posted my garden so far, next will be the interiors of my studio and home.
    How much fun is blogging???
    Wx

  83. Mid-Atlantic Martha says

I was American, European with almost the same in Country – I guess that means I'm all mixed up!

  84. I am definitely European Opulence… too bad I can't afford my own taste!! ;0) Maybe when the kids move out…. even then.. they should have had a category for decorating with your children's art. Better than any Van Gogh…. ;0)

  85. A's for me.

  86. Wow Susan this was a fun quiz even though I am a bit late with it and who would have known my style is country.

  87. Shannon @ Silver Trappings says

I've checked out that book from my library a couple of times and loved it. I am European Opulence.

And I totally get how excited you are about Mary Carol Garrity's new book. I have also already ordered mine. I went to her open house last fall and got to see her house in person. It was just about the best day of my life!

  88. Life on Bonnie Lane says

I was E, Country Charm, which was no surprise to me, but I was a little surprised that secondly, I was A, European Opulence.

    Fun quiz!

    Kady

  89. Graceful Moments says

I've often said that I need at least three houses to design and decorate because I like so many different styles. I am definitely an eclectic. My scores placed me as primarily an American Pedigree with large and equal dashes of European Opulence and Country Charm. I would have to say that this is true. I would call it traditional with a love of classic and fine details but with a casual feel.
This was really fun! Thanks for posting it.

  90. Lady Katherine says

What fun! I an A for my parlor and master bedroom. Oh, but I am an E that is Country from my head to my toes!

  91. Every time I take a decorating quiz, I tend to come out "eclectic." I came out a three-way tie for European Opulence, American Pedigree, and Country Charm. And that totally fits me to a T. I like a little of it all – except modern and Asian styles, of course.

  92. gracielynn's says

almost correct.. the first question should have given the choice:
sit in my fav recliner, knit & listen to podcasts :_)

  93. I have the worst decorating sense ever. My husband is even better. And Just as I figured. I was all over the place. I had a few in every category! Not one earned a majority! Help and I am redoing the kitchen and livingroom soon.

  94. I’m Country Charm with a bit of European Opulence (my second highest) which makes sense as my home is a mix of casual charm and old world opulence…..lots of antiques, touches of silver, a mix of floral fabrics, plants everywhere…..but the opulence is tempered so the overall feel is more casual. It all has a rather eclectic look as my home is a reflection of things collected over time.

I'd love to hear from you! Please leave a comment!
