Welcome to the 540th Tablescape Thursday!
Recently Sandra, a lovely BNOTP reader, shared some wonderful pictures she had taken of a table setting she created for a dinner party to celebrate the Chinese New Year. This year, the Chinese New Year occurred on Tuesday, February 5th.
Per Wikipedia, the Chinese New Year, also known as the Lunar New Year, is the Chinese festival that celebrates the beginning of a new year on the traditional Chinese calendar. Based on the Chinese Zodiac, 2019 is the year of the pig.
Sandra wrote, “I’m hosting a Mahjong party tomorrow to celebrate the year of the pig. Mahjong is a Chinese tile game played with tiles.” Echoing the Mahjong tiles, Sandra scattered pretty tiles throughout her table setting. The large placards scattered down the center of the table represent wishes for wealth, health, fortune, wisdom, and happiness. We all would wish for that, wouldn’t we?
Sandra said, “The cherry blossom branches engineered thru the chandelier…
…mimic the cherry blossoms in the dessert plate on top of each place setting.”
Sandra found her gold chargers in Michaels many years ago. The red striped dinner plates & red wine glasses are from Tuesday Morning years ago. The decorative plate on top is actually a paper plate. It really works well with this themed tablescape.
The menu for this Chinese New Years celebration included Egg Drop Soup, Fried Rice and Sweet & Sour Chicken.
Sandra chose horseshoe napkin rings as a symbol of good luck since they would all be playing Mahjong after dinner. The bamboo flatware is perfect in this setting. Love the golden color against the red tablecloth.
For dessert, Sandra served Red Velvet Cupcakes with a cream cheese icing, topped off with a fortune cookie.
Such a beautiful centerpiece!
Thanks so much to Sandra for sharing this beautiful table setting featuring a colorful Chinese New Year theme. Sandra really carried out the theme so well in this stunning tablescape!

If you are participating in Tablescape Thursday, please be sure to add your permalink below, and not your general blog address. To get your permalink, click on your post name, then copy and paste the address showing in the address bar, into the “url” box when you link up.
You’ll need to include a link in your post back to the party to link up and participate. That’s so visitors to your blog will be able to find the party and the other Tablescape Thursday participants. Requiring a link back also prevents businesses and scammers from linking up to sell their products. (Yup, that really happens, unfortunately.)
I love the mixture of plates; the central paper plate is a marvellous way to celebrate an occasion without breaking the bank. Genius!
I love this Chinese New Year’s table! The red and gold colors are just great. Everything Sandra used was perfect for her theme: the plates, flowers, flatware, centerpiece, etc. Sandra did a great job with a tablescape theme I’ve never seen before.
Susan, thanks for another great Tablescape Thursday!
Gorgeous tablescape! I would love to know where Sandra got her Chinese people figurines.
Sydney, I just asked Sandra via email and she said she found those in an antique store. That’s also where her centerpiece bowl came from.
Thank you so much for checking.
I love the figurines too. Awesome table.
Sandra set a festive tone for the evening! I particularly like the cherry blossoms in the chandelier. I have never seen horseshoe napkin rings, I like those. What a nice way to greet your friends and set a fun tone for the evening. Thanks for sharing, Sandra. I hope you all had a good time.
What a fun table Sandra shared, the cherry blossoms and Mah jong tiles are fabulous! And the fortune cookie cupcake! Cute, thanks Susan!
Beautiful table for the Chinese New Year. We just had a lot of fun with it at Disneyland this past week! I took pictures of all of the little one’s birthdays to tell them what the animal was the year they were born – of course each of the animals is a Disney character so that makes it even more fun!
This is a fabulous way to celebrate the Chinese new year! The reds are so striking and the bamboo flatware is perfect. And the figurines are lovely as well. Thanks for sharing!
Fun table! I play Mah Jongg every week. I wish I had thought about hosting a MJ party for Chinese New Year. I need to remember this. Happy Chinese New Year to you!
Great New Year’s table. Chinese red is such a rich red. Love it in my home. Scattering the Mah Jong tiles around the table is a clever (scary) idea. I’d go bonkers if I lost one or a few in the clean up.
The statues are readily available on eBay. Much cheaper than antiques stores who sell mostly reproductions anyway.
I know. I bought some.
This is a fabulous idea! I love the bright colors and would love to learn to play mahjong! Thanks for sharing, Susan!
Sandra pulled everything together so well for this theme. Those red striped plates–you must have fun with those year-round. And the fortune cookie on the cupcake was the perfect fun, final touch.
Well done Sandra! Such a great, colorful table, love the figurines and the centerpiece. This makes me hungry for good Chinese food! Thanks Susan, another great tablescape for future reference!
what a fun party! every year I say I want to have a Chinese new year dinner party but every year it comes & goes before I can get organized. next year…..xo- maryjo
I love the details she put together. Hanging the branch of cherry blossoms was a perfect accent. Love the dish stack she put together and the large placecards. That had to be a fun party to attend! So glad she shared it with you and us!
Beautiful table! The red-striped plates remind me so much of “Carnivale” by Noritake! Also love the choice of the bamboo flatware – it’s perfect for this table! Thank you, Susan, for always hosting such a wonderful link-up! I enjoy sharing my own tables and being inspired by everyone who shares!
