Beautiful, Whimsical Wallpaper For My Guest Bath & Mini-Mudroom

Welcome to the 846th Metamorphosis Monday! Thanks for all your awesome input yesterday regarding the baskets for the filing cabinet console I recently added to my office. I had to agree with those who left comments saying that neither the 3-basket or the 4-basket option worked well since the 4-basket looked crowded and the 3-basket option looked awkward. I have removed all the baskets for now, so it’s back to being completely open. I plan to bring up more books on my next trip to the Dollhouse, and I’ll try those on the bottom shelf to see how that works. I don’t want anything decorative on that lower shelf because I know that area is probably going to need frequent dusting since it’s so low to the ground. Books may end up being the best option—I’ll keep you posted on that.Pretty File Cabinet, Home Office

A few BNOTP readers mentioned having the registers/vents painted. I asked an HVAC guy about that several months ago, and he recommended having them professionally done by a company that could professionally remove the existing brown paint, then powder-coat them with a professional-grade paint, like something they would use for cars. I believe the paneling in this room was originally stained, based on the 1951 blueprints I found for this addition, so dark brown registers would have made sense back in the day. Having the registers professionally painted is on my very long to-do list, right behind having the roof cleaned, the house washed, and the driveway and patio pavers cleaned and re-sanded with polymeric sand.Pretty File Cabinet, Home Office

FYI, if you are interested in Buffalo plaid drapes/curtains for a room in your home, I ordered these in the “Chambry” color to see how they would look in the office.  The color was pretty much a perfect match with the office walls, but the check pattern was a little too large with my existing rug. I still love my office rug, so I don’t have any plans to change it, but I would def be open to using these Buffalo check drapes in another room of this home at some point. I was really impressed with the weight and how they looked. They are 10% linen and have a lot of heft/body, so they look a lot more expensive than they are. I wish I had thought to take a photo of how the panels looked before I returned them. If you are looking for affordable Buffalo check curtains for a room in your home, you’ll find these available in 6 colors and 3 sizes/lengths here: Buffalo Check Curtains.

One of the projects I would love to get done this summer is to have wallpaper installed in the guest bath that’s located on the main level of the Dollhouse. In this photo from the real estate listing, you can see that this room is very small.

I’m not crazy about red walls, plus the paint is in rough shape in some areas of the room. Not sure if I’ll have wallpaper installed just above the molding, or if I’ll have it installed above and below. I’m leaning toward above and below right now. One thing I do know is I don’t want to go with a small print or a wimpy color scheme/design. I want to go big and bold with something that feels elegant and maybe a little unexpected. I’ve ordered a few wallpaper samples to try in this space.Basket for Toilet Paper Storage in Small Bathroom

The other room I’m seriously considering adding wallpaper to is this very small “mudroom” that leads out to the garage and down to the basement.

I brought up a bunch of my spring raincoats during this last trip to the Dollhouse. The walls are currently painted a light brownish color, kinda the color of coffee with a lot of cream added.Coats in Mudroom

Okay, let’s look at some fun wallpapers! The first few wallpapers I’m sharing are NOT designs that I’m seriously thinking of using, but I wanted to share them because they are so fanciful and cute! I wish I had the right spot to use this adorable cat topiary paper. If I had a proper garden/potting room, I would have to use this paper on its walls! I wonder how it would look in my laundry room in Georgia. Ha! It’s just so adorable and fun! If you love it, you’ll find it available here: Cat Topiaries Wallpaper.

Here’s another fun paper that I would be tempted to use if I had the right room for it. Again, this isn’t a wallpaper I’m considering, but it was too cute not to share. You’ll find it available here: Chinoiserie Topiary Wallpaper.

Another delightful paper that I’m not planning on using. There’s a beautiful dining room out there somewhere that needs this paper, though! You’ll find it available here: English Landscape Wallpaper.

Okay, how about some wallpaper designs that I am considering using in the Dollhouse guest bath and tiny mudroom! I thought this design could possibly work in my tiny mudroom, especially if I redo the lighting so the room is much brighter. You’ll find this topiary paper available here: Spring Topiaries Wallpaper.

I also really like this one with topiaries, bunnies, and birds.

Wonder how this paper would look in my laundry room in Georgia. Such a pretty paper! You’ll find it available here: Bunnies and Birds Topiary Wallpaper.

As mentioned earlier, I want to go bold in my small guest bath. I want guests to feel enveloped in a fantasy garden of flowers and birds. This Scalamandre paper is so pretty! It’s available here: Scalamandre Garden Wallpaper.

Another one that I’m considering…you’ll find it available here: Birds and Fruit Floral Wallpaper.

Are you seeing a theme? I do love the wallpaper patterns that include flowers and birds. This one is available here: Bird, Fruit, Floral Wallpaper.

Sooo pretty! This one is available here: Bird Floral Wallpaper.

Another bold, beautiful design! This one is available here: Bird, Floral Wallpaper.

Love this tropical design!

This would be great in a potting room. Wonder how it would look in my guest bath. You’ll find it available here: Tropical Wallpaper.

This one feels a little exotic—love that! It’s one I’m considering for my guest bath. You’ll find it available here: Harrison Howard Night in India. Do you have a favorite wallpaper from the designs that I’ve shared? I love the idea of wallpaper in smaller rooms since it’s not such a big commitment if you wish to change it out later. Let me know your favorite and if you would use it in my guest bath or my tiny mudroom!

  1. Hands down, Night in India. The cheetah had me the moment I saw her!

  2. My 2 cents on painting your register covers – you don’t need to have it done professionally! I painted quite a few in my last house, which was built in 1960. This method will work really well, especially since yours are on the wall. They need a good wash, then a spray on primer for metal, followed by a spray on top coat. You can easily find these paints at big box stores. Quicker, cheaper and very durable. Good luck with whatever you decide and whenever you do them.

  3. I love the Scalamandre Garden paper, but the Night in India paper is just too cute! It would create the most delightful and charming guest bathroom!

  4. Hi Susan,
I would go with something whimsical for the bathroom. People are just in and out. I think it’s fun to go to another’s house, have to use the bathroom, and find it to be whimsical and fun. It’s much more unexpected, and tells you more about the owner. Just my thought,
    Annie

Oh, oh…the “Wallpaper flu” has reached you…too…
Mine just arrived from the “Painted Paper Company!!” Always I have wanted a mural (plus, I just like saying, “how’s the murel, Merle??” The tv area is the spot…just the top of wainscote, the bottom is an “eeekkk” gorgeous antique bronze w/metallic paint. We wallpapered hot air balloons in our cubby water closet 17 years ago (after our ride!) & love it still. Cant’t wait to see yours!!! franki

  6. Love the Scalamandre for your guest bath. It is beautiful and picks up the blue form other rooms.

LOL – I have a sample of that english landscape wallpaper – and I am trying to find a suitable place — I just wallpapered the dining room in red and gold “thistle” from Morris – so – the dining room is not where I can put it – I do wonder about a little alcove I have in the Living Room. ….

Beautiful selection – Thank you for sharing

  8. Take a look at Danika Herrick wallpaper called Elsie’s garden. It’s a great choice for a cottage and in my opinion goes well with your aesthetic. It comes in 24 color stories and in several application types. I think the design is timeless rather than trendy.

  9. My favorite wallpaper is the tropical themed one; it would be so unexpected in Ohio!

  10. Good morning!
Absolutely love the Scalamandre Garden paper!! So glad wallpaper is making a comeback. It adds so much to a room.

  11. Karen Lovell says

Glad you chose to not use any of the baskets. I hope you find a little bit bigger ones. A place folks don’t think of for baskets but where I have found some is Lowe’s. The wallpapers are a lot for me to consider. I know you’ll make the right choice. Some of the wallpaper I like is used by Erin Napier on HGTV (can’t remember name of show – maybe Hometown) – from Mississippi. Maybe you can search that out.

  12. Beautiful idea and your choice will be easy since you cannot go wrong! The Scalamandre or the Night in India are my favorite. Your tiny powder room will be a jewel box. Isn’t it true one thing leads to another and you have a project in the doll house to bring you lots of joy.

  13. Nancy Brantley says

Whimsical is the way to go. But I don’t like fruit or topiary paper in bathroom or mudroom. I would use these in a dining or sunroom. Just my opinion.

  14. Tamara Nelson says

    love night in india

  15. Night in India is my fave! Gorgeous!
But, don’t be surprised if your visitors start flocking to the guest bath!

  16. Carol Case says

My vote is for the bird with oranges on the blue background.

  17. I like Bridgittes idea to paint the covers. You could do that for the time being until you get through the long list, or you might be happy with them painted and save the expense.

  18. I like the Seal. Garden one think of all the color choices you have to decorate with. I wouldn’t want the last one as I would hate to have to cut the cat in order to stop a panel at some point. ( you know what I mean). Just remember the saying from the Indiana Jones movie..the Last Crusade….when you decided on one paper over the other…. Choose Wisely. haha

  19. Register covers – can you just replace them with white ones?

    • They are such a strange size, not sure I could find the correct king. I like the idea of having them painted since they are the original vents from 1938, so would like to keep them if possible.

  20. Love all the wallpapers you’re looking at. so fun. Thanks for having us over and Happy Easter Week.

  21. I wouldn’t even have to think about my choice if I were choosing one of these-most definitely Night in India. I love it! I went very bold in my powder room. The paper has large peonies and birds perched on branches. Dark blush is the background color. The vanity is painted a sage green from the paper, with ornate hardware. I love it every time I walk by it. Yours is a perfect size for boldness, and Night in India will look so beautiful with a touch of Chinoiserie!

  22. Hi Susan. I read and love all your emails but don’t write often.
I love all the wallpapers you show on here and would have a hard time picking just one. Any of the bird and blooms would be good choices, depending on the colors you want to be dominate. But like some others, I lean toward Night in India because it’s so unusual and exotic.
    Phyllisa

  23. You show a lot of very pretty papers and are sure to pick a great one. I would suggest that you not pick one with food for the guest bath, like the two papers with fruit. The thought of food and toilet would not seem a good choice.

  24. I absolutely LOVE Night in India.

  25. I’m so excited for you! I love so many of these, but if I had to choose a favorite it would be a tie between the Scalamandre Garden one and the Night in India! Tough choice, but really – these are all so beautiful you can’t go wrong!

  26. Michele M. says

Hi Susan – def get at least the office registers painted – maybe even just steel brush them for now, use a good base coat then Rustoleum spray paint so you don’t notice them with your new file desk. Just to get by till you get it professionally done. As for whimsy in the guest bath – I highly recommend painting below the chair rail and doing wallpaper above. Otherwise it will just be way too much with those wallpapers. Only go floor to ceiling with a more mellow paper. Don’t completely overwhelm the space. (imho) My fav is the light blue birds, fruit and floral and my next fav is bunnies and topiaries. And I loved those baskets for under your new filing cab!

  27. Thanks so much for hosting!! I really appreciate the time and effort that goes into it along with visiting all the links!! I hope you are enjoying your week and you are doing well…

  28. Oh boy, another opinion poll. Haha. I hope you’re ready for this, lol.

For the guest bath, I vote for the Harrison Howard Night in India (so fun!) or the Birds with the Oranges or the Chinoiserie Birds. (I really narrowed it down for ya.)

For the mudroom, I’d go with the cats because you obviously love it and it’s very whimsical and cute.

My two cents. Have fun looking. I’ve been yearning for wallpaper recently, myself. Hmm.

  29. Love so many of the wallpapers! The Scalamandre is my FAVORITE for your powder room! And I think the Spring Topiaries would be perfect in your cute, little mudroom! I love every one of the bird/floral papers!

  30. Curious about that little white door on the wall above the toilet. Is it providing pipe access? Will you wallpaper over it or accent it?

  31. G. Simpson says

I vote for Scalamandre Garden. It would look beautiful!

  32. I would choose the Scalamandre Garden for your bath. It is perfect!

  33. Linda Gurganus says

You have some hard decisions to make!!! I love all of the birds and fruit designs. The India design is amazing!! Good job!

  34. My pick for your guest bathroom would be the blue background with the birds and magnolias, it would pick up the blue from your other rooms and the magnolias remind me of Georgia back home.
I think any of the topiary papers would be adorable in the mud room!

  35. I LOVE that last wallpaper! Go for it!

  36. Becky Gupton says

Scalamandre Garden for your mushroom and Night in India for your guest bath

  37. Becky Gupton says

Scalamandre Garden for your mud room, silly auto correct!

  38. If you go with night in india, you have to get this puzzle–https://www.springbok-puzzles.com/cheetah-and-ginger-jar-500-piece-jigsaw-puzzle/ It’s perfect for framing, don’t you think?

  39. All are beautiful, but the cheetah would be my choice, I love all cats!

  40. Scalamandre Garden for sure! I do think you want to think about your overall color scheme you plan to use so that whatever you choose won’t fight with other rooms in the house. Just my 2 cents. Or a paper with birds being as you so love your birdies.

  41. I love the Night In India,
but I feel like it doesn’t go with the soothing blue tones and cottage decor. I always thought I would love wallpaper until I bought a used home. I may never get all of it off the wall because it wasn’t put up properly.
    Happy Easter to all.

I'd love to hear from you! Please leave a comment!
