Art for the Upstairs Hallway: The Beach Girls by Hilarie Lambert

Welcome to the 684th Metamorphosis Monday!

A few years back I added a little blue chest to this corner of my upstairs living room.

Blue Painted Chest, Addition to Upstairs Living Room

This room has a beachy/nautical feel because of how it’s decorated with lighthouse prints and shells collected while vacationing in Captiva, Sanibel, and Hilton Head Island many years ago. Though I loved the chest here, I eventually moved it to the hallway outside this room because it was crowding out the Danish Bornholm Tall Case clock. I tried moving the clock to the upstairs hallway at one point, but ultimately I placed it back in its original spot because I missed seeing it here. Update: I’ve had a few emails about the chest, it is still available here: Blue Chest.

The little blue chest ended up here in the upstairs hall which turned out to be a nice addition. I love how it provides a spot for a lamp and added some interest and light to this end of the hall in the evening.

Art for Upstairs Hall

Years ago, before A Classy Flea closed, I came across this Giclee print/painting while shopping there. I didn’t get it the first time I came across it but I couldn’t get it out of my mind, so I went back for it the next day. It’s by Hilarie Lambert and is titled The Beach Girls. It makes me think of two sisters, or perhaps they are best friends, spending a wonderful day at the seashore together, laughing and making special memories neither would ever forget.

I had never gotten around to getting it framed so recently I stopped by Michaels to see what they would recommend. I’ve never used them for framing but since their framing shop still exists after all these years, I figured they must be doing something right and decided to give them a try. The first time I stopped by, they asked if I wanted to leave it on the thick wood frame on which it was stretched or did I want it moved to foam core board. I wasn’t sure, so didn’t leave the painting that day. Once I decided to place it over the chest here in the hall, I decided to let them mount it to foam core the way they had suggested. That way it wouldn’t stick out so far as you viewed it from the side coming down the hall.

Beach Themed Giclee Painting

This was the frame I chose. I wanted a frame that was a bit rustic, like a piece of old driftwood you would come across on the beach. This was the first frame sample I pulled off the wall from the frames they had in stock. After trying several against the painting, it was the one I decided to use.

Beachy Themed Decor and Art

Not sure if you can see it in this closeup, but the frame is a mix of subtle greens, rusty oranges, and deep browns.

I really like how the frame looks with the colors the artist chose.

Beach-themed Art by Hilarie Lambert

This hall is a bit narrow, so photographing it was a challenge. What do you think, do you like my frame choice? I didn’t want to use a frame with light grays, I wanted something that felt more grounded. Also, I didn’t want a frame with hints of blue since there’s already so much blue in the image.

A little beachy decor as we enter into spring and summer…

Here’s the signature of the artist, Hilarie Lambert.

I took a photo of the back when I dropped it off since the artist’s signature would end up hidden once it was framed.

So happy to finally have it framed. I know I could have left it as it was, unframed on the stretched wood bars, but I really prefer how art looks when it’s framed…just prefer a more finished look.

  1. Finding that perfect wall art is challenging! The frame really makes the fun art pop.

    • Thanks, Rani! I get so stressed when choosing a frame but this time was easier…maybe because they don’t have such an overwhelming selection at Michaels. lol

  2. Thanks for the party Susan, the painting is wonderful, and I love the way you styled it with a beachy vignette~

  3. The frame looks great. I think the subtle colors in the frame work well with all the colors in the picture. Thank you for having us all over for another great party.

  4. Sharyn Kimbrough says

Susan, love your style and color of decorating. Keep on keeping on.

  5. The frame is a great choice for the picture. You have a wonderful piece of art from an accomplished artist.

  6. Helen Peterson says

  7. franki Parde says

Nope, the frame is perfect!!! You will smile every time when walking by! franki

  8. LOVE your print and shell decor. The blue chest is gorgeous and a real focal point. Thanks for hosting, Susan. Have a great week!

    • Thanks, Debra! I lucked out finding it very inexpensively on Amazon. I should have included that in the post. I think I’ll add that now.

  9. You picked the perfect frame Susan! I love how rustic is looks, it indeed does remind me of a piece of driftwood. The colors in the frame pull out the colors in the artwork, I just love it and I love it above your beautiful chest! Hugs, Brenda

  10. Love the frame; all the variations enhance/highlight the colors in the print.
(and we have the spring header!)

    • Yes, I snuck that header in on the 1st. With all the 75+ degree weather we’ve been having here for the last 2-3 weeks, I couldn’t resist. 🙂

  11. The frame choice is perfect! The rustic frame works well with the decor and the chest, and the subtle mix of colors of the frame really accentuate the colors in the piece.

    • Thanks, Gail! I love so many different styles of decor from English Country to more rustic. Have to sneak a little bit of all of into my home. lol

  12. The art and the frame are perfect….great room!

  13. Love your frame choice and the beachy vibe on top of the blue chest! Could you tell me where you found the chest? Always enjoy your posts!

  14. Susan,
Thanks again for hosting this lovely party every week! I know how much time goes into doing so and I want you to know that it is greatly appreciated!! Stay safe, healthy and happy!!

  15. Love it!! Perfect frame for that art work.

  16. Love the frame you chose for this artwork. It really looks “finished”. The frame really brings out the color in the picture. They did a great job.

  17. Sherry B says

I think the addition of the frame looks great. The color compliments the style and colors of the artwork and finishes it beautifully. Doesn’t the beach always make us feel better!

  18. I like the frame you chose. It really draws your eye into the picture and blends with the artwork and doesn’t compete with it.

  19. Sabrina Holmes says

I think the frame you picked couldn’t be more perfect!

  20. Erika Dyer says

Always love your decorative touches. Did you use glass on the picture? I couldn’t tell? I am concerned about the light source near the painting. I would use a light source lower down or a darker shade. Wouldn’t want to fade your nice artwork, as it is so nice.

  21. Jennifer Kellers says

Love this painting so much! Reminds me of old pictures of ladies enjoying the beaches of Newport or Nantucket in the 1920s.
Love the coastal feel of your room and hall as well!

I'd love to hear from you! Please leave a comment!
