How I Protect My Car’s Seats From Denim Transfer Stains During the Fall And Winter

A few years back I noticed dark blue coloring on the leather seats of the SUV that I had at that time. I came to realize it was from wearing dark jeans. Fortunately, I was able to get it off with my favorite super cleaner. I think that’s when I first discovered this super cleaner—when I was trying to find a way to remove denim transfer off the leather seats of my car. I use this Super Cleaner for so much now, it’s my favorite cleaner for tough dirt/grime. (Super Cleaner is available here: Super Cleaner.)

After cleaning the seat, I purchased a faux leather seat cover (visible in the photo below) that completely covered the seat. During the summer months when I wear light-colored clothing, I take the cover off, but once cool weather comes around and I bring out my fall/winter wardrobe, I add the cover back to the driver’s seat of my SUV. The photo below shows some of the bluish denim transfer I always get on the cover. By the end of winter, the color is much darker.

How I'm Protecting Car Seat from Jean Denim Dye Transfer

Though I love the protection the seat cover offers, I’ve never been fond of the color of the cover. It doesn’t go well with the color of the seats in my SUV which are much lighter. So this year I decided to try something new. I was thinking of buying a black cover so the denim transfer stains wouldn’t be so obvious since I don’t like seeing it even on the temporary cover; then it dawned on me that the interior of my car is actually two colors! I have black leather on the dash and the doors. I hadn’t thought of matching to the black before.

This is the black cover I chose, it just arrived a few days ago. It came folded in the package, so that’s why it has a crease in the center. I haven’t officially placed it on my car seat since we are still in the 80s here and I’m still wearing light-colored summer clothing, but I think the crease will smooth out once I properly stretch it over the seat and start using it. These covers do work with heated seats, you can feel the heat right through the cover.

Seat Cover to Protect Against Denim Transfer

Tomorrow is the first day of fall, so I thought this would be a great time to share how I keep my lighter seats clean during the winter months when I wear a lot of black and dark blue jeans. If you have light-colored seats in your car/truck/SUV, or just don’t want to risk getting denim stains on your seats, you’ll find the cover I’ve been using available in 8 different styles/colors here: Faux Leather Care Seat Cover. I wish I had been buying the black color all along. I think it looks much nicer with the interior of my car than the beige color did. When you can’t match exactly, I think it’s better to go with a contrasting or a secondary color—not sure why it took me so long to realize that.

Denim Transfer protection against denim stains

Do you have a seat cover that you like to use during the fall/winter or throughout the year to protect your car seats? Even if I had black leather seats in my SUV, I would still worry about denim transfer on the seats even though it wouldn’t be as visible, especially once spring came around and I started wearing white shorts/jeans and lighter clothing. I wish someone made dark jeans that wouldn’t transfer onto seats. If you have a favorite brand of dark-colored jeans that won’t leave color transfer on seats, please share the brand and where you normally buy them. I’m especially fond of jeggings since they are so comfortable, but they seem to transfer stain even more than regular jeans. What is your favorite denim jeans brand?

  1. Our SUV has black leather interior…I’ve never had an issue with colour transfer from jeans. (I’d notice if dye rubbed off on my lighter clothing from the jeans during the warmer months). I’m still into skinny jeans & jeggings- and have never had a problem with dye transfer wearing American Eagle jeans. (they are my go to…I love the fit & feel). And Silver jeans is my second favourite…

  2. I have found that if I put my new jeans in a plastic bag overnight in the freezer and then wash them I don’t have blue transfer. Google it!

    • Interesting! I wonder how that works. The dark denim jeggings I buy at Talbots continue to cause transferring staining no matter how many times they are washed. Not sure anything will stop those but the freezing sounds interesting!

  3. Car Guys Super Cleaner is one of those hidden gems that has been mentioned in a number of post, going back years. Definitely worth repeating, best leather clean I’ve ever used. Thanks!

      Hello
The dark cover is very nice. Just wondered if there is a chance using the car seat heater with cover on could discolor your car seat? I know you are trying to protect the original leather seat. What is the color or material underneath the black cover?
      Thanks.

    • It is! It’s my go-to for cleaning just about everything, especially hard stains.

  4. I wash new dark denim in a cold water wash. Instead of soap, I add 1/2 cup white vinegar. This seems to do the trick for me.

    • I think I tried the vinegar trick a long time ago, but it’s been so long, can’t remember for sure. I should try it again with my older jeans that I’ll be pulling out this fall. Thanks, Cindy!

  5. Love that ‘tuxedo’ look for car seats; I think you just may have created a new design for cars!

  6. I can’t tell from your pic of the lighter colored seat cover, but is it covering only the seat, and not the back support part? Does that section not get the color transfer? I didn’t know they made the seat cover only, the whole seat cover always rips in the middle section, which is why I have not purchased one for my husband’s new car seats, which are also “beige”. Could you possibly provide a link for the light-colored cover? It looks very high end, and I assume it has held up well for you?

  7. I am so thankful you turned me onto Car Guy’s super cleaner. It is the first thing I turn to when cleaning tough stains. I have even used it to clean my stove top. Just ordered two more today.

    • I know what you mean, Pam. As soon as I purchased the house in Ohio, I immediately ordered several bottles. I can’t do without it. So glad you have found it helpful, too! I hope they never change the formula because it works so well!

  8. You might ask L.L.Bean if their jeans and leggings transfer ink. The quality of their garments is very high and jeans come in a variety of sizes and colors.

  9. Bernadette Lieberthal says

Susan – my car manufacturer warns about putting a cover on my seats while using the seat heater. Please check your car’s manual to be safe.

  10. NYDJ have been perfect with beige leather car seats…wash first and no blue on seats!

I'd love to hear from you! Please leave a comment!
