Yay, It Has Arrived! Plus, A Halloween Piece I’m Obsessing Over!

Welcome to the 829th Tablescape Thursday! I finally have a non-dented refrigerator! Yay! The new one arrived a week sooner than Lowe’s had predicted and it was delivered yesterday.

You may remember from a previous post that when my LG CounterDepth, Door-in-Door refrigerator was delivered a few weeks ago, it arrived with with a big gash in the box and two very obvious dents in the front right below the icemaker.

I am hoping that this one will also do a better job of cooling. I had the previous fridge set on 34 and it never came close to reaching that temp. The best it ever did was 38 degrees, even after a full night of not being opened. I had two different thermometers inside, just in case one wasn’t working and it just couldn’t get down to the temperature I had set.

Yay, no dents!

After a full night of not being opened, the thermometer was reading 35 this morning. I had it sitting inside where I could knock on the IinstaView door and when the light came on, I could see the thermometer without opening the door. So this one is doing better than the old one, so far.

With the first delivery, the delivery guys removed all the plastic protectant pieces inside. For this delivery, they didn’t do that, but I kinda enjoyed doing that myself. Some of the tape was a challenge to remove, though.

My 30-day try out period has reset. You may remember from my previous post that I opened up a Lowe’s credit card to make this purchase instead of using my Amex as I normally would for the sole reason that if you place an appliance purchase on a Lowe’s card, Lowe’s automatically gives you 30 days to decide if you like and want to keep the appliance. If you use any other card, you get 48 hours. I learned that helpful bit of information when I purchased an LG washer from Lowe’s a year or so ago and discovered after just a couple of washes that I detested it. There were a ton of very unhappy people in the reviews of that washer who had not run a load of clothes right away had missed the 48-hour return period and were stuck with a washer they hated. Glad I read the reviews because that’s how I knew about the 48-hour return period. I wonder what the return period is on appliances at the other big-box stores. Refrigerators are expensive purchases and no one wants to be stuck for the next 10 years, or however long it lasts, with a refrigerator that doesn’t work as they expected.

One major gripe that I had with the dented version of this refrigerator, the one that was just taken away, was its pitiful ice production. There’s an “Ice Plus” button on the front panel that you can press every 24 hours (so annoying to have to remember to do that each day) that will supposedly force the refrigerator to make a new tray of ice every 2 hours. That doesn’t sound too bad until you realize this is a full tray of ice. What you see below is a FULL tray of ice from the LG CounterDepth, Door-in-Door Instaview refrigerator. 🙁 When the ice bin is completely empty and the ice maker dumps a full tray of ice, what you see below is how much it produces—not even quite enough to fill up your average 20 oz Yeti tumbler halfway. Pathetic! Imagine a family of 4 trying to fill up a Yeti tumbler as they are headed out the door. I am hoping there was something wrong with the last refrigerator and that this one will do better.

LG Counterdepth French Door, Refrigerator, Doesn't Make Enough Ice

I dumped out the ice into a small bowl so you can see how a full tray of ice looks. The cubes are very small. We really have gone backward in the making of refrigerators if this is normal. Are families with LG refrigerators buying ice by the bag every time they go grocery shopping? The bin is tiny so even if it were full to the top, I don’t think it would fill that many glasses. If I return this refrigerator, it will be solely due to its pathetic ice production. I’ll let you know how the new one does.

One final note: This refrigerator does a good job of producing the large, ball ice. It will make 6 of these large balls of ice per day, but that’s not what I really want in my glass of iced tea. I have been saving it in bags though as a backup since the regular icemaker is horrible. I’ll let you know in a week or so how the new fridge is doing.

On other kitchen news, I’m loving the large tray I purchased for my recently purchased toaster. This tray measures 11.7 x 13.8 and is working great for those times I want to make toast and don’t want to heat up the underside of my kitchen cabinets. One thing I really, really like about it is how it pulls the toaster allll the way out to the edge of the counter, so I don’t have to scoot the tray forward. Love that! (Tray is available in a bunch of different sizes here: Sliding Tray for Appliances.)

I’ll close this post with a pillow I’m currently obsessing over! Do I need another Halloween pillow? No. Do I want this one so badly I can’t see straight? Yes! lol I know it’s probably going to sell out before it can go on sale, I’ve missed out on other popular items that way in the past—waiting on a sale, so I should probably get it now. Soooo cute, and I know my grandsons would love it! I need a chair here in my office for it. I don’t even have the pillow yet and I’m already envisioning where it should go. Hahaha. I need that pillow! (The Cat in Pumpkin Pillow is available here: Cat in Pumpkin Pillow.) Are you starting to think about autumn and Halloween decorating?

Looking forward to the beautiful table settings linked for this week’s Tablescape Thursday!

So far, so GOOD!!! Functional & fashionable…as far as appliances go!! franki

  2. Whatever caused the 2 dents in the previous fridge may have also disrupted the electronics – hence not cooling as expected. I have discovered refrigerators nowadays are much more fragile than those of the 6os and 70s which were immortal. Maybe the ice production will sort itself out too.

    • I sure hope that’s it! I love the layout of this refrigerator, my only complaint is the ice. I guess I’ll know in a few days if it’s doing better or not. It is supposed to take up to 48 hours to get going and make its first batch of ice. The dented one took 36 hours before it produced ice. This one had a few batches of ice in it this morning, but I did press Ice Plus yesterday, so not sure if it’s doing better or if it was due to pressing ice plus. I should know soon, though. Thanks, Susan!

  3. Yikes—if that’s a full tray of ice, it sure wouldn’t work in our house. My hubby & I each fill our 24 oz cups 3/4 full of ice 2-3 x/day. We are “ice people”. When I order a cold beverage at a restaurant, I always add, “& an extra glassful of ice”. We have switched to a separate ice maker, which isn’t convenient for everyone, but it sits nicely on a rolling tray next to the fridge. Otherwise, your fridge sure looks great! The 30 day trial period is a plus, for sure!

    • MerriJo, you and I would get along great because I am definitely an ice person! I do that same thing, too…often ask for a extra glass of ice when I order my meal.
I’d love to know more about your separate ice maker. Could you share the brand/model, or a link to it? I would love to check that out!

Ice is very important to me. Back it would go. For all that money you paid for the refrigerator it should make tons of ice. Just to let you know my little fridge I have upstairs for drinks cause I have a hard time doing steps. So i bought a ice maker too. I love it.

    • I agree! It was expensive, especially since I purchased the extra warranty since refrigerators today are known for having problems. It very well may go back if the ice production for this one isn’t any better than the last one. Tamara, which ice maker do you have? Would love to know a good one. Do you have a link to it? Thanks!

  5. Wow that’s not much ice for a fancy machine like that! I hope it turns out ok, but lucky you have the return period. It’s a pretty fridge though and I’m happy you got it earlier than expected. Good luck, and of course thanks for hosting the party!

Hi Susan, I have a Jenn-Air refrigerator that came with the house when I bought it last year and it has a good size tray for the ice cubes and the ice cubes are larger, they’re crescent shaped. As far as Halloween decor, I already started by buying a couple of things on Home Goods, I think they have the best Halloween decor and they’re prices are reasonable.

    • My 20 year old KitchenAid makes the crescent ice, too…and makes a ton of it. I’ve been told that this pitiful ice production issue that apparently a lot of refrigerators have today, is some type of govt. regulations they are following. If that’s true, hold onto your refrigerator as long as you can!

  7. Antoinette says

That’s surprising to hear since the refrigerator looked fairly new when I bought my house last year. And, I am planning to hold on to it as long as possible; it’s bad enough when I renovated the kitchen, that I had to buy a new dishwasher, a new range and a new microwave since the ones that came with the house were outdated and builder’s grade.

    • I feel you on that! I’m having to buy all new appliances, too. They are all very, very old. The refrigerator I replaced had a broken ice maker and two broken shelves. One I removed and the other was threatening to collapse at any moment. It was 16 years old. I think all the other appliances are that old, too since they are all the same brand…Kenmore. The microwave doesn’t work at all so I think I’ll be getting a new stove and microwave the next time I’m here. Gotta do some research and figure out which brand to go with.

  8. It’s that extra feature on front of your fridge..glass door…that cuts down on ice production. What I was told when looking at new refrigerators.
Check out @tomimishousewego on instagram. She has a countertop ice maker that she raves about all the time. Prolly in her highlights or on her Amazon page. You’ll love her. You remind me of her!!!

  9. My birthday is on the 18th of this month and my husband has been reminding me that it is coming up soon and what do I want for my birthday. I finally thought of something – the pumpkin pillow with the black cat!

  10. Antoinette says

The appliances that I bought for my kitchen less than a year ago were Frigidaire “Professional Series”. I had the same appliances at my last house and I was very happy with them.

  11. Roxanne Bernard says

Hi Susan, we have had the same LG refrigerator for 3 years and so far so good. The extended warranty just ran out, and Lowes offered another 3 years for $60/ year. Appliances are so poorly made now, I purchased the new one. When ours first started making ice, it seemed pitiful there was so little ice in 24 hours. But it finally started churning out cubes and the bin stays full. My husband also dropped the temp a couple of degrees in the refrigerator. We call the glass door “the knock knock door” bc we were so enamored with knocking on the door to make the light come on! I love that pumpkin pillow!!

    • Oh my gosh, I stealing that name Roxanne! That is so cute! I’m going to tell my grandsons that it’s the knock-knock door. 🙂 I have the temp on -2 right now. I was gone all day today, but I noticed the Ice Plus went off during the day. I hope it was churning out ice today while I always gone. lol I was at least able to fill up a small glass once I got back home. I think you were smart to buy that warranty…agree refrigerators are made so poorly these days. I hope yours stays trouble-free!

  12. Teresa Pasquariello says

Hi Susan, Love your cat in pumpkin pillow! I’m afraid I have to curtail my collecting until I really sort through my stuff. I opted to go without an ice maker, seems like everyone I know that has that feature, gets some kind of blockage or something that causes a leak, so just see if there are preventative measures.

  13. We have an LG with a knock knock door and the light comes on if my husband is in the kitchen and coughs. (he’s loud!) Doesn’t speak well if a refrigerator can’t keep a one-person household all iced-up! Would be sufficient in other countries I suspect.

  14. Hi Susan, It has been so enjoyable following along as you work on your new home and decorate. I just read the post about the year round Christmas trees. I have always really loved the decor Marie created for holidays. I hope she is well these days. Every year I put up seven trees and love them, also sad when they finally come down. I am putting them up in September this year as it is taking much longer to get everything done these days. We were just discussing leaving at least the flocked one up year round with varied ornaments. Maybe even one or two others. We are older and I figure we should enjoy the things we love in the time we are still here! Not to mention that taking things down is so much less fun than putting it all up.

  15. I believe the problem you’re having with the ice production is why many people are buying ice machines to sit on their countertops as they produce so much more ice than the refrigerators they make today. I have a GE basic side by side frig and I have to admit it does a much better job than your brand.

  16. We bought a 4 door Whirlpool counter depth fridge about a year ago and just love the layout and it makes a lot of ice, the tray is large and it makes more as soon as it is empty. It isn’t through the door as you lose space and they are more likely to break. It isn’t a big fridge but holds more than enough for 2 of us. I am short and can finally reach the top shelf, so things don’t get forgotten. Hope your new fridge is everything you want it to be!

I'd love to hear from you! Please leave a comment!
