Having just featured a book depicting lots of wonderful rooms decorated in English style, I couldn’t resist sharing another one of my favorite English design books. You may remember when I featured the book, Perfect English by Ros Byam Shaw. Last summer I was excited to discover she has also written a book on cottage design.
In the BNOTP Library: Perfect English Cottage
Author: Ros Byam Shaw
Published: Ryland Peters & Small (September 1, 2009)
Hardcover: 192 pages
Book size: 11.6 x 9.8 x 0.9
3 Things I Like About This Book:
- Lots of great pictures of English cottage decor. Just as in Ros Byam Shaw’s other books, the rooms feel real and not like designer show-houses.
- Features a nice variety of English cottages from farmhouse simple to more ornate and elegant. Homes exude so much warmth and character…no overly decorated or styled-within-an-inch-of-its-life, rooms.
- Author has divided the cottages she features into 5 styles: Romance, Character, Holiday, Simplicity and Elegance. Great book for anyone who loves a true English cottage.

Wende, I love the movie, The Holiday…adorable cottage! I posted a tour of the cottage in this post: https://betweennapsontheporch.net/the-holiday-movie-house-tour-rosehill-cottage/
I haven’t seen Sleeping with the Enemy. I need to though…to see the house. Thanks for recommending it. It’s going on my list of great movie houses! It would be fun to own something used in a movie…would be so cool to see it in the movie and in your own home!
Oh I LOVE this book, Susan! I have had it for several years and just look at it over and over. I love the “real” aspect to the decor. I still use it for inspiration a lot. Lovely book!!
Anita, I know what you mean, I really love that about it, too. Much prefer homes that look lived in!
Yep! It’s a wonderful book. How about it’s sister book, Perfect English.? Love them both, but it might just be the titles. I would buy a book if it was titled Perfect English Outhouses. Love them all!
Love that room on the cover, so cozy and still airy. Not what I was expecting by the title. You’ve certainly broadened my design world with your library reviews. Thank Susan for taking the time to do them.
THESE BOOKS SOUND GREAT, WILL CK AMONZON. HAVEN T BEEN GETTING UPDATES, JUST RESUBSCRIBED. THANKS FOR ALL THE PRETTY PICTURES AND INFO.
Glad it let you resubscribe. Now that I’m using Feedblitz, hopefully the updates will keep coming as they should. 🙂
Another good book recommendation from you, Susan. This is nice. Cottages look exceptionally beautiful when they are built on rolling hills, meadows, forests, or near the beach. They have this somewhat rustic but homey feel to them that is just so captivating. That is why I think a charming English cottage would look nice in Mount Pleasant, SC, especially with all the lush greenery and beaches we have here. And just maybe, I’ll be the owner of that cottage.
Thanks for this recommendation. Hope to see more posts from you!
