Snow in Georgia

It happens every Christmas. As it comes time to say goodbye to my son and his sweetie, I get those post-holiday blues. Does that happen to you or are you lucky enough to have your children/family living near by?

I’ve lived in Georgia pretty much my whole life. We’ve had snow before Christmas and after Christmas, but this is the first white Christmas I can recall. It actually snowed on Christmas Day.

Here’s the knock-out rose I blogged about HERE during the summer. Should I cut it back? It was originally in a topiary or more rounded form at the top, which I really liked.

This is the top of the screened-in porch…not a view I’m used to seeing out of the upstairs windows.

The Southern Magnolia, bearer of all those magnolia leaves I decorated with this Christmas, looks very different today. The maple is a ‘Waterfall’ Japanese maple. I saw one once in an issue of Fine Gardening and after searching everywhere, I finally found one for my own yard. The camillia you see was loaded with flower buds. I’m hoping some will survive the snow to bloom later. It normally blooms this time of year and into January. I love having camillia blossoms to float in bowls in January. Did you get snow this Christmas where you live?

  1. Snowing here in SC too. I am from Florida and last November we moved to Cincinnati. I had a LONG winter up there with snow on the ground for 2 1/2 months straight. We just moved to SC in September and I think the snow followed me!

Gorgeous! There's just something magical about a beautiful white Christmas. Hopefully it helped to ease the goodbyes. Happy new year to you.

  3. My MIL had snow in Kennesaw, Ga and she sure isn't used to that either. We're in the Villages near Ocala, Florida and it's only 41 degrees. It has dropped 2 degrees since this morning but the sun is out now. I'm glad you got to be with family this Christmas. We spent it with friends and had a nice time but I still missed the little ones. Have a safe and warm day eating leftovers.

  4. Mid-Atlantic Martha says

We got snow here in Mid-Atlantic Virginia — and it's still snowing! First they said it would snow a foot or more — then they said none at all, now they're saying about 6 inches. My sweetie and sweetie in law and grand sweeties all live in Atlanta. Didn't see them for Christmas but they were here at Thanksgiving….so I know about those "let down blues." Wishing you a Happy New Year.

  5. I am so glad you were able to experience a white Christmas. Between Christmas Eve and Christmas Day we had about six inches in the Chicagoland area. I would love a "green" Christmas one day.

  6. Hi, I am visiting family in S.C. and enjoying the same snowfall as you and your family. It is the first time in 65 years that they have had a white Christmas. Happy New Year from my porch to yours.

  7. I live in Warner Robins, and it just didn't come down far enough. I would have loved a white Christmas.

I heard it was the first White Christmas in GA in 100 years! How amazing!! It looks SO beautiful!!!! I hope your Christmas was fabulous!!!

    m ^..^

  9. Glenda/MidSouth says

Enjoyed seeing your snow pictures. We had flurries yesterday and during the night and that was all, which is fine with me. Looked out just a bit ago and we were getting flurries again. No snow predicted this week. As a matter of fact I did a post this morning about what one of the TV stations had on their 7 day forecast.:-D Called the station and the man said they would get it corrected and that was over an hour ago and it is still showing 460 ! 😀
    Have a great day!

  10. countrycottagegirl says

We live in Toccoa, GA and enjoyed watching the snow falling last night for Christmas too! So beautiful today!

  11. Modern Country Lady says

What a beautiful view you have !! Hope your Christmas was as lovely and relaxing as mine!! 🙂

  12. No, you're not the only one who feels the loss when the car drives away. First time ever that the grands do not live 10 minutes from us. While I am thankful for the 8 years close to them, there's a giant gaping hole without them. Thankfully the busy-ness of life will soon take over again and life goes on.

We had a white Christmas last year in Dallas. It was fabulous. It really felt like Christmas. There's just something wrong with 70 degrees on Christmas day!

  13. What lovely pictures! Yes, it does seem quieter after Christmas. My nephew's birthday, however, is New Year's Day, so we all get back together then!
We are supposed to get a couple of inches of snow tonight, but nothing yet. It's the blustery wind they are predicting that I don't like.

  14. Hi Susan:
So glad you had a Merry Christmas..still have about 6 inches on the ground, got another skiff this morning. Makes it hard to feed my horses in! I get blue too, told my hubby today that the next two months are my least fave of the whole year. Gosh I hope your beautiful flowers survive..none for me until at least May….

  15. Kathy@ Gone North says

Your deck, porch & yard all look lovely with the snow fall…
Makes for just a bit of Christmas magic : )
BUT we live in Michigan, so snow is just part of daily life here.
We will have to say goodbye to son #3 & wife this week, as they drive back to Colorado… always a bit hard.

  16. Simone @ Doberman's by the Sea says

We have a few flurries here in LA, but they don't stick. It is just very windy. I miss haveing a white Christmas. Back home they got 20in. over night. I haven't seen my family in 3 years.

  17. Warm Holiday greetings from Bend Oregon!

As you know, there is always the opportunity to see snow here ~ just look toward the Cascades. My son in Roswell had snow, son in Minneapolis always has snow.

  18. Chris@Cats On My Quilts says

I think it's funny that I had a brown Christmas in NH and you had a white one in Georgia! What's up with that? Although the big blizzard is about to hit so I'll have a white day after Christmas.

  19. I think white Christmases are gorgeous…. even here , where my parents live (North Italy) today it snowed!!!!Blessings, Flavia

  20. Hasn't it been wonderful? We have about 2-2.5 inches here. My parents live further north in the mountains. They have 5 inches. I always get a tad sad the day after as well. No doubt, Christmas is my favorite time of the year,

  21. No snow here in my part of North Texas. It's a balmy 60 degrees and sunny. I say cut back your rose unless it blooms on old wood.

  22. I hope your holiday blues are short-lived. Happy New Year! La

  23. Its snowing in Myrtle Beach today!!
I understand being sad when the family leaves. My family did not come here this year for Christmas and it was a lonely day with me and my husband. We are going to Kentucky for the New Years, that is when we are celebrating our Christmas as a family!

  24. Cindy (Applestone Cottage) says

We have snow like you wouldn't believe! It's been beautiful and magical and I will never tire of a white Christmas!
I was in Florida one year during Christmas and it just wasn't the same.
My son and dil just left and then will be flying back to Phoenix. Very sad, I miss them so much!
My dil is newly pregnant so next year should be a very special Christmas for them.
    Cindy

  25. Ah! It almost looks like Ohio!! Your photos are just beautiful!! Have a Merry week, enjoy the snow, drive safely!!!

  26. Hi Susan! Oh, how marvelous to have a White Christmas! Hope that snow doesn't hurt your pretty outdoor furniture. We used to live in New Mexico and had quite a few White Christmases. But I grew up in Alabama and had some then too! 🙂
Hope your Christmas was marvelous and I'm looking forward to more Porching with you in 2011.
    Be a sweetie,
    shelia 😉

  28. There were snow flurries in Tallahassee Florida today. My youngest grandchildren saw it for
    the first time!
I always get a little sad after Christmas,it seems to go too quickly!

  29. Us south GA folks heard you north GA folks had some snow and wished we had gotten some too, but no luck. It snowed more here last winter than any of us could believe so don't know what we would have thought if we had gotten snow two years in a row! Snow always looks soooo pretty but I'm still glad I live in the south where I don't have to contend with the mess that inches and inches can cause. Hope you had a lovely Christmas.

  30. Southerncook says

I am so fortunate to have my children living where we live. However, one of my sons and his family went to visit DIL's family in Jackson but thats as it should be. We did miss them though especially the two grand daughters. I do understand your sadness when your family leaves.

I had seen on the news that Atlanta had gotten a good bit of snow. Here in N FL where I live we also got snow flurries which doesn't happen very often. It was fun to watch but it didn't stick. About your rose bush, treat it as you would any other rose bush (I grow lots of roses) and don't cut it back until late Feb. If new growth starts growing back before it warms up it could kill the bush.

  31. It began to snow here about 8pm last night and we now have about 9". It is going to freeze overnight, so I guess I'll be housebound for days.

I had the blues all day yesterday (we do our family gathering on Christmas Eve) and teared-up at everything.

  32. I'm so excited for so many in the south experiencing a White Christmas. I was talking with my friend in northern Georgia this morning and she was sitting on her porch watching it snow.

You have nearly as much as we have in my part of Michigan right now and we're looking forward to 50 degrees on New Years Day!!!

Thanks for sharing your beautiful winter wonderland Susan.

    Susan,
No SNOW in Kansas this year at Christmas! I loved your photos! We had a wonderful time with son, daughter~in~law and granddog! See you soon!

I'm in NW Georgia not too far north of you! The last time that it snowed on Christmas Day in Georgia in an amount sufficient to measure was 1882!
What a beautiful gift I felt we were given. No ice storm, no freezing rain…just lovely, beautiful snow!
Yes, I get a bit blue when everyone leaves but right now I still have a son and my two oldest grandsons so I'm still having Christmas!

  35. Brambleberry Cottage says

We had snow flurries two weekends in a row. Then, we finally got a "real" snow starting Christmas Day. It continued into today and now everything is totally covered with inches of snow. I love it! My thought is – if it has to be cold – I would prefer the cold with snow.

Hope you had a blessed Christmas, Susan!

  36. I enjoyed your photos! It seems that everyone is getting snow now. It doesn't snow much in South Arkansas..but when it does we're out in it until it melts!

  37. Christmas Greetings from Toronto, Ontario Canada. Yes we have snow. Plenty of it. Its been snowing off and on since the middle of November. But hey we live in Canada.

Hi Susan! Merry Christmas a bit late and early Happy New Year! 🙂 What a lovely snow we had here as well north of Atlanta. We enjoyed a family time with our children and grandies, but I do know what you mean about the post holiday blues, I've got a bit of that tint myself since they all went back. Hopefully we can get together the first quarter of 2011. I particiapated in a Holiday Garden & Home tour here in my neighborhood for December and that took up two full months of my time from early October till the event on 12.4. It was fun, but tons of work~an experience that the local papers did a fabulous job capturing for us. Looking forward to a quieter year. Hope all else is great with you! Be safe on the roads friend! 🙂 ~CC Catherine
