Shortly after I moved into the Dollhouse, I purchased an inexpensive bed and mattress on Amazon so I’d have a place to sleep that wasn’t a mattress on the floor. lol That bed is still working great, but I’ve been itching to change it out for a 4-poster bed. I figure if I ever decide to move to the Dollhouse full-time, bringing my current bed from Georgia along with me, I could always move any bed I purchase now for this room to one of the two guest rooms.
There is one wrinkle in that plan: I already have guest bedroom furniture that I like in the Georgia house, and one of the two guest bedrooms in the Dollhouse is quite small, so that might not work. Maybe my existing full-size guest bed in the Georgia house would work in the smaller of the two Dollhouse bedrooms. Or, maybe I should just not worry about that right now. I’m always thinking way too far ahead!
For grins and giggles, I spent some time looking for beds online a few weeks back and fell hard for some of the wonderful 4-poster beds I found. If you’ve been reading BNOTP for a while, you probably already know that I’m a big fan of 4-poster beds. This 4-poster bed in my bedroom in the Georgia house came with canopy rails. I used to have those in place on the bed, but I had to remove them once I added a chandelier to this room. There wasn’t room for both without raising the chandelier much higher up.
I’ve measured and a 4-poster bed should it in the cozy alcove space in this room, but I may have to scoot the bed over a little more to the right.
I love, love, love the design of this beautiful 4-poster bed, especially the headboard. It would be fun to do something different for this cottage-style home, something light and airy. This beautiful bed is available here: Beautiful Canopy Bed with Quatrefoil/Diamond Design.
Ever since I fell in love with the bamboo pieces I often saw Charles Faudree using in his own homes, I’ve loved the exotic look of bamboo furniture. This 4-poster, canopy, leather-wrapped bamboo bed feels so romantic! The Chippendale design of the headboard makes me love it even more! Is this a bit too exotic for a cottage home? Read more about his beautiful island-inspired bed design here: Island West Indies Style Canopy Bed and here: Island West Indies Style Canopy Bed.
I’ve always loved 4 poster beds with the ornate turned posters.
I normally see them painted black or a dark color. I like this more neutral shade! The finish is described as a “burnished sauternes” finish. (Read and see additional photos of this bed that’s currently on sale, here: Beautiful 4-Poster Bed.)
Per the description, the design of this beautiful bed was inspired by British Colonial and Campaign styling. It has a woven cane headboard which I think adds a touch of island exotic. I don’t know why I’m drawn to these beds that are designed with so many natural, textural elements. I guess I just love the depth and interest it adds. You’ll find additional photos of this bed here: 4-Poster Canopy Bed.
Not a 4-poster bed, but I really liked the design of this bed with its leather-wrapped, rattan-inspired frame and woven raffia panels. Notice the pretty silver leaf finials on the top of each corner poster. I love all those special details! See more photos of this bed here: Beautiful Vintage Style Bed.
Which of these 5 beds was your favorite? With the idea of repainting the room, could you envision any of these in the Dollhouse master bedroom?
What fun! For your space, I like the first white four poster, and the last white non-four poster!! They seem light and airy, perfect for your dollhouse.
Susan, I really like all of the unique and beautiful beds you showcased, but I especially LOVE the canopy bed, with the quatrefoil/diamond design. It is traditional, yet exquisitely exotic at the same time, which would be perfect for you and your home. Have fun and happy shopping!
The first and the last are my favorites!! They look cottagey like your home. Beautiful!
Hands down for me would be the bamboo bed. Some of the others would be real dust catchers that would need constant dusting. Ugh!
I love the first white bed, but I really love the bamboo bed. Good luck!
Susan, I’ve mentioned to you in the past how similar our tastes are. And it’s also uncanny how many of the exact same items we both own…like our parents’ old pots and pans. But this time we’re not on the same page. Given the slanted ceiling and how confined that area is, I just can’t see a big four poster bed in that space at all. I much prefer the scale of the bed you have now or the bed in the last picture. Wow, it feels odd being a dissenter here. But I’m sure you always want honest opinions….at least it’s some food for thought.
I agree with Kat. Having a four poster bed draws the eye upward. In my opinion, the slanted ceiling with a four poster bed would look off. That area of the room is too small for a four poster bed with a slanted ceiling. My vote is for the last bed.
I agree with you! And with Sharon W.
In my opinion, none of the beds shown matches the classic beauty and elegance of the gorgeous Rice bed from your GA house. In the photo, the room appears dark and “heavy” because of the wintery plaid fabrics. But, that bed, with a gorgeous floral comforter and pillows, would be a classic centerpiece for your room. I own a Henkel Harris Rice bed, and I adore the design as well as the quality of this piece.
Yes, the plaid is my fall/winter bedding. My spring/summer bedding is much, much lighter/airy. Henkel Harris is beautiful furniture! I’m pretty sure that’s who made my the small chairside table that I have in my GA living room. I miss all the wonderful furniture stores we used to have here in Metro Atlanta that carried Henkel Harris, Hickory Chair, Councill Craftsman, Henredon, and so many other wonderful brands. I think the only one left is Matthews Furniture, hopefully they are still in business.
I love four poster beds and own a Harden heirloom cherry one for many years, but think a four poster bed is too confining for the space you chose.
I love the first and last white ones. They feel more feminine and in keeping with the colors and lightness of the room, shutters, etc. The one bamboo one you like seems like it would fit better with a tropical look and darker colors, matchstick shades, etc. Just my opinion. I think the white would be more different than your Georgia house master suite set. Anyway….fun to see what you are thinking! Whatever you choose I’m sure will be perfect.
Those are all nice beds – but the look of the one that is currently in the DH is just so cottage-y vintage looking perfect. The best being that it doesn’t overwhelm the space as a 4 poster would. That’s my design 50 cents. : – )
I think the ornate four poster bed would be gorgeous in your dollhouse bedroom! That would be my choice. Our first four poster bed was off white & ornate…but really too big for our small bedroom. The four poster we have now is very similar to the one you have in Georgia…it’s a real antique complete with step stool! I love it – it’s extremely comfortable as well….
I especially like the last bed, it is nice and open and bright feeling. thanks for showing the different styles
In my humble opinion, I think a 4-poster would drive my eye nuts in that particular space. I feel like the slanted wall would fight with the post symmetry and especially if you have to ‘off-center’ it. (Aside: I love 4-posters in general—I have a 4-poster cherry pencil post bed). If I were to pick between the ones you chose, I’d pick the last one for that reason. If it were my space, I’d consider a sleigh bed, reason being that you could use a ‘thicker’ mattress set now if you’d wanted the look of a higher mattress, however if you ever got to where you have difficulty getting in and out, then you could replace with a ‘less thick’ mattress and it would still look good. As you can see, at age 65 I like to think about all the possibilities. Even though I am physically fit now, I am probably going to eventually switch to a sleigh style for that very reason as my pencil post is tall like your rice bed, I have to give a good ‘hop’ tog in it, and I won’t want to use the ‘steps’ when I’m 75 🙂
ALL ABOUT OUR TESTER BED!!! We’ve got ours (still using) in the 70s. Have two in the cabin now…your selections make me want three….franki
Susan, I love all the beds you pictured. However, I agree with others that a 4-poster would overwhelm the alcove and not really show off the beauty of the bed. I really like the last non-4 poster bed you showed. It has wonderful lines and, to me, looks like it would go perfectly in the alcove and with the DH. I know whatever you end up choosing, it will be great!
I like the first white poster bed the Beautiful Canopy Bed with Quatrefoil/Diamond Design. But you have fabulous taste and I am sure what ever bed you pick will be awesome.
I love the first photo of the faux bamboo bed the most but all are very nice. I think that one and the other tall poster beds are too overpowering for the space.
For your cottage house I think you should have a more collected look. You don’t need sets of furniture. I know you are buying things so you can living comfortably in it now but buy odds and ends to fill it for a ‘ homey’ look or bring several pieces from your Georgia home to mix in.
I think you want this house to be more casual but it is hard to change from what you have loved in your other home.
I’m with Sharon and Elaine. A four poster for this area looks too busy, too off with the angle of the room. I adore four posters, but for me the last one would be the one. It’s a sweet bed and would look lovely with your decor. I also love the one you currently have. There’s my penny’s worth of thought
If you’re not opposed to buying from Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist, poster beds are available for a song. I regularly see high-quality beds, such as Ethan Allen, being offered for as little as $200!
I like the bed that you have now. A four poster bed in the alcove would emphasize the irregular walls. Once you put things on the walls, the room will feel more comfortable.
I think a canopy bed would be entirely too large for the look in the Dollhouse. I would rather see a pretty headboard and footboard instead. With your lovely linens the bed would really shine.
Lovely. My favorite is the Charles Faudree / West Indies canopy bed. I’ve always loved an island look, though I don’t know why. Never even lived near an island, lol. (Though I always wanted to.)
P.S. – if you decide against a four-poster canopy, your guest room bed in Georgia would look lovely in the DH bedroom.
I don’t think a poster bed would look good because of ceiling. Your full size bed in Georgia would look great in this room. But out of beds you’ve shown the last bed is my choice.
The last one, the vintage one looks perfect for the bedroom…..whether you paint or not!!
I love the West Indies style canopy bed-would want solid wood railings to set box springs in.
Did you consider the TB West Indies non canopy bed? Still has that wonderful airy island look but not the height of the canopy to fight the ceiling? You definitely showed some lovely finds!
It is pretty! I wonder if the canopy could be added to it later if I moved to another home one day. Thanks for reminding me about that version of the bed, Jae!
My favorite beds are 1and even 5. I have 12 foot ceilings and could definitly us a 4 poster bed. At on time my great welding hushand was going to make us one. Then after he retired I had falled in love with our upholstery headboard. Times change but sometimes I really wish we had followed through.
Have fun dreaming.
I salivate for all fine furniture made with bamboo, leather and cane. Don’t make me choose! But like several others, the scale of those beds is too large for that small space. Maybe you could put one out in the larger part of the room instead of using that alcove for your bed. To me, I would feel claustrophobic even with the bed that you currently have in that alcove. I would be putting a wall with a door in it over that alcove to create a huge dressing room and closet, and then bring the bed forward amongst all those incredible windows. But that’s not for everyone, obviously. Sleeping in that alcove probably feels tucked in nice and safe. What color are you thinking of repainting it? It’s lovely the way it is.
Ohh, Susan, I could just cry, I just wrote you a huge, long, detailed comment with a lot of info, & compliments, & it disappeared!! I know it had to be my fault, I had to touch a wrong button. I’m not certain I could remember it all to try & recreate it; it would certainly be different & missing things. It began about 4 poster beds. Maybe a little later I’ll try again. I even copied my msg. several times to not lose it, but did not paste it. Ughhh, Terry N. Have a blessed day.
So sorry that happened, Terry. I’ve done that when replying to comments, so I know how frustrating that is. I’d love to hear what you were going to say!

I vote for the West Indies bamboo bed. Go for what makes your heart sing!
