Children’s Party Table for Movie Night

Welcome to the 178th Tablescape Thursday!

I’m not exactly sure where this tablescape came from.  One minute I was using a gift certificate to purchase napkins for a Valentine’s Day table setting, and the next thing I knew, I was off to the movies.  I think the shift may have had something to do with stumbling across these cute popcorn containers for $1 each at Dollar Tree.

For the centerpiece I used a red and white bowl purchased from Williams-Sonoma years ago.  Filled with candy, it made a fun centerpiece.  Ya gotta have candy when you’re at the movies.  Popcorn doesn’t hurt either.

Children's Movie Night Themed Table Setting with Popcorn Candy Centerpiece

If you create this table setting for a children’s party, you may wish to use more practical glassware.  I couldn’t resist the red goblets for today.

A string of ticket stubs worked well as napkin rings.  They are loosely tied around the napkins.  You can buy a humongous roll of ticket stubs for just $7 at most party stores.  Wish they had smaller rolls…I have enough now to last forever! lol

I  cut one of the gold and beige “tickets” from one of the invitations and tucked it into the centerpiece.

Do you recognize the cake stand I’m using in the centerpiece?  It’s the base for the whimsical cake stand in THIS Alice in Wonderland table setting.

Place card holders are party invitations turned on their side.  A guest’s name could be written along the gold line that’s just beneath the words, “You’re Invited.”

Bird’s eye view…  There’s one more thing I would loved to have had when creating this tablescape. Just imagine 4 large film reels, preferably around 13-14 inches in size, as chargers underneath each dinner plate.  Not sure how practical they would be for eating, but they sure would have been cute in this table setting.   They have them on eBay, they even have red ones!  The red ones would have been perfect, but the traditional metal, gray reels would also have looked great.

Did you notice the backs of the invitations place cards are red and white striped, also?  Got lucky in finding those…they really worked well with this theme.

Tip:  Spilling my secrets…when creating a centerpiece like this, just tuck a dish towel or paper down into the bottom of the container to fill up some of the space.  That way you won’t have to buy more candy than you really need just to fill up the container.  I have a red dish towel tucked down inside mine.

Only expense to create this table setting was $7 for the ticket stubs (barely used any from the huge roll) $4 for the popcorn containers at $1 each and $4 for 8 party invitations used as place cards.  I already had everything else.

I already had the candy stashed away for another project I’ve been thinking of doing.

Since this is a children’s table setting for our “dinner and a movie” tablescape, tonight’s main feature will be Jumangi starring Robin Williams.  The clapperboard, also known as a slate, is a picture frame I’ve had for about 20 years.

If you’re not craving popcorn and candy right now, I haven’t done my job.  See ya at the movies!

Children of all ages would love to be seated at such a fun table — with the promise of candy at the end of the meal! Clever use of the roll of tickets!

  10. This table is so cute, it is so much fun. Great ideas, Susan!..Christine

That is so fun Susan and I think a lot of adults would love a table like this one too!

  19. Reba and Eldarose, sisters, friends and co-bloggers says

I love the table so much. I will probably use some of your ideas eventually. I have a lot of the popcorn containers you used and I've had it in the back of my mind that I will eventually use them for an Oscars viewing party. My husband saved a bunch of "Oscars" from a work function for me and I've held on to them for years, again waiting for that eventual annual Oscar viewing party tradition to begin. I still don't think this will be the year, but maybe next. We always notice whenever we go somewhere with a Hollywood theme because of it. I love how you gave the centerpiece so much height and I love your red goblets. The stars were the perfect touch. Thank you so much for sharing.

I always intend on leaving a comment because I enjoy your tablescapes so much, but I am often so pressed for time that I put it off and then it doesn't end up happening. But, sincerely, LOVE LOVE LOVE your tables so much. I talk to my older sister (and co-blogger), Reba, about them all the time. After Reba came to your site, she insisted to me that you must hire a professional photographer to take your pics because they are too nice. LOL. I told her I know what she meant but that you had shared your secret is high energy lights. I will confess that I was blown away when I first found your blog. Reba and I are mild plate addicts, but when I saw all your posts, I was a cross between giddy and awestruck. Reba and I *might* do 12 tables a year and I use to think that was a lot before finding your blog and getting hooked into the tablescape blog world. It is so amazing to me that you do 52 tables a year. And they are all so gorgeous. So inspiring.

Also, thank you so much for hosting every week. You always send our little blog a good amount of traffic and it is much appreciated, especially as newbie bloggers.

    Sincerely,
    Eldarose from http://re-inventedstyle.blogspot.com

  20. Susan BetweenNapsOnThePorch says

    Thanks,Christine!

  21. What a great table, truly inspired! Love the tickets serving as napkin rings. Isn't it fun when you start in one direction, then your creative self takes over and achieves more than you imagined. Thanks for hosting. ~CJ

  22. Susan BetweenNapsOnThePorch says

Emily, they also have a really large square one, too…in addition to the smaller individual popcorn containers. Gotta love the dollar store.

  23. Susan BetweenNapsOnThePorch says

    Thanks!

  24. Kicking myself for passing up on buying those popcorn containers last week! I hope they still have them, because my grands would LOVE this table!!! Wonderfully fun, Susan!

Thanks for hosting TT, but I'm not sure I like this new time. I would have been out the door, shopping by now!!!! LOL

    Hugs,
    Rett

  25. Susan BetweenNapsOnThePorch says

Thanks, Pam! I bet there are lots of fun things that could be done with those. Hope so…I have a lot of them now. lol

  26. Susan BetweenNapsOnThePorch says

Thanks Shanee, based on your comment, I took out my "regret" statement that I had used those there. Thanks! 🙂

  27. Susan BetweenNapsOnThePorch says

Isn't that truth! A cozy fire in the fireplace and a cushy sofa make for a perfect movie night. Thanks, Cindy!

  28. Jacqueline says

I love the red and white pop of color! Who wouldn't love sitting at this fun table. I know my grandkids would be running and yelling when they came in and saw this fun table! Have a great day.

  29. Alycia Nichols says

This is really cute! Kids would be super psyched about eating their dinner at a table like this! I love the tickets tied on as napkin rings…VERY different and fun! I immediately thought of the big reels as chargers, too!!! I think they would work out just fine if you put a small smear of that rubber glue in a couple of strategic places to keep the plate from sliding around on it. The rubber glue can be easily peeled right off after! Another alternative would be to drop a couple of those flat glue dots on there. They peel off really easily, too, when you're done.

  30. Susan BetweenNapsOnThePorch says

Reba, thanks so much for your wonderful words! Today's tablescape pics were all taken with natural light coming in through the breakfast room windows. I just use additional light when I'm shooting in the family room or dining room, mostly. Actually, with my new camera, I haven't needed it in the family room lately. The new cameras are amazing…they have great sensors in them that really soak up the light. I don't create 52 tables a year…but I do a good many. You can click on the "tablescapes" heading at the top for picture links to some I've put together in the past.

  31. Denise at Forest Manor says

This is such a cute, colorful table Susan. I love the napkins and the centerpiece. I'm always up for a night at the movies — movie popcorn is my favorite!!

Thanks for hosting and have a great day.

    Denise

  32. Susan BetweenNapsOnThePorch says

Alycia, that's a great idea for securing the film reel chargers! Love it!

  33. the cape on the corner says

oh my gosh, LOVE this! i have those pop corn containers and a super large one that could work for a centerpiece. the tickets are just killing me!

  34. Susan BetweenNapsOnThePorch says

Rett, bet they still have them…go back! Our store had lots including a large container for the bulk of the popcorn.

  35. Liz@A Dish Here, A Glass There says

Oh this is so cute! I love the theme! I like the idea of a film reel for the charger but not terribly useful afterwards! Your centerpiece is so fun and colorful! Love the roll of tickets idea and how you used them. Very artfully done! Great post!

  36. Cynthia @An Accomplished Woman says

Such a cute table… How cute for a double date movie night too!!! I may have to find the Williams Sonoma Popcorn bowl.

    Cynthia

  37. Heather L. says

    I love it! Too cute!

  38. AshTreeCottage says

Such a fun tablescape and it makes me really hungry for popcorn!

    Hugs,
    Susan and Bentley

  39. Spectacular, Susan! One of my 4 teenage Treasures(grandkids) has a birthday in April and finding something different for teens is a bit harder than small children. We have lots of plastic popcorn buckets from Disney World and I'm thinking maybe framed photo of a favorite movie at each place. Movie Night at Nana & Pawasie!

PS…..I have some old gray vinyl placemats tucked away in the bottom of the piesafe that would work for movie reels. Maybe make a paper pattern and cut them with an exacto?

  40. Chari at Happy To Design says

    Hi Susan…

What an absolutely adorable table! I love it! You named this table for children but I think any adult would love dining here as well. Of course, the large candy centerpiece caught my attention first…it's awesome! I love how you added a few "sprigs" of tickets to the centerpiece…very creative, my friend! Thanks so much for sharing this fun table with us today. And…thank you for hosting another sweet TT party for us.

    Warmest wishes,
    Chari

Something always comes along where I think wow, I could have used that.

  64. ❁Velma ~Down Our Country Road❁ says

What a cute idea! This would be so much fun for a slumber party or a birthday party. I'm definitely pinning this one. Maybe my daughters might do something like this for one of their kids.
Or better yet, I might do it when the grandchildren come to spend the night!

  65. Susan BetweenNapsOnThePorch says

Ellen, Thanks! I found the cake cover/top at HomeGoods a couple of years back…TJ Maxx had it, too. The base came from Marshall's, again about two years ago. They weren't a matched set but I thought they worked great together…the cover and the base. The base was made by Dept. 56 if I'm remembering correctly. Check on eBay…search for Dept. 56 cake plate. I can't remember now if the lid was made by Dept. 56 or not.

  66. Susan BetweenNapsOnThePorch says

Thanks, Sunny! I just never grew up…lol. I know you have probably figured that out by now. 🙂

  67. Susan BetweenNapsOnThePorch says

Thanks! Someone mentioned in the comments that the dollar store has the ticket stubs. If you can find them, you can create this table for even less.

  68. Susan BetweenNapsOnThePorch says

Cherry Kay…we'll definitely use the French Countryside goblets. 🙂

  73. Susan, where did you find the movie clapper?

  74. Susan BetweenNapsOnThePorch says
