Christmas Home Tours & The Start Of Creating A “Theater” Room In The Basement

Welcome to the 828th Metamorphosis Monday! Happy Monday! Hope you had a great weekend! It was a really busy one here with Christmas festivities and home tours. We lined the streets of our community with paper bag luminaries and it looked really beautiful! Unfortunately, I had a gigantic limb fall off the tree in my front yard a couple of days prior. It was out on the curb awaiting pickup—kinda bad timing for illuminating the road (and the limb) in front of my house. Ha!

I was excited to see our community has a Christmas Home Tour each year. I love going on those so much at Christmastime! There were supposed to be 5 homes on the tour, but one canceled, so there were just four in the end. This one was one of my favorites from the tour. The docent told us that when this house was renovated, they removed the old paint on the outside all the way down to the wood. I love it when that is done because it leaves such a beautiful finish and gives the outside of the home a fresh start for the next 100 years. The inside was beautiful with coffered ceilings in several rooms. Stunning home!

This home was my other favorite on the tour. I had driven by it earlier when looking for the location of another home and had thought how beautiful it was, so I was thrilled when I realized later in the tour that it was actually one of the homes on the tour! Love the dormers across the top and that beautiful round front porch. The interior was beautiful, too!

BEFORE/AFTER: Creating a Movie Room A few weeks back I shared in a post that I had purchased this sectional for my basement here in the Dollhouse. I’ve never purchased a sectional/modular sofa before—I normally prefer a sofa, along with a few chairs when furnishing a living/family room. But the Dollhouse is challenging me with a lot of new opportunities, especially since my main goal of furnishing the basement is to create a fun area for my grandsons, ages 8 and 10, to enjoy when they are here visiting. Also, I’d like to make that space a great spot for watching favorite movies or Georgia football games, something I know my son, DIL, and grandsons would love.Velvet Sectional, Great for Movie Watching

The description/ad for this sofa described it as feeling velvet-like. That sounded perfect since I wanted a sofa that would be great for snuggling down on movie night, something that felt a little luxurious. This sectional can be broken out to be a sofa with two separate chairs, but I envisioned it staying in this configuration most of the time for movie night.Amazing Storage in Velvet Sectional

The sectional arrived in 7 very large boxes. I had them delivered to my garage and when the UPS guy arrived, I opened the garage door using the app on my phone since I was still in Georgia at the time. I arrived back to the Dollhouse a few days later, cartwheeled the big boxes inside through the garage door, and slowly slid them down the basement stairs as I walked backward down the stairs.

Assembling the sofa was not hard, took about an hour doing it by myself. Most of that time was spent attaching the feet.

Here’s how the sofa looks in place. I will probably scoot it over some if I find we are using the fireplace. So far, I haven’t done that. Initially, I had it pushed back against the wall but all the back and side cushions are designed to tilt back for relaxing/movie watching, so my grandsons helped me move it out a few inches so the back cushions near the wall could tilt, too.

It does feel very luxurious, just as I hoped it would. This sofa comes in 4 colors: Black, Blue, Green, and Gray. The deep blue color felt very movie/theater room-like to me, so that’s what I chose. Since it’s modular, the sections can be arranged in a lot of different ways. The middle piece at the very front is an ottoman, so it can be pulled out and away leaving two chaise sections on either side with the middle open. Or, it can be broken out to be a sofa with two separate chairs. In the reviews, folks mention adding a memory foam topper when using it as a spare bed. It is definitely large enough to do that. (This modular sofa is available in 4 colors here: Sectional Sofa in 4 Colors.)

All the different sections easily interlock so they don’t move around when it’s in the configuration I have it in, but they are easily separated, too. It does feel scrumptious! Velvet like fabric for sofa

The storage under each cushion is awesome and easy to access! My grandsons were super excited about helping fill those storage areas with games and toys. They insisted on folding up all the throws and tucking them inside, except for one throw that the youngest decided to fold “the way Mom does” and place it across the arm of the sofa.♥

It also got the “Grandson Stamp of Approval.” Ha! Now I just need to choose a TV. I went TV shopping and was prepared for the cost of a wide-screen TV, but once we added in all the accouterments, including a soundbar, sub-woofer, etc…, the price went up a lot! I’m still trying to decide if I really need to go the OLED route—not sure I would notice the difference once it’s in my home. I think I may wait until after the new year to see if the prices come down a bit more once all the new 2025 models start coming out. I want an 83-85 inch TV since I have the space and would like an “immersive” experience as much as possible. Best Buy came out a few weeks back and measured. They confirmed that an 85″ would be perfect for the distance the sofa is from the wall where it will be mounted. If I ever make up my mind on a TV, I’ll share the one I choose for this room. I had it narrowed down to the 83″ LG G4 OLED and the newish, very bright, 85″ Sony Bravia 9, then chickened out when I saw the total cost. Arghhh! It adds up very quickly! Any suggestions?

  1. Love the sofa. And I know whoever uses it will love it too. Kids could spend all day on/in it!! Thanks for having us over. Have a wonderful week.

  2. Love your new sectional, it’s going to be well loved by all! Thanks Susan~

  3. Hi Susan!
The new sectional does look comfy!! Did you price tvs at Costco? It might less expensive and they offer longer warranties!

  4. Susan,
That sofa looks so comfy and the fabric does look like velvet….I did have to chuckle though because in the configuration that you have it in, I was picturing myself both crawling into it and then trying to crawl out of it!!! LOL!!
Thanks so much for hosting this charming party!!! I truly do appreciate it as I do know the time involved with it….I hope you and your family are well!!
    Hugs,
    Deb

    • lol Yes, there definitely would be some crawling involved whenever it’s in its current configuration. Ha!
Thanks, Deb! I hope the same for you and your family!

  5. Your grandsons are adorable, and I’m sure they will do a wonderful job of breaking in your new sectional. I foresee lots of movie nights in your future!
Just a suggestion about the timing of purchasing the TV. I’ve heard that most retailers put their TV’s on sale at deeply discounted pricing just before the Super Bowl. That’ll be here before you know it!

  6. Hearing you cartwheel those boxes down the stairs assured me that you are super human!!!! Is there anything you won’t tackle? I admire your spunk so much! Love the sofa! Blue is my favorite color and it is so cozy!!

  7. I was going to post what Debbie posted! Best time to buy a TV is in January right before Super Bowl.

  8. Yup, I agree with the others who mentioned this…..wait for the Superbowl sale if you can. I am pretty sure you don’t have to be member to order from Costco, but will have a slight upcharge??? May be worth the membership to buy the tv though. Happy Holidays Susan!

  9. Oooh such a pretty home tour! And your basement theater room looks like so much fun – what a great space! I can see why your grandsons love it. It’s so cozy! It’ll be even greater when you get the screen in there. Hoping for an excellent after-holiday sale for you! Thanks so much for hosting!

  10. Love the sofa and your grandsons are so cute! One question though, where do three adults sit? Are you going to get a few comfy chairs? Maybe a recliner or two? I agree to wait until after Christmas and before Super Bowl. I think you will find some great prices.

    • Thanks so much, Denise! You know, I was thinking last night, I may end up adding a couple of more sections to extend one end to make it kind of an L shape. Or, when my son/DIL are here, if they prefer I may take it out of its current configuration and make it a sofa with two chairs. Just have to see what works the best depending on who is using it and what they prefer, I guess.

    Susan
Get the LG OLED, we have it, and a friend came over and commented on the clear quality of the brand name.
I had a handyman hang ours on the wall.

  12. Noticed the VHS tapes on the shelf. VHS works on analog televisions. The new smart televisions are digital and can’t play the VHS tapes because the signal is different.

    • Really? Awww, that’s a shame. I have been saving those because when my grandsons in past years visited me in Atlanta, they loved watching some of the classic movies from my son’s childhood. I think a few of them are no longer available to stream or rent. I wonder if there’s a way they can still watch some of those?

  13. We purchased an OLED TV last year for our basement rec room and love it! It doesn’t distort if you are viewing more from the side (which was key in our setup). The picture is amazing; the crispness is especially striking (Star Wars openers in space are next level with the stars on a black background). The only negative I heard is that they don’t do well in a lot of ambient light. Not a problem for us in a basement. Good luck on your hunt!

    • That is exactly what I heard about OLED TVs, too. I do want that good side angle viewing just in case we need that sometime, like during football games. OLED is really known for its black blacks.
The Sony Bravia 9 is a mini-LED and it’s known for being very bright and the blacks are almost as black as OLED. The weird thing is, when I was in the store, there were times when Bravia 9 almost felt too bright. TV shopping is hard! lol Thanks for sharing how your OLED is working Heather! That is great to hear! It may be a little bright in the basement during the daytime, I’m surprised by how much light comes in the window that’s above the sofa. I may have to install something in that window to block off the light since it is directly across from the wall where the TV will go.

Susan!!! Where DO YOU GET Your energy??? I’ll have what you’re having!! (It all looks…stunning!!) franki

  15. I’m so enjoying your new adventure in Ohio. We went to Eufaula, Alabama last weekend to their Christmas house walk. I was prepared for long waits at each home like at the Marietta house walk, but we walked right into each house. There was a total of 8.

    • That’s awesome! Yeah, the Marietta is so popular each year, you do get some lines occasionally. My favorite for the Marietta tour is the combination tour where you see a few of the houses by day, then we always stop for dinner on the square, then see the rest of the houses by candlelight after dinner. I love that!
Pam, Madison and Washington Georgia have great Christmas home tours. I bet Newnan does, too, although I haven’t done one of their Christmas tours before. If you love seeing old homes, check out the two tours the Georgia Trusts holds each year. They are amazing with sooo many homes to see on the tours!

  16. Thanks for hosting, and we have a huge sectional for TV watching in the basement and playing games, love it and would never have anything different there. UPSide is the color will hide anything and the kids can enjoy it while you smile and not have to clean it.!

  17. I love the sofa. I know you have some Nora Fleming serving pieces. I hope you have the Georgia football helmet too. It’s a must for snacks while watching Georgia football.

    • I need to bring my Nora Fleming things up to the Dollhouse. I do have the Georgia Football Helmet mini! 🙂 lol Thanks for reminding me about it, Lin!

  18. Michele M. says

Oh I bet the home tours were so wonderful!!!! We do the lights in paper bags things too here but no tours. Love the new modular and the boys smiling says all you need to know you chose wisely. Sorry about the big branch – doesn’t matter. Glad it didn’t fall on car or home!

    • I was so lucky that it didn’t fall on the house! Thankfully, it was on the opposite side of the tree. I couldn’t believe how heavy it was when I dragged it to the curb, it would have done some damage for sure if it had fallen on the house. Thanks, Michele! They really do seem to like it. 🙂

  19. Did the home on the tour hang their wreathes the way you do? lol That is a very comfy sofa with lots of storage. How in the world do you manage manhandling those big boxes without getting hurt! I’ve used your cartwheeling trick several times! We have LG and Samsung TVs that are holding up well as far as brands go. We are like using Roku to access everything. I think you said you didn’t watch much TV. I got hooked on Kathy Bates in Matlock. The Dollhouse looked very pretty at night.

    • I’ve seen a lot of homes here with the wreaths on the windows. I have everything I need to do them here, except the wreaths! I have the bows and the ribbon and the windows will lower. I may visit Hobby Lobby today to see if they have wreaths that will work for my windows. My windows are such different sizes, gonna be tricky choosing the wreaths.
I need to check into Roku, I don’t fully understand how those things work since I haven’t had a TV in ages. Thanks for mentioning that, Kathleen!

  20. I’ve found the best prices are on Super Bowl weekend. We also got free delivery and set up that weekend.

  21. If your son is handy at hanging the hanger on the wall and mounting a very large TV, then Costco is the way to go. Great prices but no installation or delivery. Also, those TVs get heavy when you’re hanging them on the mount, so it can take two people. I absolutely love my Sonos sound system. It is designed to be mostly wireless, you can set speakers around the room without having to run a cable, they just need electricity. It’s extremely simple to install. I use it to play music in the background other times when it’s not on the TV station. Definitely a good purchase. That room looks divine. You just need one of those popcorn makers that looks like the movie theater, a fridge with drinks, and some candy treats. Perfect.

  22. Peggy Nodine says

What a great purchase!! Looks like the boys will love spending nights and long afternoons with you and enjoying that beautiful sofa. They will love this room, especially when you get your big screen tv installed, movie nights, games nights, just lounging nights with snacks, books, games, everything little boys love to do at Nana’s house.

I'd love to hear from you! Please leave a comment!
