Decorating for Halloween, Mice on a Staircase

Welcome to the 91st Metamorphosis Monday!

I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but there seems to be a mice/rat infestation going on around Blogland.

Halloween Rats on Staircase

I bought these a few weeks ago but just had a chance this weekend to open them up and play today. My staircase has gone through an interesting metamorphosis.

With the light in the entry on…

Halloween Rats on Staircase

Here’s how the staircase looks with the lights off and just the front porch lights on. I love it this way! I need to move to Ohio and decorate a staircase there for my grandchildren! I would love to see their faces when they came home from school to this staircase.

Halloween Rats on a Spooky Staircase

I love Halloween, it’s always so much fun and so many laughs!

Rats Playing on Halloween Staircase

You can’t have mice without a mouse hole. lol

Halloween Rats, Staircase

Yikes! Even the candy isn’t safe!

Rat after candy on Staircase

I hope these guys are reusable because they are really making me laugh each time I go up and down the stairs. Update: They came off easily after Halloween so they can definitely be used again.

Lighting the way to the front door for Halloween night…

If it isn’t raining on Halloween night, I think I’ll move this outside to the outlet that’s near the front door.

  3. Christi @ A Southern Life says

What a fun post. I think my message on the fridge would be "Beware, contents may cause unwanted consequences!" Love the rats on the stairs. Too cute!

    Christi @ A Southern Life

  4. Momma Button says

Love the rats! I put them on my stairs yesterday!! I'm lovin' Martha Stewart this year. I love how you've decorated your stairs.

  5. Though I don't celebrate Halloween, I do think those little mice silhouettes are pretty cute! Thanks for hosting!:)

  6. Hi Susan! Oh, how cute! Those little mice are darling and I'm glad they're just stick ons! 🙂 I've seen them on another blog too.
Love all of your little Halloween touches.
Again this week, I'm stretching my Met Monday post. Hope you won't fire me!! Now your kitchen looks like it would be perfect for my Heart of the Home Party on Wednesday! I hope you'll come.
    Be a sweetie,
    Shelia 😉

  7. I've been reusing the Martha Stewart rat silhouettes for a few years now with no problem. I just have to put a new double-sided sticky dot thing on the back every year (the old ones are removed pretty easily).

  8. The rats are too funny on your stairway Susan!!! So cute!
LOVE the little night light too.
    Happy decorating to you.
    Debbie@houseatthelake

  9. Susan. . . this is adorable! Your home is so beautiful, so warm and welcoming. . . like an English country estate. These little bits of whimsy are an adorable touch of fun!

  10. Karen- The Graphics Fairy says

Those Rats are so much fun! What a clever idea for a staircase!! Thanks for hosting.

  11. One Cheap B*tch says

  14. ~Country Lady~ says

Ohhh, I do not like mice or rats…but yours are so very cute. Thank you for hosting this delightful weekly event.

  15. Confessions of a Plate Addict says

Oh, Susan! How fun is that!! One question…is it driving Max crazy? lol Happy week!…hugs…Debbie

  16. Susan (Between Naps on the Porch) says

Debbie,LOL I haven't noticed when he's going up. Since they aren't moving, I don't think he pays them much attention. 🙂 The candy bowl was in his way. When he comes down the stairs, he likes to stay right up against the wall. So, I moved the candle bowl to the other side. 🙂 I haven't paid any attention when he's going up…I'll have to watch him and see what he does. 🙂

  17. Diann @ The Thrifty Groove says

All of these Halloween decorations are just too much fun!

  18. Susan,
Your stairs have metamorphosized! Wow! What a great idea.
And the fridge, and the nightlight..looking good!

  19. Silhouettes are a great idea. I made some evil eyes for my octagonal window this year. At night when the light shows through black posterboard, it's a great effect. I just bought a mousetrap cheese board. I think you may need one, too.

  20. Love the staircase. I really like that owl on your fridge too! Very cute. Thanks for hosting.
    Sherry

  21. tales from an oc cottage says

Oh! Those are cute! I know they are supposed to be "creepy" but they look look like they should be singing "Cinder-relly, Cinder-relly" in a Disney movie!

    m ^..^

  22. I guess if I did not have real rats and mice to contend with, I would find those cute, but I do and so I don't…..
I do fall decorating around here, not into Halloween, but do love pumpkins, sunflowers, straw bales, wheat, and fall leaves.

  23. the cape on the corner says

love the rats on the stairs! soo cute. do you think it ruins the paint or anything on the stairs when you take them off. i don't have white risers so i don't think it would look as cute if i did it.

i have a birthday giveaway going on if you would like to enter. stop on by!

    http://www.thecapeonthecorner.blogspot.com

  24. The rats look sort of cute but since I have a rat-phobia, there won't be any at my house!!!! I like cute ghosts & witches rather than scary!!! Everything your way looks great!

  25. Sarah @ Thrifty Decor Chick says

LOVE them Susan — all of it! I couldn't resist posting my mice too. 🙂

  26. Oh Susan! Every time I see those mice I want to rip the carpet right off of my stairs so that I can do that too! Just so cute! Maybe next year??? 🙂
    Vanessa

  27. Susan (My Place to Yours) says

Susan, you do enough Halloween decorating for both of us! You're obviously having fun. I'm not into that, but I have to admit that the rat silhouettes are a cute idea. 🙂

  28. Love the rats. Years ago I cut mine out by hand before Martha had them ready made. Everybody at my Halloween Party loved them. I forgot to remove one of them until a guest found it months later! Too funny!
    Cheers!
    Rita

  29. Yvonne @ StoneGable says

  31. I love the rats!! I purchased them this year too, couldn't resist! I don't have wonderful stairs like yours so mine are scattered around the kitchen baseboards!! Your house is adorable!!

  32. ♥ Sonny ♥ says

    Love the fridge art..

  33. Even thought I'm not a big fan of Rats and Mice….those are CUTE! You have such a good idea and arrange things so cleverly. Happy Fall Ya'lL!!!

  34. Your stairway looks fabulous!! How festive! Joining Met Moday again, thanks for hosting!

  35. My little girl (who was looking over my shoulder while I looked at this) wants to know where the cat is?

  36. Brambleberry Cottage says

You've done such a fantastic job arranging the mice, Susan! Living on a farm, in a remote area, I have enough of the real thing running around the barns, so I think I'll just enjoy your faux rendition. 🙂

I don't celebrate Halloween…just do fall things but I think your rats are so cute.

  44. Oh Susan they look so very cute…especially the one in the candy bowl. These lil mice really caused a stir this Halloween season. Yours look great, I have to jazz up my stairs now:) I have the mice as you know, but they need to get into a little mischief!!~

  45. I'd LOVE to have those fun mice on my stairs…..one problem….I have no stairs…..somehow adding a second story so I can have stairs with mice on them might not be something my hubby would go for….you think?! So cute though! Toni

  46. A Hint of Home says

I've seen those before. They are just too cute!
Love the pumpkins on the stairs with the mice.
Your front porch looks great, too!

  47. Fifi Flowers says

LOVE the mice on the stairs!!!

  48. Those rats are so cunningly made, and the positioning going up the stairs and into the candy is delightful. I have to admit, I'm rather creeped out by rats, so it's not a theme I care to try. Kudos to the bat (I think) on the door, tho, I'd do both that and the owl on the fridge.

  49. Low Tide High Style says

Wow you are all set for Halloween! I love those little mice silhouettes…too cute! And that chalkboard is darling!

    Kat 🙂

  50. Rachelle @ Adventures in Creating says

  53. Very cute! As I climbed the stairs I don't know if I would remember the mice/rats are "fake" I'd probably jump each time!

Love all your fun stuff from Colonial Candle! You are all set for Halloween.

    Mary

  54. luluslovlies says

I love all of it, very clever and cute, Have fun on Halloween! XOXO Marilou

  55. Gayle from Southern Thresholds says

Love the rat display…I wonder if Martha will have a line of Christmas mice as well? I think that would be adorable but maybe just two or three…

  56. Janet - Birdland Treasures says

The stairs are fantastic – they'd make ME laugh too! Thanks so much for creating "Met Monday" every week – so many wonderful ideas!!

  57. Hi Beth,
I don't love rats in the house, but yours are lovely. I hope they will not invite the rest of their living family for the Haloween party.
    Wish you a nice time.
    Greetings, Johanna

  58. Cap Creations says

Awe your stair case is so cute! I love it!

  60. Okay, am I the only one whose skin is crawling with seeing these rats all over the place?? Eeeewwwww! Makes me shudder just to think about it. I don't care if they ARE fake…gross!!

Now the chalk board on the fridge & that cute nightlight are adorable but you can keep the rodents, thank you very much. LOL ~~squirm~~

  61. Thank you for hosting this every week!

  62. I love all decorations, thanks for hosting:)))
    Greetings from Europe, Biljana

  63. Two years ago a dear friend of mine spotted those rats in the Martha Stewart Living magazine. She then hosted one heck of a party with lots of food and wine and waited until everyone was full of both. Then passed out black construction paper and sissors along with a few patterns she had made and turned the evening into a "rat cuttin' party". We had a blast!! The best part, the following year she changed her decorating theme for Halloween and I was the recipient of all those wonderful rats along with her Dollar Tree black crows. I love them and my friend!!
    Fondly,
    Ann

Your stairs look adorable!! I think I might have to get those. Might make my dog a little crazy but the kids will love it!

  66. Hi Susan, your home looks spooky good. I really like the rat peeking into the candy dish. (Love the dish btw.) Your huge arrangement on the front door is gorg.

  67. Susan, love your display. I like some others am not big on Halloween decorations but your mice are just too darn cute not to like and the way you displayed them is perfect.

    Thanks for sharing.

  68. I luv the Rats! Too funny! I really luv the Trick or Treat bowl, do you remember where it was from? It all looks great! I live in the South too, I find it a little hard to prepare for fall when it is still so warm outside.

  69. Susan (Between Naps on the Porch) says

    Hi Laurie,
Thanks! 🙂 The bowl is from Colonial Candle, also. Unfortunately, it isn't available this year.

  76. Cute rodents! Is that an oxymoron???

Seriously, I once lived in a house that had a problem — and I can't bear them, even if they are just cute and fun.

I think I would have called them mice…sounds less creepy! Whatever you call them–rats or mice–they look great on your staircase! Your door basket looks wonderful and I see you decided not to change a thing, except for adding a bit of Halloween fun to it and the topiaries! Good for you…it's your door and you know best!!!
