When I sat down to write this BNOTP library post, I couldn’t remember exactly when I had purchased the book I’m sharing this evening. I looked it up on Amazon and it was on February 19th of this year.
Seeing that made me smile because it made perfect sense. I was undoubtedly looking for some relief from the cold, drab days of winter, a reminder that summer would be here again in all its vibrant beauty. It’s the perfect book to share as a follow-up to this morning’s post.
In the BNOTP Library: Essentially Lilly: A Guide to Colorful Entertaining
Author: Lilly Pulitzer
Hardcover: 192 pages
Book size: 10.3 x 10 x 0.8
3 Things I Like About This Book:
- Lilly Pulitzer was known far and wide for her ability to throw a fabulous party and make it look effortless. This book is filled with lots of beautiful photos of pretty tables, party decorations and actual pictures of parties as they are occurring.
- Lots of recipes for party foods and party drinks. I’d love to try some for a future party.
- If you’re a fan of the clothing, you will want this book. There are some wonderful pics of Lilly from the early days when she was just getting started and the book goes into some of the history of how the Lilly brand came to be. I loved seeing all the Lilly clothes on real people, too. This is definitely one of the most cheerful, happy books you’ll ever own!
Pssst: This is also one of those books that looks beautiful without its dust jacket. The cover is the same as the dust jacket. Love that!

So far every book that you’ve mentioned I’ve picked up at the library. (Two are waiting for me.) But the Lily books I have and LOVE them. I have tried a lot of the recipes and have yet to be disappointed.
Pattie, that’s good to know. I will definitely try some of the recipes this summer. Thanks for letting me know!
I live in south Florida, the home of Lilly P and this is one of my favorite entertaining “go to” books. All of the recipes are to die for and do not skip the lacy parmesans – a one ingredient wonder. Enjoy!
Glad to know the recipes are good. I will have to check this book out!
Just ordered it and the Holiday one also. Sounds like a book I would enjoy. Thanks Susan , love your selections. Many I had and they were my favorites too. Than ordered some of your other choices and I love them. Need more self room!
Everyone seems to have fun in South Beach!! franki
Back in the late 70’s you couldn’t go to a party here in Southampton without seeing a sea of Lilly! Dresses for the ladies, slacks for the men. My dh wouldn’t wear the bright prink and green, etc, but I loved it. The store here has closed and you don’t see so much of it anymore, but it’s a classic!
Oh Kathkeen, I would loved to have been a fly on the wall and seen everyone dressed in their Lilly wear, including the guys! It’s still going strong here in the south, the Lilly store was crawling with folks when I visited about a week ago.
Well, Miss Susan, because of your BNOTP Library, I have had to enter a 12 step program and the children will have a decorating library to fight over instead of $$$. Hope you’re happy! I am. Loving this new Lilly book, going to have to snatch up a used copy. I, seriously love your posts, they brighten my day, every day! Thank you.
LOL!!! That totally made me laugh out loud! Well, I can think of worse things to enter a 12-step program for! 🙂 Thanks, Kathy!
Looks like a fun book! I love her fun, cheerful style and I am always looking for new entertaining tips!

The cover is gorgeous, this is another must have!
Susan,
If I am not mistaken, wasn’t Lilly a personal friend of Jackie Kennedy during their college days at Vassar?
Ann, I think they did meet in school. I couldn’t remember the name of the school but Wikipedia says it was Chapin in New York. Does that sound right?
Susan.,
It might be. Thank you for the clarification. I love everything about the Lilly Pullitzer merchandise, btw!!!!
Me, too! I had seen it through the years but hadn’t look at in ages. I love the fabrics and colors. I’m listening to her biography now via Audible and it’s a fascinating story how she started her business. I’m on Chapter 10 right now and she and her husband, Peter, have just divorced. Been listening while I’ve been cleaning out closets today, sure has made that job go a lot faster.
I love this book! I’ve reread it several times over the years and it always inspires me. Your post about it makes me want to pick it up again now. Thanks, Susan! 🙂
Julia, I bet the name of the book is pretty special to you, too although it’s not quite spelled right. 🙂
You’re right, Susan — it happens to be one of my favorite names. 🙂
