Chris Madden, The Soul of a House, is the first book of Chris Madden’s that I ever purchased. I liked it so much, I immediately ordered two of her previous books. Isn’t it wonderful when a book is so good, you can’t wait to buy others by the same author. I love that and I do it often when I find an author or designer I really like.
In the BNOTP Library: Chris Madden The Soul of a House: Decorating with Warmth, Style, and Comfort
Author: Chris Casson Madden
Hardcover: 208 pages
Book size: 12.2 x 9.4 x 1
3 Things I Like About This Book:
- This book takes us inside Designer/Author Chris Madden’s two homes: a 100-year-old carriage house in New York and a mountain getaway in Vermont. I would be hard pressed to say which home I liked best, both are beautiful!
- Lots of big pictures that fill the pages along with lots of great closeups so you can really see the details. Love it when there are lots of close-ups. Rizzoli is the publisher and I’ve never been disappointed with one of their books.
- Book takes you room-by-room through Chris Madden’s homes and there’s also a tour of her beautiful garden and a few recipes/ideas for entertaining outdoors. This book has that cozy feel that some books have. Rooms are warm and inviting.

I have this book on my list to buy. I figured I’d like it’d too. Sounds like you enjoyed it so I’ll have to get a copy.
It’s a good one, Liz! 🙂
Hi Susan-
I love Chris Madden – I use to watch her on HGTV – I was so sad when she was no longer on.
She always had the best advise – – I will have to get this one… Looks great.
Have a wonderful weekend…
Thanks for sharing this post…

I never saw her on TV, Rose but I wish I had after reading her book. Talented, for sure! Thanks! Have a great weekend!
I checked out the Amazon page, and boy is this house beautiful! I can see why you like her book so much. If the preview is great, I can’t imagine how beautiful the whole book must be. Thank you for such good book recommendations.
Have a wonderful Saturday.
They are both beautiful homes…I really love her style of decorating, too. Thanks Mary! Have a awesome weekend! Hope you guys are having gorgeous weather, too!
I want to come visit YOUR library!! franki
Hi Susan,
I have discovered like others that you mentioned that I am not getting your blogs and another one that I
subscribe to Dear Lilly. I have tried to do what you told us to do but it keeps saying that my password is
wrong and I can’t do anything. I’m not going to change my password because I’m luck to remember it as it
is since I’m too old. Everything I do is thwarted. I hate YAHOO. They never leave anything alone. If you get
used to something they change it and mess everything up.
Thanks,
Goldie
ps guess I will just have to google your blog name to get it.
I adore Chris Madden. There are so many designers that I miss on HGTV… Chris, Michael, Kitty B
I sure do agree with Angie..I miss those grand designers from early HGTV..so much talent and class..wonderful advice.
Sounds like a wonderful book 🙂
I like Chris Madden too..her linens are so elegant looking..but pricey for my budget. Remember Lynette Jennings and Christopher Lowell..I loved all of them..Don’t care too much for the new designers.
We are thinking of moving to northern Virginia and building a new house, but the whole planning process sounds overwhelming. What books would you recommend to help us get started?
Kathy, I’m not that familiar with any books about construction or house plans. Southern Living used to publish house plans occasionally.
I had almost forgotten her from HGTV. Ahhh, those were the days! I still watch it but it’s not as grand as it used to be. I will check out her books.
I like Chris Madden, she once had a show on HGTV and it was great. I can not tolerate ivy growing on a house, we once had a house with ivy covering the front facade and there were snakes in it all the time. We removed a portion of it and discovered the brick was ruined by the ivy left behind. GGRRR!
