Incredible Kitchen Renovation: So Many Beautiful, Functional Designs & Features!

Welcome to the 877th Metamorphosis Monday! I am so excited about the wonderful kitchen renovation that I’m sharing with you in today’s Before/After Metamorphosis Monday post! You may recall that a few weeks back, I shared Heather’s beautiful guest bath renovation in this post: Beautiful Guest Bath Renovation.

Sink in Guest bath, after renovation

Heather and her hubby just completed a major kitchen renovation that is both beautiful and functional! Heather put together some wonderful side-by-side Before/After photos that I’ll share toward the end of this post, but for now, let’s check out all the beautiful details that went into this renovation!

Beautiful Kitchen Renovation and Makeover

Before the renovation, there were large soffits across the ceiling between the kitchen and breakfast area. There was also a small, decorative column at the end of the counter that looked way too small to be a support column. It actually looked more like a stairway baluster, so not sure why it was there initially. Now that the whole area is beautifully open with a wonderful unobstructed view to the outside. Before, a single pendant hung down over the peninsula. That area looks much more complete now with two lovely pendants overhead.

Wonderful Kitchen Renovation, Lots of Hidden Storage

Originally, the cabinets in this kitchen were lower, but those were extended upward for additional space. I love it when cabinets go all the way up to the ceiling—the more storage, the better! Notice the cabinet to the right of the refrigerator.

That cabinet provides hidden storage for the microwave, coffee maker, and toaster. I love it when a kitchen can be both functional and beautiful. This kitchen makeover definitely accomplishes both of those goals!

Appliance Cabinet Added During Kitchen Renovation

Heather chose GE Cafe appliances for her refrigerator and stove. Do you see the dishwasher? I love how it’s hidden away and blends in beautifully with the cabinets.

Here’s where the dishwasher ended up. Great location since it’s right alongside the sink.

Heather went with soapstone for her countertops. I love the natural look of the subway tile. Rather than going with an all-white subway tile, Heather chose a design with subtle, neutral shades. So pretty, and it pairs beautifully with the soapstone countertop. No space was wasted during this renovation… love all the clever hidden storage!

Hidden Storage for Cooking Oils and Spatulas

How did Heather make use of this area of the kitchen? Notice the cabinet doors on the left and the narrow door toward the right side of the photo. What will we find behind those doors?

The cabinet doors on the left open to reveal a spacious pantry for groceries.

The narrow closet area opens to a utility closet that’s perfect for brooms, a vacuum, and cleaning-product storage. I love this dedicated cleaning/utility pantry!

Let’s check out the dining area just off the kitchen.

Beautiful and Functional Kitchen Renovation

Kitchen Makeover, Functional and Beautiful

As we walk toward the dining area, we pass by beautiful, built-in cabinetry that’s perfect for displaying dinnerware or special collectibles. I would love to do something similar to this, where the desk is located in my small Butler’s Pantry. Heather said her husband and his friend refer to this area as the “Trophy Case.” Ha! I love how the guys worked this lovely display area out in their brains to something relatable.

Built in China Storage and Display

Heather replaced a small table with a built-in dining banquette with room for a 60-inch table and custom storage benches. I was just thinking, if the original owners of this home could see this kitchen now, I know they would be amazed by how much larger and more functional it is after this renovation. So many great improvements!

More sneaky storage—this area was designed for pet food storage.

Here are a few more great comparisons Heather shared of the changes and improvements that were made during this wonderful kitchen renovation!

Thanks so much to Heather for sharing photos of her incredible kitchen renovation! The planning that went into this renovation was nothing short of genius! I love how this wonderfully updated kitchen shows that kitchens, no matter the size, can be both beautiful and incredibly functional.

Beautiful kitchen transformation! I love all the new storage areas.

  2. That was a wonderful kitchen renovation! Having gone through that myself I can just imagine how happy Heather is! Everything looks beautiful, functional and shows great thought to detail. It just goes to show a small space can be made to be just as lovely as a huge kitchen. Great job. I love the soapstone countertop and the utilization of space. I always find that fascinating what can be done to make things more functional. Love the dedicated cleaning supply closet too! Brilliant, oh and the dog food storage! Thanks for sharing.

  3. Such a fabulous kitchen renovation! So much functionality in a beautiful renovation!

  4. One of the prettiest kitchen renovations I’ve seen. Functional, but still maintained the charm and doesn’t look industrial. Love how she kept the island and countertops uncluttered.
Love all the new light fixtures. Pretty and updated, not old and dated (like mine) or modern. lol.
The china cabinet is lovely. A minimum of collectable pieces and not cluttered looking. The pantry and cleaning supply closet are fabulous.
So much attention to detail. I love the trim around the windows, making it the focal point and not window treatments. Nothing but lots of natural light.
A very relaxing and beautiful kitchen.

  5. That’s impressive and beautiful. Kitchen renovations are expensive. They saved thousands by DIYing. I love all the hidden storage areas. What a difference. Did they change the flooring too?
Knew I should have taken shop back in the dark ages.
Susan, did you find a way to close up the kitty holes ?

    • Hi Myra- thanks for the kind words. Yes, we changed the flooring. After we found one corner dropped off by 1.5”, we had to add self-leveler, too. That was a fun change order!

I’d love to say this was DIY, but we know our limits. We did the demo ourselves down to the studs with the help of a lot of friends. My husband also did some of the plumbing work. Other than that, we had some great tradespeople to make it happen.

Now THAT is one Met Monday, wow wow wow! Her kitchen is perfectly designed. I am soooo impressed and so happy she shared that with you/for us!

I love everything she chose – so smart and so nice looking. Well done, Heather!

  7. Hella kitchen reno, Heather! Smart, clever ideas with gorgeous finishes. It must be such a pleasure to use and especially to show off

  8. Love this kitchen renovation! Excellent use of space and storage.

  9. Beautiful! My favorite is the little drawer above the trash can! That must be such a lovely place to hang out now. Well done! Thanks to you and Heather!

  10. Wow, this is beautiful Heather – you must be just delighted with how everything turned out. Love all the storage and the soap stone is gorgeous! Happy cooking in your new kitchen and thanks for sharing Susan.

  11. Lovely! Very functional, pretty and cozy. I would like to know if Heather made these design decisions herself, or if she had a professional designer or architect help. I very much like all the storage. I bet she and her hubby are loving the changes. Thanks, Susan and Heather.

    • Thanks, Pam. I booked a session with a kitchen designer I follow on YouTube (Mark Tobin) to review my layout and run my ideas past him. He was very helpful especially with the lighting design. Other than that, these were all my decisions after research and curating a giant Pinterest board over about 3 years.

  12. What a beautiful kitchen redo. I love seeing the kitty peeking ‘round a corner of the pantry cabinet!

I think some of these ideas would translate really well to the Dollhouse. And, you have the necessary kitties to add just the perfect touch to any pics!!

  13. Hello! What makes that lower drawer designed for dog food storage, please? What features does it have that make it suitable for that purpose? Thanks!

    • Hi Lodi – all the cabinets are solid maple finished with a clearcoat. My cabinet maker wanted to be sure the interior of this drawer was easy to clean up and no chemicals would off-gas into the food. Originally, the plan was to line it with formica but that didn’t work. Instead, he used a different membrane on the bottom of the drawer and a safe sealer for the sides.

      • Ah…thanks so much. I thought you’d identified a material that made the contents extra mouse-proof or something! Thanks again!

I'd love to hear from you! Please leave a comment!
