Before we get into today’s post, I wanted to share the results of my recent appointment with an orthopedist who is a hand specialist. He took a look at the X-rays from the ER and said that the 4th metacarpal on my left hand is broken. I wasn’t surprised since that’s the area that is swollen and still hurts. Actually, several spots on that hand still hurt, but they are all gradually getting better. The orthopedist took another X-ray to see if the bones had shifted out of place, and thankfully, they had not.

So the PA I saw in the ER, who felt sure my hand was broken due to how badly swollen it looked, was right, despite the radiologist’s report that stated nothing was broken. Since finding that out yesterday, I’ve been wondering if I should stop back by the radiology department at the hospital to let them know that the break was missed. It’s so obvious on the ER X-rays, even I could easily see the jagged line across the bone when the doctor pointed it out to me. My visit to the ER was on a Sunday morning, so maybe a less experienced radiologist got stuck working the Sunday shift. Would you go back by the hospital to let them know that it was missed? I feel like I should do that in case it helps prevent a broken hand bone being missed in the future.
I have been seeing some of the best sweaters this fall season! Last winter, a YouTuber I occasionally watch shared this sweater that she had just purchased. She was wearing it and I loved the design! Of course, when I clicked the link, it was completely sold out. I typed in my email to be notified when it was back in stock, and I just got the notice a week or so ago. I need to order it before it’s sold out again. You’ll find it available here: Adorable Sheep Sweater.

I am pretty obsessed with everything I’m seeing on the House of Bruar website. Some of their clothes are a bit outside my budget, but others are much more reasonable. I love this sweater; in fact, I love just about every sweater I’ve seen on their website. The clothing they carry is exactly what I love! This beautiful Fair Isle sweater is available here: Beautiful Fair Isle Sweater.

Their wool beanies are very reasonably priced, as compared to the prices I have seen on other sites for all-wool beanies. I love this one that’s knitted in the Fair Isle style. You’ll find it available in a few different patterns/colors here: Fair Isle Wool Beanie.

L.L. Bean has some of its flannel hoodies on sale. You’ll find 15 different plaids available here: Flannel Plaid Hoodie in 15 Different Plaids. They all look so cozy!

You know my obsession with the mountains and my fantasy dream of one day buying a cottage in a mountain community. Even if that dream never comes true, at least I can wear the sweater, right?! lol I need this sweater! You’ll find it available here: Wool Mountains Sweater.

Love this jacket! It is currently on sale with the code BREEZY. You’ll find it available in two colors here: Quilted Plaid Jacket. A lot of things are on sale 50% off right now, so check out some of the fall-winter clothing while you’re there.

What a great animal print cardigan! The colors are so neutral, I think it would go with just about anything! It is currently on sale for around 50% off. You’ll find it available here: Fuzzy Cardigan Jacket/Sweater.

This plaid shirt would be great to wear underneath sweaters this winter. I love a pop of bright color, especially when it’s plaid, peeking out from underneath a sweater at the collar and the cuffs. You’ll find this shirt on sale and available in 23 different colors/patterns for way more than 50% off here: Plaid Shirt.

Not a sweater, but I love the design of these flannel sheets! Such a pretty plaid! You’ll find them on sale here: Flannel Tartan Plaid Sheets.

Thanks for your patience with my odd posting schedule this week as I’ve been working around kitty vet visits (for vaccines) and orthopedic visits. Happy Fall Sale Shopping!

if you have, where have you found DEEP POCKET FITTED KING FLANNEL SHEETS?
I need a minimum 15″ depth and I would like a quality flannel sheet
Company Store and LL Bean have not come through
Rebecca, check these out: https://southshorefinelinens.com/collections/deep-pocket-sheet-sets?filters=Size,King
I don’t know anything about that particular brand, but they seem to have good reviews on their website. Check out the reviews to see if they sound legit and like real reviews before ordering, though.
Susan, my husband is a diagnostic radiologist and according to him, the attending physician will generally notify Radiology if there is a “missed finding.” Rest assured that the Orthopedist that you saw will be contacting whomever missed the break. In my husband’s practice, all radiologist are required to peer review one another. I have a L.L. flannel hoodie and it is so cozy.
That is good to know! Thanks for that info, Susan!
I need one of those L.L. Bean flannel hoodies!
It’s so unsettling to think that if an obvious fracture could be missed, it’s no wonder how many difficult diagnoses are too. I hope that mountain sweater is on it’s way to you (a gift to yourself for the boo-boo). It is adorable with the dotted section under the mountains.
I love that part of the sweater, too! Such a pretty design!
I sure do hope someone informs that missed diagnosis by the radiologist. Yikes.
And I am sorry you are “broken!” but there’s nothing quite like shopping therapy to cure those ills, eh? Cute stuff – not my style but always adore what you share because it’s always so YOU. ♥♥
Shopping therapy! lol I could use some of that right now.
I’m not sure about your particular case but years ago I was told by a doctor that some fractures can take a few days to show up on radiology. I had suffered a stress fracture of my foot at the time. Very frustrating though.
The orthopedist originally showed me the break on the x-rays from the ER. I had gone by and picked up a disc as they had requested and brought them with me to the appointment. You could clearly see the break on the x-rays done in the ER. He did do additional X-rays though to see if anything had shifted or moved. He didn’t know why they missed it.
Not all breaks are visible at first. Some don’t show up with regular xrays. Broken bones can shift after a break, and then show on xrays. That is why they say come back if it is still bothering you, or refer you to an orthopedic doctor. This from a 30+ year radiologic technologist.
The orthopedist was looking at the x-rays that were done in the ER when he saw the break, he had not yet done x-rays in his office. So it was very visible even on the x-rays done in the ER. He didn’t know why they missed it. When he showed it to me, I could clearly see it on the original ER X-rays.
What did the orthopedic doctor do for you ? Brace ? If you were so inclined, you could notify the state about an error. We have a radiology center that makes multiple errors and some doctors won’t send patients there. I have a calcification they found over 40 years ago. This facility missed it three times.
Fell better.
They tried a brace on it, but it hurt so badly, like imagine having a break in your hand and someone squeezing your fingers together. It was extremely painful, so I couldn’t wear it.
Sorry that happened, Myrna! Scary that things do get missed.
Thanks!
Sorry to hear your hand was broken but at least it’s been diagnosed correctly and can now be fixed. Hope it heals quickly. In high school, I knew 2 girls whose mother could knit a sweater just like the Fair Isle sweater in 1 week (we called them Ski Sweaters back then). They’d buy wool Villager a-line skirts and the mom would knit matching sweaters. They were always so beautifully dressed!
Thanks, Margaret! Wow, how lucky they were to have such a talented mom knitting for them! Sounds beautiful!
I have shopped the House of Bruar for quite some time and I have to add that they are great to do business with. They ship very quickly and the merchandise is beautiful! I have purchased several of their cashmere sweaters and I am very pleased with them. I especially like that I can use Amazon pay to complete my transactions. Easy peasy. I am sure you will be happy with your sweater.
Glad you were persistent in getting your hand injury diagnosed. My dad had a break in his ankle misdiagnosed at age 62. He limped for the rest of his life.
ER Sunday morning says it all really.
Susan, so sorry you do have a break. I would definitely report the misreading of the x-ray. As far as a brace, if you are required to wear one, keep searching for another one with the doc’s office help. My husband just got through wearing a finger splint for 8 weeks but the first one they gave him was painful. The second one was way better. Maybe a better option is out there for you too!?!? And, I love the plaid hoodie….so cute and holiday perfect!
Susan, I’m sorry to hear about your hand. Thankfully someone did catch it and you can take care of it appropriately. I would check back with the orthopedists office to see if another size or fit of brace would work unless they told you it was optional. The sweaters are beautiful and I checked out the website. I read the shipping policy which states that import taxes and duties are not included in the final price. Unfortunately that definitely makes me hesitant to order at this time.
What I would love is a brace that is soft on the inside but firm enough to keep it straight. The brace they tried to put on it was like a torture device. I think there’s a market out there for braces that are firm but soft on the inside so they aren’t painful to an injured hand. I think I will look for something like that online.
Ugh, I’ve never ordered from them, just love the look of their clothing. I wonder how much the taxes and duties are. I was thinking that you only pay taxes/dutes if an item is over $600, or maybe it was $800…hard to remember now. That’s what I’ve been told a few years back about ordering a handbag from another country. I wonder if that’s true for clothing.
I have been to the House of Bruar in Scotland many times. I love that store!
Susan, I’ve ordered directly from companies in Europe and never had to pay duties on the purchase. I don’t remember ever spending over $600 in one sale. I guess what I actually I had in mind was whether the exemptions still apply and tariffs are also another concern. I’m not sure where or how those would figure into the equation. I guess none of us really understand it at this point.Let us know if you order the sweater and how it works out. Good luck.
Left a comment on your window box post but now I see you weren’t on the mend after all. Yes, I would definitely report that the radiologist missed your break–after all, that’s his/her job to know! I won’t even get started on how many problems we’ve encountered with our own medical issues. It’s really such a travesty how sloppy some people are, especially when it’s health related. The sweaters are adorable. I’ve never heard of this company. The one w/ mohair may be very itchy (I remember that from my 1960’s mohair sweaters) unless they have a process that eliminates that. Rest up and feel better soon. Hugs!
Susan, where do you buy the gorgeous porcelain lamps with matching finials? I even bought one, and still can’t remember the name of the company!
I think I know which ones you’re talking about I bought at least 5 lamps from a company on Amazon called East Enterprises. You can see one of the lamps that I purchased here: https://amzn.to/4qqq1sL .
It doesn’t appear that they are still selling lamps on Amazon now. They stopped a long time ago. the last lamp I purchased from them was in July 2024. I think they stopped selling on Amazon that year. Their prices on Amazon were great and so much less than regular retails stores. My favorite lamp that I purchased from them was this one: https://amzn.to/4qqq1sL . It’s in my guest bedroom. They may have a website somewhere online. I really liked their lamps and that the shades were NOT all drum shades. I’m so tired of companies selling every lamp with a plastic drum shade. I wish they would start selling again on Amazon.
Susy, I did buy one porcelain lamp since I moved into the Dollhouse, and it was this one: https://amzn.to/4nq2WDU
You can see that’s store’s Amazon page here: https://amzn.to/3JqF3hu
They seem to still be selling on Amazon.
