In The BNOTP Library: Nell Hill’s, Rooms We Love

I’ll be back a little later today to share a home I think you will find intriguing, fascinating and haunting. At least, that’s the effect it had on me when I toured it in Natchez, Mississippi a few weeks ago. In the meantime, I’m sharing a book I purchased recently that I’m so enjoying! It’s by Mary Carol Garrity so of course, you know it’s going to be good! I’ve never been disappointed in one of her books.

Nell Hill's Rooms We Love by Mary Carol Garrity

3 Things I Like About This Book:

  • This book is written in a slightly different format than what you may be used to seeing. Each chapter starts with a one page introduction/summary and the pages that follow are filled to the brim with pictures. In the corner of each picture there’s a paragraph or two explaining the details of the room. It makes this an easy book to pick up, read, set aside and jump back into later when time allows.
  • Filled from cover to cover with beautiful rooms. You won’t find any cavernous, soul-less spaces in this book. All are wonderful, cozy and feel like rooms where real people live, not decorator show houses. There are plenty of close-up views…love that!
  • The interiors beautifully show that classic, traditional style doesn’t have to feel dated. Love how antiques are mixed in with new furniture, including some painted pieces. Books is divided into 5 main sections: Functional and Fabulous, Color Changes Everything, The Comfort Zone, The Big Picture and Romancing the Room.

  1. Must purchase!! I JUST MET Mary Carol (a design goddess in my book!!) and toured her MOST FABULOUS store (design paradise) in Kansas City, MO. It was the treat of my trip and she is just as nice as can be. Someday, I hope to return!! franki

    • Oh, Franki…I would love to visit her shop! I was drooling over her winter bedding ensembles this past winter. I may have to make a trip up there this fall/winter to see it all in person. Love her style! So glad you were able to go and just a little jealous! 🙂

  2. I am lucky enough to live in KC so I’ve been to both Nell Hill’s stores many times. It’s always worth the trip! I have most of Mary Carol’s books as well, and this one is one of my favorites.

  3. Also, trying not to be spammy here, but since there are some Mary Carol fans in the comments, I did a couple of posts about her house when I toured it last fall: http://creatingthislife.com/nell-hills-day-trip-mary-carol-garritys-atchison-ks-home-part-2/

  4. Mary from Virginia says

I am so glad you reviewed this book. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to buy it. If Susan @BNOTP says it’s good, then it is!

I love your book series, even though I don’t always comment.

Hope you are staying cool. Is your porch finished? The heat index here is 101 today, but we are expecting big storms this afternoon.

  5. The cover alone looks inviting!

  6. Sounds like I would love this book, Susan. I wish so much I could get to one of her stores but doubt I ever will, sadly. Thanks for the review!!!

  7. Yet another one that draws me in. I purchased the “Waterside Cottages” book after your review and, somewhat fortunately, before I can order a next must-have, you’ve posted yet another winner and I can’t decide 🙂
Loving the book series–what a great idea.

  8. Love Nell Hill’s too! I was thrilled to be able to stop at the Kansas City store on my drive home from Denver. It is heavenly….beautiful “stuff” everywhere. Every room we went into, I’d say, Now this is what I want. Needless to say, I don’t have enough space for all the pretties I saw there. But I do believe this book will fit in my space just fine…and as someone else said, if you say it’s good, it must be! Thanks for sharing. It’s really not a bad drive…if you want to plan a BNOTP reader road trip:)

I'd love to hear from you! Please leave a comment!
