I made a rather big purchase for the basement in the Dollhouse recently. As I was thinking about that choice this morning, it reminded me once again how so many of the choices I make when decorating a room are guided through raw emotion and fantasy. I know that sounds weird, but some rooms do that to me—immediately bringing a scene into view, like a motion picture playing in my head where I can envision the fantasy becoming reality.
Obviously, a lot of factors have to be considered—like the size of a room, and how it will be used (bedroom, kitchen, etc…) but after that, my heart takes over and the choices I make, be them good or bad, tend to be based on the movie I have playing in my head and the “feeling” I want to create for the room.
This is how the basement was furnished by one of the previous owners of this home. I really like this layout for a living room, since it creates a nice conversation area, but ever since I first saw this room, I’ve had this vision of turning it into a cozy theater space where we can all curl up under big, soft throws to watch a great movie. It will be a place where drinks and popcorn are allowed, even encouraged, and where spills are not a big deal because the only goal is relaxing, laughing, and spending time together.
It could also be a place where family gathers to watch one of many Georgia football games this winter. Or, it could be a space where my grandsons sleep over on a Friday night, and wake to watch cartoons on a Saturday morning. This movie I have playing in my head is a little crazy because it’s coming from a woman who never watches TV and hasn’t had cable TV in many years. I don’t even own a TV! I guess I’ll need to do something about that since the current TV in this room is very old (per my son) and may not even work.
So, following my heart, I recently bought something I never thought I’d ever buy—a sectional sofa! That decision was partially made for me by the design of the basement in this 1938 house. The small opening going down the stairs into this room completely precludes buying a regular sofa—a sectional is the only choice for this space. The sofa and chairs seen in the previous photos in this post all break down into smaller sections. When I donated them to a young couple who were just getting married, I was amazed at how they came apart into individual pieces that could be carried out through the small entry into the basement.
This is the sectional I chose after ordering samples of the fabric a few months back. It will be arriving sometime next week. It has 4.7 stars after 385 reviews and I’m hoping it lives up to its reviews. This photo doesn’t do it justice, based on the photos I saw in the reviews. It looks so much more plush and velvety in the reviews, which is exactly the vibe I’m going for in this space—something that feels cozy and a bit luxurious. It comes in 4 colors and I chose navy since that color was giving me cozy, movie-theater vibes. The price was already pretty great, but once it went on sale, I decided it was time to go for it. (Sectional is on sale in various colors and configurations here: Sectional Sofa/Sofa Bed with Storage.)
Though the two side sections toward the front can be pulled out to face back toward the sofa like the seating configuration shown in the first photos of this post, I envision keeping it as you see here the majority of the time. Or, maybe not—maybe I’ll save that configuration for movie night. Several of the reviews recommend purchasing a queen-size memory foam mattress topper, saying those work great for converting it into a spare bed when you need extra sleeping quarters. (Mattress toppers are available here: Mattress Topper.)
I love, love, love all the storage! Since my main purpose for the basement is making it into a fun haven for my grandsons, this should be a great place to store board games, throws, books, and other goodies we’ll use in this room.
One of the reviewers mentioned that if a disaster befalls one of the sections, a new section can be ordered instead of having to replace the whole sofa. I love that! I have no idea how much I’ll personally use this sofa since there are so few movies that I enjoy watching, and again, I really don’t watch TV. Maybe that will change if I have cable connected. I have no idea what’s out there these days, need to do some research on that. Maybe I’ll find it to be a great place for reading, not sure. I’ll share more as this room develops over the next few weeks/months.
Another great sale that’s going on right now is a Naadam! You may remember some of my previous posts about the wonderful cashmere sweaters that I’ve bought from them over the years. Right now, they are having an awesome 40% off sale. You’ll find the sale here: 40% Off Cashmere. They are also available on sale in a variety of colors here: Cashmere Sweater.
Naadam is currently doing something I’ve never seen them do before—Limited Edition Holiday Collabs. I fell hard for the Grinch collab with the embroidered Grinch. I purchased a red cashmere sweater for myself and another one as a Christmas gift.
I’ve always loved the movie, How The Grinch Stole Christmas, so I couldn’t resist this sweater! They are also doing a “Peanuts” Limited Edition Collab, too. There are a lot of different characters featured in all of their limited edition collabs, so it was hard to choose from all the colors/characters! You’ll find all the Limited Edition Collabs here: Limited Edition Collabs. The Snoopy one is adorable, too!
Did you know that Amazon has a Pre-loved Luxury Section?! I had no idea! If you are in the mood to treat yourself to a special handbag you’ve always wanted, you’ll find the handbag Black Friday deals here: Pre-loved Luxury Handbags.
If you’re in the mood for a set of beautiful china for your Thanksgiving or Christmas gathering, this 12-piece set of Lenox Holiday is currently on sale for Black Friday. I love this pattern so much—I need to use mine this winter! You’ll find the Black Friday Sale for this stunning, gold-rimmed holiday china here: Lenox Holiday on Sale.
Happy Early Black Friday Sale Shopping!
That sofa looks like a wise, versatile choice. It reminds me that my parents had a sofa that opened for storage under the seat. That is where Mother kept the good china until she got a big hutch. Every holiday, we would retrieve the “good” china, get out the silver, wash and polish, and set the tables.
What a wonderful memory, Nan! I bet there were some fun stories and discussions while that was being done. Those are some of my favorite memories from the hoidays, when we are all just together working, preparing and cleaning up afterward.
Seems like such a smart purchase, especially for that room. Love that brighter navy color too. (sometimes navy is hard to tell from black). I predict that sleepovers will be epic!
I hope so, we’ll soon know. I love the color, too!
This sectional is genius!! And there’s storage? What a great find, perfect for grand kids! I admire how thoughtful you are to detail. Not my strong suit, but I’m working on it.

I do love that extra storage! Thanks, Wendy!

Hi, I really think you will love your sofa and also you may just surprise yourself about watching tv now being around your grandsons. It would be a nice place to read a book. The Lenox Christmas dishes are so nice I bought them and matching items for my daughter, and she loves them I think she is spoiled just a little.
I will probably give cable a try and then disconnect it if it’s still how it used to be. I don’t care for movie channels like HBO, etc… since there are so few movies I enjoy. I typically don’t like the popular movies that everyone else seems to like. So whatever TV I buy, may just get used for watching movies I already own or for streaming the occasional movie.
Ha! So much fun spoiling our children and grandchildren! ♥
I know you are not a big movie or tv buff but it will be different with the boys. I am sure they will want to share their favorite movies and shows with you. That will be a much different experience than watching it by yourself. Plus, you can play games on the newer big tvs (I think). It is so wonderful that you will get to spend so much time with the boys. Time flies and before you know it, they will be going away to college. Savor your time together. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving.
I know, it’s scary how fast it goes by! Thanks, Lin! I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving, too!
I can completely relate to your ‘movie in your head” scenario! Over the years, when buying our homes, if asked “how would you use this room?” or “can you see yourself living in this house?”, my husband would reply,”ask my wife what she sees in her head!” He’s said this to an architect & contractors when planning renovations too! I can honestly say that when I’ve followed “what’s in my head”, I’ve never been disappointed! And you can never go wrong planning with your grandchildren in mind!
I so agree, that seems to be how it normally works for me, too! It’s like you have a dream, not just an idea of how you want it decorated, but a whole movie playing in your head where you can see it being used by family and friends. It was that way when I added on my screened porch. Thanks, Merri Jo! You’re so right, it’s so much fun creating spaces I think they’ll enjoy!
