Reminiscent Of That Time I Caught Influenza-A While Traveling In Germany

Welcome to the 905th Tablescape Thursday! I don’t have a tablescape to share, but please join the blog party if you do. I am sick with a really nasty flu. It’s a doozy, reminiscent of the time I caught Influenza A while traveling in Germany.

I’ve been running a fever—not sure what it was the first day since I didn’t have a thermometer, but it was 102.4 after one was delivered yesterday. I will spare you all the gruesome details, but it’s been awful. At least this time, I have had access to over-the-counter medicine, unlike when I was on a riverboat in Germany. Advil seems to help the most. I hope you haven’t had the flu this winter, and I hope you do not get it! I think this is going to be a rough winter for it.

Looking forward to the beautiful tables linked for this week’s Tablescape Thursday!

If you are participating in Tablescape Thursday, please be sure to add your permalink below, and not your general blog address. To get your permalink, click on your post name, then copy and paste the address showing in the address bar, into the “url” box when you link up. You’ll need to include a link in your post back to the party to link up and participate. That’s so visitors to your blog will be able to find the party and the other Tablescape Thursday participants. Requiring a link back also prevents businesses and scammers from linking up to sell their products. Please, don’t add your post name/blog name ALL IN CAPS…it tends to create big spaces between the rows of links. Please do not link up table settings that were just recently shared in the last few weeks for Tablescape Thursday.

You are invited to the Inlinkz link party!

Just an idea: My Mother’s Recipe…..A SOUTHERN TODDY..!! Whiskey/Whisky (depending on where it’s made)….Honey….Lemon….and a couple shakes of cinnamon. Recipe: 4 shots Whiskey…3 shots lemon….2 shots honey…some sprinkles of cinnamon to taste. Mix everything together in a Mason Jar and shake…shake….shake. Refrigerate and shake well each time you take it. Take a couple tablespoons each and every hour during your waking hours and then four tablespoons at bedtime. WORKS EVERY TIME..!! The Whiskey kills the bacteria…the lemon boosts your immune system….the honey is very soothing…!

    • That’s a great recipe! I’ll just bet I can make this up to keep on hand since there’s nothing in it that will spoil. I’m referring to just keeping it through the winter not forever! lol
I hope you get over it soon. Flu can be rough!

I got sick with the new K flu on January 4th. On 1-7-2026 I went to urgent care. I tested negative for the flu strain they prepared the flu shot for. I was negative to Covid and strep as well. They did a chest X-ray since I have had pneumonia before. I was prescribed antibiotics since I had so much congestion in my head and chest. I called urgent care back on 1-8-2026 and ask if they tested me for the new flu meaning the K flu and they said there was not a test for it. I was so sick with this new flu for 16 days. Day 17 last Wednesday I went in to see my PCP she had to prescribe another round of antibiotics due to me still having so much congestion my head. Had to see my cardiologist that afternoon he advised since I tested negative for the regular flu that the vaccine was prepared for to get flu vaccine in 2 weeks. He was concerned that I may get that flu strain. I will be praying for a speedy recovery for you.

  22. I remember you being sick on that river cruise! Tiny silver lining is that you are in the comfort of your own home. I’m am much impressed that you even posted something today and it was coherent!

  23. Connie Runkle says

Advice from an Urgent Care: Over the counter Mucinex DM loosens mucus and thins it out, increase fluids, heavy on the water intake, use a humidifier if you have one. Take hot, steamy showers, vapor tablets feel like heaven. Cough medicine for a cough, Tylenol/ibuprofen for fever, pain, headaches, etc. Broths, teas, electrolyte drinks, bananas, toast, rice, applesauce, chicken soup, Vitamin C (berries, citrus. grapefruit, oranges) Zinc (lean meats, nuts) 100% fruit juice, popsciles, plain pasta, crackers, yogurt and ice cream. Rest, stay warm and get better fast! Sorry you’re so sick. 🙁

So sorry to hear you got this awful sounding flu. My brother & his wife have had it the last two weeks–said it’s the most miserable flu ever! Cowgirl Diva’s advice is one my mom & grandparents did and they got over her flu within a few days with far milder symptoms. Don’t know the effect it will have on this new variant, but certainly worth a shot. Make sure to stay well-hydrated. Lots of cuddles w/ A & B will also help you feel better. Hugs!

  26. Oh I’m sorry you’re feeling so bad! Sending lots of healthy energy your way! Thanks for hosting anyway – that’s awfully sweet of you. Take care and hope you get better very soon.

  27. So sorry you are sick. When you are this sick, you don’t have the energy to take remedies. Just pull the covers over your head. Do you have a cartoon of chicken broth on hand? I really worry about the flu because I am high risk. Using Uber thru my insurance for medical appointments makes me nervous. What do they do? Transport sick people to the doctor. Back to the masks and hand sanitizer. A couple of years ago, I had RSV. The cardiologist that has a radio show said it’s outside in the yard. You get it in the air.Usually kids get it but adults are getting it now. Then I had pneumonia. Years before that I contracted whooping cough. I don’t go anywhere It’s the cat ! Or delivery packages from all over the country.
Wishing you all the best. Feel better.
Wish we were all closer to take care of you- and deliver the whiskey remedy.

  28. Nancy Brantley says

I’m sorry to hear you have the flu. You take care of yourself!

  29. Boy do I ever remember the trip and when you were so sick! When no posts were showing up it was so obvious something was going on with you. I was concerned!! Hope your fever reduces and the flu runs its course. No fun being sick.

  30. UGH!! It caught you…and not much one can do to NOT get it even w/ all the precautions. Time, I’m told…”It just takes time to work it’s way through.” Hang in there!!!!! franki

  31. I am so sorry you are ill. Get Well Soon, Susan. Hope the kitties give you the loving cuddles you so deserve as you recover.

  32. I’m so sorry to hear you are sick. The flu this season is especially bad. Please take care of yourself and get well quick!

  33. Susan, I apologize if this invades your privacy, but I definitely worried when you were to travel back from the German trip.
I believe I felt you might need access to oxygen on the flight. It was most alarming. I think they even chose to take one passenger from that trip to the
hospital. The relief of you reaching home was enormous. So I’ve a keen
appreciation for how ill you do become. Subclad K was not covered by the flu shot this year, as others stated it is harsh, & our zone has been charted as
    heavy infection. Please be especially
kind to yourself & do not push on when slightly tempted as you begin to recoup.
You remain in my prayers for comfort and a full recovery.

    • Thanks so much, Rebecca. I am pretty sure this was some version of Influenza A and it could have been that one. I am much, much better today, almost back to normal. You really appreciate how wonderful it is to feel normal after going through one of those evil flus. Thanks for those prayers, I know they must have helped. I hope you and your family are staying healthy!

  34. So very sorry you are unwell. I hope you turn a corner and feel better soon. Because I have asthma and am over 65 I always get a flu shot every year, just in case. So far so good. Prayers for your recovery!

  35. Oh Susan!, I’m so sorry you caught this crud! And with the cold weather it’s a double whammy. Praying you recover very soon!

I'd love to hear from you! Please leave a comment!
