In The BNOTP Library: Second Home: Find Your Place in the Fun

Have you ever longed for a second home, a place to head out to for the weekends or for a little vacation? The book I’m sharing today is one I purchased back in January 2008 when I was right in the middle of adding two porches to my home: a small front porch and a screened-in porch. It must have been the wonderful porch on the cover that drew me in, well that and all the great reviews.

Better Homes and Gardens Second Home

3 Things I Like About This Book:

  • So many great second homes to enjoy in this book including beach homes, lake houses, log homes and cozy, mountain cottages. This book may be a compilation of some of the best homes featured in Better Homes and Gardens up to the time when it was published because every home is magazine worthy.
  • Pictures are wonderful! A few of the rooms may feel a bit outdated but the vast majority are timeless and perfect. You’ll find warm, cozy cabin with fabulous rock fireplaces and cabin decor. You’ll also find plenty of white wicker, some amazing kitchens, and quite a few screened porches and outdoor spaces. The gardens are lovely, too!
  • This book also contains a lot of practical advice about deciding where and how to buy a second home, choosing one that’s right for  your budget and tips about renting out a home when you’re not there. At the very back of the book there’s a section where “Sites and Sources” are listed. Many of the shops listed are still in business today; I recognize their names.

  1. This looks like a great book to sit down with on a rainy day. I could wile away several hours conjuring up wonderful daydreams of beautiful homes with porches overlooking beaches on the gulf. Even after twelve years I still miss my Florida home. Maybe someday I will have another one, but until then I can dream. I was glad to see my Emails from you in my mail box. Everything seems to be straightened out now. Thank you so much for your help.

  2. Mary from Virginia says

You are going to have to buy another set of bookshelves!

I am amazed at your wonderful collection.

    • lol I still have a lot of space on my office bookshelves. I’ve only bought 2-3 new books this past year…mostly been enjoying the ones I already have. Each time I pull a book off the shelf to share for these posts, I end up wanting to read it again. It’s been fun revisiting my old friends once more. Good books are even better the second time around. 🙂

  3. Never in a million years would I have ever thought we would own a second home. After my hubby and I heard story after story of “woulda, coulda, shoulda” from our parents, nine years ago we dove in an bought a house in the mountains of NC. It is our happy place. We only get here a few times a year (from Fl.), and there is still LOTS to do, but we love it…and so do our family and friends. BTW Pinterest is my downfall……

  4. My parents had a second home on Cape Cod. We would go there on weekends when we could mostly during the summer months, but sometimes during the winter. It was a great escape for us and our growing family at that time in our lives. We miss it dearly!

  5. That view! I would put a day bed and sleep outside to that view every night in the summer and fall. Love it!
