Later today I’ll be taking you on a tour of a beautiful “new” old house at Between Naps On The Porch. As I was working on that post last night, I kept thinking the house looked so familiar. Then I realized why; it’s a home that’s been featured in one of my favorite books!
In the BNOTP Library: The Great American House: Tradition for the Way We Live Now
Author: Gil Schafer III
Hardcover: 256 pages
3 Things I Like About This Book:
- I can’t believe I haven’t already shared this book. The homes featured in The Great American House are really beautiful! I almost didn’t purchase this book back in November 2012 when I first came across it because the cover picture, though lovely, is kind of bland. I decided to take a chance based on the reviews and I’m so glad I did. The homes featured inside are all wonderful and the interior design/decoration inside the homes featured is warm and inviting.
- Remember when I featured the book Coming Home by James Strickland? This book, The Great American House reminds me so much of that one because both authors (Mr. Strickland and Mr. Schafer) share a love for building “new” old homes. They both care deeply about preserving and carrying the architecture, beauty and quality found in older homes into the future. I love that!
- Photography is stunning…you feel like you’re there in the room!
Foreword for this book is by another one of my favorite authors and designers, Bunny Williams.

Hi, I missed this book…My favorite all time cozy up with a cup of tea book is An Affair with a House. I will enjoy this one, thank you for the post. Happy Holidays. Mary
Oh Mary, I absolutely love An Affair With A House! It is def one of my all time favorites. I’ve about worn out the pages looking through it! lol
These book reviews are great Susan. I can get lost in one just in the brief peek available on Amazon.
I know…and for once, the preview is actually great for this book. So often the previews are terrible.
I have this book and love it!!!
