Toy’s Delight, A Fantasy Christmas Table Setting

Welcome to the 689th Tablescape Thursday!

Merry Christmas! I hope your December is going amazing and is not too stressful. I had a rather stressful day yesterday involving a delivery gone very wrong–can share more on that later in case you’re interested, so this table didn’t get set until very late last night. Some of the photos were taken last night but I was also able to snap a few this morning. I love it when I can take pictures in natural light since those always show the real colors and beauty of the dinnerware and other elements in the table.

Whimsical Christmas Table, Toy's Delight

I put together a whimsical centerpiece with toys and collectibles, most of which I’ve had for many years. The nutcracker was a gift from my son many years ago. The Teddy Bear was a favorite of his when he was little. ♥ I think this table would be a fun one for both adults and children.

Christmas Table with Toy Centerpiece

Remember the Cabbage Dolls from the 1980s? I think they look a little different now, although I haven’t checked them out in ages.

Cabbage Patch Doll from 1980's

Our holiday truck that’s bringing home the tree is driven by these two characters. Ha! They were a find in Target a few years back. I stopped by there a week ago and it was wiped out! People are doing their Christmas decorating and shopping earlier every year–have you noticed that? Truthfully, I kinda like that because it just gives us more time to enjoy it all, but ya gotta get into the shops early if you want to find anything new for your Christmas or holiday decor.

For this table I’m using my Villeroy & Boch Toy’s Delight salad plates.

This pattern is drastically marked down right now if you are interested in collecting a few pieces. For example, the salad plates are marked down from $42 to just $13.99! You’ll find that awesome sale here: Villeroy & Boch Toy’s Delight Sale.

Christmas Table Ideas, Toy Centerpiece

I’ve paired it with my favorite plaid/tartan dinner plates and beautiful pine/berry chargers collected a few years back.

Villeroy & Boch, Toy's Delight Salad, Red Border

Toy’s Delight is available in both a green border and a red border, a border that’s filled with whimsical toys. For my centerpiece, I used a few of the same toys found in the Toy’s Delight salad plates like the doll and the nutcracker. The plaid dinner plates you so often see me use are available here: Tartan Plaid Dinner Plates. I love those sooo much because they work in so many table settings. Plaid often acts as a neutral, the way it so beautifully pairs with other patterns of a similar color.

Villeroy & Boch, Toy's Delight in Green

You may recognize this tartan design since it’s the same one I have in my winter bedding. After all these years, I still love it just as much as the day I first saw it.

Art for the Bedroom

These beautiful pine/berry chargers are available here: Berry Chargers.

Reindeer napkin rings keep the whimsy going in this toy fantasy table setting. I think those are from Pier 1 back in the day, as were the green and red sheer napkin covers. The tartan napkins peeking out underneath, along with the tartan tablecloth, are available here: Tartan Napkins and Tartan Tablecloth.

If you are participating in Tablescape Thursday, please be sure to add your permalink below, and not your general blog address. To get your permalink, click on your post name, then copy and paste the address showing in the address bar, into the “url” box when you link up. You’ll need to include a link in your post back to the party to link up and participate.

That’s so visitors to your blog will be able to find the party and the other Tablescape Thursday participants. Requiring a link back also prevents businesses and scammers from linking up to sell their products. (Yep, that really happens, unfortunately.) If you see a post that’s not table-setting related, let me know and I’ll remove it.

Please, don’t add your post name/blog name ALL IN CAPS…it tends to create big spaces between the rows of links. Please link up table setting or table setting related posts only for Tablescape Thursday.

  1. Oh, Susan! You and your package delivery woes!

Oh a happier note, you’ve used some of my favorites in the tablescape. I remember when you got that vehicle, with it’s cute little wreath at the front. I love that you put in a little driver and passenger, lol! Those are some of my favorite chargers, so pretty. I can not believe the great sale on the Villeroy and Boch! Another favorite. And I always love to see the tartan.

But I hope today is a much better day! No more delivery mishaps for you, young lady. Just Christmas joy from here on out.

    • Have you ever ordered a piece of furniture where it fails to do the one thing it was created to do? I ordered a storage chest and there’s just one problem–one of the drawers is blocked and won’t open so you can’t actually use it for storage. Argggh! Thanks, Pam–I hope your Christmas is going smoothly! 🙂

      • Oh, the item isn’t working. Well, that’s a new and different development from your usual smashed boxes. 😛 I hope this doesn’t become a trend.)

I think sometimes drawers are secured so they won’t pop open in transit. But you’d think it would be evident so you could get them open. I don’t know. I hope you get it figured out. What a hassle to have to return! I hope it doesn’t come to that.

        • Check out the video I sent you–the drawer is literally blocked by the front piece that opens down. It’s just poor construction, which is shocking since it came from a really nice store. It looks like it was built by someone very new to building furniture, I think the hinges were put on in the wrong spot because you can see where they appear to have been moved and the wood was patched afterward, or at least that’s how it looks to me. I’m going to order another chest from another company sometime next year since it’s not a piece that I have to have–was just going to be my Christmas/Birthday gift to myself.

          • I saw the video. *Shocked face.* How does something like that even get by quality control? (Clearly, there is no quality control.) I just feel bad because it was your special little present to yourself. 🙁

Funny, because I was thinking of getting a chest – but a much bigger one. I’d like to get an old fashioned blanket chest if I can find one. Something very big with lots of drawers because we love our afghans and throws around here. 😀

Hopefully, the company will rectify that for you very quickly. In the meantime, you win the blogosphere for a piece of furniture that not only doesn’t work, it doesn’t even make any sense!

  2. Wonderful tablescape for all ages young and old! I like the VB plates and I would be tempted but I have two sets of Christmas China and I have no room to start a new collection! Merry Christmas to you and your family!

  3. Darling table. Your grandsons would enjoy that! Big people too! Love that truck especially. Have a Merry Christmas.

  4. Love that plate stack of yours, Susan. I’m using the Woodland and Berry apps in my tablescape this week for a forest fantasy. Heading into the weekend, hoping yours is a good one.

  5. Oh the truck driver & passenger are too cute!

  6. What a fun table! I love those VB plates and am very tempted to order some – but where would I put them? I guess I’ll stick with the ones I already have (which I also love!). Enjoy the season.

  7. Your table is so full of the Christmas spirit! The toys bring back memories of childhood when my sister and I looked forward to getting a new doll and a new tea set. My brothers always wanted more cowboy guns so they could play Roy Rogers and Gene Autry, who were stars at the picture show on Saturday. That was a long time ago! Love your table!

  8. Absolutely adorable! Your table beckons to the child in each of us (as well as any actual children you might have visiting for Christmas!). I’ve not seen the Toys Delight plates in an actual place setting — it may be my new favorite pattern!

  9. Such a fun table Susan – your creativity is amazing! I bet your son and his children would both love it! 🙂 Thanks as always for hosting this great party!

  10. Adorable Susan! I remember the year when the Cabbage Patch dolls were impossible to get! Your truck is so cute too, and what is better than a well loved teddy bear! Thanks for the holiday fun~

    • Oh my gosh, I remember that madness, too! lol I remember reading that people were getting in fights over them in the stores!
      Thanks, Jenna! Merry Christmas!

  11. Love this Tablescape, and your dish stack is OUTSTANDING: all the lovely plates coordinate so well. Have a wonderful Christmas!

  12. Oh my goodness Susan – who could ever forget those cabbage patch dolls! I remember the craze for them and there was such demand and not much supply. Love your table – perfect for young and old alike, as you say. Hope your day was better today and thanks for hosting as always. Merry Christmas to you!

    • I know, it was crazy how they were selling out the second they hit the shelves. The next craze I remember was Beanie Babies. lol
Thanks! Yes, got a lot accomplished today so definitely a good day. I hope yours was awesome, too!
      Merry Christmas, Kim!

  13. Bobbi Duncan says

A just too sweet table setting, Susan! I love the trio of plates you used; can’t tell you how many times I’ve wished you lived near whereby I could get your expert advice on pairing different plates. I’ve learned a lot from your blog, but will probably never be as creative as you. Sorry about the chest you ordered. It’s just soooo frustrating to receive something that is inferior when you’ve spent a good amount of time hunting the web. That is the one thing I dislike about ordering online. I’m really late w/ my Christmas decorating this year–just couldn’t get into it and then, when I could, rushed around like some speed demon. Still need to put the finishing touches on the Dickens village. Hugs!

    • Thanks, Bobbi! I know, I wish it had been local so I could have seen it first. Never dreamed they would ship me a chest with a drawer that won’t open. With trying different patterns together, really it’s just a lot of trial and error. When you try them together, you’ll know immediately if it works. I love the tartan dinner plates from William Sonoma– they seem to work with almost everything.
I would love to see pictures of your Dickens Village! Bobbi, I came across the most amazing Christmas Village collection on YouTube the other day. Here’s a link to it in case you want to check it out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZrBvGW8BZw&ab_channel=THECLOSET

  14. Susan, I love your Christmas Bedding. I too have that Tartan Plaid ensemble, but what pattern are your euro shams? I have plain black shams but would like to replace them with another patterned sham?

    • Thanks, Gina! The shams in the very back are Ralph Lauren “Duke Devonshire.” They were available quite a few years back. I don’t think they are still available unless you can find them on eBay. You can see a better picture of them here: https://amzn.to/3pNBVOY
I wish RL would bring this collection back, I wouldn’t mind picking up a few pieces from it.

  15. Susan your table is darling! Love the toys centerpiece.

  16. Such a fun tablescape! I love the tartan and the Villeroy and Boch patterns, and the toys add the perfect touch of whimsy.

  17. Love the toy tablescape. Thank you for sharing. Wishing you and yours a Blessed Christmas.
    MERRY CHRISTMAS
