Welcome to the 898th Metamorphosis Monday Party! In July 2022, this is how my garage looked. My home was 40 years old at that point, and the garage had never been repainted. It still had the same builder-grade lighting, and the concrete flooring was stained from 40 years of cars being housed here. It wasn’t a bad garage, but I knew it could be greatly improved.

During July and August of that year, the garage saw a big upgrade with new paint, much better lighting, and beautiful new flooring by the company, Granite Garage. I always like to mention their name when I share this garage makeover because they did an outstanding job. The flooring and the lighting are still my favorite parts of this makeover.

Unfortunately, after about a year, I started seeing some issues with the ceiling paint. There were places where the paint was cracking and coming loose.

There had been other issues with the painting when it was initially done. The painter had sprayed primer all over the ceiling without first covering the shutters, so the shutters had to be sanded and repainted. There were other issues, but I’ll spare you the boring details.

The painting company has come back a few times to redo sections of the ceiling that have continued to flake. Unfortunately, they didn’t have a stamping tool that matched my previous ceiling’s 1980s stamped pattern, but it wasn’t that noticeable unless you were looking for it. It looks like the original ceiling was not primed when it was first painted after the home was built. It never started flaking off, though, until it was repainted.

It’s taken a while to come up with a permanent solution. A while back, the painting company suggested scraping the entire ceiling smooth and redoing it. I liked that idea since it was obvious that this issue with the flaking paint was not going to stop. It’s taken a while to get that underway since I’m always running between here and Ohio, but we finally got our schedules together, and the work began on Friday.

The painters covered everything up before they began working, including the shutters this time.

So this is how the garage looked this past Friday, Saturday, and most of Sunday.

The painters finished yesterday afternoon, and here’s how the ceiling looks now. Ignore the pinkish shadows, have no idea why it appears that way in photos.

I sure hope I’ve seen the last of peeling ceiling paint! I wish all my ceilings were smooth, but what a tremendous mess it makes if you have them scraped and painted.

There’s a little dust left on the garage floor from all the scraping/sanding that they did. That will be gone as soon as I damp-mop the floor, which I usually do every few months.

Hopefully, this garage is really done this time! See the full makeover of this garage in this previous post: Garage Makeover with New Lighting, New Paint, and New Flooring. Looking forward to the awesome Before and Afters linked below for this week’s Metamorphosis Monday party!

Metamorphosis Monday: Metamorphosis Monday is a party that’s all about Before and Afters. Please link up your Before and After projects, like DIY projects, room makeovers, craft projects, and even recipes. Please do not link up Table Settings; save those for our Tablescape Thursday party on Thursday. If you are participating in Met Monday, link your post to the party using the “permalink” to your MM post and not your general blog address. To get your permalink, click on the name of your post, then copy and paste the address (that shows in the address bar at the top of your blog) into the “URL” box for InLinkz when prompted.

I’m just curious…..did you have to unload all those storage cabinets along the side and back when the epoxy flooring was done? That would have been a HUMONGOUS job. Hopefully the painters primed the ceiling before they repainted. Looking at your picture when it was chipping, it looked like they applied the material, paint right on plain sheetrock? Anyway…..hope it all works out well for you this time. Big job but good you had them redo it right.
Yup, I did that back in 2022 when the full renovation took place. It was a big job, but it was the only way to do it and do it right. Thankfully, that wasn’t necessary this time. Whew!
Looks amazing! I think you’re amazing tackling all these homeowners issues. With two homes it takes time, dedication and money.
Thanks, Maureen! I don’t want to get behind, so I try to take care of things as they pop up. I’m starting to understand why a lot of people build a new home as they approach retirement, so they don’t have to redo anything.
If I could, I would, especially with the heat and humidity here. The life expectancy of homes here are much shorter than colder climates. I had a problem with my garage ceiling because I had a roof leak and wasn’t aware of it. Glad you got that out of the way!
Leaks do so much damage so quickly, especially if they go on for a while. Me, too…glad to finally have a permanent solution!
We did the same for our garage floor and it looks nice and is easy to keep clean.
It is, so much easier than concrete. I wish I’d done it a lot sooner.
Garage looks live-in worthy! I remember all your adventures with those storage cabinets but didn’t remember that you bought more for the other wall and other storage areas,
Yeah, I think I bought those right before the renovation or maybe it was right after. They were a bear to move, even when empty.
Susan,
The garage looks good….Thanks so much for hosting this wonderful party!! I really appreciate the time and effort that goes into it along with visiting all the links!! I hope you are having a great week!!
Hugs,

Have an awesome week, Deb!
Susan the garage looks great! We had all our popcorn ceilings scraped and painted in 2020. We just left and spent a week in Branson, Mo! We had to take everything off the walls and move all the furniture from the living room and breakfast room to the dining room. No popcorn on that ceiling. It was a huge job but they were excellent and everything was all cleaned up. The ceilings look wonderful and in spite of moving everything would do it again.
They were really into stipling (or whatever this is called) back in the 80s. They seemed to have stopped that now, thank goodness! I wish I had thought to have all these scraped before ever moving in. Some folks install a layer of sheetrock over it, instead of scraping, but that does lower the ceiling a tiny bit. Less mess, though.
If I ever move and the house has that type of ceiling, I would want to get it done in advance of moving in. I know you are so glad to have yours done!
It’s been such an amazing transformation. The garage actually looks pretty! And if you ever sell, I’m sure such a clean, pristine garage will be a great selling point.
I have thought about getting that type of flooring for my garage, but I’m afraid it will be too slick. At this point in life, I certainly don’t want to fall. I wonder if they can texturize it with sand or something. That might help. Glad you got your ceiling fixed, Susan.
Mine has a lot of texture. They put two coats of the poly stuff, forgot what it’s called, over the top…that’s standard. A person can request more, but you have to sign a waiver because that’s when it can get really slick. You do need to be careful when getting out of a higher vehicle like an SUV if it’s been raining out. I usually keep a mat right where I step out of my SUV since some of my rainboots are slicker around on the front tip than others and that part of the boot can hit first when getting out of a higher SUV. Many years ago, when the floor was just concrete, I fell after walking out in leather slippers from L.L. Bean. They were so slick on the floor because they had gotten damp on the bottom, but I didn’t realize it. So you can also fall on concrete floors, too.
Looks great Susan, and you must feel relieved to have it done. And done properly. Happy happy Monday!
Wow! Sounds like they used a water based paint over an oil based paint. Scraping and sanding and then using an oil based paint again probably will fix it right up.
I’m desperate to get to my garage! Nothing has been done to it since we moved in 1977!!! You can only imagine how it looks. I have stippled ceilings and the seams are coming loose and I plan to have 1×3’s put up at the seam. I’ve seen it done and painted the same as the ceiling you don’t really notice it. My husband passed 12/24 and in January I had to have a new roof because of several leaks. Then the garage door completely broke and had to replace it. I’m hoping to get to the garage by fall. I certainly have learned a lot about home maintenance! lol and we actually have kept our home up.
