An 80th Birthday Celebration, Cowboy Style!

Welcome to the 794th Metamorphosis Monday! Hope you had a wonderful weekend! Sheri’s hubby, Mike, just hit a major milestone, so it was time for a big celebration! Sheri wrote,” We celebrated Mike’s 80th birthday in Cowboy fashion! We had a special guest, John Wayne, and enjoyed a real western hoedown day!

The table was set with cowboy plates and salad bowls, and mugs for our ice tea. We enjoyed a real cowboy dinner of chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, mac and cheese, hot rolls, and pinto beans, some of Mikes favorites. Dessert was a chocolate sheet cake (I wonder how many I have made over the years) and his favorite cherry pie, and cowboy cookies. I made all the decorations and had fun with the cowboys on the fence and the wanted poster.”

Sorry about the blurriness of this first photo, we weren’t able to get it to transfer correctly, but I think you can still it well enough to see how Sheri set this cowboy/western-themed table. Love the bandana tablecloth and the metal dinnerware—so perfect for a cowboy themed party! If you would like to recreate this look (I think this would be fun for my grandsons!) I found a set of 10 stainless steel plates available here: Stainless Steel Dinnerware.

Sheri said, “I made my table cloth from bandanas and the napkins were also bandanas tied with twine. We picked up the tin plates at garage sales and antique malls over the years, and the salad tins are actually small cake pans. Mike likes how cold they keep the salad. I used plastic baskets and gingham tissue for the hot rolls.” (Note: Mason Jar drinking glasses are available here in various styles, sizes and colors: Mason Jar Drinking Glasses. I especially like the ones with lids and straws.)

About her centerpiece, Sheri said, “I have several large, wood slices I use for centerpieces. We had a great time! It was hard to decorate with Mike around, but the day before he had errands to run, so was gone for several hours! I hurried, and he was thrilled and surprised with it all.”

Love the cowboy silhouettes in the windows—so clever!

Sheri set up a side table for the food, gifts and other “fixins” for this special 80th birthday celebration. If you would like to create a western themed party sometime in the future, you’ll find a lot of great western/cowboy themed decor and dinnerware here: Cowboy/Western-Themed Decor and Dinnerware.

  1. Hi Susan: Can’t join the link party – says it won’t be open for 10 hours…

  2. Wow! First of all, a very Happy Birthday to Mike! (And many more.) What a fun idea for a table! Sheri did a great job. The tin plates crack me up. So perfect for a cowboy to chow down from. Seems very authentic. I love the bandana as the tablecloth, as well as for the napkins with simple twine as napkin rings. And the cowboy silhouettes add such a nice touch. The side table with the little wood crate and lantern was cute too.

That must have been a fun hoedown. Susan, I agree, this would be a great theme for your grandsons someday. Thanks to both of you for sharing this fun tablescape.

  3. Happy Birthday to the cowboy on his 80th! A very clever theme!

  7. Happy Birthday Mike ! Glad you enjoyed the day.
What fun. Love the collection of cowboy items and theme you created. How many times have we passed up unique items because “we have too much stuff” and they are never to be seen again ?

I love everything about this! And what a pretty dining room!

  9. How fun! I love this table, and how great that Sheri made the tablecloth and napkins from cowboy bandanas – brilliant! Thanks for sharing, and as always, for hosting! Happy Monday!

  10. Sheri, You really pulled together the cowboy theme! The cowboy cutouts were probably my favorite. I’ll bet your husband had fun! Great inspiration for the Shady Lady Saloon and Poker Party I’m working on for a friend’s birthday.
