Silk-Wrapped Bulbs For The Dinining Room Chandelier & Updated Dish Storage

Welcome to the 836th Tablesape Thursday! When I last shared the dish storage here in the Dollhouse, this is how things looked.

After bringing up several more boxes, this is how things look now. The new additions are the rest of the soup tureens that had been stored inside the china cabinet in my dining room, and Noritake Colburn dinnerware and coordinating glassware that had been stored in an antique china cabinet in the “formal” living room back home in Georgia.

China Storage for a Cottage Dining Room

I’m sure this dish storage project will continue to morph with time. I’ve called the same glass company twice this week and haven’t heard back, so it’s time to call a few more companies as I attempt to get estimates for having glass paned doors built for this built-in cabinetry/shelving. Again, I’m sure this arrangement will change with time, especially as I bring up more china/dinnerware. It’s so different, in a good way, being able to see everything that I had stored in two china cabinets and a sideboard, all at once!

China and Dish Storage Built-in Cabinetry

The only thing that was being stored in the dining room back home (actually in the sideboard) that isn’t being stored on the shelves here are the two sets of charger plates that I so often use in table settings.

The chargers above and these below…

…have found a home in the cabinet that’s located underneath the eat-in bar area that faces out into the dining room. So they are still within easy reach. I’ve found that charger plates are just a bit too big for storing on the dining room shelves. That cabinet is quite deep so I’m sure I’ll be storing a lot more there in the future.

Can’t wait to get pretty glass-paned doors on this shelving! I just hope the heating/AC vent doesn’t prevent that from happening. I won’t know until I can get a few companies out for estimates.

Here’s the current arrangement for the Noritake dinnerware and the soup tureens found in Williams Sonoma so many years ago.

There’s a lot of empty space left for future dish storage.

Chandelier Bulb Update: When I first moved into the dollhouse, the bulbs in this chandelier were the clear kind where the bright orange filament inside was fully visible. I realllly don’t like that style of bulb, so immediately swapped them for opaque chandelier bulbs. Those were okay, but I found I  was missing the silk-wrapped bulbs that I have on the chandelier in Georgia. So after a bit of searching, I tracked those down online. Here’s how they look on the Dollhouse chandelier. (Silk-wrapped chandelier bulbs are available here: Silk-Wrapped Bulbs.)

I still laugh at myself when I think back to when I first moved in. The chandelier would not work, except sporadically, then it just quit working altogether. So, whenever I was looking at this chandelier in the little bit of light coming in through the window, I thought the original plastic candle covers were gone and I was staring at whatever was underneath. Once I had an electrician out to repair the switch and I finally had light in this room, I realized that there were candle covers on the arms of the chandelier, they were just the brownish antique style. Ha! Funny how the mind/eye will fill in the blanks when you can’t see something clearly. The antique-looking covers suit this chandelier well—it reminds me of the style chandelier one might see in Colonial Williamsburg.

Added a few more books to the bookshelves this trip up.

More Books for Living Room Bookshelves

Can’t wait to see these shelves filled with books! Each time I start a trip up to the Dollhouse, after I load the larger boxes/pieces into my SUV, I fill in every available nook and cranny that’s left with books. Supposedly, the dining set I’ve ordered for the dining room is due to be delivered on the 10th of this month to the Georgia house. Still haven’t heard a peep though, so we’ll see if that actually comes to pass. If it does, and I rent a U-haul to bring it up (since they won’t deliver to Ohio) I’ll be able to bring up a lot more books.

Built in Bookshelves, Original to 1938 Home

My grandsons are loving this big empty room, for now. They’ve discovered that it’s a great place to play a game they’ve made up where the object is to keep the ball moving at all times.

Unfortunately, I just had to spend another $600+ on electrical work this past week when I had an outage in three areas of the house. Turned out that there was still an ancient floodlight on a side of the house where I rarely go. I didn’t even know it was there until Hurricane Helene caused it to short out, killing the power to three areas of the house this past week. I hope I am coming to the end (knock on wood) of making electrical repairs in this house. I believe almost every single light, switch, and outlet has been repaired or updated. I can only think of one or two that still need to be done, including the ceiling fan on the sun porch. It’s discouraging when I think how I could have furnished the entire house with plantation shutters with just what I’ve spent on electrical and plumbing repairs! Argggh! I want to do the pretty things, not the practical! lol We are getting there though, slowly but surely!

Looking forward to the beautiful table settings linked for this week’s Tablescape Thursday!

To get your permalink, click on your post name, then copy and paste the address showing in the address bar, into the “url” box when you link up. You’ll need to include a link in your post back to the party to link up and participate. That’s so visitors to your blog will be able to find the party and the other Tablescape Thursday participants. Requiring a link back also prevents businesses and scammers from linking up to sell their products. Please, don’t add your post name/blog name ALL IN CAPS…it tends to create big spaces between the rows of links. Please do not link up table settings that were just recently shared in the last few weeks for Tablescape Thursday.

  1. I get the need to do some decor-type things (silk-wrapped bulbs) after all that practical, boring electrical etc. At least repairing/updating all that electrical up front should bring such peace of mind now. The grandsons must have had a growth spurt lately; they’ve gotten so big!

  2. Ha – I laughed out loud at your grandkids running through the living room! We have a big room like that too, and when we moved in, the big game was sliding all the way across in your socks! Thanks for sharing the fun – your shelves are looking great too! SO appreciate the party – Happy Thursday!

I’m anxious to see how they will deal with that vent when they do the glass doors you want for the dining room shelves. I hope they are able to do it for you – it will be so much better than having to always dust the shelves!

    • I know, that would not be fun. I was wondering if the vent turns out to be a problem, if it could be moved to the floor in front of the shelves. That might be complicated to do, though. Such a weird place to have a vent.

It seems to me you might need a cabinet company rather than a glass company for your china shelves.

  5. I truly hope all your electrical wiring is just switches and plugs. Rewiring a house takes forever. Get a good insurance policy…just incase.

Hi Susan! Have you considered doing glass doors on the upper dining room shelves and closed storage on the bottom. A custom cabinet guy could probably make doors to fit around the vent. I always like to be able to”hide” some things! I am enjoying following your posts.

I think your grandsons will be excellent hand ball players! My dad loved the game. Your dining room is looking great. My sister has the very same chandler and she covered the candle part in a beautiful color that compliments her wallpaper. I believe she used scrapbook paper.

Hope you hear from the cabinet maker and glass people soon.

Every single thing you’re getting done is one more thing to getting perfection – safety, beauty, practicality – hang in there. You’ve done more in a week than I have in 10 years, truth. Your grands are cuties. I love to see kids playing physically. It’s rarer and rarer these days. Bet your family is so happy you will be close by. ♥♥

I'd love to hear from you! Please leave a comment!
