A little over a year ago, my son and daughter-in-law completed a full renovation of the kitchen in their charming, 100-year-old home. The renovation turned out beautifully! If you would like to see the 1970s version of their kitchen before its renovation, plus all the changes that were made, you’ll find that link at the end of this post. One of the updates that took place during their renovation was the removal of a wall and the addition of an eat-in bar. That area has become a favorite spot for all the family to hang out; my son often works at the bar on his laptop while my DIL is cooking and the kids are playing nearby.
I have always loved the bar stools that my daughter-in-law, Nancy, chose for the bar. They are unobtrusive and don’t block the view from the kitchen. I like how when they aren’t in use, they tuck neatly up under the bar. Plus, they are very comfortable! After I shared their kitchen renovation, I received several comments and emails asking about the bar stools and where my Nancy, found those. It’s been a year now, but she originally found those online at Overstock.
As seen in this photo when the home was listed for sale a few years back, the cottage home I just purchased has a very similar kitchen layout/design. So I decided to use the same style of barstools for my eat-in bar.
Oh my goodness, it took a good minute to find these stools! They were sold out at Overstock over a year ago, but I was hoping someone else would have them in stock. Eventually, I found some online at Walmart that I thought were the same. I ordered them, but when they arrived, it was obvious they were not the same. Instead of the seats having the look of real leather, the seats were shiny, slick, and smooth. One of the features I loved about the Overstock bar stools that Nancy chose was their pebbled, leather-like seats. I returned the ones I ordered from Walmart and continued my search.
Recently I found some online that appeared to have the right seats and ordered them, keeping my fingers crossed that I had really found them this time. They arrived while I was away in Georgia, so I couldn’t wait to get back to check them out. Here’s how they look in my kitchen—please ignore the temporary shades in the kitchen windows, those are being replaced with custom shutters on Monday. Looking forward to sharing that update soon!
I am thrilled to say, these bar stools are just like the ones that I’ve long admired in my son/DIL’s kitchen! They were very easy to put together and I love their stylish, nailhead trim! The seats are available in 5 colors. I went with their dark red colored seats since I’ve always used red accents in my kitchen back in Georgia. I thought the dark red would go well with my kitchen’s black counters, but I was super tempted by the dark green color they are available in, too.
The red can appear lighter or darker, depending on the lighting, so I took several photos from different angles in an effort to capture how it looks.
I love the color and especially love the pebbled look of the faux leather. Since the seats are not actual leather, they are easy to care for and have held up beautifully over the past year in my son’s home. They get a ton of use from two rambunctious little boys and still look brand new.
Another view in shadow…
Love the nailhead trim!
If you need bar stools for your eat-in bar, these come in three different heights and five different colors, including several neutral colors. My bar needed the “counter-height” size stools. You’ll find these available here: Bar Stools, 5 Colors and 3 Heights. If you would like to see the details of my son/DILs full, down-to-the-studs kitchen renovation, you’ll find that here: This 1970’s Kitchen Just Got a Dramatic, Beautiful Renovation.
See you tomorrow for Tablescape Thursday and a dining room update here in the Dollhouse.
I got same stools from Ballard Design years ago, but don’t see them listed anymore. The red ones look perfect in your kitchen as well as your son’s. How remarkable that your DIL made that old kitchen work for so long. It it so beautiful now and really does look twice at big at least. Just think how far your dollhouse kitchen has come already! And the GA one!
Hi Susan,
I’m loving all your updates to the Doll House. The kitchen stools are great!
Quick? What were the Light Bulbs you put into replace the overhead light in your kitchen? With the days growing shorter I want to replace the ones I have
Thanks,
SheilaC
Thanks, Sheila! These are the ones that I am using in the kitchen and in the basement: https://amzn.to/4eKttry . I’ve been really happen with them.
The stools are perfect but what really catches my eye is the cabinet in the corner of the peninsula! Yes, you have to move the stool and crouch down to get to it, but it is much more usable than a “lazy susan” (because you are anything but!) on the other side. Kudos to whoever designed that. I’ve been thoroughly enjoying your stories about the Dollhouse and am amazed at all you’ve accomplished!
Thanks so much, Barb! That cabinet is quite deep, so great for storage. Currently, I have two 12-pc sets of charger plates stored there, the ones I use so often for setting tables. Still a lot to get done but I’m gradually getting there.

I’m so happy you were able to find them! They look great.
Thanks, Pam!

Perfect!
Thanks, Toni!
Ask your son or some tech savvy person about how to use Google lens. It’s my new favorite tech thing. Or maybe you already know. You take a photo of something you like, in this case the bar stools, and save to your photos. Then you go to Google and click on the lens thing. It will search your photos, you click the image you want to search for, and Google lens will then find other matching items on the internet And voila you can see other stools just like the one you want and usually where to get them.
I have used that feature on my desktop computer by right-clicking on my mouse and selecting Google Lens, except it used to Google Reverse Search, I think. I hadn’t thought about taking a photo and using it with my phone. That’s a great idea! Thanks, Catherine!
Could it be called something else like reverse lookup? When I shopped thrift stores a lot, one woman was always taking a photo of an item and finding it online. It was a mystery to me and I could never figure it out.
Susan, I need to know too.
I think it used to be called that but now it’s called Google Lens, I guess. It’s probably an app that you add to your phone, but I’m not sure. I just did a search and it does appear to be an app that you add to your phone.
They look nice! But what really interests me is your dish rack! It’ so minimal. Care to share a closer picture and some information about where to get one?
Yolie, do you mean the black corner cabinet? If that’s what you’re referring to, that photo is from when the home was originally listed for sale a couple of years back, so it belongs to the person who owned it then. It is pretty, though!
I love the new stools and how wide they are. The cushions look thick and really comfortable. Is it open to the dining room ? That house has an amazing amount of room.
They are nice and thick. Yes, it is open to the dining room.
Thanks, Myrna!

The counter stools look great and very comfy. Just relooked at your son’s kitchen reno–what an amazing transformation! Know they’re all really enjoying their new “heart of the home” space. Hugs!
It was! They wanted to do it a lot sooner, just had to get in line for the contractor everyone likes to use here.
Thanks, Bobbi! ♥
