Welcome to the 31st Metamorphosis Monday!
My Met Monday post is a little different this week. The “After” hasn’t occurred yet, but I thought I’d share my “Before” and my “After Wish” with you, just in case it gives you some ideas for a similar area in your home.
This is the view as you enter from the hallway into my Upstairs Family Room. (To see more of this room, click here: Upstairs Family Room.) You can’t see it very well in this pic, but off to the right of the window seat is a back stairway that takes you down to the 2nd level. It a great escape route when you find yourself downstairs in the kitchen in your nightie and the front door bell rings…or when you need to make a dash down to the laundry room and don’t want to flash the neighbors who just happen to be walking by the front of your home.
Here’s a little better view…the stairway goes down to a landing, turns and then continues on down.
See that slanted section of wall there on the left side of the stairway, just beyond the plant stand?
Do you have an area like this in your home? I’ve thought of hanging some family photos or pictures there, but then I found an inspiration picture online.
Check out the small, slanted section of wall over on the other side of the room…what do you think? I’d love to remove that piece of baseboard molding that runs along the lower part of my wall and have bookshelves installed…something along the lines of what you see below. The organization freak inside of me loves the idea of creating storage, where before there was none! Is there a spot in your home where you could add some unexpected storage/bookshelves?
If I ever get the “After” done, you know I’ll post it for a Metamorphosis Monday!
Looking forward to seeing your Before and Afters! Oh, and don’t forget to leave a comment to be included in the drawing for Mr. Rooster!

Have a nice week.
Susan, Enter me in the drawing, and I'm a follower, too. Love the idea of book shelves. In my opinion, there is no such thing as too many book shelves. Love the idea of nooks and crannies! Linda
Congratulations!! That's a wonderful feat.
I love the idea of turning an unused space into a bookshelf! That is a terrific idea!
More bookshelf space sounds good – but I like it like it is also. Love that stained glass piece!
Also meant to say thanks for hosting again.
Congrats on the Blogiversary! I'm a long time follower as well.
Have a great week!
Debbie
I'm always looking for places to put books. I have tons. I love the idea of putting them there with the stairs.
By, the way, I'm a follower and big fan!
Christi
Susan,
Happy Blogoversary! The inspiration pic is just that…LOVE the bookshelves concept.
I am a SUBSCRIBER to your blog and appreciate the opportunity to view your beautiful home at the click of a button.
Congratulations on your Blogoversary! Thank you for sharing your time and talent with us.
I guess you'd call me a Follower. I don't have a blog, but I get a daily "lift" from visiting yours!
Thanks,
Maria

Hi Susan,
Your "before" looks warm, cozy, and friendly. You're fortunate to have the back staircase for additional convenience and privacy. Reminds me of TV shows and movies I watched as a kid that were set in houses with "secret passageways!" I think the idea of adding shelving for books, etc. is brilliant! Looking forward to seeing the project as it develops.
Congratulations on the wonderful things you've accomplished in one short year! You're definitely an amazing and very special lady!!!
Love your blog. Dianne
Susan, those built-in shelves shown in your inspiration room would look fabulous.
You are a darling for holding a week long giveaway! Darling tassle, goes well with my post ha! Not only am I a follower, I gave you a shout out on my PS post yesterday ha!
Thanks for hosting MM and thank you for being such an inspiration to us all.
Hugs,
Tina
I think that's grand idea about the bookshelves. But then I just LOVE bookshelves. How deep would it have to be? Thank you for entering my name for the rooster tassel. I'm a follower and also a subscriber of BNOTP. Have a great Monday Susan!!
Shirley
I'm a follower, Susan. The bookcase idea looks great and I can visualize it already! I can also visualize that tassal hanging in my kitchen! Tee hee. Good luck with your project.
Susan, love your idea! The more shelves/bookcases in a home the better. It gives you added space to display the wonderful things you find when out and about shopping. You have such great shopping sources in your area. I don't have a Met Monday to share this week. Instead I'm sharing a little Blue for Blue Monday. Not much time around here to devote to transforming things. 🙂
Your Rooster Tassel is fabulous! You can enter me as a follower and as a subscriber to your feed.
Looking forward to the celebration week. Congratulations and Happy Anniversary!
Hugs ~ hyacinthforthesoul.blogspot.com/
I certainly DO have a slanted roof area that I have no idea what to do with……this suggestion would be PERFECT!!!! Right now I store stuff there but only in boxes. I can see a lovely low book shelf there. I may stop bumping my head on that slanted roof as well if I put shelves there.
You are a genius!
Congratulations on the blogoversary. Thanks for the chance to win the tassel. It is darling. I don't know if I am a follower or a subscriber but I get all of your posts in my Google Reader. What is the difference?
Great idea! I'm always looking for a way to add more storage, too. Sally
That is a great way to use the wasted space. Looking forward to the make over.
I am a follower and really enjoy coming to visit every day.
Susan, your home is just remarkable! The decorating is stunning. And I know whatever you decide will delight us all! Thanks for hosting these wonderful events in which we all love to take part. Oh and yes, I follow your blog as well.
Brenda
YOur room is gorgeous and bookcases would be wonderful in that spot. My only question is how would you reach the ones on the down side? It's a great idea though. Yes I am a follower and have been for quite a while. Love your blog. Always full of such inspiration. The rooster tassel is just stunning. Love it. Hugs, Marty
Great post Susan,
That bedroom with the water view is an inspiration alright! I like the bookcase idea too. I am a follower and I get the feed too! Congrats again, Cindy
how about adding that picture window and the ocean in the background?? that's what i want! =) i think that's a great idea for your space! i love shelves & organization, too.
Enter me please and I faithfully follow you daily!!! You have given so much to all of us, thank you!!!
Every house needs an escape route. LOL! Congratulations on your blogiverssary (I know I butchered the spelling 😉 ). I don't have any suggestions for you. Geez I am no help. Honestly, I have been at the park all day and I am delirious from the heat! It was hot! I really just wanted to stop and say Hi!
Hugs, Sue
I love the bookshelf idea! I'm all about built in bookshelves whether for books or for decor!
I love your family room! It looks so warm and inviting! I think your bookcase idea would be great! Please enter me in the giveaway! I am a follower of your blog, too!
Happy Blogiversary!
I love your choice of inspiration room. I think you could definately accomplish the same "feel" in the space you have
Happy Blogiversary — I'm a follower and I would love for you to count me in! Love those tassels – but mostly, I love to visit your porch every week! Thanks Susan, for all your inspiration for us all.

Susan, Congrats on your blogversary. I love your blog. It is on my daily read list. i am a follower and subscriber on my AOL. I collect roosters, and would LOVE to win that tassel. Keep blogging.
Sheila
Susan…I'm always looking for places to put more books. I think the bookcase is a great idea. I am a follower and especially love the Met Mondays!
Elaine 🙂
Funny that you should mention adding bookcases. I have a spot in my back hallway where I am going to add a build in bookcase. I think it will look much nicer than the cheap bookcase I have there now.
I'll be interested in seeing if you are able to accomplish what you want. Can't tell from the picture if your space is deep enough without encroaching on the stairwell. But I'm sure you'll be able to figure it out.
If I win that rooster tassle, LBeau will just have to forget about his "no more farm animals" rule. And I've been a follower ever since I found BNOTP.
I love my back staircase too! I have been a follower for a long time and just subscribed to the feed, so please put my name in the hat!
The bookcases sound great. And what a view you have…gorgeous!
The rooster tassel is so cute.
I am already a follower.
Thanks
Congratulations on your Blogoversary! I love the photographs on your blog and yes I am a follower too. Love the rooster tassle!
Yes, I definitely think that an inbuilt bookcase would look great in that spot…, as long as it's not in the way.
Hi Susan ~ Happy Blogoversary! I am a follower of your blog already, and just as an added thing I do, I'll be putting your giveaways on the side bar of my blog. I've purchased a tassel from Angela and I love it! This one is just lovely!
I love the nooks and crannies in your inspiration picture, and if you can do that in your area, I think it would add some interest plus be a nice place to put books and add some new accessories!
Susan, I love that wall of windows and balcony off this room in the attic. I wonder of I could do that in my studio?
Happy 1 year anniversary! I am so impressed with your success in 1 year! I figured you had been blogging a long time to have so many readers.
I would be tickled to win the tassel, and I also subscribe to your RSS feed via blogger's feed proxy. (is that what it is called, lol!)
Susan, Please accept my heartfelt congratulations on your anniversary. It is because of YOU that I began blogging in January. I had been looking at RMS, and saw the photos of your fantastic screened in porch, followed you here after that, and became a faithful follower IMMEDIATELY. Hope you have a fun week, you are SO generous.

Happy Blogaversary! I am a follower as well.
This looking storage idea looks great! I have a stairway like this but my house is over 100 + years so it is too narrow to do this- I am thinking about a bunch of old frames going up the stairway- have to paint first!!
Please enter me- I am a F and S!

Hi Susan: Congratualtons on your bloggiversary!!! Very exciting. Yes, I'm a follower.
But more importantly, I love your idea for the book shelves on the back stairs. How luck you are to have back stairs. I've always loved them. You make me laugh about being caught in your nightie, but it's so true. My stairs are smack dab in the front entry and I don't have any back stairs so I'd be caught!
Again, happy bloggiversary.

I love the idea of bookshelves. Don't forget to add a plug in or two for some of those cute decorative lamps, either that or spot lighting so as to make that a truly intersting spot with some soft lighting.
I visit your blog almost weekly and always enjoy your inspirations! Maybe one day I'll try a blog. Blessings, Toni
Mr. Rooster would look wonderful at my house! I am already a Subscriber.

I like that the links on the linky list open as new windows and also that the link names change color after I've visited the site. How do you code those features?? You've been on my Favorites folder for ages but today I signed on as "F"ollower.

I would love to be gifted with that cute rooster tassel!. Your room is so comfortable and cozy. Adding bookcases like the one in your inspiration photo would make it seem even more homey. Your mind must always be thinking….
Sue
What an amazing inspiration picture! I love the bookcase/storage idea too.
What a lucky lady you have to have 2 sets of stairs. We only have one & unfortunately, I either have to run really fast – that doesn't seem to happen anymore! – or I get caught! ☺ Diane
Hello Dearheart…
Ohhh…I think that adding in those bookshelves to that sloped area in the stairwell would be fabulous! I have a spot like that as well, in fact…I have two spots just like that! What a grand idea…I'd love to do something like that!!! Thank you for sharing the great idea with us!!! I just adore your 3rd floor sitting room…it's absolutely charming and it just has the same feel as the "Secret Garden"…like your very own private room! Love it!!!

Love, love, love the bookcase down the stairs idea. I have a spot where that would work GREAT, and I'm always looking for more room for books! Definitely going in my idea file…
The tassel is gorgeous…and so is your upstair sitting room. So many cute ideas, especially love the one you posted earlier about the newspaper binders covered with glass as an end table… Clever!

I've recently heard about your Met Monday so am checkin' these blog parties out! Your bookshelf adventure will be inspirational for many to see come to fruition. I can also imagine doing the shelving on each side, fitting under the slanted roof areas, framing your beautiful window. Love the stained glass piece!
I know someone who would just love that rooster tassel 🙂
Happy Blog-Anniversary….. love reading your blog and checking out everyone elses that links too you….
Congratulations on your Blogoversary! I've only been here a few minutes, and I'm hooked. Your pictures are fantastic, and Mr. Rooster is cute as a button. -Tammy
you have made me fall in love with roosters and many things that i really had never thought about during this past year. I would have probably looked at tassels and thought not interested, until I was introduced to them on your site. You are truly the diva of decorating and blogging. Thanks for all you do and host for us. I am a follower and have become a true dishoholic this past year.
I am sure a follower but have been MIA for the summer due to redecorating projects but I am glad I stopped in to see what you were up to. I saw a view of water through your window and I don't think I caught that before so I will have to backtrack and look for your water views.

Love built in bookshelves, BUT, what is on the other side of the wall? Room enough for books, or only “stud width” for knick knacks?
Bernie, I’m not sure either…wish that part was visible in that photo. Unfortunately, I don’t remember now where I saw that photo, it was many years ago.
Oh my goodness, Susan! I’ve just seen this post for the first time. That inspiration room! My gosh, I love it! It is so cozy, and what a view. Yikes, I would even be happy if this were in a B & B I could stay in. The only thing it lacks, imo, is some colorful fabric somewhere to soften and warm it up a bit.
But wow! Can you imagine staying in a room like that? So much cozy.
