Larger Rug For The Office, Dented Refrigerators, & A Great Dish Soap Dispensing Brush

So, how’s the 9′ x 12′ rug look here in the office? It arrived yesterday, a day earlier than projected, and my oldest grandson helped me get it into the room. It arrived folded in a big, rectangular package. We were a team cartwheeling it up the 7 stairs to the office, moving it into place, and getting it up underneath the desk. In the photo below, you can see how the 8 x 10 rug looked that I shared a few days ago. I liked the way several folks described it as not being the right size since it was “floating” in the room. I totally agree, it did look like it was sorta floating there.

Updates, Sneaking a Peek into my home office

Also, the path down the left side of the room to my desk chair was half rug, half hardwood flooring—a little awkward to walk on.

One last view of how the 8 x 10 rug, that was really more like 7.6 x 10, looked in the room.

Now, let’s check out how the 9′ x 12′ fits. I measured it and its true measurements are, unfortunately, 8′ x 12′, nowhere near 9′ x 12′. I don’t know why rugs are never the width they are advertised to be—I wish they were! Update: I don’t know how I goofed, but I just remeasured the rug, and it’s closer to 8’6″ wide, so I will most likely keep it. I don’t know how I got 8 feet when I initially measured. Arggh. It’s been a long day. (See the various sizes it comes in here: Wool Rug.)

It now goes up under the desk, so no more “floating” in the room affect. It’s actually a lot further up under the desk than it may appear in this photo. It could only go  around 4 more inches up under it or it would bump into the bamboo chair mat I have for my rolling chair.

I am disappointed that it’s only 8.6 feet wide and not closer to 9 feet. Why don’t they make their rugs the size they are advertised?!

Think I should try to return it and reorder, hoping to get a wider one that’s closer to the advertised 9-foot width?

New 9 x 12 Rug for Office

The new refrigerator arrived with a big gash in the box and 2 large dents on the front. It’s having to be reordered, which will take another 2 weeks. I asked if they could leave the dented one for me to use while I waited since it would take so long to get it back in again. I really miss not having ice available for drinks. The delivery guy said they “used to do that, but don’t anymore” and he took it away. I called the local store from whence it was delivered to find out the process for getting another one. During that call, I ended up talking with a manager who said they should have left the dented refrigerator, and he wasn’t sure why the delivery guy told me that, so they are bringing the dented one back out again tomorrow. I guess this will allow me to test drive the one I’m buying for a couple of weeks before the new one arrives.

Not wanting to end this post on a negative note, I have to share this awesome dish soap/detergent dispenser brush that I recently purchased.  I have been using another scrubber wand that, also, dispenses dish detergent, but it occasionally clogs. So far, this one is working great with zero clogging. So good! I love having dish soap instantly available with just the push of a button, makes washing dishes so much easier. This dish wand/dispenser will definitely end up in my “July Favorites” post. Dish Brush is available here: Dish Detergent Dispensing Brush.

I’ll keep you posted on the rug decision. Would you return this one and try once again to get it in a size that’s closer to the 9′ x 12′ that it’s advertised to be?

  1. So you have room for the 8×10 turned the other way? That might be the solution.
the refrigerator debacle is SO DARN FRUSTRATING, but very common these days…

  2. Hi, The rug you have is very pretty. It is hard to order something online for correct size I am like you the size that they say should be the size you almost have to see it and measure it when you buy it. I carry a tape measure in my purse I never know when I may need it as far as the frig goes it is a shame to wait so long for something and it come damaged it seems there is no care in how they ship or deliver items more things come damaged than not. Like no one cares how they do their jobs anymore

  3. Mary Ellen says

The rug is beautiful, but you should have the size you need. Keep searching!

  4. Dot Van Dyke says

Susan, I so admire your tolerance for all you are going through. I know you
are excited to be near your Son and Family. I would call the vendor and ask them to review your website!! Share with them that your experiences are shared with thousands. I would ask for a deep discount or have them agree the next one they send will be as advertised! I am an Atlanta Realtor and sometimes bringing attention to my ability to share positive or negative comments goes a long way!!

  5. I think I would call about the rug measurement discrepancy.

  6. Would the 11 ft square rug fit in your room? I think it’s available in the navy color which is beautiful! I definitely wouldn’t accept a foot less than advertised!

  7. Rebecca Dexter says

I would like to see it a little more under the desk…but since the picture doesn’t show the entire room maybe I am wrong. The rug should be at least 8’6″…I would reorder and I agree with the Realtor.

  8. Hi Susan,
I don’t know. There is something that still looks off with the rug. I like the idea the other reader suggested to turn the rug 180 degrees and see if that looks better. I would try for the 10×14 or 11×15 if it doesn’t. Or maybe the 11’ square?
Maybe go buy a cheap tarp and fold it or cut it to the size you are thinking of getting to get a feel for coverage.
    Love the Dollhouse though!
    Imbi

  9. BamaCarol says

Do they have 11 by 14? That might work better and you could have the entire desk on the rug.

  10. I think you should try a large size round one. It would soften the straight edges of the desk and the ceiling in the alcove. Being round it doesn’t have to go under the desk.

    • Round would be perfect. I would notify who you purchased from and let them know the size difference from the advertised rug. Seems a discount would be in order.

  11. I love your choice of rugs, but I really think you’d be doubly disappointed reordering the 9 x 12 as I have a strong feeling it would be the same. Depending on the length of the room, I like the suggestion of possibly turning it. I can feel your angst and frustration as returning things and finding replacements is a huge time and energy drain. Since the rug is so cute and looks so well in the room, I would try flipping it around or possibly trying the next size.
Oh, and that refrigerator being dented is exasperating!

  12. Michele M. says

Oh Susan, seriously what the heck!!??? You must have the patience of a saint to deal with trouble after trouble. Hang in there. You will one day laugh about this. Till then…………….just breathe…………..

  13. Theresa Wurtz says

I would turn it or at least try it that way before returning it. I think you would like it that way.

  14. Susan Tew says

I think once you get your furnishings into the office the rug will be perfect. It looks lovely.

  15. Cynthia Cook says

Hi! I have a few of these exact Safavieh rugs, including the 9 x 12 in red. I believe they are made to metric specs & they have to estimate when they convert to standard. Obviously, they never round down when there is a discrepancy, how would that benefit them? Haha. They do shed quite a bit at first, but it slows down with regular vacuuming.

  16. Mary Lou says

Susan, I’m picturing you and your grandson maneuvering the bulky rug box up the stairs… and I’m reminded of the FRIENDS episode where they move a couch down the stairs!! The word of the day was PIVOT !!!

  17. I agree with trying it the other way. But it needs to be anchored on more than one edge. If you have something to go on the side walls, perhaps a comfortable chair with front legs on the rug, I think you’ll like it better.

  18. Franceil Parde says

YIKES!!! Your middle name must be Patience…or, it should be!! franki

  19. Susan, that rug was not inexpensive and should be the exact size. I would return both and try another company. Everytime you look at that rug, it would upset you. They are not the only company available.
Too bad the quality today doesn’t the match the price.

  20. I wouldn’t reorder the same size. Might the 10×14 work? Or turning the rug as others suggested thought I don’t think the pattern would look right running the other way. Just my thought. You are persistence, it should be your middle name! You’ll get it perfect in time!

  21. Your rug is beautiful. I’m sorry the size is not what you wanted. I’m glad you are getting a refrigerator until the new one is delivered. It reminded me of when our new refrigerator arrived. The contractor for a big box store said he couldn’t install it because of something about the water line. I told him I could turn off the water line while he installed, but he just left the refrigerator in the floor and left, uninstalled. When my husband came home, he was furious, called the store manager and told him the refrigerator would be at the curb for them to pick up. The manager and assistant manager came out and installed it quickly. Now we order everything from a locally-owned appliance store in a nearby city.

  22. Hi Susan – long time since I have commented but I am still here (and in Atlanta) enjoying all your posts! Something does seem off with the rug and I wouldn’t go larger with that busy pattern. Have you considered layering a neutral rug below your current rug? From the angle of the pics on here it does look like it needs to be turned but I bet it is the pics that are throwing me off. Either way, just like the dollhouse acquisition, persevere and make sure you love what you decide on.

Since I won’t comment again soon I want to send you lots of love and admiration for your blog and all you are doing. You are inspirational!

  23. I would turn it the other way.

  24. Do they make a 10 x 14? I Recently bought that size and it worked great but still slightly under the advertised size. The safaviah wool rug I bought is fabulous! So thick and comfortable to walk on. The wool does shed for about 6 months but that’s normal. Your vacuum will get a good workout!

  25. SharonFromMichigan says

You certainly do have patience! It seems like shrinkflation is everywhere. My husband and I were in the lumber section of a big box store recently and I was astounded that for a long time 2X4’s actually are a lot smaller than 2X4. How the heck do they get away with calling something a 2X4, 8X10, etc., and the item is no where near that size – so frustrating. I would have melted down when the refrigerator came with dents….you’re a good person 😉

  26. Roxanne Bernard says

Susan, what else is going in the room? Once it is fully furnished, it might not seem “off”. If you go up a size, it might be too large. Do you ever come up I-85N through Anderson, Sc? We have an Orion rug mill . It has an outlet store with deeply discounted prices (and they are not seconds)

  27. I agree with others to turn it. I thought that with the 8×10 as well. The only problem is the design will be going in a different direction to the one in the hall.

  28. There are so many little frustrations in life, but it will all work out & will be beautiful. (I thought these things only happened to me.) Before exchanging this rug, I think I’d call the store, share my problem about their erroneous measurement and ask that a replacement be measured before I re-ordered. It’s so much fun going on this journey with you!! P.S. I thought that I was a perfectionist.

  29. Patty Holcomb says

I love the rug. I wouldn’t send it back, unless there is a dead line on returns, until you have the room all set up. I think it will look completely different with the remaining furniture. Maybe the picture is distorted but maybe center the rug with the desk. My only suggestion.
Maybe call the company and get the return date extended until the room is completed

  30. Didn’t you say you were having file cabinets under the windows? Wouldn’t that change how the rug looks? How are you dealing with the step up and step down for that room? The colors in the rug sure do blend with the blue walls. So pretty! As for dents in the fridge, it’s too bad they are front and center. If they were low on the sides I wouldn’t care and I would ask for a deep discount. I’m sure glad you made a call and get to try out the fridge until the replacement comes. Maybe the delivery guy was being “lazy” which makes no sense because he would just trade the fridge with the replacement. Miscommunication runs rampant these days. Don’t forget to rest. Glad you had your helper with the rug!

  31. Linda Gardepe says

Susan, I think the rug might be the right size. Looking at the picture, you don’t have much space between the rug and I think may be a closet door. Like others have mentioned, try turning it around or get a large tarp and play with different sizes . what a pain about the refrigerater.
Back to the rug, Have you ever consicered going to a carpet shop and having something cut and bound to the exact size that you want. there are some fabulous carpets out there now.
    good luck,
    Linda

  32. I think I’d have to get the size rug that I really wanted/ordered. I know it would bug me forever if I “settled”

  33. Susan, When I was looking for a large area rug the carpet dealer told me that most rugs are manufactured using the metric system. Someone mentioned getting an 11×11 square. My dining room has odd dimensions and my square rug in there looks perfect. Before doing that I would check with the manufacturer and determine the actual size USCU. I would then “dummy ” up the size on the floor to see how it works. I think you run on Energizer Bunny speed and like to get things done but you also like things done right so you might not want to settle for something you don’t love. Just my two cents worth. Iris

  34. Doesn’t it seem that nothing is right now days!?
I do love the print on the rug and it looks lovely in your room.
Of course the refrigerator is just another story! Love that your delivery man made a management decision! Just keep laughing!

  35. Susan Whetstine says

Can you turn the rug the other way or would it be too short that way?

  36. I agree with what a few have already suggested to try and turn the rug and see how it looks. I think it’s a beautiful rug and works great with the blue wall paint

  37. Cat Henderson says

Wait! I want to hear about the bamboo chair mat! Or did I miss a post about it?
PS: my Amazon wish list and saved for later list are FILLED with things you’ve recommended! As I find a need for something, I “go shopping” there first because I know it will be the best.

    • Aww, thanks, Cat! I have a bamboo chair mat that I use in my office in Georgia and I really like it, so I bought one for the office in the Dollhouse, too. This is the one I purchased to use in the Dollhouse since I’m using a regular desk there with the knee hole area. It comes in various shades of brown and quite a few different sizes: https://amzn.to/3SGh3bs It has the “lip” that fits into the knee area of the desk I’m using in the Dollhouse.
This is the one I have in Georgia for my odd shaped Pottery Barn Bedrford desk: https://amzn.to/3yibJ7u

I'd love to hear from you! Please leave a comment!
